says dark chocolate can be kept for one to two years if wrapped in foil and stored in a cool, dark and dry place, such as a pantry. Milk and white chocolate have a more limited storage time of no more than eight to 10 months. Hershey’s does not recommend putting chocolate in the refrigerator, as doing so can affect texture. 3. Candy corn can endure. This symbol of the season is a durable treat. If left in the original and unopened packaging, candy corn can last a few years. The manufacturer of Smarties says that its candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the conditions for storing the candies, the better. 4. Keep original packaging. The wrappers used to house the candy were designed to keep it fresh. Candy that has been exposed to the elements will degrade faster. When original packaging is unavailable, glass or plastic containers with airtight lids can keep Halloween candy fresher, longer. 5. Manage moisture. Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections. Halloween is a favorite day for many children and even a number of adults. Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy. Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-ortreaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn and taffy to manage. Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone. 1. Go nutty first. Nuts and oils will not last as long as some other candy ingredients. Consume candy that is full of nuts first. You can try freezing candy containing nuts, but there is no guarantee the texture will remain the same upon thawing. 2. Keep an eye on chocolate. Chocolate needs to be kept under cool conditions to prolong its shelf life. The National Confectioners Association

Weekly Farmers Market Extended The weekly Farmers Market that takes place every Thursday afternoon in the lobby at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville has been such a big success this summer and fall, it will be extended for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays on Tuesday, November 26 and Monday, December 23. The new dates will make fresh produce, flowers, spirits, baked goods, jams, pickles and fresh homemade pasta, all conveniently available before these two holidays. Pre-orders for baked goods and other

fresh produce can be placed with Bakewicz Farms at the Brookhaven Town Farmers Market on Thursdays until October 31, or by calling the farm directly at 631-849-1120. Sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven and the Long Island Farm Bureau, this weekly NYS Agriculture & Markets sanctioned Farmers Market was established in 2018 by the Town of Brookhaven’s Agriculture Advisory Committee to encourage residents to buy Long Island fruits and vegetables and bring attention to

the Town’s many farms and produce grown right in our own backyard. In addition to selling fresh produce, the market also features wine, spirits, flowers, seafood and other Long Island harvests. The weekly Farmers Market in the lobby at Town Hall is currently open every Thursday from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm and will run until October 31; the Market will then return on Tuesday, November 26 and Monday, December 23, also from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

FIRE PREVENTION OPEN HOUSE - On October 11, Supervisor Ed Romaine (left) and ex-Chief and Fire Prevention Chairman, John A. Masem (right) joined hundreds of residents who attended the 11th Annual Fire Prevention Open House Family Night at the Medford Fire Department headquarters. The event featured informative and fun activities for the entire family aimed at saving lives in the event of a fire emergency. These included Drills at Night (DAN) in the department’s Fire Prevention Trailer, fire extinguisher making, free child i.d. cards courtesy of New York Life and demonstrations by the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services, Suffolk County Police Department and Sheriff’s office. Supervisor Romaine said, “I thank the Medford Fire Department for putting on this event every year. Fire Prevention education and training for families is so important. The things they learn could one day save the life of a loved one.”

Urgent Call For Donors New York’s blood supply has never been lower, and New York Blood Center (NYBC) is urgently calling for donors. There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a sevenday inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now, reserves are below that

minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for blood.

We’re hoping that you will share this urgent message to encourage folks to come out to donate. That little extra action can make the difference in the lives of the patients we fight for together. Thank you for anything that you can do to help rebuild our inventory in order to serve patients in our local hospitals!

STUDENTS BECOME ONE WITH NATURE - Students of all grade levels from Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently enhanced their knowledge of the world’s rainforests and its inhabitants during a visit from Barb Whittamore of the Wildlife Encounters, a Wildlife Education Program in Nebraska. During Ms. Whittamore’s visit, she shed light onto the multiple layers of the South American rainforests which include the forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent layers. Student-volunteers were given the opportunity to interact with creatures such as “Jedi” the Blue-Tongued Skink, “Axel” the Red-Footed Tortoise and “Zeus” the Argentine Black and White Tegu. In an effort to increase their understanding of essential fire-safety practices, students in third through fifth grade from Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently traveled to the

Lakeland Fire Department. During their visit, the students engaged in multiple interactive stations which were operated by trained firefighters and professionals. The stations included a walkthrough

of the “smokehouse” simulator, a guided tour of a real fire engine and its many components, along with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the interior functions of an ambulance and other emergency vehicles.

Promise, Start With Hello is led by family members who lost loved ones at the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012. Throughout the week, students took part in meaningful activities that empowered them to create a culture of connectedness within their school walls and the broader community. Pledge, participated in the “Kindness” and “Find Someone Who” games, wore name tags, participated in Random Acts of Kindness and Helping Hands, and ate lunch with new friends! The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares. This year they are bringing the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Each event has been going great, with up to hundreds of guests each night! The remaining events will run on October 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. On Halloween, their event will be kid-friendly! There will be no actors and walk through tours of their haunted house will be given. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, nonmedical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. Recognizing Gold Star Families Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recently attended the Gold Star Families Recognition Ceremony at Bartlett Pond Park in Middle Island. The service included songs, prayers, readings, and remarks by the community and local leaders. “I commend the Longwood community for its commitment to memorializing our fallen heroes and recognizing

the sacrifices of their families,” said Legislator Anker. “Thank you to the Longwood Alliance and the Middle Island Civic Association for organizing this commemorative event every year.” The United States began observing Gold Star Mother’s Day on the last Sunday in September in 1936. Today, the nation recognizes the sacrifice that all Gold Star Family

members make when a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, or other loved one dies in service to the nation.
