Halloween Happenings

Fundraiser Set Several of Broadway’s top veterans, star performers and musicians are spearheading a fundraiser for Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). The production, Broadway Supports LIHSA, will feature popular musical numbers performed by Tony Award nominee Adam Pascal (known for his roles in RENT, Something Rotten!, Disaster!, Memphis, Aida, Cabaret and Chicago), Tony Award nominee Charl Brown (known for his roles in Motown the Musical, Sister Act and Jersey Boys) and Jackie Burns (known for her roles in Wicked, If/Then and the Tony Award-winning revival of Hair). The Broadway stars will sing, dance and share stories about their experiences in the arts. The event will take place on Monday, November 28th, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Seymour Weiner Theatre at the LIHSA campus, located at 239 Cold Spring Road in Syosset. This is the second year that Broadway stars have come together to support LIHSA, which is the only Long Island performing arts high school program that offers world-class training and

preparation for students who are interested in exploring and pursuing careers in the arts. Last year’s show sold out. “It is deeply touching for these talented Broadway entertainers to donate their time to put together an unprecedented performance to support LIHSA,” said Nassau BOCES District Superintendent Dr. Robert R. Dillon. “The evening will not only help raise awareness of our stellar arts programs, it will also provide our current and future LIHSA students the opportunity to see how successful they can become!” For more than 40 years, LIHSA has been a training ground for public school students who want to pursue a career in dance, drama, filmmaking, instrumental and vocal music, musical theater, theater technology and visual arts. Broadway Supports LIHSA is being co-produced and codirected by Jerome Vivona, a Broadway veteran and current artistic director of the American Theater Dance Workshop in New Hyde Park, NY, and Stephen DeAngelis, renowned casting director of the Broadway revival of

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice and producer of over 200 different Broadway concerts in NYC and across the United States. They are working with The Campaign for LIHSA, which was created more than two years ago to help raise funds and awareness of LIHSA. Healthy Habits That Can Have a Lasting Impact

A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives: Keep working. While many working men and women dream of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and for all, they might want to think more about a second career than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia.

While men and women may want to retire from their professions, finding second careers or volunteering close to full-time hours may improve their long-term health and quality of life. Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

from the World Health Organization stated, “This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. It is now a major threat to public health.”

This resistance can occur spontaneously or through misuse of antibiotics or antimicrobials. Prescription medications are not always the culprits, either. Antibiotic use in livestock and food

The health resource Medscape, powered by WebMD, says in a recent survey of 796 clinicians, 42 percent of doctors have admitted to prescribing antibiotics 10 to 24 percent of the time even when they are not sure they are necessary. Patient request is a large factor in such offerings. About 25 percent of patients ask their doctor or nurse for antibiotics. Patients who educate themselves about the proper application of antibiotics may be less likely to request them, and that can help prevent the development of a resistance. Confirm need. Only take antibiotics when a bacteria-, parasite- or fungus-based illness is identified. These illnesses may include

strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections. Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time. Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.

Remembering Those Who Served On November 5th, the Village of Islandia held its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Triangle. Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a Vietnam veteran, was joined by local elected officials, war veterans and representatives from the Lakeland and Central Islip Fire Departments to honor those who served and continue to serve in the armed forces. There was a musical performance by the Central Islip High School

marching band before the ceremony. Jim Altonji, Deacon, St. Joseph Parish in Ronkonkoma, and Tom Brauner, Chaplain, Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144, delivered the invocation. During the ceremony, Mayor Dorman asked those in attendance to remember those local residents who served in the military and have since passed on. He also recognized all the local veterans’ groups that were in attendance.

The ceremony ended with village officials joining war veterans in placing a wreath and bouquets of roses in front of the memorial. After the ceremony, attendees went home with a gift bag containing an American flag and a green light bulb. They were asked to replace their outdoor lights with the green light bulb on Veterans Week as part of the “Greenlight a Vet” program, which honors those who served our country.

Foreign Fluency After undergoing a thorough application process and demonstrating strong foreign language fluency, 84 Connetquot High School students were inducted into the National Foreign Language Honor Society. These students have all maintained an average of 90 percent or better

for eight consecutive quarters in their respective language courses, as well as an overall average of 85 percent or better and no failing marks throughout their high school careers. During the recent induction ceremony, students Taylor Rogan (Italian), Lea Romano (French) and Allison

Having a Ball Students, teachers, friends and family recently witnessed the flying colors and dazzling talents of Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School’s fifth-graders for their performance of the 2016 “Cirque du Jour” circus event, held at Oakdale-

Bohemia Middle School. Bosti Elementary students worked for two weeks during physical education classes to learn special circus skills, tricks and activities. Throughout the course of their training, students learned the skills necessary to work

as clowns, jugglers, stilt walkers and masters of the Diablo Stick. As a culmination to the study, each student had the chance to showcase their skills before the packed audience during a special evening performance.

Determining Outcomes

While community residents and parents were gearing up for the presidential elections, elementary students at Charles E. Walters, West Middle Island and Ridge were researching branches of government, examining the issues and reviewing the debate process in preparation for their own elections. At each school, polling centers were created, election officers were assigned and hallways were decorated. Before casting ballots, students completed registration cards and signed official registers. West Middle Island students cast their vote on which school store item was their favorite; naming noise putty as the decided winner. Additionally, fourth-graders held their own mock presidential

election. Students analyzed positive presidential traits and carefully compared the candidates, electing Hillary Clinton as the 45th president of the United States. To help students understand that everyone has an investment in the outcome of an election, Ridge students chose a reward for reaching a positive behavior goal; dance party, extra recess or movie day. Extra recess was named the winner. At Charles E. Walters, students had two options; no homework or more time at recess. Students endorsed choices by posting essays in the hallways and creating posters. At the end of the day, votes were tallied and no homework was the clear winner, 463 no homework and 335 for extra recess.

“Voting was fun because you got to make your own decision and no one could tell you how to vote,” said Charles E. Walters third grade student Emily Minerva.

Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset. Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken. Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point. The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time. In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat. The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least. Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases. This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts. And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come. That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.
