Fire Safety Demo Mr. James Williams, Principal of Connetquot’s Cherokee Street Elementary School in Ronkonkoma welcomed Lakeland FD Captain Ted Imbasciani and his dedicated crew of volunteer firefighters on October 20th. The Lakeland Fire Department captain and crew spoke to Cherokee students about fire safety at home, as well as school. Captain Imbasciani, who is also a Connetquot School District Board

of Education Trustee, talked to students about the need for fire drills at home, and talking to their parents about developing an emergency escape plan. He also stressed the value of smoke detectors, and the importance of replacing the batteries on a regular basis. During Fire Prevention Week national attention is given to promoting fire safety and education. Students enjoyed participating

in a simulation using the Lakeland Fire Department’s Fire Safety (smoke) House, as well as taking a tour of the everpopular bright red fire engine, and Ambulance. Safe Halloween Celebrations Students also participated in Halloween crafts and enjoyed treats throughout the school day. Connetquot High School Student Government members also organized a “Safe Halloween” experience at the high school for local children. The high school students decorated classrooms in different themes for children to “trick-or-treat,” while a DJ played music in the school’s cafeteria.

Fire Safety Presentation

Students and teachers at Connetquot’s Arthur Premm Alternative PreSchool in Oakdale welcomed West Sayville Volunteer Fire Department 1st Assistant Chief Lucas Domingo on October 20th. Firefighter Domingo spoke to the excited youngsters about fire safety at home, as well as school. Domingo began his presentation by showing a short video about the dangers of fire, methods of avoiding injuries and how firefighters work to protect our children and

community. Following a brief question & answer session with the youngsters, Mr. Domingo dressed in his protective gear which included a colorful helmet, gloves, boots, breathing apparatus, jacket and pants. He allowed the children to touch the protective clothing, and stressed that children should not be frightened by the fireman’s protective clothing, mask or tools. safety and education. Students had the opportunity to practice ‘stop, drop and roll’ in the event any of them should have their clothes catch on fire. Another important lesson to be learned was not to search for toys or pets in the event of fire in the home … get out of the house and wait for mom and dad outside. The teachers and all the students, thanked Assistant Chief Domingo for visiting the Arthur Premm School to talk about fire safety. The children were reminded about the safety lessons they learn at school, and were asked to share firefighter Domingo’s safety tips with their siblings and parents at home. Before returning to the fire house, Assistant Chief Domingo distributed ‘junior’ fire fighter head gear, and colorful fire safety booklets to each of the excited youngsters!

their school communities. In the last three years more than 20 Long Island and Westchester middle and high schools have started a SUSS team. These teams have created public service announcements, posters campaigns, mentoring activities, and participated in national campaigns sponsored by GLSEN and Teaching Tolerance. The goal of these campaigns is to create school communities where all students feel safe, valued, and respected. We have had SUSS teams appear on News 12 and receive a national Character Education Partnership Award. Funding from the Long Island Community Foundation through its Youth Violence Prevention initiative has enabled CAPS to develop the website, expand the SUSS program, and share and publicize the work that school teams are doing towards creating safe school climates. “Now all Long Island students will be able to benefit from CAPS’ SUSS initiative, fostering positive school climates where all children can feel safe.
