Senioritis

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Towards the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis. Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy towards school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses! For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class. This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress

that comes with waiting for your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their car, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average

drops a single letter grade, the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career. The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.

The Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that the Greater Patchogue Foundation, the Chamber’s 501c3 organization, will participate in the charitable initiative #GivingTuesday for the first time. The national day of giving will take place on Tuesday, December 3rd. #GivingTuesday was created to kick off the holiday season and promote charitable activity. The 92nd Street Y in New York City gave #GivingTuesday a home and since then, the movement has brought in more than 2,500 recognized partners,

including the Greater Patchogue Foundation, from all 50 states in the U.S. Last year, more than $10 million in donations were processed online, which was up 53% from the year before when #GivingTuesday did not exist. In order to partner with #GivingTuesday, an organization must be a recognized non-profit that promises to spearhead a charitable initiative to benefit their own services. This year’s #GivingTuesday donations to the Greater Patchogue Foundation can be earmarked to benefit local scholarship, beautification

or the Greater Patchogue Community Organization Active in Disaster (COAD). The Greater Patchogue Foundation, Inc. has been at the forefront of the revitalization of Patchogue Village and helped shape the vision for the community. The Town will also continue to issue free licenses for adopted dogs. Supervisor Romaine said, “The holidays are a wonderful time for anyone who is thinking about adopting a pet to come down to the Animal Shelter and meet our cats and dogs. These animals have so much to give and hopefully some will be adopted and brought home to a loving family.” Councilwoman Jane Bonner, who serves as the Town Council Liaison to the Animal Shelter said, “Our free adoption program has been very successful and I encourage animal lovers to visit the shelter during holidays. Now it will be even more convenient with our new Sunday hours for people to bring a furry friend home for the holidays.”

Those who are interested in adopting a pet should visit the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center located at 300 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven. The center is currently open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on Sundays. Tis’ The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments… There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Tis’ the season to be jolly, right? And why not … we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we? No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings. And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. First opportunity to decorate and put up my very own tree. First chance to perhaps host a gathering

of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!? Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious! But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones. For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year. For spending quality time with those who mean the most. It is time, time we cannot get enough of. However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner have announced that the Brookhaven Town Animal Shelter and Adoption Center will be open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting December 1st. The change was made to encourage pet adoptions during the holiday season and to make it more convenient to adopt on weekends. The shelter will be closed on Wednesdays starting December 4th. In October, Supervisor Romaine and the Town Council adopted a resolution to extend the adoption, spay, neuter and vaccination fee waiver until December 31st. Normal adoption fees range from $5 for a dog that has been neutered or spayed by the shelter; $10 for a dog that has been previously neutered or spayed; $10 for a cat that has been previously neutered or spayed and

Alcoholism. DeMarco, who accepted the award during a ceremony last week held at Adelphi University, thanked the Caron Center and Dr. Reynolds for their support, and stated “Our success is a credit to the many officers, community groups and volunteers who help us reach hundreds of young people each year with our prevention and rehabilitation initiatives.” Sheriff DeMarco has devoted significant resources to helping combat teen drug use through prevention

programs, such as “Test, Don’t Guess” and the “S.T.O.P.P.E.D. Program,” as well as by connecting criminally drug-involved youth to appropriate treatment programs during and following a period of incarceration. The Sheriff’s Office maintains a list of its specialized prevention programs on its website at www.suffolksheriff.com. Many of these programs are available to community groups, schools and for public events.

In conjunction with the ongoing observance of the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Shinnecock Hills campus, Stony Brook Southampton will host the traditional holiday lighting of the windmill and reception in Chancellors Hall on Friday, December 6th, from 5 to 7 p.m. The 301 year-old landmark underwent repairs last year following damage from Hurricane Irene in 2011. Now fully repaired, the yoke that supports its blades was cracked, and the windmill had been without its crown. This year’s Windmill Lighting program, free and open to the public, will feature tours of the new Marine Sciences Center, the Doctor of Physical Therapy Labs (DPT), and the iconic windmill, named this year a Literary Landmark. The festivities will also include music from the Stony Brook University Pep Band, an appearance by Seawolves mascot Wolfie,

seasonal refreshments, a caricaturist, balloon artist, and crafts for children. Following the Windmill Lighting and reception, the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) will present a lecture on the New York State Resiliency Institute for Storms and Emergencies (NYS RISE) in Duke Lecture Hall at 7:30 p.m. The presentation will highlight the goals,

objectives, and activities of NYS RISE and will examine the role that SoMAS will play in ensuring that NY’s coastal communities and ecosystems are strengthened to protect their health and viability in the event of future storm devastation. On Tuesday, November 19th, Legislator Sarah Anker recognized retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Bernadette Beckwell before the Suffolk County Legislature. While serving as a Lieutenant in the US Navy in 2007, Beckwell’s troop was assigned to scouting remote locations in Afghanistan. During a mission, her plane was struck by enemy fire and Beckwell’s troop was forced

to complete the mission on land via cargo truck. The overland journey was an extremely uncomfortable ride in which Beckwell was forced to sit beneath a metal bar, as the truck crossed over the rough Afghani terrain, causing her to suffer severe head injuries and spinal nerve damage. Although Lieutenant Beckwell underwent great distress, she returned home to become a

symbol of resilience. She continues to participate in the Wounded Warrior Project where she is able to share her story with other veterans. “As the daughter of a disabled Navy veteran, I am proud to recognize Lieutenant Beckwell for her courageous service to our country,” said Legislator Anker. “Her story is one of perseverance and strength, and reminds us how fortunate we are to have the brave men and women of the armed forces to protect our freedom.” Lieutenant Beckwell, formerly of Ridge, now resides in Miller Place with her service dog Tucker. She shared that golf has helped her to cope with her experiences and that she recently joined the Birchwood Spring Lake Veterans Group for its annual Golf Outing to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. about the importance of donating blood. The students also used their customer service skills learned in the Nurse Assisting Program. Nurse Assisting Teacher Jane Doherty, RN, said, “We collected 48 units of whole blood which equals 144 lives. Not bad for our first blood drive. We look forward to doing it again next year.”

There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise

while others will turn to prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. DeMarco today announced a new partnership with GetCrashReports.com to provide online access to vehicular accident reports generated by Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs. Most accident reports will now be available online within 72 hours of a crash, except for fatal crashes and accidents under investigation. A $5.00 convenience fee will be charged when obtaining crash reports online. Walk-in public records requests will still be

accepted for the general public at the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Police Records Section, located at 360 Yaphank Avenue, Yaphank NY 11980. Accident reports involving fatalities will only be available in person. “It generally takes 7-10 days to process a standard request for an accident report and many people are eager to obtain this document to assist with insurance claims. On Saturday, November 16th, the Camp-Pa-QuaTuck Patrons transformed the Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s newly renovated dining hall into a Las Vegas casino floor in an effort to raise money for the camp’s special-needs programs. The event raised $6,400. More than 100 people attended the event, which featured unlimited access to exciting games such as blackjack, craps, and slot machines, which

Art League Winners Announced

Recently, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, and Legislator Lynne Nowick honored former New York Jet Marty Lyons at a meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, on the occasion of his induction to the New Yorks Jets Ring of Honor. Mr. Lyons, one-fourth of the feared front four of the 1980’s Jet teams, known as the New York Sack Exchange was known for his hard work and ferocity on the field, but maybe is better known for his kindly and charitable ways off the

field. While with the Jets, Mr. Lyons started the Marty Lyons Foundation, helping give wishes to terminally ill children between the ages of three and 17. It was because of this work with his foundation that Mr. Lyons won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and the Heisman Humanitarian Award. This year, the Jets inducted Mr. Lyons into the New York Jets Ring of Honor at Metlife Stadium during a ceremony featuring past honorees, and former teammates of Mr. Lyons. “Besides being

a national champion at the University of Alabama, an 11-year veteran with the New York Jets, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, a successful businessman and broadcaster, it is Mr. Lyons ‘s work with the community right here in Suffolk County that is his biggest accomplishment,” said Legislator Kennedy.
