I’m sure you’ve heard that water is good for you, but why is that? What does it do for us? That’s what I want to share with you... Water makes up the majority of our weight. The average adult body is made up of 50%-65% water. Our bodies can’t store this water, so we need to replenish it frequently. Before, when I wasn’t at my healthiest, I didn’t drink water often. I drank iced tea, lots of coffee and other juices. I always said to myself - the beverages I am drinking are made with water, that’s good enough. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I wasn’t giving my body nearly enough fresh, clean water. Now, you might ask yourself - well how much water do I need? Ideally, 64 ounces daily is a good goal. The Art League of Long Island is pleased to announce an art scholarship sponsored by Woodbury-based law firm Salenger, Sack, Kimmel & Bavaro, LLP. The Joseph J. Fenty, Jr. Memorial Scholarship will award two returning combat veterans, currently residing or originally from Long Island, with a formal art education at the Art League’s visual arts center in Dix Hills. As supporters of the men and women serving in the armed forces, Salenger, Sack, Kimmel & Bavaro partners were touched by Art League of Long Island Executive Director - and Gold Star Mom Charlee Miller’s loving remembrance of her son Joe Fenty. As an Airborne Ranger & Commander of 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Lt. Colonel Fenty was a brother and mentor to the soldiers he commanded. On May 5th, 2006, he and nine soldiers were killed while serving in the Kunar province in Afghanistan when a CH47 Chinook helicopter crashed during combat operations. “I am grateful for Salenger, Sack, Kimmel & Bavaro’s gift to our heroes returning from combat, and for honoring the memory of my dear son Joe,” said Miller. In life he was a loving husband of Kristin, his wife of 20 years. Joe

became a dad for the first time in April 2006, never having had the opportunity to hold little Lauren Olivia in his arms. After earning a degree in business management he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant from UNCC Charlotte, and in the ensuing years he earned his masters in education from Troy State University. An elite athlete, he was a marathon-runner, an ultramarathon runner, a crosscountry skier, mountain biker, and kayaker. He also was a proud supporter of the arts and recognized how it nurtured the mind and the soul. Returning combat veterans are invited to apply for the scholarship, two of whom will be selected to receive a scholarship. MAUREEN’S HAVEN!

Maureen’s Haven is a local organization that helps homeless men and women around Long Island. This program brings a variety of organizations and houses of worship together to help meet the needs of the homeless during the cold winter months, which is known as their Emergency Shelter Program, starting on November 1st and running through March 1st.

The host facilities and supporting organizations provide not just a place for the homeless to sleep, but a nutritious dinner, breakfast and a packed meal to go. They provide support by embracing the values of human dignity, respect, service, compassion, teamwork, diversity and love.

In addition to meeting their immediate needs, Maureen’s Haven strives to place individuals in supportive housing, which provides consistent shelter and case management. Over the past three years, Maureen’s Haven has placed over 30 individuals in housing, provided counseling and assistance with job search and placement, and offered

After meeting recently with Maryann, the Executive Director of this wonderfully compassionate organization, and taking a tour of their day center, I came away with a much better understanding of who they are and what they do. The warm sincerity I felt while hearing her speak about the heart of this organization and experiencing what it’s like to be at their day center was quite emotional and aweinspiring. Maureen’s Haven is currently in need of various donations and volunteers. As far as donations, they need the following: latex gloves, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, coffee/tea keurig pods, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and of course monetary donations. They are also in need of people to volunteer their time in the following areas at their day center: assisting in organizing their donation room, building shelves in the donation room, assisting with office work duties and assisting with cleaning up the day center. They also need men to serve as overnight staff to watch over the homeless on Monday nights at Aquebogue’s Our Redeemer Church. The Simple Things As we usher in November, we tend to take stock of the year as a whole - where it stands, those goals we had intended to achieve along the way, and how the two correlate. Life is a constant evaluation in that way. While the month may be centered around the beginning of the holiday season, the concept of Thanksgiving is one that can be applied throughout the year. Perhaps this is why it is one of my least favorite holidays, simply for the fact that it seems short-sighted to designate one particular day to “be thankful.” What about the other 364? It shouldn’t take a turkey dinner and wallto-wall football games to gain that needed perspective. Before the commercialism of the “season of giving” took over, it was simply an opportunity to spend time

with family and friends, to gather over food and reminisce, and to make new memories along the way. Looking through old photo albums, the one thing that resonates through the years is the sense of togetherness that always existed; so strong you can practically see it reverberating off the pages. This is a feeling that one can only hope to recapture with each passing year. All the shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, the decorating, the wrapping… what is it for, if not that moment when everyone comes together to enjoy one another’s company. It’s the little things that matter - a special greeting card with a thoughtful inscription, remembering someone’s favorite type of dessert, a lovingly wrapped gift topped with a beautiful bow. The rest, as they say, is

merely window dressing. While the year may be drawing to a close, there is still plenty of time to refocus on those goals we may have allowed to slip through the cracks. Days and months and years are but markers of time; the moment itself is what matters. The only deadlines we should pay mind to are those we set for ourselves. The plan is always evolving, and so, too, must we. Don’t think of it as two months left to achieve a particular task; or two months left until the clock resets and we can put 2017 behind us for good - neither approach serves us today, now. County Mobile App Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, working in conjunction with County Executive Steve Bellone unveiled a new mobile app today that will provide access to drug addiction services for those needing assistance. The app, Stay Alive L.I. is currently available in Android format and will soon be available in Apple format. It provides information on how to recognize and prevent opioid overdoses, where to get help with drug addiction services, the locations of hospitals and treatment centers, links to organizations and

hotlines, and information on training to administer Narcan medication for overdoses. “With a growing number of overdoses in Suffolk County we have been vigilant with instituting creative solutions for dealing with this epidemic. This app is just one weapon in the fight,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Too many lives have been lost and as new, deadlier drugs infiltrate our communities, the number of deaths will continue to rise unless we have the resources to provide assistance. This app will put vital information for treatment and recovery into the

hands of those suffering drug addiction as well as their family members and will hopefully result in more lives saved.” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said, “We are fighting back against the opioid epidemic with more enforcement, better treatment, and new technology in the palm of your hand. This mobile app developed by Suffolk County will inform more residents through a new medium of vital treatment and information available for those suffering with addiction. I thank Presiding Officer Gregory and the County Legislature for their outspokenness,

steady leadership and willingness to be true partners on this issue.” According to the Public Health Emergency Preparedness division within the Suffolk County Department of Health, from January 1 through August 31 of this year there was a total of 588 overdose reversals of which 152 received more than one dose of Narcan. Of the 588, 25 patients were reversed at least two times within that time period, representing a snapshot of the number of overdoses in the county. Legislator William “Doc” Spencer, Chair of the Health Committee said,

“I commend our team especially our Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory for his leadership in encouraging this lifesaving application. We must continue to provide resources to fight this devastating menace of drug addiction that is ravaging our communities.” “The app is a new tool in our arsenal to fight the war on drugs,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. “The app incorporates resources for enforcement, education, and prevention in order to help mitigate drug use in our communities. It will be an invaluable resource to help individuals struggling and also families and

friends who are helping a loved one battle addiction.” “Each of us has heard and seen the horrific stories of death and destruction that comes from opioid addiction. The more information we can provide to the people, the quicker we can provide it and the more comprehensive that information is the better chance we have of saving lives,” said Legislator Tom Cilmi. Are You Prepared to Cast Your Ballot on Election Day? Polls in Suffolk County are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day, November 7th. Many voters are unprepared when they arrive at the polls, unaware of what offices are on the ballot, what each candidate stands for, and unfamiliar with state or local propositions on the back of the ballot. Yes, the ballot is frequently confusing and the print can be quite small (NYS election law requires a one-page ballot; lobby your state Senator and Assembly member if you think this merits review). The old lever machines are gone - there was no way to verify whether they were accurately recording each vote - and, for the past few years, voters have been using optical scanners, which are verifiable via a paper trail. The Suffolk County ballot will include candidates for judges, district attorney and sheriff. All 18 Suffolk County Legislature seats are on the ballot as well. Locally, there are elections for various town offices. Do your research and come to the polls prepared. Watch for news of candidate forums in your community and articles in your local newspaper or visit www.Vote411.org. The League of Women Voters of New York State has published a Voter Guide Part II: Ballot Proposals, which may help you evaluate the three proposals that will be on the November 2017 ballot. To help you, the three proposals are summarized below: The ﬁrst proposal: “Shall there be a convention to revise the Constitution and amend the same?” is offered by law every 20 years to the electorate. If the vote is negative, there will be no convention. If the majority vote yes, there will be a convention in 2019 to consider amendments to the New York State Constitution. In November 2018, delegates will be elected by the voters - three from each state senatorial district and 15 at large. The amendments that are adopted by a majority of the delegates will be submitted to the voters for their approval at least six weeks after the convention adjourns. Proponents of the convention hope that it will affect election voting and ethics reform, changes that have been proposed to the legislature but never passed. Other areas for improvement are judicial reform, environmental issues, and health care and women’s issues. Opponents of the proposal are concerned that it may lead to a complete overhaul of the state constitution, removing or revising protections of state pensions and collective bargaining, the Adirondack Forest Preserve and school funding. The second proposal: “Allowing the complete or partial forfeiture of a public officer’s pension if he or she is convicted of a certain type of felony” would allow a court to reduce or revoke the pension of a public officer who is convicted of a felony that has a direct and actual relationship to the performance of the officer’s duties. In reaching this determination, the court must consider

the seriousness of the crime and whether the forfeiture would result in undue hardship to dependent children. If approved, the amendment will apply only to crimes committed on or after January 1st, 2018, because the New York Constitution now provides that the benefits of a public pension or retirement system cannot be reduced or impaired. The third proposal: “Authorizing the use of forest preserve land for specific purposes” would create a land account with up to 250 acres for use by towns, villages and counties that have no viable alternative to using forest preserve land to address specific public health and safety concerns. Another 250 acres will be added to the forest preserve as a substitute for the land removed. The proposed article would allow counties and townships of certain regions to conduct repairs on road and bridges and allow for the installation of new bike paths, broadband internet and water well infrastructure. Although the Adirondack Forest Preserve is protected by the “Forever Wild” clause of the constitution, local governments, elected officials and the NYS DEC all support this amendment, feeling it is necessary for the safety of residents and to ensure that quality of life is maintained. In recognition of their achievements, Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School recently inducted 53 new members into the building’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The ceremony, which was coordinated by adviser Aimee Padavan, began with

members lighting candles representing scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship and service. In order to be considered for a National Junior Honor Society membership, students must maintain an 85 average or above, make voluntary contributions to the school or community and showcase superior

leadership skills. “We are very proud to recognize these outstanding members of the Ronkonkoma Middle School student body,” said Ms. Padavan. A reception honoring the inductees and their proud families was held in the cafeteria following the ceremony.

Connecting to Tech Students across all grade levels at Lynwood Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District experienced various new technologies within their makerspace room as librarians from the Sachem Public Library led an interactive showcase. Throughout the week, Lynwood students explored technologies such as remote control mechanical arms; Osmos, an iPad attachment and app that allows students to bring drawings from the

tablet to paper; and Mbots, programmable remotecontrolled vehicles with a coding component. Along with new technologies, students were also challenged with more familiar objects. At one station, students were supplied with clothespins, popsicle sticks and alligator clips, and tasked with constructing a weight-bearing structure. An assortment of Legos was supplied at another station and students were challenged to build

functioning cars or replica homes. Finally, common hand tools were incorporated to test the students’ problem-solving skills as they collaborated to remove various nuts, bolts and screws from a pegboard. In its inaugural year, teachers will utilize the Lynwood Elementary makerspace room to conduct educationally enriching and engaging activities.

Sachem Central School District’s Waverly Avenue Elementary students in Cathy Juliano’s fourthgrade class participated in a Halloween-themed STEAM activity that challenged their creative design skills by calling for the construction of miniature haunted houses. To begin the project,

students drafted unique design ideas, keeping in mind the structural integrity of their buildings. Following the design process, they turned their ideas into reality utilizing popsicle sticks and glue. Throughout the construction process, students employed problem-

solving techniques by incorporating the objects around them to act as braces, allowing the glue to set and the structures to strengthen. Following construction, students decorated their houses with paint and Halloween-themed cutouts.

Students Teaching Students Students from Sachem High Schools North and East came together for a day of training as part of the Teens as Teachers Substance Abuse Prevention and Education Program club and course. The program, which included multiple guest speakers from across Suffolk County, featured interactive activities designed to strengthen students’ skills as peer educators as they work collectively as community liaisons, educating youth and promoting a safe and healthy lifestyle. The peer educators within the program facilitate lessons to sixth-

grade students around the district on how to resist pressures to use drugs and alcohol. The skillsbased health education program is designed to mitigate risk factors and build the basis for a safe, supportive and respectful learning environment. The Too Good for Drugs curriculum is used to put social and emotional learning to work through fun and interactive lessons, building the selfconfidence young people need to make healthy choices and achieve success. The training program organized by Sachem Health Education

Department educators Patricia Broderick, Lori Hewlett and Kristen Maccarone began with a brief presentation from Sachem substance abuse and violence prevention counselors. Then the students transitioned into an inspirational presentation given by Kym Laube, executive director of HUGS Inc., about the importance of leadership. Following the guest speakers, students separated into groups and practiced presenting the lessons they will be delivering to the district’s sixth-grade students in the coming months.

care packages to service members far from home. The library collected small snacks, toiletries, puzzle books, DVDs and more to let soldiers abroad know they are not forgotten. Children decorated notebooks and wrote letters of encouragement to support both soldiers and veterans. Teen Librarian Angela Breslin, with the help of members of the Teen Advisory Board and Boy Scout Troop 272, under the leadership of Scoutmaster DellaSalle, collected donations, worked with younger patrons and packed boxes. The library completed 45 boxes for our troops. Angela and the library acknowledged the hard work and commitment of these young volunteers in

making the day a true act of giving. The library would also like to thank the staff and all the community members who supported this mission with their donations and good will. Children’s Librarian Jackie DiLorenzo dropped off the donations to Boots on the Ground NY where President, Frank Bania and his dedicated crew will process and mail the packages. Author John Lubbock said “We may sit in our library and yet be in all quarters of the earth.” The library and community sends each and every service member, along with their families, its thanks and gratitude for all you do and hope that we have reached you in every corner of the world.

In recent years, the term STEM, referring to the application of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math concepts, has grown increasingly popular in academic circles. But did you know that our own Adventureland amusement park hosts one of the oldest and best STEM events in the nation? Orchestrated by the Long Island Technology & Engineering Education Association (LITEEA) since 2001, ‘Technology Day’ is attended by more than 2,200 middle school students from public, private and Catholic schools. Split into two days to accommodate the crowd, the STEM event, which began in 2001, returned to Long Island’s favorite amusement park, Adventureland, this past week for a mix of fun and work. The event, attended by students from 40 schools, 34 of them Catholic, is an outdoor classroom where students get to ride the rides but then have to complete

a workbook with lab activities that connect the concepts they are learning in school to the mechanics, design, operation and/or ergonomics of the rides at the park. This enables students to apply concepts learned in school to real life. “Our goal has always been to keep the middle school students in our schools on the leading edge of technology and science.” Said Emily Guarnieri, Director of Educational Technology for the Department of Education from the Diocese of Rockville Centre. “This event uses the amusement park rides to illustrate the practical application of many complex concepts that our students are introduced to in class,” said Guarnieri. Introduced in 2001 by Joe Fili, a retired teacher and an officer of the LITEEA, the event has come into its own in recent years as the concept of STEM education has taken hold. “The teachers whose classes participate

come to a workshop the week before the event where they are introduced to 13 teaching concepts that are illustrated by the rides,” stated Joe Fili, one of the founders of Technology Day. “They choose the 4 or 5 rides that best align with their classroom curriculum and create a customized workbook that their students complete during the day.” Fili continued, “It is quite an unusual sight to see and hear the squeals of delight of the students on the rides as you are standing in the middle of groups of students working to complete their workbooks,” continued Fili. As the park cleared out from another successful Technology Day, Joe Fili and Emily Guarnieri have already begun the discussion on what new concepts could be added for next year to continue to highlight the intersection of educational concepts and practical, real-world applications.

Students in Michael Lundstrom’s technology class at Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District used innovative thinking as they faced design challenges in creating marble mazes, racing the clock to reach a designated goal time of eight seconds. Seventh-grade students in Mr. Lundstrom’s technology class focused on the engineering design process as they embarked

on the challenges of navigating a marble through a maze, meeting the time constraints allowed. Supplied with cardboard from cereal boxes, students assembled the mazes, weaving the marble throughout their creations to reach its destination. The only factor aiding the marble in its descent was gravity. During the project, the students learned a number of lessons beyond the

engineering skill acquired. These included the concept of design ethics and the importance of attributing credit for components found in others’ designs while conducting research. Additionally, self-refection was emphasized during the testing phase, which required students to recognize design failures and the need to create functional solutions that successfully completed their goals.

The Middle Country Central School District recently recognized its October Students of the Month at a Board of Education Meeting. Centereach High School senior Hanna Hudson, Newfield High School senior Sydney Taub, Dawnwood Middle School eighth grade student Grace Miller and Selden Middle School eighth grade student Austin Pelissier were all recognized for their success inside and outside of the classroom. “The District is incredibly proud to honor these four high-achieving students as they continue to thrive academically and serve as role models for their peers,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “The fall is always an exciting time with students returning to their studies and getting involved in the Middle Country community. As she has challenged herself more, her grades have continued to improve—a testament to her determination and work ethic. Hanna has also flourished outside the classroom. She currently serves as Senior Class President, was just voted by her peers as Homecoming Queen and excels in softball and basketball. Next fall, Hanna will be pursuing a degree in early childhood education and a minor in special education. As a senior at Newfield High School, Sydney Taub has the potential to graduate in June with approximately 40 college credits. This year alone, Sydney is enrolled in six Advanced Placement courses and a college class. Newfield teachers often describe Sydney as a wellrounded student who not only excels academically but has become an active member of the Middle Country community. She is the resident of the National Honor Society, vice president of the school newspaper, treasurer of

the Glamor Gals Club and a member of the Mock Trial Team. Sydney will be pursuing a degree in political science next fall. Dawnwood Middle School eighth student - and September student of the month - Grace Miller was selected for her work ethic and continued academic success. Grace has maintained high honor roll since the first quarter of sixth grade. Her achievements in the classroom are matched by her musical talents. Grace has played leading roles in Dawnwood musicals, plays the guitar at local events, and writes and records her own songs. Austin Pelissier, an eighth grade student at Selden Middle School and aspiring environmental engineer, was recognized as the school’s September student of the month. Austin has remained on the high honor roll since the beginning of middle school—earning a 97.15 GPA. He continues to make positive contribution at Selden Middle School as a member of National Junior Honor Society, the school’s literary magazine and the Youth for Humanity club.

Night of Achievements Connetquot Central School District Board of Education celebrated a vast number of student accomplishments at its meeting on October 17th. To begin the night’s celebrations, students ranging in all grade levels were rewarded with tokens of appreciation for taking part in this past summer’s “Catch-A-Reader/Writer” initiative. These students were caught enjoying their love for reading and writing in locations throughout summer vacation and had their pictures taken while engaged in the activity. The initiative was one that showcased reading and writing as universal activities that extend well beyond the school day or school year. A number of Connetquot High School students were in attendance to receive awards for scoring a 100 on their respective Regents exams, thus joining Dr. Adams “Superintendent’s 100 Club.” Some of the subjects the students mastered were English language arts, U.S. History and Living Environment. Sophomore Adam

Moussa was honored for earning the Award of Excellence as presented by the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists after attending the Congress of Future Science Technology Leaders held this past June in Boston, Massachusetts. In order to be accepted into the program, students must possess a minimum GPA of 3.5 or equivalent, and be recommended by their teacher or guidance counselor for leadership ability, academic achievement and dedication to science and technology. District students in grades sixth through ninth, who took part in the Suffolk County Battle of the Books competition held at the Student Activities Center at Stony Brook University, were presented with tokens of appreciation for their hard work and determination. These students were expected to read eight pre-chosen books and attend meetings throughout the summer as part of the program. Connetquot High School student Jacob DeRosa was

celebrated for being named a Commended Student by in the National Merit Scholarship Program. This award is in recognition of a students’ exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for National Merit Scholarship Program entry. Lastly, in celebration of Board of Education Appreciation Week, Connetquot High School’s Long Island Voices performed a stunning rendition of “True Colors,” with accompaniment of teacher Jim Nagle on guitar. The Long Island Voices are comprised of a talented group of student-musicians who continuously captivate their audiences with beautiful harmonies and soaring melodies. Prior to their performance, the board was presented with beautiful bouquets of flowers and intricate pieces of ceramics courtesy of Dave Pascarella’s sculpting and ceramics class.

Gang Conference a Success Hundreds of law enforcement experts gathered at the Radisson Hotel in Hauppauge on Thursday, October 19th for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Annual Gang Intelligence Seminar. The event, which is in its 11th year, was started by Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco in 2006, and is recognized as one of the nation’s foremost events for gang-related information sharing and education. It is cosponsored in conjunction with the Middle AtlanticGreat Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network. Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco, who is also the Chair of Suffolk County’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, has made partnering with federal, state and local law

Gang Information Center, provided the attendees with a detailed overview of the impact of the federal Unaccompanied Alien Children program in local communities, how it must be reformed, and how it has correlated with an increase in MS-13 gang activity. Sheriff DeMarco called the ongoing success of the annual seminar an important achievement of his Administration. He stated, “For the past 11 years, we have seen this annual event grow from a small group of law enforcement professionals to a diverse cross-section of federal, state and local police and community partners working together to share intelligence and information in our fight against gang proliferation in the United States and worldwide.”
