Explore Connetquot Public Library Databases As our lives continue to evolve and change, accessing information at home or on the go is paramount. In addition to academic and career resources, Connetquot Public Library has many databases available to help you grow and learn. These databases are designed to help you locate information quickly and efficiently. Your library website is a pathway to knowledge and enrichment from auto repair to home improvement and a host of consumer information. Here are just a few of the many databases available for exploration. With winter just around the corner, it is essential to keep your vehicle in good working condition. Auto Repair Source, accessible through your mobile device, offers a wealth of information on thousands of domestic and foreign vehicles. Find articles on repairs, wiring diagrams, specifications, technical service bulletins, recalls,
and more. It offers a userfriendly experience with up-to-date information and selected coverage of automobiles from 1945 and upward. During this time, our home lives have also transformed. With households serving as classrooms and offices, many have tackled those long-awaited home improvement projects. The challenges of home repair can be both daunting and rewarding. The Home Improvement and Reference Center includes articles, reference content, videos, and images designed to aid home and business owners with projects. This easy-touse database, available through EBSCO, allows you to type in a subject and instantly connect to a range of useful material. Enjoy the satisfaction of completing a project on your own and perhaps save money in the process. With the upcoming holiday season and
consumers purchasing more products online, researching merchandise can be beneficial. Consumer Reports, available through EBSCO, provides ratings and informative reviews for products and services. Explore full-text articles from the magazine with buying guides for helpful tips before you even begin to shop, including product analysis. Discover the latest product recalls and money-saving options as you comparison shop. Through the website, you can also access a series of directories under ReferenceUSA (Data Axle Reference Solutions).
Access data on small and large businesses in your community, search residential, healthcare, and job directories as well. As you make the most of your time at home, know that we are just a few keystrokes away to make this time productive and fulfilling. We invite you to explore all of our databases from your mobile device at www.connetquotlibrary. org/databases/. Note that access to some of these databases may require a library card. As always, we thank you for allowing us into your lives and your home as we share this time together.

The 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation came together in 2012 to help form a day that was focused on the generosity of giving during the holiday season. Thus, Giving Tuesday was born. Technology and social media play a large role in uniting people for Giving Tuesday. Founding partners included Mashable, a technology website, Skype and Cisco, but the success of Giving Tuesday is thanks in large part to the general public, who have both spread the word and made their own contributions to charity. In 2017, Giving
Tuesday soared to new heights when technology mogul Bill Gates and his wife, Melinda, announced their foundation would match up to $2 million in donations to Giving Tuesday fundraisers started on Facebook. Facebook similarly waived its 5 percent fee for U.S.-based nonprofits all day long. The global Giving Tuesday movement helped raise more than $300 million online across more than 150 countries in 2017 alone. This year, the Giving Tuesday organization is poised to top their numbers and continue to improve upon the more than 46,000 participating organizations involved in their charitable efforts. While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are some of the more widely known retail holidays, Giving Tuesday is becoming pretty popular in its own right. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday helps raise awareness that charity is an important component of the holiday season. The nonprofit services company Neon says nearly one-third of all annual giving occurs in December, with 12 percent happening over the final three days of the year. Giving Tuesday is positioned right in the midst of the most popular time for charitable giving. What makes Giving Tuesday unique is that it is largely fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. The day was actually created

Army Soldier Desperate For Help To Rescue Cat From The Middle East Being deployed to the Middle East can be challenging for any U.S. soldier. But when you get difficult family news from back home, it can make getting through that period even more difficult. When Army Sergeant Ash received difficult family news, she took comfort in a rescued kitten that was near death. Now people wonder if she saved the kitten, or if the kitten actually saved her. Coming back home to the States, she is desperate to bring the cat, Rona, along with her. To help make it happen, she has turned to Guardians of Rescue, which has a reputation of helping soldiers. “We know all too well how important and lifesaving these pets are to our soldiers stationed in the Middle East,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “When they come back home, they can’t bear to leave them there, and we agree that it’s not safe. Leaving the cat in the Middle East will end up being a death sentence for it. We will make every effort to bring Rona home to her, but we need the public’s support to help make it happen.” Sgt. Ash’s roommate worked for a veterinarian on base, where they had been given a rescued kitten that was only a week old. They didn’t know if it would make it, as it was near death, and they knew she needed around-the-clock care. That’s when she decided to hook up Sgt. Ash with the kitten, thinking that taking care of her would help distract her thoughts from all the family issues that were weighing on her. Sgt. Ash took the kitten and gave it all the care that it needed. Twice she thought she almost lost her, but the kitten held on and pushed through. Once she overcame being sick, she decided to name her Rona, which was after the coronavirus, because she felt that the virus is tough
to fight, and Rona had put up a great fight. She went on to spend all of her time with Rona, creating a loving bond and seeing her as a sign of hope and strength. “We saved each other and we belong together,” shares Sgt. Ash. “I pray that Guardians of Rescue will be able to bring Rona home to the States, where we can live out our lives together. I’m grateful for their help, as well as to everyone who donates to help make it possible.” Guardians of Rescue is no stranger to helping soldiers bring their pets back from deployment. They have helped many people bring back their dogs and cats, all through the help of the public. Bringing pets back is not an easy task, and it’s one that is also costly. Not only will Rona have to go through a medical check, but the organization will need to work with other organizations in the Middle East to help make it happen, and it will need to pay for the travel expenses. Guardians of Rescue is asking the public to make a donation of any amount possible to help bring Rona back to live with Sgt. Ash. To make a donation, visit the site here:
https://guardiansofrescue. networkforgood.com/ projects/113592-get-ronathe-cat-out-of-the-middleeast-with-sgt-ash. Guardians of Rescue provides assistance to animals out on the streets and investigates animal cruelty cases. It is located in New York, but it helps animals in many places around the country. It is also instrumental in helping military members with their pets. To learn more, get involved, or to make a donation to support the Guardians of Rescue, log onto www. guardiansofrescue.org. Law Enforcement Students Participate in Mock Interviews
SUFFOLK ZONE 5 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 25, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
To prepare his students for possible interviews with a police department or government agency, Bixhorn Tech Law Enforcement Teacher Gary Travers collaborated with the school’s TV, Video, and Digital Film Production class. Each of Travers’ students took part in a mock interview, while the TV students recorded and edited them so their classmates could view the interviews at a later date to learn and improve. Every student came
prepared by dressing appropriately and carrying a resume. They took turns sitting at the front of the class to answer questions, which were asked by classmates and their teacher. Fellow students also provided valuable written feedback for each interviewee. Said Travers, “Going through this exercise allowed my students to better prepare for interviews for entry-level positions in law enforcement, and the video and written feedback gives everyone
the opportunity to better themselves. Additionally, our TV Production students received real-world practice by recording these live events.” The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, referred to as the Academy, is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has locations in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead. Bixhorn Tech is located on the Bellport campus.

Preservation Long Island Announces Call for 2021 Endangered Historic Places Nominations
Preservation Long Island, a regional preservation advocacy nonprofit, is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2021 Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP). Nominations are open to the public and can be submitted digitally through the EHPP 2021 portal on Preservation Long Island’s website. All nominations must be received by Friday, December 18, 2020. Do you know of an endangered historic place in your Long Island community? Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP) offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation priorities in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach. Our EHPP listing partners receive technical assistance and advocacy support as they work to preserve at-risk historic places threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to the lack of sustainable long-term stewardship plans. EHPP listings are featured on Preservation Long Island’s website and social media. Listed sites may serve as locations for our Preservation in Progress Tour series, which highlights ongoing preservation projects at historic places throughout the region. We also support our listing partners in developing informational materials such as leaflets or brochures outlining the history of a site and its preservation needs. Listings are selected by a panel of Preservation Long Island staff, experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields, as well as members of Preservation Long Island’s Board of Trustees.
ENDANGERED HISTORIC PLACES - Summer Club Clubhouse, Town of Islip in 2018. This site is one of Preservation Long Island’s 2019 Endangered Historic Places. Photo by Dylan Wallace ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Significance: A nominated site must be historically, culturally, or architecturally significant and may encompass individual buildings, landscapes, structures, or any grouping thereof. However, the nominated site need not be listed on the National/State Registers of Historic Places or designated as a local landmark. Threat: The existence and/ or integrity of the nominated site must be seriously threatened. In addition to planned demolition, threats can include a pattern of neglect or exposure that will inevitably lead to loss; the planned introduction of harmful factors or insensitive redevelopment that will substantially diminish the context or setting; or inappropriate maintenance/alterations resulting in the loss of material integrity. Impact: EHPP listing will have a positive impact on efforts to protect the nominated site. The nomination demonstrates substantive community interest in preservation of the site. Local listing partners are sufficiently organized and prepared to advocate for preservation goals.
Nomination materials should be submitted online via our website at preservationlongisland.org. Nominations submitted after Friday, December 18, 2020, will not be accepted. Please carefully review the eligibility criteria, submission instructions, and nomination checklist. To inquire about the program or nomination process, contact our Preservation Director, Sarah Kautz, at 631-4924664 x105 or skautz@ preservationlongisland.org Preservation Long Island’s Advocacy Programs are made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. arts. ny.gov About Preservation Long Island Preservation Long Island is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to celebrating and preserving Long Island’s diverse cultural and architectural heritage through advocacy, education, and the stewardship of historic sites and collections. h t t p : / / preservationlongisland.org

Osteoarthritis Explained…
Our Treatment is Non-Surgical!
About Arthritis Knee Pain Centers
Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease and is the most common type of arthritis. When osteoarthritis occurs, the surface layer of cartilage around the knee breaks down and wears away. The bones that connect at the knee joint then rub together with no cushion resulting in pain, swelling, and loss of motion in the joint. While the disease can progress quickly, in most people it develops gradually over a period of years.
Our treatment has been thoroughly tested by the FDA over many clinical trials and is designed specifically for those with knee pain. Its effectiveness is proven and is improved through the use of state-of-the-art live motion fluoroscopy which allows doctors to see exactly where the problem is occurring.
Our doctors at Arthritis Knee Pain Centers have decades of experience and are invested in utilizing the most cutting-edge technologies and methodologies to serve their patients. Through their experience they can customize a treatment plan that’s right for you. The Arthritis Knee Pain Centers offers hope and healing for your knee pain.
Osteoarthritis is Not Your Fault… It’s not your fault that you have osteoarthritis. There are many reasons why this disease afflicts people. Heredity can be a major cause of osteoarthritis. If a parent or grandparent had it, it may be passed down to you. Other reasons for developing osteoarthritis include: • Being overweight (medical factors can impact this, not just over-eating) • Aging (wear and tear) • Joint injury (falls, sport injuries) • Joints aren’t properly aligned or are imbalanced • Genetic defects in the joint cartilage • Undue stress on joints from work, sports, etc.

Here’s How Our Treatment Works… Our advanced technology allows our doctors to see the exact location in the knee where the greatest damage is. This is done through special imaging called flouroscopy. Once the affected area is located, an FDA-approved viscosupplementation gel is injected at the exact point where it will do the most good. From there, the healing process begins. The gel bonds with the existing natural fluid in the knee to create a lubricating and cushioning layer in the knee between the bones. This reduces pain, swelling and inflammation in the joint. Most patients feel improvement quickly and can resume activities they hadn’t previously been able to do because of the pain.

Exhibiting artists represent 34 Long Island communities from New Hyde Park to Montauk as well as New Jersey and New York City. Artists’ creative response to the coronavirus crisis brings us works that represent the experience of artists during the pandemic. We asked artists to show us what they have been creating during the pandemic and to share with us their thoughts and feelings about creating during these challenging times. Some works in the exhibit express the fear and anxiety while others find beauty in nature, or celebrate simple pleasures of everyday life. Some artists created to share memories of past joyful times… some created work specifically about the pandemic. Many shared that the creation of their art helped process their feelings. The common thread…joy in the simple act of creating. Exhibiting Artists: Marsha Abrams (Stony Brook), Lucia Alberti (Smithtown), Tina Anthony (Northport), Ryanne Barber (West Babylon), Bonnie Bennett Barbera (Ronkonkoma), Shain Bard (Huntington Station), Ron Becker (Deer Park), Victoria Beckert (Holbrook), Sheri Berman (Dix Hills), Joyce Bressler (Commack), Nan Cao
