The Connetquot Central School District and Board of Education proudly recognized three heroic staff members for saving the lives of two students during the Oct. 11 Board of Education meeting. On Sept. 22, an Edward J. Bosti Elementary kindergarten student choked on a chicken nugget brought from home during lunch time. The student’s 1:1 aide, Lori Stellwagen,

and general education aide, Amy Loretta, sprang into action. They administered abdominal thrusts to dislodge the nugget from the child’s throat. On Sept. 27, a fifth grade student at Sycamore Avenue Elementary School was eating her lunch when she exhibited the universal sign for choking. Teacher’s aide Samantha Gallo was monitoring and noticed the student’s

cry for help. Ms. Gallo acted immediately and performed the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the food from the child’s throat. The Connetquot Central School District and the Board of Education is extremely proud of the selfless acts performed by all three aides and thanks them for ensuring the safety of each student.

Sachem student Jeferson Martinez-Lopez recently won Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa’s Operation Safe Stop Poster Contest and was recognized by the Sachem Central School District Board of Education for his work in promoting school bus safety.

Operation Safe Stop is a statewide initiative to educate communities and stop drivers from passing a school bus when its red lights are flashing. Hundreds of elementary students from across the fourth legislative district took part in the poster contest and

Connetquot Prioritizes Health With Community Wellness Day The Connetquot school community came together to celebrate and educate one another on health and wellness during the district’s annual Community Wellness Day. This year’s event boasted 29 vendor tables, all focusing on different ways to be healthy. It was a great turn out with 21 student

While Dezy passed away in January 2020, his message lives on. His mantra of, “We get to” helps build positivity

volunteers and more than 375 students and their families in attendance. The day was filled with activities and exercise for kids, including making mini sand art and mindfulness jars. The event also included a family wellness workshop, yoga classes, mindfulness workshops and painting classes. Molloy College’s

mobile health van provided blood pressure checks and raffles and prizes were offered through many generous donations. The Mental Health Advisory Council brought the event to the Connetquot school community, and the Connetquot Public Library kindly offered a space to host the event.

The Connetquot High School girls volleyball team faced off against Sachem High School North during their annual Dezy Strong match. Through concessions, contests and a raffle, the event raised $1,500 for the Dezy Strong Foundation. Matthew “Dezy” DiStefano was a Sachem High School North alumni, teacher and coach whose family lives in the Connetquot Central School District. In February 2018, Dezy was diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer. Since that time, he dedicated himself to conquering the disease, while at the same time, creating the Dezy Strong Foundation to help support others affected by cancer. In fall 2019, the Connetquot girls volleyball team held their first Dezy Strong match in support. The Dezy Strong match has become an annual tradition to help

Newfield High School recently hosted a special event, welcoming back alumni from the classes of 1960-1969 to tour their Alma mater and witness its evolution over the years. The event was a testament to the school’s

commitment to fostering talent and promoting academic excellence. “We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of our alumni,” said Dr. Diana Cook, Director of Music, Fine Arts, and Community Media Relations. “Their

donation will go a long way in supporting our music program.” The tour was led by members of the Newfield Tri-M Music Honor Society, a group dedicated to musical talent, academic excellence, school involvement, and

community service. The Tri-M members showcased the school’s advancements and achievements, highlighting the school’s dedication to nurturing talent. The alumni group, moved by the school’s

progress and the students’ commitment to excellence, made a generous donation of $2,200 to the Tri-M chapter. This donation will be used to further support the music program and its students. The event was marked by

the melodious tunes of a string ensemble, adding a touch of elegance and nostalgia to the occasion. Guests were treated to light refreshments, allowing them to reminisce about the high school days after the tour.

Fifth graders at Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District are helping fight food insecurity in their own community. Fifth graders, along with members of the school’s garden club, have been harvesting fresh food to donate to local food pantries. It’s part of a project led by fifth grade teachers Jamie D’Andrea and Deena Kay, that

cycles through Wenonah students each year. Students begin planting the seeds indoors while it’s still cold outside. Each spring, fifth graders clean out Wenonah’s garden and bring the seeds outdoors. Come summertime and into early fall, fresh produce is ready to be harvested by the next fifth grade class. Not only is Wenonah’s Giving Garden benefitting the community, but it

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is inviting sites around the world, from large skyscrapers and stadiums to small town halls, to help Light the World in Teal on November 2 to raise Alzheimer’s awareness. To date, more than 1,000 landmarks in all 50 states and 13 foreign countries have signed up to participate in the initiative, which takes place during National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Teal is AFA’s Alzheimer’s awareness color. “Every site that participates in this global initiative is making a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease-

and the more that join, the more awareness we will raise about Alzheimer’s,” said Charles J. The 30th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) of Eastern Long Island took place on Sunday, Oct. 1 at Grangabel Park in Riverhead. MSABC is a celebration of courage and hope, and a movement that unites communities to end breast cancer as we know it, for everyone. Over the past three

decades, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’s 3- to 5-mile walks have collectively grown into the nation’s largest and most impactful breast cancer movement – providing a supportive community for survivors, caregivers and families alike. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer funds lifesaving breast cancer research and

is committed to advancing health equity through essential programs and services. At this year’s event, there were more than 350 attendees and a total of $115,000 was raised. Cancer Facts and Figures: -In 2023, 18,780 women in New York will be diagnosed with breast

cancer. Breast Cancer affects men too. -There are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. today, including those who have completed treatment and those still undergoing treatment. More than 150,000 of these survivors are living with metastatic breast

cancer. -The death rate from breast cancer dropped by 42% from 1989 to 2019 as a result of earlier detection through increased awareness and mammography screening, as well as advances in treatments. -Since 1993, the

American Cancer Society has invested more than $600 million in breast cancer research. -No one should face breast cancer alone. The American Cancer Society helpline provides information and support 24/7 at 800.227.2345.
