In an effort to ensure that children are making healthy choices and staying safe Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti and Idle Hour elementary schools recently hosted important educational programs centered on the topics of stranger danger and saying no to drugs and alcohol. Through an interactive puppet presentation, provided by Matt Barbis and Patrick Chierichella, Bosti students learned

about the dangers that can exist in dealing with strangers. Throughout the event, the presenters spoke about strategies students can develop with the help of their families to minimize those dangers. The program was provided courtesy of the Rose Brucia Foundation. Idle Hour Elementary School students and staff learned about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle during a

recent visit with Suffolk County Police Officer Wendy Verlotte. As part of the Suffolk County Police Department “Police Smart” Health and Safety program, Officer Verlotte used a multi-media presentation to share ageappropriate information with students, on topics such as the dangers of smoking, as well as the use of illegal drugs.

The Lost Holiday

the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

Officer, Central Islip Fire Department - who has organized and facilitated numerous fire safety programs for the residents - hosted demonstrations in the department’s “Safety Trailer,” showing residents how to stay safe in the event of a house fire and distributed literature and other items regarding fire prevention. National Fire Prevention Month helps raise awareness on fire safety, provides information on how people can prevent fires from happening, and how to stay safe in the event of a fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association,

a fire occurs every 24 seconds nationwide. Due in part to the use of portable heating devices, the colder months tend to be a time of increased home fires, making October the ideal month to communicate fire safety. During the Pancake Breakfast, Mayor Allan M. Dorman and Village volunteers served pancakes to the residents in attendance. High school honor students across Long Island who choose to become physical therapists, occupational therapists, or physician assistants can get a head start on their college careers through a new Integrated Honors Track at Touro College School of Health Sciences (SHS) in Bay Shore. The program was created for those seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in the sciences and a commitment to pursuing an education in the PT, OT, or PA professions. “The Integrated Honors track is a fantastic opportunity for highachieving students to progress seamlessly into their chosen future,” said Art Sullivan, Interim Coordinator of the

Integrated Health Sciences Honors Track and Assistant Chair for Undergraduate Studies. Healthcare professions continue to be among the most desirable careers in the U.S. In a 2016 U.S. News survey on The Best Healthcare Jobs, Physician Assistant ranked #4 with a median salary of $95,820; Physical Therapist ranked #12 with a median salary of $82,390; and Occupational Therapist ranked #17 with a median salary of $78,810. In recent years, Touro’s pass rates for graduates in those departments have ranged from 90-100 percent. Dr. Louis Primavera, Dean for the SHS, noted the Integrated Honors Track helps young students secure their place in very prestigious healthcare

programs. “We are able to provide these students with a pathway to their future careers, and to these professions- a select group of talented candidates.” Applications are available in high school guidance offices throughout Suffolk and Eastern Nassau counties, and through college recruiters. Touro’s admissions officers will review applications beginning in November. This morning Deputy Presiding Officer welcomed home Lance Corporal Matthew McGiff before the start of the 2nd annual Suffolk County Marathon. A 2014 PatchogueMedford graduate, Lance Corporal McGiff returned

Saturday evening from a deployment in Iraq and was met by a Boots on the Ground NY escort at JFK. He ran the 5K with his father and brother; his sister ran the halfmarathon with his cousin. The marathon, half-

marathon and 5K started in Patchogue Village. More than 2,500 runners participated in the race and all net proceeds from the event will go toward expanding veterans’ services in Suffolk County.

Training Program

On October 25th at Brookhaven Town Hall, Councilman Michael A. Loguercio, Jr. and the Brookhaven Youth Bureau sponsored a NARCAN Training Program, the third in a series of programs on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. NARCAN is a medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose. “As Town Board Liaison to the Brookhaven Youth Bureau, I want to thank the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office for providing free drug testing kits and everyone who participated in such an important event that can help save lives,” said Councilman Loguercio. “As someone EXCITING OPPORTUNITY - Touro College Prof. Jill Horbacewicz, Chair/Director who attended the Youth of the Physical Therapy department, teaching a class. Bureau’s first NARCAN

Training Program in June, I personally have been trained in how to administer this medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose. This epidemic has an effect on so many people and sadly, the statistic is that Suffolk County has more deaths from heroin overdoses than any other county in New York State. We need to continue working together to help provide ways to combat this horrible epidemic.” During the program, employees from Suffolk County EMS explained how to recognize the signs and symptoms of an overdose and how to administer Nasal NARCAN. They also explained what to do until EMS services arrive. After

the training, those who participated received a NARCAN kit. Approximately 200 residents have attended the two NARCAN Training Programs held by the Town in the last five months. In July, the Town held a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Education, Prevention and Awareness Program, highlighting the current heroin epidemic facing our community. In conjunction with National Fire Prevention Month, the Village of Islandia distributed free smoke detectors to the first 100 families during its Pancake Breakfast with the Mayor on October 29th. bookmarks with a class in India. After locating India on a map and discussing the geographic and cultural differences and similarities with the country, students fashioned individual

bookmarks with the help of librarian Karen Deaner. They chose materials, followed a procedure, and ultimately evaluated their bookmark while looking for ways to improve it.

SENIOR EVENT - On October 25th, Councilman Kevin LaValle hosted a “Three in One” Senior Event at the Encore Senior Village in Lake Grove. Scholarships Available Each year, the Long Island Horticultural Society (LIHS) offers scholarships to Long Island college students enrolled full-time or part-time in a horticulture program. In 2017, the Society will offer two scholarships of $1,000 each. Founded in 1934, the LIHS promotes the study of horiculture on Long Island by helping to further the education of committed students planning a career in the field. Students interested in applying for these scholarships can find

The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 9:00 a.m., with

the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:45 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 11:00 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to

State’s Heckscher State Park and Bayard Cutting Arboretum. “We want to continue to make this event a destination marathon while highlighting our downtowns and our wonderful assets along the south shore,” added County Executive Bellone. “In addition to reversing the course, we worked with our local chambers of commerce and local business leaders to organize various events in order to enhance the experience for our spectators and visitors.” The 2016 Suffolk County Marathon was the third marathon County Executive Bellone ran, previously running in the 2014 New York City Marathon and 2015 Suffolk County Marathon. The County Executive’s participation was inspired by his commitment to live a healthier lifestyle, which includes a 69 pound weight loss since 2013. The FreedomFest: Taste of Long Island Festival was also held in down Patchogue park in conjunction with the marathon, half marathon and 5k race to highlight the region’s local businesses, such as local craft breweries, award winning wines, and local eateries and produce. The Taste of Long Island Festival was made possible with the support and partnership of New York State, the Village of Patchogue, the Long Island Wine

Council, the Long Island Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce and the nonprofit veterans’ organization Project9Line. In addition, through the efforts of Jayson Velez of the Jay Scott Band and Patrick Donohue, founder of Project9Line, more than 20 local bands and musicians performed throughout the event across three stages. The Suffolk County Marathon and Half Marathon additionally is part of the 2016 Suffolk County Veterans Running Series, a series of local races throughout the County that will raise additional funds for veterans causes. The previous races included the Annual Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer “I DID THE GRID” Run/ Walk, Navy SEAL Michael Murphy 4-Mile Run Around the Lake, Oakdale Chamber of Commerce Firecracker 5, Airbone Tri Team 5k and the Cow Harbor Warriors Captain Joseph J. In a recent effort to promote the importance of kindness and compassion, Idle Hour Elementary School teachers and staff in the Connetquot Central School District have implemented a “Blue Card” initiative to recognize those students in the building caught doing something that positively reflects their

school. Students are rewarded “Blue Cards” for such tasks as helping other students carry their books, returning money they found in the hallway, or behaving extremely well on the bus. Once a student is given a blue card, they are met with positive praise from the office staff and the principal, and are

rewarded with a small token of appreciation for their positive behavior. The initiative is one of the latest programs organized by the school’s DASA (Dignity for All Students Act) team, which meets monthly to plan for new buildingwide initiatives and activities to promote kindness and dignity for all students.

Connetquot Central School District recently took part in the annual “United We Stand Week/ Red Ribbon Week” as an opportunity to teach students the importance living an active and healthy lifestyle. In honor of the week’s theme, Idle Hour and John Pearl Elementary School students had the chance to learn about the dangers of smoking during assembly programs conducted by representatives from the Suffolk County Department of Health. Throughout both programs, the speakers used multi-media presentations and various interactive experiments to explain the power of

nicotine and the effects of tobacco smoking on the body. A United We Stand Literacy Connection section was set up during a book fair at Cherokee Elementary School. This area helped to guide students in the direction of books that promote self-esteem and healthy lifestyle choices. Additionally, bulletin boards near the entrance of the school displayed photos of students and their families partaking in healthy activities, alongside photos of staff and students who posed for “Drug-Free Selfies.” Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently welcomed

talented singer/storyteller Brian Chevalier as an opportunity to entertain the students while encouraging good health, personal development and making good choices in life. In celebration of Red Ribbon Week, an aerial photo in the shape of the letters “USA” was taken of the Slocum Elementary students and staff. Since its inception in 1985, parents, staff and the youth of communities across the country are encouraged to wear Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the drug issue in America.

Students of Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently able to put their classroom knowledge to use during a fun and exciting game

show assembly called the “Hollyrock Brain Challenge.” Under the direction of the game show emcee, students were asked to recognize numbers and letters, and to answer

grade-level appropriate history questions. Students were even challenged to demonstrate their ability to dance, use a hula hoop, and test their strength in a tug of war competition.
