Project 9 Line www.project9line.org

Project 9 Line is a non-proﬁt organization that was formed in 2014 by Patrick Donohue Their focus is to bridge the communication gap between veterans and civilians. Through outreach, communication and purpose, they enable veterans to express themselves uniquely through forms of art.

Patrick Donohue is a veteran himself and has an inspiring story of his own. He served in the Army on active duty from 2008 to 2012. He was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan from May of 2010 to April of 2011. Later, he reenlisted into the Army reserves, which he served in from 2014 to 2016. After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life. Anxiety and depression ﬁlled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.” Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t ﬁnd any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself. Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life.

In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I ﬂoat in a ﬂoat tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. Whether you’re a veteran wants to sign up for one to heal, learn or just to be a part of something locally, there is a spot for you to sign up for a class offered at Project 9 Line. State lawmakers gathered at the Long Island Welcome Center on the Long Island Expressway to commemorate the success of their hard work to address safety and efficiency concerns on the Long Island Expressway. The team of legislators, including members of both the state Senate and Assembly, were able to successfully direct attention to and ensure state infrastructure resources were dedicated to fixing the LI Expressway. The governor’s office announced last week that the project would replace more than 280 miles of pavement on key stretches of the LI Expressway in Suffolk County, significantly improving the mobility of the hundreds of thousands of motorists travelling between Long Island and New York City every day. In addition to hundreds of miles of new road in Suffolk County, the project will also address issues

State Lawmakers Celebrate Win In Fight To Repair Long Island Expressway

(StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job. This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families. One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope. Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program.

Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their

creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck

all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room. The Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program gives that opportunity back to deployed parents.

The Connetquot High School Gymnastics team celebrated ‘Senior Night’ with flowers, gifts, cheers, and a nail-biting win over conference rival Middle Country HS at home on October 20th. The T-birds maintain their undefeated status with an overall record of 9-0.

Congratulations to Connetquot’s graduating seniors, Noel Cutinella, Melissa Giordano and Arianna Platti, and thank you for your dedication, and leadership. Arianna Platti placed third in the All-Around (34.9), while Alex Melchiona won with a

score of 36.625. The T-birds squeezed by the visitors with an impressive 168.5 – 166.3 outcome. Connetquot is looking forward to the Suffolk County Championships which are scheduled to begin shortly.

Legislator Caracappa Donates School Supplies

Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa (Fourth District) recently visited Eugene Auer Elementary School in Lake Grove, a school supply collection site for Middle Country Central School District. Moira Kochis, the District’s donation coordinator, arranged to meet with Caracappa to accept a large array of school supplies collected from his drive this past August. “On behalf of the MCCSD Social Work Department, thank for your donations of school supplies,” Ms. Kochis commented. “We greatly appreciate Legislator Caracappa’s generosity and thoughtfulness. On October 20th Connetquot HS girls’ varsity soccer coach Ryan Cavanagh welcomed conference rival Northport HS for the annual ‘Senior Night’ game. Prior to tipoff seniors from each team were called out onto the field with their parents, and recognized for their leadership and career achievements. According to coach Cavanagh, this was one of the largest

graduating classes of T-birds, who have shaped the program over their careers, and will be missed. Millions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental and physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries. Many veterans in need are not just in need of medical attention. Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries. Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways. • Visit a veterans hospital. Contact a local veterans’ hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans. Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity. • Help a neighbor. Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans. • Offer professional services free of charge.
