onnetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School football and cheerleading teams recently raised money for breast cancer awareness during a football game. While the Ronkonkoma T-birds were fighting Eastport-South Manor Middle School on the field, their friends and family were working to raise $1,387 for breast cancer awareness. The teams used raffles, donations and a bake sale to bring the community together.

Wing and its dioramas. (The wing was built in 1970 to complement the adjacent Habitat Room built decades earlier by William K. Vanderbilt II.) Stephanie Gress, director of curatorial services for the Vanderbilt, said, “It’s very exciting to be able to have one of the world’s finest taxidermists undertake this project. It’s rare that we get the funding to do this. Since George was one of the taxidermists who accomplished the extremely difficult and spectacular restoration of our eight-ton, 32foot whale shark -- the largest example of fish taxidermy in the world -we naturally asked him if he would restore the Stoll Wing specimens.” The species -- from the American Northwest, Canada and Africa -include a zebra, blue wildebeest, caribou, sika deer, black bear, moose, wapiti (a type of elk), bighorned sheep and a male and female Arctic walrus.

The restoration work will be completed in two to three months. During George Dante’s visit to the Vanderbilt, he returned a rare Galápagos marine iguana to Mr. Vanderbilt’s original Habitat Room. The iguana’s return is an interesting footnote in the history of the Vanderbilt Museum. In the 1920s, Mr. Vanderbilt hired specialists from the American Museum of Natural History to create his Habitat Room, and they inserted his iguana into a diorama of Galápagos wildlife. Today, the Galápagos marine iguana is protected and cannot be collected. So, when the American Museum of Natural History needed a Galápagos marine iguana for one of its own dioramas, they asked Dante to borrow the Vanderbilt’s iguana, and he made a cast of it for the museum’s exhibit.

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum has begun to renovate its Stoll Wing, home to preserved wild animal specimens brought back from around the world by Charles H. Stoll, a noted explorer and big-game hunter who was also a museum trustee and benefactor. The most visible part of the project will be the restoration of the 20 mounted animal heads that crown the wall above the diorama exhibition cases. Singing Bus Driver Ms. Susan White, Principal of Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School in Bohemia, welcomed Joe Guida, the Singing School Bus Driver, to the campus on September 24th. Guida entertains school children with song, and interactive dancing routines, as he teaches,

and reinforces school bus safety issues. A licensed, and veteran, school bus driver, Guida spent the morning with John Pearl youngsters using colorful displays to highlight the importance of being cautious, and listening to directions from teachers and their bus drivers. He talked about

waiting safely at assigned bus stops, boarding and exiting the bus, buckling up, good bus behavior and emergency evacuation of their school buses. Ms. White thanked Joe Guida for visiting with John Pearl students, and reinforcing such useful tips on school bus safety.

On September 24th, Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Physical Education teachers Ms. Tara West and Mr. Michael Oldis decided to add a ‘twist’ to this year’s initial football instruction sequence. As they brought the students into the gym to discuss the basics of the ‘gridiron game’, they brought in school

principal Dr. Gail Cholden to help demonstrate the fundamentals of catching, passing, and running patterns! Dr. Cholden said that the 5th graders “… learned the history of the game, discussed the odd shape of the ball that’s used, practiced throwing a ‘spiral’, and ran through several ‘plays’.” The

Friends, colleagues and family members attended the September 26th dedication of the Agnes Gaeta Memorial Garden, at Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS). Dozens of fellow teachers, former students, administrators and family friends attended the afternoon dedication, and reception, to honor the memory of a wonderful teacher, and friend. Agnes Gaeta (Lupinacci) was a beloved teacher and mentor at Ronkonkoma Middle School for more than 30 years. During that time she affected the lives

of thousands of youngsters, and colleagues, with her skills and kindness. Agnes passed away too soon, recently, and her RMS friends decided a Memorial Garden would be a loving method of remembering this wonderful friend, teacher, mom, sister and wife. RMS Principal Mr. Charles D. Morea, Assistant Principal Joseph Licato and close friends Debbie Galante, Heidi Edmonds, Jessica Unser and Danielle Donnadoni organized the design and construction of the memorial garden.

Memorial Garden Dedicated At the dedication Heidi Edmonds and Debbie Galante reminisced about the effect Agnes had on their lives, and those of her students. Agnes’ husband, Dr. Louis Lupinacci spoke of Agnes and how much she loved the Ronkonkoma community and its students. He also thanked everyone for the wonderful tribute to Agnes. The Memorial Garden is located in the peaceful courtyard at Ronkonkoma Middle School, just outside the classrooms Agnes used, to enrich the lives of her students.

To be a child once again, that carefree spirit, unconcerned by the world outside of our miniature universe – one of Barbie dolls and tea parties and recess and school friends – shielded from the stress of reality for as long as our parents can protect us. Back to that sense of innocence when we assumed that all those “best” friendships from elementary school would never fade… when we never anticipated a day that those relatives we loved so dearly would ever leave us… when all was right with the world – our world – and

we had no need or desire to look beyond the immediate. Some would say this sense of idealism was misplaced and only served to make the subsequent realities that much harsher; in fact, just a quick look at the children of today would suggest a great loss of that innocence I reminisce over now. And which is better? To grow up jaded, or to develop that cynicism over time? Or, better yet, to not let outside forces beyond our control shape our being to the point of losing our sense of self in the process? If only the right answer was always the simplest. So we grow up, and we

grow. And we realize that each day brings with it new obstacles and reality checks that we may have never anticipated. But this is life, as childhood becomes adulthood, and ultimately, this growth is all part of that process. We can’t have it any other way – and we shouldn’t want to. People come into our lives for a reason, this much is true. Sometimes they stay, other times they go; but either way, we are never meant to be the same. Although, there are definitely days when we could all use a little time on the swings at recess with our friends.

I have ever taken, will boil down to one letter. One decision. Whether I get accepted, rejected or even waitlisted, the decision from that university will shape the rest of my life. Some say it is all luck. Even if you are a stellar candidate, you still have a shot at rejection. I like to think that I am what many would call a “wellrounded student.” I am good in school, I have decent test scores, I am on a sport, I am involved in many clubs and I wrote a decent essay. Sadly, if I get rejected, none of these factors will matter. They wouldn’t carry any weight.

The point that I am trying to make is that if you don’t get in, don’t sweat it. The place you spend your four years does not define you. Everything always works out for the best.

focus our restoration efforts on returning the ecological functions of these marshes by removing invasive plants, allowing native plants to return and restoring natural tidal flows. The restoration efforts will provide important wildlife habitat and enhance the refuges’ value for coastal protection.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has awarded contracts to two New York companies to begin cleanup and tree removal efforts at eight national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Coastal Environment Group, Inc. received a $2.5 million contract for the debris removal. The company is a small, minorityowned business based in Edgewood, NY. It has worked with the federal government on major environmental projects including Hurricane

Katrina response and remediation at Superfund sites, and has committed to hiring local workers and supporting local businesses. Coastal Environment Group will begin with aerial and ground damage assessments to develop a project plan. Debris removal should begin in the next few weeks. SavATree, a tree removal company with offices in Brookville and Southampton, NY, will remove downed trees that are causing public safety hazards at several refuges. Tree removal will begin in the next few days. Both companies will take precautions to minimize environmental damages during the project. Service biologists and independent project inspectors will advise crews and monitor progress. For safety

considerations, it may be necessary to close national wildlife refuge areas during periods of heavy work. The public will be notified of any closures in advance. The $11 million marsh restoration project will restore and enhance 432 acres of salt marsh at the Wertheim and Seatuck National Wildlife Refuges and the Lido Beach Wildlife Management Area, in the Long Island towns of Shirley, Islip and Hempstead in Suffolk and Nassau Counties. Restoration and mitigation projects are part of a comprehensive, multi-agency Hurricane Sandy Resiliency plan that Department of the Interior Secretary Sally Jewell recently announced in advance of the storm’s oneyear anniversary. The refuge has just begun project planning and will

update the community as contracts are awarded and work moves forward. Long Island refuges include 6,500 acres of important nesting, wintering and migratory stop-over locations for hundreds of species of birds, and hosts 465,000 visitors annually. The refuges also protect threatened and endangered species, fish

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has received almost $15 million in Hurricane Sandy recovery appropriations for coastal cleanup and marsh restoration at national wildlife refuges on Long Island. Contracts have been awarded to fund debris and downed tree removal. Battle Of The Books The Connetquot Central School District Board of Education recently honored several middle school students for their achievements during the annual, Suffolk County-wide Battle Of The Books, a competition between all the Suffolk County Libraries which took place at The Javits

Lecture Center at Stony Brook University. The students were part of the Connetquot Public Library team. The competition gives students two months to read several books, and each library’s team battles for the top by answering 80 questions divided into four intense rounds. Out of the 41

participating Suffolk County libraries in the competition, the Connetquot Public Library tied for 7th place. The Connetquot Public Library also received the Team Choice Award, a non-scoring award voted by other teams that determines which team other enjoyed battling the most.

Champions Of Children The Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. (CCCS) held its Champions of Children luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York on October 18th. The event paid tribute to two Long Island champions: Ken Rosenblum, associate dean for administration and director of the Veterans’ and Service Members’ Rights Clinic at Touro Law Center, and Dr. Shaun L. Superintendent Search The Connetquot Board of Education has begun its search for a new superintendent with the assistance of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. Eastern Suffolk BOCES is experienced in this process and the search for a new superintendent will be conducted by Mr. Raymond Fell, Search Consultant. Mr. Fell and ESBOCES Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Gary Bixhorn, met with the Connetquot Board on July 16, 2013 to review the search process and timeline. Community and staff

members are asked for their input via an online survey through Friday, November 22nd. Areas such as rating the importance of the potential candidate’s qualifications and personal characteristics, as well as his/her abilities and experience with school staffing, instruction, board relations, district operations, and finance, will be polled. The survey can be accessed by clicking on the link on the home page of the district’s website at www.ccsdli.org, or a copy can be picked up at the District Office at 780

Ocean Avenue in Bohemia. Recruitment efforts will be extensive with interested candidates submitting application information through December 6th, 2013. Interviews are expected to begin in January 2014. The Board of Education encourages all residents to participate in developing the profile for the new superintendent by completing the survey. This information will help the Board make this important decision.

Launching An Initiative

Just One Life, a community service initiative designed to protect residents from carbon monoxide (CO) and fire danger, was recently launched with an inaugural event at Centereach Fire Department. The Board of Fire Commissioners, along with the Chiefs of the Centereach Fire Department, were joined by representatives of Briscoe Protective Systems Inc., a premier supplier of fire alarm, security, video and access control products, on October 29th to welcome local families as the first beneficiaries of the Just One Life program. During the event, each family was given a smoke/ CO detector. “Briscoe is honored to partner with fire districts like Centereach, whose volunteers risk their lives daily for our communities,

and work to promote fire safety awareness by giving out devices,” said Bob Williams, President, Briscoe Protective Systems Inc. “What makes the Just One Life initiative unique is taking fire safety an additional step, by ensuring the devices are installed in the homes. I am proud of the Briscoe staff volunteers whom have stepped up to install the devices into the homes.” According to the National Fire Protection Association, (NFPA), almost two-thirds of home fire-related deaths result from the absence of properly functioning life safety devices. NFPA also notes that fire-related deaths are more frequent between December and February. As winter on Long Island approaches, the importance of having

these devices in the home becomes critical. The Just One Life initiative allowed Centereach fire officials to identify local residents who could benefit from the program. Recipients were selected based on financial or physical limitations. These families will have the units installed during the next few weeks, and over the next month, the initiative will continue with more device handouts and installations at the other Suffolk County Fire Districts that are cosponsoring this program in their communities. The intent is for the Just One Life initiative to be an annual fire safety program.
