Raising Cancer Awareness

he Connetquot High School girls’ volleyball team recently hosted a productive volleyball clinic to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, all the while helping young Connetquot students improve their volleyball skills. More than 50 students, spanning first through eighth-grade, took part in this event, which the team hopes to run again next year. Thanks to all those who participated in this worthwhile cause.

ELECTION DAY 2016 This presidential campaign is like no other. One candidate is a successful businessman who beat all the odds, plus 16 other Republicans, and became the Republican nominee for President. The other candidate is a lawyer and a lifetime politician, who beat Bernie Sanders and became the first woman Democratic nominee. The tone of this campaign has been quite intense throughout the primaries, the conventions and the three debates. In many ways, the country has never been more divided. You have Republican Donald J. Trump, who wants to “Drain the Swamp” of Washington D.C. and rebuild our country.

You have Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, who wants to continue with the current path we are on of big government being involved in many aspects of our lives. The media distractions have been unbearable, and arguably quite one-sided in most of their coverage. No matter who you support, nobody condones distasteful words spoken or irresponsible and potentially criminal actions taken by either candidate - and I think you know what and who I am talking about in each instance! Putting all this aside, you have a simple choice to make: Trump - who has earned money, power and fame and wants to help our country restabilize and prosper

once again. He wants to cut government waste, repeal and replace the affordable healthcare act, rebuild and properly care for our military, and secure our borders for everyone’s safety. Clinton - who also has money, power and fame, offers us four more years of what we now have; continuing the affordable healthcare act, big government, big government spending and open borders for a global society. So...to anyone who is still undecided, I ask you - How? The two choices you have could not be more different! Don’t allow the onslaught of the mainstream media to confuse you. Trust your GUT, and go out on November 8th and Vote It!

Any high school senior who is a citizen of the United States is eligible to apply. Applicants need not be related to a member of the Elks. College students are not eligible to apply. Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; permanent legal resident status does not qualify. Male and female students compete separately. The 2017 Most Valuable Student scholarship contest is open to any high school senior who is a US Citizen. Applicants will be judged on scholarship, leadership, and financial need. Applications for the 2017 contest will be available online starting September 1st, 2016. The 2017 MVS application deadline is November 30th, 2016 at 11:59 p.m.

This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a flood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms ﬂailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very ﬁrst dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

In honor of those who served, the Village of Islandia will hold its Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday, November 5th, at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Triangle, located on Old Nichols Road and Johnson Avenue. At the ceremony, Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a Vietnam War veteran, will be joined by members of the Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 in Islandia, Marine Corps League of Bay Shore, Vietnam

Veterans of America chapters and other local organizations. Local U.S. Marine reserve units, along with members of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard, will be on hand. Representatives from the local fire departments and ambulance services and local elected officials will also be in attendance. There will also be performances by the Central Islip High School marching band. During the ceremony, there will be an invocation and recognition of the

local war veterans’ organizations. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of the wreaths in front of the memorial. The event is open to the public. Councilman Michael Loguercio recently attended Fire Prevention Day at Ridge Elementary School. The event included fire prevention demonstrations and activities that educated children about fire safety.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

V-Ball Fundraiser

The Connetquot High School girls volleyball team recently hosted a productive volleyball clinic to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, all the while helping young Connetquot students improve their

volleyball skills. More than 50 students spanning first through eighth-grade took part in this event, which the team hopes to run again next year. During the event, the high school players acted as coaches to the younger

students and helped them improve their bump, setting and spiking skills. The program, which raised more than $700 for the cause, was developed by team mom Brooke Cole.

Hitting the Books Pre-kindergarten students in the Middle Country Central School District recently took a field trip to the Middle Country Public Library with their parents to improve literacy and learn their way around

a library. During the visit, the students read a story and made crafts, while their parents received a tutorial focusing on the library’s resources that benefit young children. The

students then registered for their very own library cards so they can take full advantage of the learning opportunities available to them.

Taking a Stand As part of Longwood Middle School’s year-long anti-bullying initiative, fifth and sixth-grade students welcomed back featured speaker Kirk Smalley from Stand for the Silent. Mr. Smalley’s presentation is direct and forceful, personal and heart-wrenching. At only eleven-years-old, his son Ty took his own life after being suspended from school. Ty had retaliated against a bully that had

been harassing him for more than two years. Today, Mr. Smalley travels the country to honor a promise he made on the first Father’s Day after his son’s death; to stop bullying around the world. Since May 2010, Kirk Smalley has visited more than 1,000 schools and presented to more than 1,000,000 children, adults and faculty about the grueling reality of bullying, and saved countless lives. “This presentation

really connects with our students,” said Middle School Principal Dr. Tracy Adams. “I explained to the students that Mr. Smalley is extremely brave to come and share his personal experience about the effects of bullying, and to not only listen with their ears, but to listen with their hearts. Many of our students were extremely moved, and we hope that his message will stay with them for a lifetime.”

The Community Outreach Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) was created to highlight issues that are affecting people of all ages on Long Island. Free workshops have been planned for community members to obtain information from area professionals. Program Administrator Donna Singer said, “We want to support community members to find answers to the questions they have about societal issues such as drug abuse and Alzheimer’s.

Providing a forum for open communication is very important to ESBOCES, that’s why our Adult Education Program has taken the initiative to start the process with collaboration from Long Island professionals.” Drug Abuse on Long Island was the first in a series of workshops offered by ESBOCES. Twenty members of the community attended the three-hour workshop. Michael Spaccarotella, school social worker in the ESBOCES Incarcerated Education Program,

facilitated the presentation along with mental health professionals from South Oaks, Amityville; Seafield House, Westhampton Beach; Hope House, Port Jefferson, and Outreach House, Brentwood. The speakers discussed how heroin is used, the effects of drug abuse, telltale signs, and prevention and treatment. “The ‘war on drugs’ has been going on for 45 years and it’s an epidemic on Long Island. We want to help you find a path for yourself or a loved one,” Spaccarotella said.

BOE Recognition In recognition of New York State School Boards Association’s School Board Recognition Week, Connetquot Central School District students, faculty and administrators recognized and gave thanks to the district’s

board of education during its mid-October meeting. Connetquot High School’s Long Island Voices Choir, led by CHS Choir teacher James Nagle, commenced the planning meeting with a beautiful song as a token of

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) premier event to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer, was held for the first time at Suffolk County Community College’s Eastern Campus in Riverhead on Sunday, October 23rd. The event attracted 3,500 participants and raised thousands for cancer research. In conjunction with the event, Suffolk County Community College and ACS have established the Breast Cancer Survivors and Caregivers Scholarship. “We’re coming together to support women battling breast cancer, to

remember those who’ve lost the battle, and to push for continued advances in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment,” Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said. “We are proud to host this event for the first time on our Eastern Campus, and look forward to a long and successful relationship with the American Cancer Society and the search for a cure. I urge everyone who can to visit our beautiful campus to take part in this important event,” McKay said. “The Suffolk Community College Foundation is celebrating this event and raising awareness of breast

The goal of this comprehensive research project is to improve access to mental health and addictions care for all those who need it. Network adequacy refers to a health insurance carrier’s requirement to provide enrollees with timely access to a sufficient number of providers included in their benefit contract. Project Access will investigate the problem of families gaining timely and affordable mental health and addictions care, identify obstacles to accessing timely care, and disseminate findings to activate change. These activities will be executed

by a variety of prominent stakeholders who have come together to form the Project Access Planning Committee. Together with researchers from the LIUC.W. Post School of Social Work, the Committee will identify the target population for the study and then create two surveys: one for families and one for service providers. The data will be analyzed and a report generated on the findings. The Committee will develop a plan for disseminating the results to the public to increase knowledge as well as to inform advocacy efforts around mental health parity and network adequacy.

event chairs, Bill Baum, Michael Brennan and Jeffery Capazzi, and the generosity of our donors and volunteers at this event means so much to us, as the proceeds of the tournament will directly fund programs that provide hope and healing to at-risk individuals and the families that support them,” explained Executive Director Steve Chassman. “It is because of their efforts that LICADD remains the go-to agency in the midst of this public health epidemic and continues to develop effective and innovative programs to combat addiction.”

Grant Received Last February, students at James E. Allen Jr./ Sr. High School hosted television chef and cookbook author Lidia Bastianich. Last week, she returned the hospitality by welcoming students at Eataly in New York City. The Western Suffolk BOCES students were treated to a VIP tour October 13th of Eataly, an Italian marketplace, restaurant and cooking school owned by Bastianich and her partners. The students saw how mozzarella and dough are made during hands-on

demonstrations and were treated to tasty samples of roast beef and gelato. The tour concluded in the cooking classroom where Bastianich answered enthusiastic and thoughtful questions from the students and offered cooking tips. Each student went home with a goodie bag complete with pasta and sauce. “Our students have not stopped talking about how much they learned on this trip and how much they enjoyed spending time with Lidia,” said Regina

Options for Community Living, Inc. is pleased to announce that they have received a $25,000 grant from the M•A•C AIDS Fund. Options has developed programs that provide housing assistance and long-term rental housing for individuals and families in response to the critical need for affordable housing for persons living with HIV/AIDS on Long Island. Options currently operates 68 units across Long Island that provide safe, affordable housing to Long Islanders who were formerly homeless or inadequately housed.

Options requested program support from the M•A•C AIDS Fund to supplement funding for housing case management services. These services are vital to evaluate home safety; to assist tenants with budgeting and to provide referrals for health services as needed. The mission of the M·A·C AIDS Fund is to serve all people affected by HIV and AIDS. Their goal is: “to partner with the bold, the visionary and the brave who confront the epidemic in countries and communities where people are most neglected, off the radar and at

highest risk. M A C funds innovative programs that deal directly with the most marginalized, stigmatized and under-heard victims.” Yolanda Robano-Gross, executive director, Options for Community Living, Inc., is grateful for the M·A·C AIDS Fund support. “Our housing program has allowed us to keep families together and to ensure that individuals have safe, affordable housing where they can flourish.
