Canstruction Champions On October 24th, the event collected over 32,000 winners of Canstruction® cans. talent and creativity of the professionals in the built environment,” said Tracy Lobdell, Executive Director, Canstruction® Long Island. “The teams have held fundraisers, solicited donations, and conducted raffles to raise the money needed to purchase the thousands of cans required to bring their designs to life. On the night of the buildout, they are given 12 hours to defy expectation, logic and gravity as they assemble
these fantastic creations.” The exhibit, located at RXR Plaza in Uniondale, was open to the public every day from Friday, October 25th through Wednesday, November 6th, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost of admission was a can of food, which visitors used to cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award. (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment:
• Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what
you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be
used, but they can be expensive. in the walk started at the Village Green and strolled through the streets of Westhampton Beach until they reached the Village Marina. At the end of the walk, volunteers planted pinwheels in the Hope Garden in memory of a loved one who currently suffers or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. Following the walk, those who raised $100 or more were treated to a fall-themed lunch buffet.
Children enjoyed pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, and pictures with Ronald McDonald and delicious treats. Participants also had the opportunity to visit local vendors before and after the walk. Turkeys & Trimmings Needed Lighthouse Mission has been providing Thanksgiving food for families in need for 21 years - by bringing their mobile food pantry right into the communities where there is the greatest need. This year, with SNAP benefits cut severely, and the economy still in recession, donations have been slow coming in. “We need more donated food to feed more than 3,000 people beginning the week before Thanksgiving,” says Wendy Wood, Executive Director of Lighthouse Mission in Bellport - one of the poorest neighborhoods in Suffolk County. “Because our nonprofit has been providing free food to nearly 10% of Suffolk County for all these years, people who are unemployed, struggling single parents, veterans and everyone else in need looks to us for help - about
3,000 people a week and climbing. Our phone is ringing off the hook, but donations have been slow to come in.” If you can help, please spread the word and bring all food donations to Lighthouse Mission, 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays or 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Lighthouse Mission, Long Island’s largest and only weekly mobile food pantry, has been feeding people in need and sharing the love of God for more than 21 years in Suffolk County. In addition, the Mission provides enrichment programs to take children and youth from poverty to purpose. Hundreds of volunteers, community groups, churches, generous donors and businesses contribute to support the Mission’s programs.

LESSONS IN JOURNALISM - Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt recently led a discussion with journalism students from SUNY Old Westbury about her role in government as a member of the Town Board, and the role of journalism in society. Dr. Gail Cholden, Principal of Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti School in Bohemia, recently visited with Mrs. Kaczorek’s class to witness their interaction with the school’s Peer Leaders. Dr. Cholden said that “Mrs. Kaczorek had invited the 5th grade Peer Leaders to class for a ‘Meet
& Greet’ with her excited students. The fifth graders will be coming weekly to assist with social skills.” The children paired up, and learned a bit about one another, as they ‘shared’ and talked to one another. Mrs. Kaczorek distributed a worksheet for the youngsters to work on
together which included their names, ages, and what each of them ‘likes’. Snacks made the visit festive, and party-like. Mrs. Kaczorek thanked Dr. Cholden and the Peer Leaders for the visit, and looks forward to their regular interaction with her students.

Calling All Readers: Input Welcome! In school, I am taking a class called Sociology. For this class, we have been instructed to do a research project. My topic for this project is how the media influences children into engaging in deviant behavior. For this project, I am employing many methods of gathering my data. Students in today’s world are faced with obstacles each and every day. America’s youth is pressured into conforming to society due to the increased prevalence of negative influences depicted in the media. Bad habits are developed as a result of repeated exposure to the products
that companies try to push to children. Via the media, messages of cigarettes, alcohol and other deviant behavior are justified. Because students see their favorite athletes using a product on the TV screen or a celebrity endorsing a certain brand, they will be pushed into buying that item. If companies tell children that “all the cool kids are doing it,” they are going to lead the kids down the wrong path. There are many methods that a company can use in seducing the consumer. The way we display a product to our youth has a direct impact on the way that they utilize it. For instance, the way the
media highlights alcohol, cigarettes and size zero clothing prods kids into purchasing them. If the media displays a product in a positive light, our youth will view the product in a positive light. Inversely, if a good is depicted negatively, a child will not be as likely to pick up that product. The problem is, the media portrays the worst of items in the best of ways. R&S Pet Supplies also donated prizes. Animal Rights Advocacy Group, Brookhaven Animal Shelter, and the North Shore Animal League supported the parade and provided information about local animal rescue dogs available for adoption. A pet waste removal staff member from Poop Away, Inc., East Yaphank, volunteered to clean up after the parade.

A headless horseman led the parade at the ESBOCES Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport followed by a variety of dogs, a goat and a pig. The handlers and animals were dressed as pirates, lobsters, spiders, witches, cavemen, dinosaurs, and a cow. Included in the parade were several local animal rescue dogs that were adopted by ESBOCES teachers. Performing tricks on the ESBOCES lawn was Kelly Belle, Frisbee dog extraordinaire. Owner Dan Huebner and Kelly Belle treated everyone to a howling good show. The parade was themed around Adopt a Shelter Pet Month (October). Dr. Gail Cholden, Principal of Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in Bohemia, welcomed members of the West Sayville Volunteer Fire Department on October 4th. Captain Lucas Domingo and his staff of firefighters spoke to students about fire safety at home, as well as school. Dr. Cholden reminded the students that October is Fire Prevention month. “Every month the children are exposed to instruction regarding fire safety. They have participated in fire drills already this year, and we invited the West Sayville Fire Department to visit
with us and talk to the students about fire safety. The kindergarten and first grade students were also presented with coloring books and firefighter hats. The children loved the fire prevention video, and visiting the fire truck!” Students learned about the need for fire drills at home, and the importance of talking to their parents about developing an emergency escape plan. These local firefighters stressed the value of smoke detectors, and the importance of replacing the batteries on a regular basis. Firefighters Melissa McdManus and
Louis Christensen dressed in the department’s protective work clothes and equipment, allowing students to feel the texture of the jacket, helmet and gloves. During Fire Prevention Month national attention is given to promoting fire safety education. Dr. Cholden thanked the members of the West Sayville Fire Department for visiting with the Bosti students, sharing important safety tips, as well as the colorful fire ‘helmets’ and coloring books.

What to write… It’s funny, as you go through daily life, there are so many topics that seem worthy of a column; yet, when I actually sit down to write my weekly contribution to this newspaper, I am often at a loss for words. I recently received a letter from a supportive reader saying, in part, that he was writing “to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” True enough. I must admit, when I first became interested in the field of Journalism, it was mainly due to the fact that I saw it as a wonderful cross-section of all those topics which interested me – English, History, perhaps some Political Science, Photography… really, the possibilities were endless. As elementary writing assignments
turned to full-fledged papers in middle school, followed by “true” journalistic work on my high school newspaper, I was sold on the career choice. This passion for the field only increased throughout college, as I was afforded the opportunity to explore various genres ranging from hard-hitting investigative pieces to in-depth features and profiles to the more subjective movie/music review. And then there was my senior Honors Tutorial and Thesis, a 50-page dissertation on the effects of September 11th on Journalism as a whole, for better or for worse. I had hopes of eventually expanding upon this mini-novel to broaden its scope into a book of sorts; but as time passed and the immediacy of the moment escaped our collective grasp, it seemed that hindsight would change the entire course of my research. And so it remained, 50 pages of reflection, compiled
between the Spring and Fall of 2003, preserved in hardcover. Fast forward to my job here, where I am fortunate to have the privilege to write this column weekly, and the freedom to choose my topics. Over 400 bylines later, there are times when choosing new material is difficult. Sure, there are plenty of sources – just an average day-in-thelife could probably generate a dozen or so possibilities – but not all inspirations should necessarily be captured in writing. Some are better left to the imagination, where they may one day flourish into more improved, developed ideas. In any case, the fact that I inspire anyone is truly appreciated. When you have a passion for your career, the hope is always that this comes through to others. Whether for an “A” in school, or a fan letter from a stranger…

Money Management 101 (NAPSI)—Teens are more optimistic about their financial future but may depend longer on their parents, according to a major new survey. Teens also expressed concern over paying for higher education. Among the Teens and Personal Finance Survey’s key findings, conducted by Junior Achievement USA® and The Allstate Foundation:
• More than half of teens think students are borrowing too much to pay for college, yet only 9 percent report they are currently saving money for college. • Nearly 30 percent have not talked with their parents about paying for college. • Nearly one in three teens thinks he or she will be 25 to 27 years old before becoming financially
independent. • Teens are unsure about their ability to budget (23 percent), use credit cards (20 percent) or invest money (34 percent). • The majority of teens (76 percent) still report the best time to learn about money management is in kindergarten through high school, but only 29 percent reported programs currently in place. • Of the 33 percent of
teens who say they do not use a budget, 42 percent are “not interested” and more than a quarter (26 percent) think “budgets are for adults.” • More than one-third of teens are either unsure or think their parents do not talk with them enough about money and budgeting. “From our findings, we can infer that teens expect to live with their parents

The Youth Bureau INTERFACE Program is a partnership between good neighbors and the Town of Brookhaven, united in a common effort to provide help to Brookhaven’s less fortunate residents all year round. the bedroom, not moving, and would not respond to her. She tried to call her dad, but then remembered her mom instructing Jilian on how to use the phone in the event of any emergency. That lesson was learned well, as Jilian made the call that brought police and fire department EMT’s from the Nesconset Fire Department. Jilian’s mom is a diabetic, and Jilian’s swift action brought emergency help, and glucose, which brought mom around again. At the September 27th presentation her teacher, Mrs. Corcoran, called her students together and
reminded them of what Jilian had done, and that they had the opportunity to read about her bravery in the local newspapers. Mr. Imbasciani also congratulated Jilian and her mom, and presented the young heroine with a very special ‘challenge’ coin. Imbasciani presented Jilian with this special coin, telling her that as a former U.S. Marine, policeman and fireman he had seen many heroes. He told Jilian that she was as much as hero as those he had served with. Congratulations to Jilian Given, Cherokee Street Elementary School Hero!
PRE-SCHOOL FRIENDS - On Friday, October 11th, Ms. Megan McAlpine’s students boarded a school bus for a trip across town, to visit new friends at the Arthur Premm Pre-School in Oakdale. Ms. McAlpine reported that her students worked with their young friends, and taught them all about pumpkins! RMS students incorporated music, reading, science, math and art into the lesson. Following the presentation by the RMS students, Arthur Premm youngsters worked on colorful crafts that included pumpkins, paint, and clothing-protective aprons!

On October 8th Mr. Angelo Truglio visited Mrs. Debbie Guiney’s music class of at the Idle Hour Elementary School in Oakdale to introduce a challenging ‘fun’ program for learning called ‘I Can Do That’!Kids. Introduced by Idle Hour Principal Mrs. Denise Toscano, Truglio is no stranger to the Connetquot Schools, because he was a Music Educator in the district for more than 30 years, before retiring. Truglio began the program with attentiongetting exercises, as well a colorful video, and introduction of his many ‘creative’ characters.
Those characters included the troublesome ‘Obst’, who seems to provide excuses, and obstacles which prevent students from completing tasks at home, and school. Other important characters in the program are Focus, Dare and Erasor that challenge students to do their best, and continue their efforts if they reach an obstacle to success. I Can Do That!Kids is a program created to help children sustain the desire to succeed. It provides children with tools to help them overcome obstacles and feel capable of meeting everyday challenges, in school or anywhere. Mrs.
Guiney has used the program for the last year, and plans to introduce the system to other elementary schools in the Connetquot School District. Connetquot School District Director of Music Education, Mr. JonMichael Lasher, was in attendance for the Idle Hour presentation, and was impressed with the youngsters’ enthusiasm and grasp of the program. Mrs. Guiney, Lasher, Mrs. Griffith and Mr. Brennan thanked Mr. Truglio for visiting with the Idle Hour 4th graders, and introducing his energetic, and inspiring characters, to their students.
Brain Challenge Students at Connetquot’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in Ronkonkoma had the opportunity to participate in some TV - style game show fun on October 9th, when Peter and Randy of Hollyrock came by for a visit. Slocum Principal Mr. John Delio watched as the excited youngsters competed in a variety of spelling, math and history contests, followed by dancing, Simon Sex and
Hula Hoop challenges! Students were divided into a Blue, and Red, team which would earn points from each contest victory! The ‘Brain Challenge’ uses questions from the more than 5,000 that have been collected, and updated, over the years from teachers covering 15 school subjects. The Brain Challenge TV Game Show is an exciting, fast paced review of what the students have learned, and a wonderful method of

holding their attention. Mr. Delio thanked Peter and Randy for allowing the students to have so much fun, while challenging their school, and dancing, skills. Mr. Delio also thanked the teachers for joining in the activities and game show competition. Slocum PTA members Leigh Ross and Jennifer Duignan arranged for the Brain Challengers visit, and look forward to having them back in the future.

At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million
free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free
credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. New Benefits May Help Keep Seniors Healthier (NAPSI)—Staying healthy just got a little easier if you’re 65 or older. That’s because Medicare now covers many wellness and preventive services free of charge. Older Americans can get important screenings, immunizations and an annual “wellness” checkup without spending a dime, under provisions in the Affordable Care Act that took effect in January 2011. “These services have the potential to add years to your life-and the life of your loved ones,” said AARP board member and geriatric specialist William J. Hall, M.D. “We urge older Americans to get all the preventive services their doctors recommend.” For the first time, Medicare will pay entirely for a host of vital screenings-for colon and other cancers, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis and other chronic conditions. On top of that, Medicare now covers a yearly “wellness” exam that can
spotlight steps you need to take to take charge of your health. As part of this checkup, you can work with your doctor on developing your own prevention plan. These new benefits can make a difference in people’s lives, because they enable older Americans to get the preventive care they need without worrying about cost. Research has shown that individuals are less likely to get health screenings when they have to pay for them. Many older Americans have not been getting important preventive services, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For example, millions of older people at risk for diabetes and colorectal cancer have not been screened for those illnesses. Similarly, millions of older Americans have not received a vaccine for pneumococcal disease, even though research shows that the risk of developing the diseases increases with age and
the presence of chronic conditions. When it comes to staying well, most people know they should eat right, get exercise and keep their weight in check. Now, many can add a new item to the list by taking advantage of Medicare’s new benefits for preventive services. Such services could save your life. Dig Pink Challenge Connetquot High School Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Coach Justin Hertz announced the outstanding success of the 2013 Dig Pink Challenge. On October 16th Coach Hertz’ Lady T-Birds hosted Half Hollow Hills East and came out with an impressive 3-set win against the visitors. The most impressive part of the afternoon, though,

funds, and awareness of the threat of breast cancer. The overall goal of the Dig Pink Challenge is to raise funds to support research, and ‘Living with Cancer’ organizations. With the sale of tasty cakes and cookies, bracelets, t-shirts, hair extensions, raffles and generous donations, the Connetquot community again stepped up in the fight against cancer. The nation-wide Dig Pink effort will enable women, and men, affected by this dreaded disease to regain control of their lives. Sponsored locally by the Suffolk County Volleyball Coaches Association, the program has inspired thousands of high school and college teams across the United States. Congratulations to the Connetquot Girls’ Volleyball program, Coach Hertz and his staff, for organizing such as an important community event. The Girls’ Volleyball team came away from tonight’s match with a big win over a local rival, and the satisfaction that comes with helping people who need their support.

With the support of the girls from the varsity and junior varsity teams, their parents, friends, teachers and local businesses, Connetquot’s Dig Pink Challenge raised $4,125! That sum surpasses the last two year challenges, which produced donations of $2,500 and then $3,332! In just the last three years, the Connetquot Girls’ Volleyball program has brought about an important awareness of the scourge of breast cancer, and donated over $10,000! Coach Hertz said that he’s “ … proud of what our players have accomplished this season, and especially their dedication to this year’s Dig Pink Challenge.” He gives all the credit for the fund-raising success to his players. Dig Pink is the name of the Breast Cancer awareness rally that takes place in gyms all over the country during October, Breast Cancer Awareness month. High school and college volleyball teams are participating in competitive games designed to energize their fans, and generate
