Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., was recently notified by the district Board of Education (BOE) that the teachers of the district were to be commended at the November 10th meeting. In front of a meeting room packed with residents and teachers, BOE President Milynn Argulis recognized the Connetquot teachers
for their service to the community: “The Board of Education would like to recognize the Teachers of the Connetquot School District for their contributions to the Connetquot community. For three consecutive years the Connetquot Teachers have won the NYSUT award for outstanding service to not only the Connetquot Community, but to
organizations within New York State. Mighty Maya’s Story
Dear Community, I am writing this letter to ask for your prayers and any help you can give to beautiful “Mighty” Maya, who was born June 17th, 2015 with a rare neurological disorder called Hemimegalence phaly. This disorder causes catastrophic epileptic seizures that, in time, could severely debilitate Maya’s cognition and even kill her. Anti-seizure medi cation will not work to control her seizures. The only way to help Maya live a productive and fulfilling life is to have her undergo radical surgery, a hemisphe rectomy, that disconnects the “bad” half of her brain. Maya’s parents are asking for donations to be used toward the cost of everything associated with Maya’s journey, from travel, to medical needs, to physical and occup ational therapy, among other expenses. We know that Mighty Maya is stron g enough for the challenges ahead and we thank you for helping her get there by either spreading the word and donating to her cause. At the age of only four months, Maya had her brain surgery on October 28th, to disconnect the “bad” half of her brain , at Boston Children’s Hospital. After being in ICU for a number of days, Maya is now recovering in inpatient care, where she started receiving physi cal therapy soon after her brain surgery. I am writing this letter to ask you for your help for Mighty Maya and her parents. “Tis the time of year to be thankful, and I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Human, as I’ve been told by many fans that I am far too tough on her, what with my lack of fancy accommodations and inconsistent feeding schedule. I suppose I have been a bit harsh in my criticisms. Us bettas tend to have one-track minds, you know. In truth, I do appreciate the love and attention she shows me – and she has been better of late with notifying me when dinner is going to be delayed. Speaking of, I hear there’s a large meal coming up – a Thanksgiving, I believe it’s called – where humans
gather ‘round to eat a large stuffed bird. What a disturbing concept. I sure hope there’s no fish on the menu! I do hope I get an invite and my very own place setting though. Day after day, I watch my human unload groceries, chop vegetables, prepare dinner… and then it disappears into the dining room, never to be seen again. All that food, and no leftovers for Buddy? Maybe if I sit at the table and stare at their plates, someone will drop a morsel into my bowl. One can only hope. There I go again, with my culinary obsession. Tiny brain, eyes-bigger-thanstomach. Typical fish. But seriously, a sincere thanks to all my loyal followers who constantly write in to my

human with fan mail, asking about my status and wishing me well. Your interest in the musings of a tiny finned creature are appreciated. Nine months and still going strong! On Friday, December 11th, all four JVC Broadcasting radio stations will broadcast live from Brookhaven Town Hall to promote the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. All the popular on-air personalities from My Country 96.1, LI News Radio, Party 105 and LaFiesta will be broadcasting from the lobby of Town Hall. Last year, residents donated thousands of toys ranging from stuffed animals, board games, dolls, toy trucks and bicycles. TRAVELING BACK IN TIME TO THE 1920’S SUBMITTED BY: KRISTIN DITRANO, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
On October 27th, Fairfield School, also known as Massapequa Avenue School, turned ninety. The fifth and sixth grade gathered together and learned about our school and how special it truly is. At the end of the ceremony, the historical society unveiled an historical marker. Some things I learned about the early days of our school are: there weren’t houses surrounding our school like today; there were open fields with cows. I also learned the kids didn’t ride on the bus to school; they walked, rode a bike or road in a carriage pulled by a horse, if they were lucky. Fairfield School only had one room that held multiple grades. The last thing I learned was a classroom could have up to 30 children but only have one teacher.
In the 1920’s, Sebastian Hilton invented a contraption that changed the life of many children. This contraption was invented in Chicago, where Sebastian and his mathematical father lived. Mr. Hilton invented the jungle gym! Sebastian’s father wanted to build a play structure that kids could play on and learn about x, y and z coordinates at the same time. This invention is important because the jungle gym is an object enjoyed by many children. I can connect to the invention of the jungle gym because every time I go to the park, I play on the three dimensional figure and it entertains many kids. In the 1920’s, the stock market crashed and many people lost all their life savings. As a result of this, people
started to live in Hoovervilles. People made houses out of boxes and other scrap material they found. Hoovervilles were found all over the country, but some major Hoovervilles were found in St.Louis, Missouri, Seattle and Washington. This event took place in the 1920’s and ended in 1929. This event is important because many people were homeless for many years because of the stock market. I can connect to this because whenever I go to the city, I see homeless people living in cardboard boxes and this reminds me of Hoovervilles. As you can see, the 1920’s was a challenging time because of the crash in the stock market. This major event will be put down in history just like our school was on October 27th.

across the country to compete for the national award. A crew from ESPN will tape Sean’s activities early next week for a Wendy’s Heisman special that will air across the country. Sean will be travelling to New York City on December 11 to participate in numerous activities, including the National Awards Banquet where the male and female winners will be announced. Sean is an AP Scholar and has achieved High Honor Roll throughout high school. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Foreign Language Honor Society and the Business Honor Society. He has received Scholar-Athlete awards for the past three years and was named the Suffolk Zone Award winner for 2015. Sean is also a dedicated volunteer for the Longwood Youth Sports Association.
As senior captain for the Longwood Varsity Football team, he has exceptional speed and strength which allows him to play multiple positions offensively and defensively. In addition to being a talented football player, Sean is the Varsity Baseball starting catcher and left-handed leadoff hitter. “Sean exhibits the same qualities on the field as he does in the classroom which earns him respect by his classmates and teammates,” said Football Coach Jefferson Cipp. “Sean takes his athletic commitments as seriously as he does his academic responsibilities. He continues to receive accolades in both areas of his life.” Sean has verbally committed to playing on the baseball team at Hofstra University where he plan to pursue a degree in Finance.
Nicks on the Wall Remember when you were a kid and family members would measure your height against the wall, marked it with a pencil and over the years you grew along with these marks, higher and higher up the wall. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s mission is to offer affordable home ownership programs to hardworking families who are looking for a place to call home – a place where they can put their own nicks on the wall. This holiday season, Habitat has designed a holiday shopping guide that
gives back to the deserving families of Suffolk County. Habitat Suffolk’s Nicks on the Wall program allows givers to gift a variety of home essentials to future homeowners including a box of nails, windows, cabinets or a front door to their new home. The national campaign Giving Tuesday is taking place on December 1st and all donations made on this day will go directly towards funding Habitat’s homeownership program in the New Year. At the November 17th General Meeting of the Legislature, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore honored Suffolk County Police Officer Steve Turner of the Highway Patrol SAFE-T team for saving the life of a man who collapsed. Officer Turner received a standing ovation as Legislator Muratore presented a proclamation to commemorate the following events, which occurred on October 5th: Officer Steve Turner was-off duty and had just finished playing deck hockey at a local Sports Arena. Upon exiting the arena, he heard people
yelling in distress, and found a man lying motionless on the ground. Officer Turner immediately used his training to provide emergency medical care. He began CPR and applied an AED. The patient, Ray Hawkins of Smithtown, an NYPD Sergeant, was without a pulse after several attempts. Officer Turner persisted, and Sgt. Hawkins finally resumed breathing, although still unconscious. When help arrived, he was transported to University Hospital at Stony Brook and had emergency surgery to repair blockages to his heart. Sgt.
Hawkins was unconscious for five days, but upon gaining consciousness, was deemed to have 100% brain functions. His recovery is a direct result of Officer Turner’s quick and heroic action. “Officer Steve Turner is a true hero. It is my extreme pleasure to recognize him for his quick thinking and act of bravery, performed while off-duty,” stated Legislator Tom Muratore. “This honor is well deserved, and I congratulate him on a job well done. I was also happy to learn that Sgt. Hawkins resumed all brain function, and wish him all the best.”
Animal Science Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) provided a dog training demonstration to the students enrolled in the Animal Science Program at the Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center. Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Students worked
alongside CCI staff during the demonstration. They learned how the dogs are trained to do things like turn light switches on and off and pull wheel chairs. The field trip to CCI is one of many the students will go on through-out the school year. They will engage in hands-on experiences with farm animals when they visit Cornell Cooperative Extension and local horse farms later in the school year. Animal Science Teacher
Lisa Mongiello said, “The Animal Science program provides handson experiences in a classroom environment that simulates a veterinary hospital, grooming shop, and kennel. Field trips to retail stores, bio-medical labs, and marine, wildlife refuges and zoos provide the students with diverse opportunities.” The two-year program prepares students who are pursuing animal related careers.

Sean Rausch, a senior at Longwood High School, learned in a surprise announcement on Tuesday, November 10th, that he is a national finalist for the 2015 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. Much like the collegiate Heisman Memorial Trophy®, the program recognizes exceptional students that excel in the classroom, on the field and in the community. This partnership aims to inspire high school senior students to pursue their higher education goals. Winter Conference Set The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA), is proud to announce that Three Hundred Twenty-Nine (329) students from school music programs across Long Island have been selected to perform among the more than nine hundred (900) students in eight (8) NYSSMA All State Ensembles. This constitutes more than onethird of the total number of students selected for All State. Approximately nine hundred (900) students from high schools across New York State will perform in eight ensembles, and professional development related to music education will be offered to approximately 1,200 attendees. Several school ensembles will be featured, and Glenn Nierman, President of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) will deliver the keynote address. NYSSMA’s featured
artist will be Triton Brass. Members of this exciting Internationally-renown musical quintet has been artists-in-residence at both the Tanglewood Institute and The Boston Conservatory, where each has served as on the faculty. “As NYSSMA celebrates its eightieth All State Conference, we are proud to partner with the city of Rochester for the eighteenth year in a row,” said Dr. David Gaines, NYSSMA President. “Music educators from all over the State will attend for professional development opportunities, seminars, performances, and valuable lesson materials for use in their classes and rehearsals. Remembering Those Who Served On November 7th, the Village of Islandia held its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Triangle. Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a Vietnam veteran, was joined by local elected officials, war veterans and representatives from the Central Islip Fire Department to honor those who served and continue to serve in the armed forces. There was a musical performance by the Central Islip High School marching band before the ceremony. Tom Brauner, Chaplain, Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post #12144, delivered the invocation. During the ceremony, Mayor Dorman asked those in attendance to remember local residents who served in the military and have since passed on. He also recognized all the local veterans’ groups that were in attendance and announced that the village has established the Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144, located at Islandia Village Commons, and the designation of veteransonly parking spots in the Village Hall’s parking lot. The ceremony ended with

village officials joining war veterans in placing a wreath and bouquets of roses in front of the memorial. After the ceremony, members of Col. Francis S. Dig Pink Challenge Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) Girls Varsity Volleyball team recently hosted its annual Dig Pink Challenge, in which the team rallies to raise funds to fight breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness month. The team raised more than $3,450 dollars with help from varsity and junior varsity athletic teams, parents, friends, teachers and local businesses. In the past five years,
the CHS Girls Volleyball Dig Pink program has both raised awareness about the realities of breast cancer and donated more than $18,000 to breast cancer research. The Girls Varsity Volleyball team raises money by selling baked goods, bracelets and t-shirts, conducting raffles and receiving donations. Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School teacher Mrs. Flynn donated an autographed
Yankees catcher Jorge Posada baseball to help with fundraising. The Dig Pink program is part of a nationwide initiative to enable women and men affected by this disease to regain control of their lives. The program has inspired thousands of high school and college teams across the United States to bring communities together to support those fighting cancer and survivors.

Raising Awareness Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) Ladies’ Field Hockey Coach Jenn Piscitelli and her team recently played league rival William Floyd High School in a special home game to raise awareness for breast cancer.
The CHS Ladies’ Field Hockey team beat the William Floyd High School team by a score of 6-1, improving their record to 7-6 with a shot at making this year’s playoff tournament at the end of the season. To raise awareness for breast cancer the CHS
Ladies’ Field Hockey team wore special pink shirts during the game and played with a pink ball. The team raised nearly $500 for breast cancer research selling baked goods, raffle tickets and pink merchandise before and during the game.
