On Friday, November 4th, teens from the Connetquot Public Library participated in a Soldier Support program for service members stationed overseas and for those in hospitals. This program allowed teens to design notebooks, write letters for Operation Gratitude to a newly enlisted soldier or to thank a veteran for their service. Frank Bania, of Boots on

the Ground NY, a volunteer organization of veterans helping veterans, visited the library for this special program. In addition to preparing notebooks and letters, teens filled care packages with a host of items, including snacks, toiletries, socks and DVDs. The program, initiated by teen Librarian, Angela Breslin in 2012, gives teens the opportunity to earn community service,

but more importantly it enables them to understand and appreciate the sacrifices of those who serve. As a teen librarian, Angela focuses on crafting programs to create a sense of purpose, a sense of inclusion and to broaden the scope of our teens on every level. With over 20 care packages labeled and sealed, we simply say, thank you.

FIRE DEPT VETS HONORED - On Monday, November 7th, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore attended Farmingville Fire Department’s monthly board meeting to recognize members of the department who have served in the military. Through Suffolk County’s Veteran Recognition Program, Legislator Muratore awarded pins and certificates as a special thank you for their dedication and service to our country.

Exploratory Enrichment

Eastern Suffolk BOCES is pleased to announce that Loretta Corbisiero is the new administrative coordinator for the Arts-in-Education (AIE) and Exploratory Enrichment Program. Ms. Corbisiero has an extensive background and involvement in arts enrichment, art education, and is the State Board Trustee for the New York State Art Teachers Association. At a recent AIE presentation, Corbisiero introduced school district personnel to a variety of services and explained the important role that the arts play in education.

“Arts experiences, such as those offered through the Arts –in-Ed and Exploratory Programs engage and inspire students by educating the whole child and supporting innovation, imagination, and creativity,” she said. Dancer/choreographer Kendra Leigh Mace presented a dance routine from Singing in the Rain to show how she teaches students to embrace who they are and how to highlight those characteristics through movement and dance. The plot of Singing in the Rain allows for tie-ins to building

self-esteem, respect, honesty, language, and communication. Kendra can work with students on themes that are a bit meatier like body identification, dignified and undignified behavior, and can make functional connections to math, and historical connections to social studies. Several attendees embraced their vulnerability and participated in a movement exercise with Kendra. Everyone in the room was supportive and applauded their colleagues’ willingness to learn about themselves through dance.

Recognizing Vets Schools throughout the Connetquot Central School District recently showcased their love and respect toward the nation’s veterans through various means of appreciation. Close to 50 military veterans, along with their proud families, recently attended the annual breakfast celebration held at Ronkonkoma Middle School. Members of the American Legion Post 155 (Ronkonkoma), led by former Commander Paul Attard, were among those in attendance. During the event, the students proudly honored veterans and enjoyed speaking with

them about their service. At Idle Hour Elementary School, a schoolwide assembly honoring veterans was held. Organized by Idle Hour Youth and Family Services Coordinator Lara McNally, the event featured dozens of relatives from both students and faculty members who have served in the U.S. military forces. After each veteran was individually introduced, students joined together by grade level to sing patriotic songs and a select number of students read essays, expressing words of respect and gratitude toward the veterans for all

they have done to protect the country. A slideshow presentation displaying the veterans in their military years left many in the audience teary eyed. Fifth-grade students at John Pearl Elementary school visited the Bohemia location of The Arbors Assisted Living Community to honor American military veterans. Donna Leopardi, John Pearl Elementary School Youth and Family Services coordinator, arranged the visit which had students singing patriotic songs and distributing gifts created within their art classes.

Outdoor Research Connetquot High School students in John Halloran’s Science Research class and Jessica Conrad’s Environmental Science class recently engaged in a hands-on science exploration at sites along the Connetquot River to celebrate this fall’s “A Day

in the Life” initiative. The program offers high school students the opportunity to collect firsthand information that will yield results as to how the Connetquot River fits into the larger ecosystem. CHS students examined the physical and chemical

aspects of each aquatic ecosystem, measuring such factors as salinity content and the oxygen levels in the water. Their work assisted in further determining the health of the aquatic ecosystem and biodiversity of the Connetquot River.

ORANGE & BLACK - Middle Country Central School District’s Oxhead Road Elementary School recently turned orange and black in celebration of Halloween. Students and teachers dressed up for a day of festivities that included reading Halloween stories in class, writing stories and crafting spooky Halloween art projects.

The classrooms had been decorated by Centereach High School students and teachers according to a range of Halloween themes to entertain the younger students and demonstrate school pride. Some of the decoration themes include Carnival/ Mardi Gras, Disney, Zombies and Pirates. The event provided a safe environment in which students can partake in Halloween traditions

that eliminates the risk of students going up to unknown residences. Students representing all four classes, the Art Club, the Best Buddies club, DECA club, Math, Music, Theater Arts, Varsity sports and National Honor Society also collected non-perishable food items from attendees to support the school’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.

As an extension of their class curriculum, Connetquot High School students in William Bedell’s Level III Spanish classes recently celebrated “Dia de Los Muertos,” the Latin American holiday meaning Day of the Dead, in a very creative way. While keeping in mind the meaning behind the

holiday – one meant to be a joyous occasion where the memories of the deceased are remembered and cherished – the students fashioned several customary holiday items. They worked collaboratively to create an altar where items are offered in the memory of a deceased loved one,

while Mr. Bedell created the copal (incense) that fills the air during the ceremonies. Additionally, the students had a calavera (skull) cake decorating contest based on the colorful skull symbols that play a large role within this custom.

Of Fuzz & Refurbishing Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

inferior. Too straight, too shiny and slippery…but the suction cup, that’s the greatest. How I do love to sit perched atop it, resting my weary fins after a long day of swimming laps. After a few days of fishy antibiotics, my little fuzz problem seems to have gone away. Now, I patiently wait for my beautiful blue fins to regenerate so I can be back to my old spectacular self. ‘Til then, enjoy your turkey and your football, your shopping and your decorating, and stay tuned for my next words of wisdom.

issued in August 2016 for drones, DeBlanco and his Teaching Assistant Evan Damadeo, a FAA licensed Certified Flight Instructor and licensed small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) operator, have been working with the HVAC students on obtaining their Remote Pilot Certificate. “We are teaching them how to safely ﬂy a drone and how to handle emergencies related to a drone,” said Damadeo. In the academic setting students have begun learning about registration, certification requirements, and eligibility for the certificate. Damadeo said, “Over the course of a week we’ve covered how to handle a strong force wind, or ﬂy away conditions; how to safely handle, charge,

and store lithium batteries; what to do if you lose GPS; who the final authority is in case of an emergency; and, how to interpret and read weather reports.” After the lecture, the students practice ﬂying the drone in a field outside their classroom under the guidance of either DeBlanco or Damadeo. An upcoming project involves the students visiting a local church and, utilizing the thermal image camera on the drone, find and propose a fix to any heat loss in the building. “This new skill will better prepare my students for future careers. Employers are already starting to utilize them in order to make their businesses more profitable, efficient, and safe,” said, DeBlanco.

Stop Drop & Roll Middle Country Central School District’s Unity Drive Pre-K/Kindergarten Center students recently learned what to do in a fire emergency in a way that exercised their minds and bodies. During physical

education classes students took part in different activities meant to simulate such actions as extinguishing a fire, crawling out from under a house filled with smoke while also perfecting the stop, drop and roll

procedure. The program, facilitated by the school’s physical education teacher Rollin Haffer, aims to educate students about fire safety while improving stamina, and motor skills.

New Additions Ronkonkoma Middle School recently celebrated the musical and academic achievements of 21 students during a memorable Tri-M Music Honor Society induction ceremony. Tri-M recognizes both middle school and high school music students on

their outstanding academic accomplishments, with focus on community and school service. According to the organization’s website, applicants must be enrolled in at least one music class, have a 2.0 GPA in their core classes and a 3.0 in their music classes and be of strong character.

During the ceremony, Ronkonkoma Middle School Assistant Principal Joseph Licato explained the significance of membership in the Tri-M Honor Society, and congratulated the new inductees, along with the 15 continuing members and their parents.

schools throughout the Connetquot Central School District are working to collect new pajamas for local shelters this holiday season. For every pair of pajamas donated, Scholastic will donate a new book to the shelter.

Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts program students will prepare about 125 dinners for long-term patients and home-bound seniors of the Dominican Sisters of Hampton Bays in what has become an annual and happy undertaking for the culinary program and its students. This marks the eighth year Suffolk County Community College has happily done the holiday cooking. The dinner preparation will take place on Wednesday, November 23rd beginning at 8 a.m. at the Suffolk County Community College Arid A camel needs little water because it sweats very little, and keeps most of the water that is in it’s body.

Grant Awarded On behalf of the Advisory Committee to All for the East End Fund (AFTEE), the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF), has awarded a $2,500 grant to Family Service League (FSL) as one of the recipients of the AFTEE Building Stronger Neighborhood Program.

AFTEE organizers have set up the fund with the intention of distributing grants to various nonprofits working to better the quality of life in the five East End townships. This grant will assist FSL in funding the Community Behavioral Health Collaborative (CBHC)

which supports youth mental health programs for children residing on the East End of Long Island. The program includes workshops for town residents and education professionals that will address children’s mental health issues, and help establish a better
