Brown is best known for making sculpture that portrays her personal story as a naturalist, inspired by the beauties and tragedies of wildlife and American history. Her artwork focuses on anthropological and environmental concerns of extinction and the human condition in reference to the natural world. She has exhibited her large-scale public works throughout the Northeast from Maine and Vermont to Virginia and Tennessee and exhibits her smaller sculptures in galleries across New York State and Long Island. NYC artist Kathy Levine makes art about the importance of the natural environment to our well-being. The pieces are handmade from recycled paper cast over natural objects like trees, bark, leaves, branches and other forms found in nature. Their mission is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICH runs a local Boutique that gives people in need a chance to come and pick out clothes and other essential items, all for free. With the help of generous people, they collect items year-round for people experiencing homelessness.

Valuable Assets In other cases, a diverse background can be an advantage. “Integrating into Jamaican culture was easy due to the many similarities with my Mexican culture,” says Maria Elena Venegas Banulelos, a Spanish speaking, MexicanAmerican Peace Corps volunteer who served in Jamaica. “For instance, both Mexicans and Jamaicans are very religious, we enjoy a little spice in our food, and like to dress our best when in public. Both cultures love soccer, dancing and loud music. Also, the environments are similar in the structure of the homes and agricultural products, and both are home to the most humble people.” This sentiment is shared by other volunteers as well. “My color and my accent have not affected my volunteer work negatively,

instead this has allowed me to integrate well in my community, and people even call me ‘African,’” says Aboubakar Bodi, who was born in Togo and served in Jamaica. Bringing Skills Home Peace Corps service can be an emotionally rewarding experience and an effective way to develop the skills needed to make a difference in one’s community back home. It can also be a key stepping stone in one’s career. Volunteers serve for 27 months in education, health, agriculture and other sectors, and upon their return, they are able to usher innovative solutions to collective problems in U.S. communities. “I am very proud of having taught CPR and first aid to people in different villages in the Kyrgyz language. Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa recently hosted a “Rally for Freedom” event in Selden to support the essential workers in healthcare, education and other professions who are at risk of losing their jobs for choosing not to be vaccinated against Covid-19. Over 250 people were in attendance, and testimony was given by teachers, nurses, first responders, elected officials including NYS Senator Mario Mattera, NYS Assembly members Doug Smith, Jodi Giglio and Joe DeStefano, along with those who lost loved ones from Covid-19. The goal was to implore Governor Hochul to listen to our communities and try to find some middle

ground so that people don’t lose their jobs as a result of these restrictive mandates. “New Yorkers, particularly those in Suffolk County and within my district, have worked hard to keep us safe during Covid by risking their lives and putting their families second for those who needed them,” explained Legislator Caracappa. “Now, they feel deserted and desperate to have a voice. I want them to know that I am here to listen and stand with them against these irresponsible, unjustified and unwarranted mandates. They rallied for us when we were in need. Now we must rally for them!” “Some local media outlets announced the event as an “anti-vaccine”

Three months and six food drives yielded 10,106 pounds of food and supplies, plus nearly $2,200 in cash donations, and online donations totaling more than $4,000. Representatives from Island Harvest Food Bank, small business owners, community volunteers and Girl Scouts who contributed to the initiative, the company announced the results of its Power to Feed Long Island initiative at the food bank’s Melville warehouse. “We are proud that our community came out to support each other and fight hunger through our Power to Feed Long Island food drives,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO of PSEG Long Island, and Island Harvest Food Bank board member. “We set a lofty goal in July, and Long Islanders showed up in force with shopping carts and trunks full of food and supplies to meet the challenge. We crushed our goal because helping each other is something Long Islanders do, and it’s something our employees do. We’re glad we were able

to create the venue to make it happen.” “We are incredibly grateful to PSEG Long Island for their longstanding commitment to addressing the issue of hunger and food insecurity on Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest Food Bank. “Thanks to their concern and generosity and the success of the Power to Feed Long Island initiative, countless Long Islanders struggling to feed their families will be able to rest easier knowing that they will have access to something as basic as food.” Power to Feed Long Island was created to restock the shelves at Island Harvest to enable the nonprofit to provide community members in need with nutritious food, personal care items, baby essentials and pet supplies. Food drive events were held at six supermarkets ─ King Kullen in Garden City Park/New Hyde Park and Shirley; Stew Leonard’s in East Meadow; and Stop & Shop in Huntington Station, Islandia and Massapequa ─ from July through September, when vacations cause a decrease in donations, and collection drives are not top of mind. It is also a time when children out of school are not receiving daily free or

reduced-cost breakfast and lunch, which puts a heavier burden on their families. “Stop & Shop is proud to continue its committed support of the efforts of Island Harvest to address food insecurity across Nassau and Suffolk counties,” said Stefanie Shuman, community relations manager, Stop & Shop. “Power to Feed Long Island allowed our customers to take part in food drives held at Stop & Shop stores and help their neighbors in need. It’s important that we all come together during these very difficult times,” she added. Along with the economic hardships caused by the pandemic, there is a significant strain on the supplemental food supply chain. The collection drives continued through September, Hunger Action Month. More than a dozen PSEG Long Island employees participated in the food drives as Power to Feed Long Island ambassadors. Connetquot Boys’ Soccer Program Celebrates Its Graduating Seniors

On October 13th, Connetquot High School boys’ varsity soccer coach John Zambriski took time before the team’s scheduled game with visiting Newfield to recognize his graduating seniors. Surrounded by teammates, family and friends, the seniors listened as coach Zambriski reviewed their achievements, and thanked them for their dedication and leadership. The graduating seniors were presented with gifts, and showered with praise for their support of

Connetquot boys’ soccer. Following the senior ceremonies, the Connetquot T-birds used their enthusiasm to outplay the visitors, turning a 2-1 halftime lead into a 3-1 win. Connetquot improves to an overall 8-51 record in a challenging Suffolk League II. Brothers Andrew and Kevin Johnson along with Dylan Zampaglione scored one goal apiece for the T-birds Goalie Tyler Moore was credited with six saves for Connetquot. Congratulations to the

winning boys’ varsity soccer team, and a sincere ‘thank you’ to the following graduating seniors for their dedication and leadership: Daniel Bamfo, Anthony Chimbay, Kevin Johnson, Robert LoBosco, Aidan Mallon, Patrick O’Shea, Brandon Ribeiro, and Dylan Zampaglione. Oktoberfest Celebrations The style of beer most widely consumed during Oktoberfest celebrations can be traced to a time before refrigeration was available. According to the online beer resource BeerAdvocate.com, brewing beer in the summertime was nearly impossible in the days before refrigeration. Hot weather and the risk of bacterial infections complicated brewing in summer, so many brewers

Zeldin Joins Supervisor Aguiar, Local United’ To And From Covid-19 Officials And Residents At Demolition Of Vaccine Appointments Two Buildings In Downtown Riverhead United Way of Long Island recently launched ‘Ride United’ to help local residents access transportation to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the rideshare service Lyft. The program is part of United Way Worldwide’s Ride United Vaccine Access Campaign, which addresses unmet transportation needs for individuals and families. Long Island residents participating in ‘Ride United’ receive 2 free Lyft rides (up to $25 each way) to and from vaccination appointments located in Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Riders must download the Lyft app on a supported device and have an active Lyft account. “United Way of Long Island is committed to keeping our communities safe and healthy. Ride United removes barriers of transportation inequity, ensuring that any Long Islander seeking to get vaccinated can get to and from their appointment without cost,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. Ride United expands upon the organization’s COVID-19 response efforts. United Way of Long Island has helped seniors, veterans and families receive emergency financial assistance, fresh groceries, PPE items and HEPA air purifiers to improve their health, well-being and financial security during the pandemic.
