New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a seven-day inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that minimum. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood. We’re hoping that you will share this urgent message to encourage folks to come out to donate. That little extra action can make the difference in the lives of the patients we fight for together. For years, the Sayville School Community has rallied with fundraisers and appeals on behalf of local families whose loved ones are fighting cancer. This fall, there has been a spirited response to let yet another local family know that they are in the prayers and thoughts of a sympathetic community. With a motto “We are stronger than cancer,” 150 Sayville High School students and two faculty teams (the Math Team and The PhilA-Busters) competed in a dodgeball tournament, arranged by the Junior Class and refereed by brave class advisers Lynn Ann Perlin and Sue Hart, to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Making the event memorable, the math department invited the recently retired Marie Sinclair back to form a unified front. They arrived in creative team t-shirts with headbands. Adam Brown, Math Department chairman, said it was all good fun although a bit daunting against the student teams. He was especially impressed that every teacher in his department was able “to come back to work” the next day after the strenuous competition against the younger players. Principal Ron Hoffer commended the “Sayville High School Math Department” for showing up “in ‘grand fashion.’ The collegiality demonstrated by our colleagues did not go unnoticed,” Mr. Hoffer concluded it was “a great night for a great cause.”

Halloween Window-Painting Tradition As if on the winds of the off-shore nor’easter, Sayville High and Middle School art students blew into town to paint the windows of select, local merchants with Halloween-themes they designed. Generations of students have enjoyed the annual tradition—for nearly forty years—in all kinds of weather. So, despite gusty winds and threats of showers, teams of art students, chaperoned by their teachers, magically transformed the

storefronts into ghoulish or fanciful Halloween visions. Again, as part of their long-standing partnership with Sayville Schools, the Kiwanis Club donated the painting supplies to this year’s fresh talent of art students—a win-win for all involved. Weekend visitors to Downtown Sayville’s Fall Festival, held on Saturday, October 12th, were treated to these spooky compositions, while they participated in the Annual Halloween Parade, the Pie-Baking Contest, the

Carved-Pumpkin Contest, the Scarecrow Contest, along with the other activities planned for the day. GIRL SCOUT TROOP 1371 HONORED - Councilman Michael Loguercio honored Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Multilevel Troop 1371 for painting the Little Free Library in Medford at Granny Road Park as part of their Bronze Award Project. There are currently six Little Free Libraries located in the Longwood Community including Diamond in the Pines Park, Yaphank Lake, Bartlett Pond Park, Ridge Community Park, and the Carmans River Nature Trail and Canoe Launch. This Literacy Friendly Neighborhood grassroots initiative is sponsored by the Friends of the Longwood Public Library. The Little Free Libraries are stocked by librarians with books donated by community members. Since March 2019, approximately 4,700 books have been added to the Little Free Libraries. Councilman Loguercio said, “Thank you once again to the young ladies who worked so hard to bring this beautiful addition to the Granny Road Park. You all are wonderful role models for your peers to emulate. This Little Free Library will be well used by all the families that visit the park.”

What do Cella Bagels, Slices Pizza, Jazz Audio and Lighthouse Insurance all have in common? They are all in Selden and they are even all in the same strip! What you may not know is that they are all owned by the same person. John Rose, born and raised in Selden, is a serial entrepreneur. John’s father, Joe Rose, was the jack-of-all-trades type. He was always dabbling in something new. This ambitious trait was passed on to John. Straight out of Newfield High School, John became

an auto mechanic with a vision of owning his own gas station. While looking for opportunities, he started a towing company called Sunrise Towing. After a few years, Sunrise Towing was doing well and John was ready to sell.

The insurance industry had caught his attention. John himself was not an insurance agent, so he opened an insurance agency and hired a licensed broker. Sunrise Insurance was now his second successful start-up and he went on to sell that also. Throughout the 1980’s, John started to purchase local pieces of property. He set his sights on a few

John went back into the insurance business, opening Lighthouse Insurance Agency (1988) and Spirit Insurance Agency (serving Nassau County since 1980). They now have 11 locations all over the island. You may be wondering about SkyTan Tanning Salon, which is also in that strip. Yes, that too was started by John, but he has since sold that. He also owns JVC, a radio station, which offers a few channels including Party 105 and My Country. Curious to know if anything he has ever done wasn’t a complete success, he did say he opened a music recording studio, which he admitted was a flop.

Why a music recording studio? Because John is also in a band called The Kidds….of course he is! John wanted to make sure it is known that he has a partner in some of these businesses. Twenty-six years ago he partnered with Gene Cella to open Jazz Audio and together they own and operate that, Cella Bagels and Slices Pizza. John recently jumped into yet another endeavor, fuel oil delivery. He started Fuel Jewel Oil and according to his advertisement, they offer “Oil cheap but not cheap oil”. When I asked him, “Why oil and why now?” he stated that he always tries to stay diversified. John is well known and well respected in our community. There are many important byproducts of all these businesses that he starts, owns and successfully operates. First, all the jobs

he has created for local residents, he contributes greatly to our tax base, the smart use of land and well maintained buildings, and of course the great food and services his businesses provide. My favorite is Cella Bagels because of the retro diner feel and Donna Marie always makes the perfect egg sandwich! With all this experience, John has a seat on the Town of Brookhaven Planning Board. His goal in taking this position was to ensure that businesses were treated fairly and smart business growth could be fostered through the system. However, as if he doesn’t have enough going on, he still wants to open a gas station.

Charity Car Show, Food And Toy Drive The Brookhaven Youth Bureau is teaming up with All Suffolk Car Clubs to present their Annual Charity Car Show, Food and Toy Drive on Sunday, November 10 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This annual event is sure to be fun for the entire family, as club members will be displaying their cars at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville, to raise donations for families in need through the Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Program. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to contribute to the Thanksgiving Food Drive

and new, unwrapped toys for children to open during the holiday season. Last year’s event raised $2,900 for turkeys and 1,500 pounds of non-perishable food, along with more than $20,000 worth of toys. Admission is free and cash donations are accepted. There will be no judging of the vehicles and trophies will not be rewarded. Free hot dogs and beverages will be served and there will be live music and entertainment throughout the day. Connetquot Kicks Away At Cancer Nearly 100 players, coaches and students representing Connetquot High School’s soccer program recently took part in the program’s annual Kicks for Cancer clinic on Oct. 14. Due to the community’s outstanding efforts, Connetquot girls’soccer coach Ryan Cavanagh and his players raised $1,600 this year in the fight against cancer. Future soccer stars in grades kindergarten through eighth grade took part in this third annual fundraising clinic which

included a soccer training session to develop essential soccer skills, such as possession, speed, agility and team tactics. Proceeds from this year’s clinic will be donated to the DEZY Strong Foundation. The organization was started by Matthew “Dezy” DiStefano, a Sachem Central School District assistant volleyball coach and Connetquot resident. Having been diagnosed with cancer, Mr. DiStefano decided to fight the disease and become an inspiration to others

during his inspirational battle. The foundation uses its resources to help families affected by cancer who do not have insurance, and provides programs and experiences to assist with the mental side of the battle against cancer. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates coach Cavanagh, his staff and the dedicated young ladies of the Connetquot soccer program for hosting another successful fundraiser.

Serving Up Her Tennis Dreams The Connetquot Central School District would like to congratulate Connetquot High School student Andrea Brazyte for being named the first female All-State tennis player in Connetquot history. During this year’s athletic season, she finished with an impressive

overall record of 9-1 in league play. Additionally, she played in the Section II League Tournament and was declared the winner in dominant fashion, losing only a total of six games. In the 2019 Section XI Singles Championship tournament, she finished fourth, earning her the title of an All-State Player.

“Andrea has worked very hard to become the player she is today,” said Amy Cohen, girls varsity tennis coach. “She started playing on the varsity team in seventh grade, has improved every year since, and to be able to finish senior year as an All-State player is just incredible.”

PUZZLE ANSWERS: MARCHING BAND SHINES - On Oct. 14, the Connetquot High School Marching Band participated in the annual Columbus Day Parade held in Manhattan, once again proving to the thousands of spectators that they are a group of highly talented musicians. According to Connetquot High School Marching Band Director Gregory Johnson, the band has continuously finished in the top five position of the 20 total bands that compete since 2006. In addition to their participation in the Columbus Day Parade, the band also stunned audiences at the Newsday Marching Band Festival held at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale on Oct. 17. “We are extremely proud of all of the hard work our band students put in every year,” said Mr. Johnson. She is considering furthering her education at either Stony Brook University, the University of Maryland, Penn State or Indiana University, where she will study astronomy and atmospheric science.
