Pumpkin Fest a Success
T
he Village of Islandia held its Pumpkin Fest on the grounds of Village Hall on October 24th as more than 600 people came down to enjoy the Halloween-themed festivities. Throughout the event, children decorated pumpkins and took part in a Halloween costume parade and contest. They also joined their families as they went on hayrides and walked through a chilling Haunted Castle that kept everyone on their toes. A great time was had by all.

Concept to Creation It’s 5 o’clock on Friday the 13th, deadline day, “odd day” (11/13/15), whatever you want to call it… And here I am contemplating my column, the final piece of the puzzle that is the week’s work here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. By the time you read this, our holiday issue of Seasons™ Magazine will be on the streets, featuring the best of Long Island happenings, some highlights from New York City, and an array of helpful hints to make the shopping and decorating rush go as smoothly as possible. We have even mixed in a few recipes for you to sample at your next holiday gathering. For those unfamiliar with this sister publication,

Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) Ladies’ Varsity Gymnastics team and CHS T-Bird Football team continue to impress fans, family and friends. The Ladies Varsity Gymnastics team recently competed against the Smithtown High School neighbors at home. The Varsity Gymnastics team is in League One this year and Coach Kristen Fusco anticipates tough competition throughout the season. The Connetquot Varsity Football team recently lost a game against William Floyd High School after coming off a 41-0 win against local rival Sachem East. Connetquot Football Coach Mike Hansen looks to build on the team’s second half effort as the season progresses.

LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW,CASAC summed up the event, “Each year, this gathering is an important opportunity for the Long Island recovery community to reflect on both our victories and challenges of the past year, as well as to rally around the crucial issues for the coming year. We have made great strides in 2015 on behalf of Long Islanders struggling with addiction, but there is much left to accomplish.” Families are dealing with the devastating effects of untreated addiction across Long Island and every day the region loses at least one person to fatal overdose. However, it remains uncommon for health plans to cover comprehensive addiction treatment, while unnecessary bureaucratic barriers often stand between someone receiving the help they need and
remaining trapped in an overwhelming - and completely treatable disease cycle. In addition, the event’s Recovery Speaker, discussed her own inspiring journey into and back out of the depths of addiction. Her story underlined the extremely treatable nature of addiction as a disease and offered hope to those who battle this illness or have a family member struggling with it. Warm Clothing Drive The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is hosting a warm clothing drive at their Hauppauge office for Long Islanders in need. They are accepting donations of new and gently used warm clothing from generous donors in the area. Coats, sweaters,
pants, gloves or any other clothing that can protect from the harsh winter season are appreciated. Clothing brought to the LIHC collection bin from November 9th through November 25th at 1383 Veterans Memorial Highway, Suite 26, will
be gifted to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Long Island. Clothing can be dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The Society uses donations like these to help the 200,000 Long Islanders that St. Vincent de Paul
serves annually. These materials are either given away to people in need or sold at an affordable price at St. Vincent de Paul thrift stores. The LIHC is a coalition of health and human service providers and organizations, working

Local Connetquot Central School District (CCSD) Connetquot High School graduate, Stephanie Torns (Class of 2005), was recently cast in the Broadway premier of “Waitress,” opening April 24th, 2016. Torns was an active drama student at Connetquot High School, spreading her acting wings in a number of charitable performances and school plays. Before joining the cast of “Waitress,” Torns was an understudy for the role of Elphaba in the Tony Award-winning musical, “Wicked.”

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced today Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget has been unanimously adopted by all the members of the Islip Town Board with few changes. “I am very happy to report there were very few changes to the proposed budget presented a couple of weeks ago and the Town Board has unanimously adopted Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
“In addition to adopting a fiscally conservative, efficient and transparent budget, we have all worked very hard to provide Islip residents with the information they need to understand where their tax dollars go. Residents may view the details about this budget on the town’s website,” Supervisor Carpenter added. The Town of Islip’s 2016 Adopted Operating Budget, which reflects a very modest increase of 1.54% over the 2015 budget,
is available on the town website at www.islipny. gov. Some of the services and expenses covered by the Operating Budget include: Administrative, Assessment, Building and Grounds Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance, Traffic Safety, Tax Collection, Town Clerk, Public Safety, Parks and Recreation, Water Management, Youth Services, Highway Repair and Snow Removal.

Building a Movement Long Island organizations gathered at the first Progressive Vision for Long Island: Organizing for Success conference. This conference was organized by a new groundbreaking initiative called Long Island Progressive Network that brings together immigration, social justice, LGBTQ rights, environmental issues, labor rights, education, sustainable development and community organizations to work together to build power and to move progressive issues throughout Long Island, the state and the nation. The Conference is a historic event because it is the first time Long Island organizations explored what can happen if we bring together people from many different issue areas that all have an interest in creating positive change on Long Island. Bob Master, Assistant to the Vice President for Legislative, Political and Mobilization Activities for District One of the Communications Workers of America, kicked off the event by giving a national overview of labor struggles. Attendees then gathered for issue workshops and skill building trainings, to hone the skills needed to effect change. “The time has come for our organizations to work and fight together to improve the lives of the residents of
Long Island. Long Island is one of the most segregated communities, there is a major housing crisis, severe income inequality and major corruption. In order to win significant improvements on these issues we must do things differently by banning together and supporting allied organizations’ campaigns” stated Lisa Tyson,

Inconspicuous. No one had even noticed a small crack had formed. I knew that it was only a matter of Time until it would burst. Full of pride, I thought I could hold it back. Little did I know, the fear.

The crack slowly spread, and I knew not what to do. But the crack still grew. Larger and larger, Hopeless in all proposals, I turned tail and ran. Hell hath no fury stronger than the man who runs. Runs away from Time. Callously spreading, Stuck in its dateless decay. Everything consumed. There was no more choice. In the end, I surrendered, surrendered to Time. When will all men learn, never to stand in the way of the wrath of Time!
