ohn Pearl Elementary School students had the opportunity to work as green engineers with Mrs. Lane at the Maritime Explorium as they created and tested their own racecars. The Maritime Explorium provided students with hands-on, interactive exhibits and activities demonstrating a variety of natural forces. Students used recycled materials to explore the effects of gravity, vector physics and math with angled ramps.

Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School Principal Mr. John Delio, Parent-Teacher Association President Kim Ungro and Garden Club Advisor Justina Rote recently welcomed the Boy Scouts of Suffolk County, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and the local community to the rededication of “Ryan’s Memorial Garden.” During the rededication ceremony parents of deceased student Ryan Ruckdeschel were presented with the finished beautification of Ryan’s Memorial Garden. Ryan Ruckdeschel was a student at Edith L. Slocum Elementary

of Nassau County donated handmade stepping stones to the garden while the Girl Scouts of Nassau County made wind chimes and bird feeders. Parents, teachers and community members donated plants and helped paint baseball murals to honor Ryan’s favorite sport. Now, students can enjoy the beautified garden whenever they pass by the courtyard, and science classes have incorporated it into their curricula on plants, the environment and birds, including filming the recent hatching of baby birds to teach during class.

School who passed away in 1997 after suffering from Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD,) a degenerative genetic disorder. Mrs. Ruckdeschel established Ryan’s Memorial Garden in 1997, but over the years it gradually fell into disrepair. Justina Rote, an Edith L. Slocum Elementary School teacher, applied for a grant of $500 from Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children to restore the garden. The Edith L. Slocum PTA decided to support her efforts with an additional $1,000 and reached out to the community for any donations to help revive the garden. The Boy Scouts
The brisk Fall weather and colorful foliage provided the perfect scenery for Lake Grove’s Annual Harvest Day Festival which took place this past Saturday. With Halloween just around the
corner, the community of Lake Grove ran its yearly seasonal celebration for families and their young “trick or treaters.” Children from all over the community came in costume and enjoyed the
activities the event had to offer. The fair featured a Halloween costume contest, pumpkin carving/ decorating, and apple hunt, hay rides, a petting zoo, refresh0ments, and candy giveaways of course!

All-State Seniors Three seniors have been recognized for exemplary musical excellence and have been selected to perform at the New York State School Music (NYSSMA) AllState Conference held in Rochester, NY from December 3th-6th. Violinist Jenny Fang was selected to perform in the String Orchestra and vocalist Tiana James
will perform in the Mixed Chorus. Violinist Andrew Mok was selected as an alternate for the String Orchestra. The students were selected based on teacher recommendations, literature selections and their scores at the local NYSSMA festival last spring. “Each year, our students are selected to be among the best musicians in
New York State,” said Dr. John J. Gallagher, Longwood’s Director of Fine and Applied Arts. “It is a testament to the sequential, quality music education we provide. Our students are active in various ensembles that provide them with different performance experiences. We could not be more proud.”
BEST IN SHOW - On October 17th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert was honored to be the guest judge at the Brookhaven Free Library’s Scarecrow Contest. The annual event allows families to come together to participate in a fun, family-friendly activity. Mariculture Program On October 23rd, Councilwoman Jane Bonner joined students from Western Suffolk BOCES who participated in the 2015 Shellfish Mariculture Program at Cedar Beach. The program, which is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven, is aimed at
educating students about aquaculture techniques and how to raise seed clams and oysters for planting at public restoration sites. As part of the Shellfish Mariculture Program, the Town provides shellfish rafts, mooring supplies to anchor the rafts and shellfish to stock the rafts.
Students do the work required while being supervised by their teachers and Town of Brookhaven personnel. The Town also provides personnel and machinery to assist in the installation and removal of the rafts and periodic maintenance.

In honor of those who served, the Village of Islandia will have its Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday, November 7th, at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Triangle, located on Old Nichols Road and Johnson Avenue. At the ceremony, Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a Vietnam War veteran, will be joined by members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America chapters and other local organizations. Local U.S. Marine reserve units, along with members of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast
Guard, will be on hand. Representatives from the local fire departments and ambulance services and local elected officials will also be in attendance. There will also be performances by the Central Islip High School marching band. During the ceremony, there will be an invocation and recognition of the local war veterans’ organizations. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of the wreaths in front of the memorial. This year, Mayor Dorman has worked to make the village more welcoming
to its veterans. In May, he helped establish the Col. Francis S. Midura VFW Post #12144 at the Village of Islandia Commons for local veterans to meet. This month, at Village Hall, he also established parking spots reserved only for U.S. veterans. The event is open to the public. It is imperative that those who wish to attend the ceremony arrive as early as possible, as parts of Old Nichols Road will be closed off. Calming the Chaos Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. So they say, anyway. Me, I tend to bottle all the day’s anxiety and frustration inside, carry it over into the next day (or week) and wait for it to eventually, inevitably, explode – usually at someone who has the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seems healthy and productive, no? Enter: Yoga, that deep breathing, spirit cleansing, relaxation technique that so many swear by. Unfortunately, once a week doesn’t quite cut it when the madness engulfs all aspects of life. Best to take
that meditation practice back home with you, to work, sitting in traffic each morning and evening… everywhere. It’s guaranteed to come in handy. It’s amazing how an act so simple that we take for granted can, when given the chance, alleviate much of what ails us during the daily grind. Breathe in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…Breathe out...and repeat as needed. To infinity (and beyond). I would imagine everyone has stress in his/ her life. The difference lies in how each person handles it, or doesn’t, as the case may be. While some thrive on chaos, others shut down at even the slightest roadblock. Any deviation from the agreed-upon plan
is met with panic. There is no going with the flow, only uncertainty, anxiety and, ultimately, aggravation. The best we can all do is focus on the big picture, on those things that are truly important. As another of my favorite quotations states, Frame every socalled disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter? If the answer is no, move on. Treat those obstacles with the level of importance they deserve – minimal. Few things are worth the time and effort we spend stressing over them. Fine advice if you can follow it. I’m still trying. ‘Til then, breath in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…

Music Honor Society MARITIME EXPLORIUM - John Pearl Elementary School students had the opportunity to work as green engineers with Mrs. Lane at the Maritime Explorium as they created and tested their own race cars. The Maritime Explorium provided students with hands-on, interactive exhibits and activities demonstrating a variety of natural forces. Students used recycled materials to explore the effects of gravity, vector physics and math with angled ramps.
