Down syndrome, autism and other related cognitive conditions. Accomplishing this in a timely fashion not only reduces the possibility of injury, but has proven to be life-saving. To further the agency’s efforts, ADRC has provided informative palm cards to help officers on patrol determine whether a person they’ve located is showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office has since provided these cards to other law enforcement agencies on Long Island. “When we do these presentations with the Sheriff’s Office, they always request the palm card,” says Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, ADRC. “They use them extensively, and so do we.” This relationship began in March when ADRC invited representatives
from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office to participate in ADRC’s Annual Education Conference & Expo. Subsequent to the Conference, Joan Motley, Outreach Coordinator for ADRC, invited the Sheriff’s representatives to speak at ADRC’s Caregiver Support Groups. The Sheriff’s Office conducted six presentations at ADRC’s caregiver support groups, which resulted in many families enrolling their loved ones in the program. ADRC has offered a courtesy table to the Sheriff’s Office at the West End Walk, which was held in August, where attendees learned about the importance of the Project Lifesaver program. The Sheriff’s Office has also been invited to attend ADRC’s East End Walk in October

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund held its 3rd Annual Rock & Bowl event last week in an effort to provide three scholarshi ps for students looking to continue their education and promote aware ness among young people not to drink and drive. Over the past three years, the fund has offere d close to $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at the Copia gue Memorial High School. This year, we hope to expand by offering the awards to other districts. Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. The Fund and the scholarships are simple; being a 501c3 not-for-profit, all the money raised goes into a managed fund similar to your retirement 401k. This money earns interest and dividends. This earned money then goes to the awards, leaving the principal amou nt there for many years to come.

The Walsh’s lost a big piece of their family back in June three years ago, and feel it every day. Brittney’s mom, Cheryl said, “At times, it’s hard to smile and laugh, and the scholarship writing component helps us do it again.” What makes these three scholarships unique is they all require the scholar to write a 250-word essay detailing “The Funniest Thing You Ever Did” or “The Funniest Thing You Ever Saw.” Chery l continued to say, “You’d be surprised what these kids come up with.”

A non-profit organization, Project Lifesaver aims to increase the location and recovery rate for those who wander off due to Alzheimer’s, dementia,

The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood to help ensure a sufficient blood supply throughout the holiday season. A seasonal decline in donations often occurs from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day when donors get busy with family gatherings and travel. However, patients don’t get a holiday vacation from needing lifesaving transfusions. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. Lorie Alwes remembers her father being called often to give blood – even on holidays. He had type O negative blood, the universal blood type. “One time it was in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner and off he went without hesitation,” she recalls. “He explained to us kids that his blood was used in emergency situations and could possibly save another life.” Years later, Alwes learned that she also has type O negative blood. She has since donated whenever needed and has encouraged her 17-yearold son to carry on the lifesaving family tradition that was so important to his grandfather.

To be eligible, students must be high-school seniors attending twoor four-year accredited educational institutions for the first time in the fall of 2016. Prestigious Nomination Two Longwood High School seniors, Jenny (Ruojing) Fang and Jack (Yunjie) Su, have been selected as candidates for the prestigious United States Presidential Scholars Program. The Presidential Scholar recognition was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students. Longwood High School Principal Scott Schuster stated, “Our students strive for excellence, both inside and outside the classroom. These nominations are the direct result of Jenny and Jack’s outstanding accomplishments. I am truly proud to see them recognized for their exceptional talent.” Nominated by Senators John J. Centereach High School senior Isaiah Washington, Newfield High School senior Brianna Reyes, Dawnwood Middle School eighth grader Joshua Ackerler and Selden Middle School eighth grader Tyler Alestra are this month’s honorees. “These students not only impress us academically, but through their positivity, values and character,” said Middle Country Central School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “We are extremely proud of the people they are becoming in the classroom and beyond.” Centereach High School senior Isaiah Washington will graduate in June 2016 having completed four Advanced Placement (AP) courses and seven collegelevel courses. Outside the classroom, Isaiah is heavily involved in the musical department. He has been in musical productions since
his time at Dawnwood Middle School. In his NYSSMA competitions, he has earned perfect scores for his vocal and piano solos for six years and was recently selected to participate in the NYSSMA All-State festival in Rochester, NY. He was also recognized to perform this year at the NAFME All-National Festival in Nashville, TN. Isaiah is also involved in a lot of charity work through his church where he worked with disabled, orphaned children in Ecuador and sang for patients at St. Charles Hospital. After college, Isaiah hopes to pursue a doctorate in Music Education and teach music at the high school or college level. Newfield High School senior Brianna Reyes is currently enrolled in four college level courses and one advanced placement course. Brianna is the G.O. President, playing an active role in the planning, execution and participation in events such as Homecoming, Trick or Treat Street, Holiday Lane, blood drives and many other day-to-day tasks. She is also a member of National Honor Society,
the varsity field hockey team and varsity lacrosse team. Brianna plans to attend William Paterson University where she was scouted to play field hockey and will major in elementary education. Joshua Ackerler has maintained High Honor Roll status since entering Dawnwood Middle School in sixth grade. He is now an eighth grader and is praised by teachers for the pride he takes in his work. Josh’s strong character was commended by his teacher who added that it is a rare find for someone at Joshua’s young age. Tyler Alestra has shown dedication and diligence toward his school work. Tyler was a member of the Selden Fire Department Juniors and a competitor on a community soccer league, which he has temporarily put on hold to focus on his studies. He is admired by Selden Middle School staff for his positive attitude and character, having helped a student when visibly upset about an interpersonal conflict. Tyler aspires to become a psychologist to help those around him.

While community residents and parents were exercising their right to vote on Tuesday, November 3rd, students in Ashley Ippolito’s kindergarten class were carefully voting on which endangered animal would be symbolically adopted as their class mascot: Sea Lion, Chimpanzee or Panda. The students learned in-depth details about the three endangered species in need of help, and discussed habitats, characteristics,
diet and the reasons why the animals are facing extinction. In preparation for the election process, the students read books and watched videos emphasizing the power of voting. On Election Day, the students stood on line, at a respectful distance to ensure privacy, to receive their registration cards and ballots. After a tough race, votes were tallied and the Panda was the decided winner. The students will adopt
the Panda through the World Wildlife Fund and will receive an adoption certificate, informational cards and a stuffed Panda for the classroom. According to student Jefrey Garcia Reyes waiting for the results was the toughest part. “I was so happy to find out which animal would win,” he said. Kindergartener Addison McCormack enjoyed the entire voting process, “I liked getting the I Voted sticker.”

More than 200 Connetquot Central School District 3rd 5th grade students, 7-10 years old, recently learned fire safety and fire prevention skills from Lakeland Volunteer Fire Department firefighters. After the lesson students also explored fire engines and a
fire safety smokehouse. As part of an Edith L. Slocum Elementary School initiative to teach students how to respond in dangerous situation, students learned how fire trucks respond to emergency calls and how each truck is equipped with water, fire hoses, foam
and a variety of rescue equipment for breaking and entering burning buildings. Students also had a chance to explore a mobile fire safety house and learn how to escape from a burning building safely.
Bee Buddies Connetquot Central School District’s Duffield Elementary School recently welcomed two new fifth grade students, Edward Gutierrez and Isabella Satalino, to the Duffield Elementary School community.
The new students were introduced to their “Bee Buddies” program mentors, who are trained how to assist new students managing the stressful transition to a new school. Two Duffield Elementary School students in each
class are chosen to be “Bee Buddies” and their job is to spend time with the new students and help them feel at home and acclimated to their new school environment.

Perplexity of Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I find it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums
and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conflict without the need to touch on it in this column. South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers has always been a forum for celebrating our local school and community
happenings, of offering parents, teachers and coaches the opportunity to spotlight their children – the next generation of up-and-coming debaters. If you’re searching for controversy, there are plenty of mediums to find it. This need not be one of them. It seems to me that, whatever your lot in life, the best approach is always an objective one. Listen before you speak; think before you write; and respect before you reproach. Children learn what they see, and live what they learn; and there is more than enough hatred to go around without bringing it into the home or classroom, onto the field or stage. We, the adults, are the example. Let’s create one we can be proud to pass on.

For months, I’ve been agonizing over what will be one of the biggest choices of my life. During the fall, high school seniors from all over the world fill out their applications and make their college decisions. For me, it turned out to be an easy choice. I have decided to apply early decision to the University of Miami. Only time will tell if my dream of attending “The U” will become a reality. I am looking forward to potentially spending the next four years alongside my brother, who is currently a sophomore at the University of Miami. Although he transferred there - and I’m applying straight out of high school -
we both realize that Miami will provide opportunities for us that cannot be found anywhere else. The vast challenges and possibilities that can potentially be afforded to me by the University of Miami are enticing. I am excited to undertake the next chapter of my life, and I can only hope that chapter takes places in Coral Gables. When I attended the Manhattan Information Session on October 22nd, I was amazed by the presentation. The speakers detailed the financial aid process, the historic football dynasty and the stellar academic reputation associated with the University of Miami.
After the event, I had a chance to speak to Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions. He was happy to answer all the questions that I had regarding the admissions process and left me feeling comfortable about my choice to apply early decision. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and professional he was. I would recommend attending an information session like this to anyone interested in applying to institutions of higher education, and more specifically, The U. That evening truly sealed the deal; I want to be a Miami Hurricane in the fall of 2016.
