The holiday season sometimes arrives with a frenetic pace. At the dawn of the holiday season, there seems to be so much to fit into a relatively short period of time, including planning celebrations and shopping. The rush often begins the Friday after Thanksgiving on a day called Black Friday. Plaid Friday was born out of a recognition that the frenzied nature of Black Friday may not be for everyone. The event was created in Oakland, Calif., to transform holiday shopping for family and friends into a more connected, pleasurable activity than Black Friday. Plaid Friday promotes the diversity and creativity of local and independent businesses. On Plaid Friday, customers are urged to shop locally and enjoy choosing gifts in a more leisurely fashion. According to event organizers, the name “Plaid Friday” was chosen from the idea of weaving individual threads of small
businesses together to create a strong fabric that celebrates independent businesses. While Plaid Friday may have originated in California, it has now spread to local towns across the country. Plaid Friday precedes Small Business Saturday, meaning holiday shoppers can turn their two-day, postThanksgiving shopping excursions into 48 hours of opportunities to support small businesses. Shoppers have many different ways to support the Plaid Friday movement. • Look for signage or advertising regarding Plaid Friday. Many establishments may advertise Plaid Friday sales. Keep an eye out for signs or hashtags on social media, such as #plaidfriday, #shoplocal and #dinelocal. • Let others know you’re supporting local businesses. Spread the word about Plaid Friday to others who may not be aware of the movement.
• Wear plaid clothing on Plaid Friday to show local business solidarity. • Search community blotters and other local websites to find out more about Plaid Friday efforts in your community. • Certain shops may have scaled-back sales due to COVID-19 restrictions. Continue to support these businesses as much as possible, taking advantage of curbside pickup or delivery options that can further streamline holiday shopping. • Explore new offerings. Some businesses you frequently shop with may have altered their services and products to fit the changing times. As a result, you may be able to purchase a greater variety of items all in one store. Local shopping is at the heart of Plaid Friday. Shoppers who want to avoid the typical rush of Black Friday shopping can visit small local businesses.
PSEG Long Island Supports Local Veterans
PSEG Long Island and its employees are committed to supporting the veteran community. Each year the company provides opportunities for its employees to help individual veterans and organizations through hands-on community service. Recently, a group of PSEG Long Island employees who are military veterans paddled in the “22 PTSD Awareness Challenge” (22PAC). The event is held annually around Labor Day to shine a light on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the military community and the alarming average number of 22 veterans who commit suicide every day. This issue is particularly noteworthy this time of year with the commemoration of Veterans Day on Nov. 11. The seven paddlers in the PSEG Long Island contingent were part of a larger group of military veterans making the cross-Long Island Sound journey from Bridgeport, CT to Port Jefferson – 22 veterans in all in tandem kayaks. Team PSEG Long Island included three
newer employees. One of them, U.S. Army veteran and Meter Services team member from Patchogue Jacob Raggett, said he was honored to participate, though he was unable to paddle this year. “It’s important that we raise awareness about this serious issue that affects so many veterans, and I’m happy to do my part,” said Raggett. “We need to let our fellow servicemen and servicewomen know that we are all here for each other, and always will be, to help them through difficult times.” Further demonstrating PSEG Long Island’s commitment to our local heroes, several dozen employees will be participating in two community service projects to spruce up and beautify outdoor spaces during the week of Veterans Day. The projects include enhancing the Veterans Memorial Pool & Park in East Meadow by planting shrubs and trees and grooming the grounds, and raking, weeding and clearing the grounds of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Garden and courtyard at the Northport Veterans Affairs
(VA) Medical Center. Also throughout the month of November, PSEG Long Island employees are supporting veterans by participating in two collection drives for local, grassroots veterans’ organizations – General Needs, Ltd. and 9-1-1 Veterans. The groups offer food and meals, clothing and other necessities to local veterans in need, provide household supplies and furnishings for formerly homeless veterans, and support awareness about PTSD and the high rate of suicide among the veteran population. PSEG Long Island is fortunate to count military veterans among its employees – men and women who served and continue to serve our country proudly, and are dedicated to serving our customers by committing to provide them with safe, reliable power. Supporting Small Businesses Supporting small businesses ensures more money stays in the communities those businesses serve. The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at
a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local
businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees, many of whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities.

North Science Students Lend Their Skills To Environmental Research The Sachem High School North Science National Honor Society recently went on a field trip to Sunken Meadow State Park to participate in “A Day in the Life of the Nissequogue River” as part of the “Day in the Life” program sponsored by Brookhaven National
Laboratory, the Long Island Pine Barrens Commission and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The collaborative effort partners school groups with environmental science professionals to collect data at multiple
locations throughout an aquatic ecosystem to get an overview of the health of that watershed. As part of the trip, students from 10 different schools sampled various locations along the Nissequogue River. They collected water chemistry data, seined for fish, conducted
a terrestrial wildlife survey, took soil samples and analyzed surrounding land use. In the coming weeks, students will collaborate with these other groups and agency professionals to upload, share and analyze data for the entire Nissequogue River system.
The specific site the students visited, Sunken Meadow Creek, a tributary of the Nissequogue, is the product of a long-term estuary restoration project. In the past, Sachem North students have aided in the restoration project by helping plant salt
marsh plants and participating in longterm habitat monitoring and data collection with environmental science nonprofit and government professionals to document positive changes there for over 10 years.
