This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect

of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in

other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

participants, who also had a chance to take pictures with a real-life pirate and princess. “The Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt was the perfect way to end our 2016 season,” says Melinda Novak, CoOwner/Vice President, Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “The weather was perfect, despite the rainy weekend, and all of the families seemed to have a lot of fun. We’re looking forward to hosting the event again next Fall, and we’re excited to reopen in the Spring with more fun events.” The Long Island Game Farm features interactive animal experiences, where guests can get up-close and personal with their favorite animals. New to the Game Farm this year was the Camel Encounter, where guests hand-fed the camels and learned fun facts from the staff. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together. FAMILY PAINT NIGHT - On Friday, October 14th, parents enjoyed an evening out with their children at the Connetquot Public Library. Painting a special 9x12 canvas picture, children from kindergarten through 5th grade and their parents had the opportunity to share their artistic talents during this family program. High Honor As a result of a thorough application process, 24 Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School students were recently inducted into the school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society. Tri-M recognizes both middle and high school music students on their outstanding academic accomplishments, with

focus on community and school service. According to the organization’s website, applicants must be enrolled in at least one music class, have a 2.0 GPA in their core classes, a 3.0 in their music classes and be of strong character. With the addition of the new inductees, the school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society

Taking High Honors now boasts a total of 52 student members. Each year, the members work under the leadership of adviser Melissa Johnson to contribute countless hours of services to the school and local community while raising funds for a variety of causes.

Two West Middle Island Elementary School students have been named New York State winners in the 2016 #STOP ON RED! New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) Poster Contest. Third grade student Hunter Koeppen took first place for Division #1 (grades K-2) and second grade student Michael Privitera won third place

for Division #4 (special needs). In recognition of their achievement, both students received a monetary prize. As a first place winner, Hunter’s poster will be submitted to the NYAPT for judging at the national level. The national winner’s poster will be used to promote National School Bus Safety Week in 2017. Entries are

judged on safety impact, originality, artistic quality and visual impact. The National School Bus Safety Poster Contest is sponsored each year by the National Association for Pupil Transportation, the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services and the National School Transportation Association.

The Leader in Me Edward J. Bosti Elementary School faculty and staff in the Connetquot School District recently met to brainstorm ideas about how to make every student a leader. Introduced by Bosti Principal Dr. Gail Cholden in 2015, the “Leader in Me” program teaches 21stcentury leadership skills to students, creating a culture

of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. “Our participating teachers synergize on a regular basis to develop ideas on how to make every child a leader,” said Dr. Cholden. “The ‘Leader in Me’ promotes growth, self-efficacy, self-awareness, positive thinking, character, trust,

relationships, empathy, cooperation, goal setting, listening, motivation and talent.” The program, developed by Franklin Covey, is now being implemented in more than 2,000 schools worldwide. Participating schools are consistently reporting increases in all of the positive aspects the program promotes.

Affecting Change Students at Ronkonkoma Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently visited by the multi-talented singer/ songwriter Jared Campbell for a presentation about making the most out of life. Dressed in blue shirts symbolizing their commitment to respecting one another, the students were enthralled with Mr. Campbell’s ability to mix

comedy and songs while stressing the overall message of keeping the Connetquot community bully-free. His original tunes such as “When I Was a Kid” and “Change the World” provided stories of hope, and students paid careful attention to the inspiring lyrics as Mr. Campbell performed. Additionally, members of the school’s Dignity or All Students Act Committee, including guidance

counselor Christine Valente and Principal Charles Morea, were in attendance to spread the message that all humans should be treated with dignity and respect. The DASA law was mandated by New York State on July 1st, 2012 and protects students from harassment, discrimination and bullying by other students or school employees.

On October 18th, the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council (BBAC) hosted its 12th annual “Building Business In Brookhaven Expo” at Town Hall and broke all previous records for participating vendors and attendees. The event, which attracted over 500 local business people and 130 vendors, focused on business networking and included a trade show with booths highlighting

local, regional and national companies that service businesses in Brookhaven Town. The expo was presented by the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council in partnership with the Town of Brookhaven, Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency and the Brookhaven Chambers of Commerce Coalition (BCCC). Golf Classic a Success Bright sunshine matched the spirit and generosity of golf enthusiasts and sponsors, enabling the Friends of Mercy Medical Center to raise $125,000 at their 35th annual Golf Classic. The September 15th event included a morning and afternoon shotgun, with 250 golfers coming together at the Garden City Country Club and Hempstead Golf and Country Club to support the Rockville Centre hospital. Due to the initial successful response, the

first course was completely reserved within just nine days, and so the second course was added. Many thanks to all who participated! PUZZLE ANSWERS: Members of the public and the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) walked the Sunken Meadow State Park boardwalk on Thursday, October 6th to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity in maintaining physical and mental health. The walk coincided with Mental Health Awareness Week. With the regional

theme of being able to “Shine a Light” on mental health/substance abuse treatment and prevention, the LIHC called the event the Light the Path Walk. There is compelling research that physical activity improves mood and it has been shown to decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety. “We know that one
