Prepared To Be Scared Approximately 10,000 visitors turned out for the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws 26th Annual Spooky Walk at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on October 18th-19th and October 24th-25th. The Spooky Walk is an annual fundraiser where children, teens, and adults are invited to explore all of the frights and thrills that the event offers.

Those who came down to be frightened experienced different exhibits such as the Zombie Asylum, The Psycho Circus, Club Boogie, The Tainted Tea Party, The Lost Pirates and much more. The walk lasted for over 45 minutes, making it one of the longest and most popular haunted walks on Long Island. At the end of the walk, visitors enjoyed

hot dogs, hamburgers, hot cocoa and cider. This year, more than $100,000 was raised for Camp Pa-QuaTuck, surpassing last year’s amount. Winners Announced On November 15th, twenty-two teams — including two pre-rookie teams — took part in the 3rd Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational at Half Hollow Hills High School West. The event was presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) and the Half Hollow Hills School District. High school students used the same robots they built for the 2014 Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition. The robots battled on a 27-by-54foot playing field with a

truss suspended just over five feet above the floor, attempting to earn points by trying to shoot as many balls as possible into goals during a two-and-a-halfminute match. The winning alliance comprised of Malverne High School FIRST Team #884 “Mechanical Mules”; Patchogue-Medford High School FIRST Team #329 “Raiders”; and Huntington High School FIRST Team #5016 “Huntington Robotics.” The finalists were Hicksville High School FIRST Team #1468 “J-Birds”; Center Moriches High School FIRST Team #4458 “Infernobotix”; and Bay Shore High

School FIRST Team #271 “Mechanical Marauders.” The purpose of this postseason event was to show visiting schools, teachers, and administrators how students are garnering an interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and why robotics programs are vital to their schools’ curriculum. Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to

TASTE OF ROCKY POINT - On November 17th, the Members Taste of Rocky Point was held during the general meeting of the North Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce at the VFW Fischer Hewins Post 6249. The event featured an array of fine foods presented by a number of Rocky Point area businesses, including McCarrick’s Dairy, Tilda’s Bakery, Rocky Point Diner, Campus Hero, Sea Basin, Carmody’s, Spiro’s and Rocky Point Edible Arrangements.

DAY AT THE OPERA - Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Elementary School’s music students recently performed an opera rendition of the story of Hansel & Gretel to an audience of classmates and faculty members. Students wore masks, and performed pantomimed movements as the music teacher, Mrs. Lauren Isleman read the story during the school’s ‘Opera’ unit. As part of a yearly program to help students develop appreciation for the arts and music, Mrs. Lauren Isleman introduced students to basic Opera and reenactment through story-telling.

PUMPKIN PICKIN - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School kindergarten students recently participated in a fun-filled morning participating in the Pumpkin Patch event. Hand-sized pumpkins and colorful balloons were placed all over the Slocum schoolyard for the students to pick, decorate, and take home. The event was part of a Halloween celebration created by faculty members and the PTA moms for the kindergarten students.

The Friends of Mercy Medical Center will hold their 78th Annual Mercy Ball on Saturday, December 6th, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. More than 300 participants are expected. This year’s event celebrates Mercy continuing to shine with more than a Century of Compassionate Care to Mercy’s surrounding communities. The proceeds from the 78th Annual Mercy Ball will support Mercy Medical Center’s new Center for Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Healing opening early 2015. The facility will offer comprehensive wound care services for the treatment of chronic, non-healing and/or poorly healing wounds. These services will be delivered by physicians and staff specializing in wound healing and hyperbaric medicine. The Center for Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Healing at Mercy will apply evidencebased clinical practices using sophisticated therapies, including the most advanced dressings and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, to help give patients back their best quality of life. “We are looking forward to a successful ball as we celebrate more than 100 years of quality health care to the community,” said Marc DiSciullo, MD, President of the Friend of Mercy. The chairpersons for this year’s event are Mayor Francis X. Murray of Rockville Centre and Mrs. Gloria DiSciullo of Muttontown. Three major awards will be presented: Physicians of Mercy Medical Center, will receive the Theodore Roosevelt Award for Outstanding Service. The award is presented by the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council to an

individual contributing to the development of Long Island’s community hospitals in the spirit of the renowned former president and Long Island resident’s lifelong devotion to public

On Monday, November 10th, Mr. James Williams, Principal of Connetquot’s Cherokee Street Elementary School, welcomed three veteran members of the U.S. Army who came to share their love of the service, and America. Invited by teachers Cathy Mongiello and Donna Barclay, these experienced soldiers spent time talking about their lives and skills, then answered questions the students had prepared. Staff Sargeant Roldan, a Brooklyn native, now living on Long Island is a 19 year veteran with a child that attends Cherokee. Joining Roldan were Sargeants First Class Leaman, from Tacoma, Washington, and Rivera who is originally from the Bronx. The three have a combined 63 years of experience in the military, and currently serve together in a transportation unit. Each of these brave veterans talked about their early lives, and what prompted them to think about military

Showing Appreciation service, the pride they share in protecting American veterans shared their experiences in Iraq, Kuwait, several citizens, and the skills they’ve developed as a result European deployments and even Cuba. At the conclusion of the program Sgt Roldan thanked the teachers and students for inviting he and his friends to Cherokee, and then presented a special gift to Mr. Williams. Sgt. Roldan presented to Mr. Williams, and the Cherokee community, with an American flag that once flew over the U.S. base in Guantanamo, Cuba. The students and teachers took the time to shake hands with the veterans, thanking them for their service, before heading back to class. Thank you Sargeants Roldan, Leaman and Rivera for visiting, and sharing your experiences with Cherokee students and staff. of their training. The middle school students learned from Mr. Failla’s real life experiences on how to avoid making destructive life decisions, while learning about conflict management, accepting personal responsibility and how to develop strong leadership skills.

Bradstock Raises Funds

On November 10th, Brendan McCurdy and Bob Draffin, Directors, Friends of Bradstock, presented a check in the amount of $12,000 to Kevin Spellman, Board President, Camp PaQua-Tuck, at the camp’s board meeting. With this check, Bradstock has raised a total of over $42,000 for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in the past four years. The money was raised for Camp Pa-QuaTuck from a portion of the ticket sales from Bradstock XXI, which took place on August 30th and August 31st. Bradstock is a two-day music festival featuring musical acts performing
