For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go. Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster. And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter. My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,

as luck would have it, there happens to be one fairly large tree right in front of my apartment, with branches that - until recently - stretched nearly to my second-floor balcony. Every autumn, like clockwork, I would find hordes of acorns - piles, literally - on my deck each morning. Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut. Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs. Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process). One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had

become of my little fluffy-tailed companion. Was he swept away with the pile of discarded branches? Had he been permanently displaced from his chosen home? What had become of all the acorns he had yet to gather? Mildly concerned, I wondered if I would ever see him again. A few days passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched. As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug. I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home. Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers. Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell. I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.

On October 14th, the LIU Post College of Health Professionals and Nursing held a ribbon cutting and demonstration of the University’s new stateof-the-art health care simulation center. The event was held as part of LIU Post’s Homecoming weekend. Among the dignitaries at the event were LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, Winifred Mack, RN, an LIU Post alumnus (’B.S. 75, M.P.A. ’83) and Senior Vice President of Health System Operations for Northwell Health, Dr. Lori Knapp, Ph.D., Vice President for Academic Affairs, LIU Post, and Dr. Stacy Gropack, Ph.D., Dean of the LIU Post College of Health Professions and Nursing. The state-of-theart center called the Interprofessional Simulation Center - is a critical part of the University’s experiential

approach to educating the next generation of health-care professionals. The Center promotes collaboration among future nurses and health professionals, preparing them for roles in an increasingly complex and interdisciplinary health care environment. The center simulates real-world situations, using advanced simulation equipment. The participants learn proper interventions, refine interprofessional skills, and increase confidence in their abilities. “What’s different about this center is that this is an Interprofessional Simulation Center where our students work together to learn teamwork and be the best health care professions they can be,” Dr. Gropack said. “This Center provides a safe environment to create simulations so our students are ready for the real-world situations.”

LIU Post’s Interprofessional Simulation Center is unique as it supports interdisciplinary and translational research, adding to the body of knowledge on simulation, practice, technology, quality, and safety in a realworld health care setting. It works with the medical imaging lab as well. “What makes this center unique is critical and will make our students better health care providers and that means a better patient outcome,” Dr. Knapp said. The Interprofessional Simulation Center operates like a real hospital, including equipment, supplies, and eight mannequins that are controlled by faculty and act as simulated patients that model human behavior and respond to medical interventions such as CPR, medication, and treatment. Among the different scenarios the Center is able to replicate is a maternity ward with a mannequin that simulates a live birth, including a “sim baby” which responds to treatment. Students interact with the simulated experience as part of their classroom curricula, participating in role-play scenarios in a team-based atmosphere. These exercises help students develop comfort in medical settings, in a safe clinical environment. “My undergraduate and graduate degrees from LIU Post prepared me for a vigorous career. I was blessed to have been able to come to this University,” Mack said, noting that this new Center will help prepare the next generation of great health care professionals.

Kicks for Cancer The Connetquot High School girls soccer team, along with coach Ryan Cavanagh, recently welcomed close to 100 district elementary- and middle school-aged students to the second annual Kicks for Cancer clinic which raised more than $1,400 to help support cancer research.

During the event, attendees enhanced their soccer skills and learned from the high school players new techniques, all while helping others in need. Kicks for Cancer is a program that began in Hauppauge, New York in 2008 in an effort to support Courtney Tomkin,

a student who had been diagnosed with brain cancer. The event has grown exponentially in Suffolk County as soccer teams across the county have signed on to raise money for various cancer organizations on the local and national level.

Additionally, students were taught the scientific composition of energy, its multiple uses and how to avoid the most common

wastes of energy. “The program provides an opportunity to see education brought to life,” said George Coburn, customer experience manager/community outreach for PSEG Long Island. “It’s really important that we educate and help children and their families understand the importance of our natural resources and using energy wisely.”

In honor of those who served, the Village of Islandia will hold its Veterans Day ceremony on Saturday, November 4th at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Triangle, located on Old Nichols Road and Johnson Avenue. At the ceremony, Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a Vietnam War veteran, will be joined by members of the Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 in Islandia, Central Long Island Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association,

Marine Corps League of Bay Shore, Vietnam Veterans of America chapters and other local organizations. Local U.S. Marine reserve units, along with members of the Army, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard, will be on hand. Representatives from the local fire departments and ambulance services and local elected officials will also be in attendance. There will also be performances by the Central Islip High School marching band. During the ceremony, there will be an invocation

In the weeks following the disastrous effects of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico, students and advisers of the Connetquot High School Foreign Language Honor Society, along with community members and district staff, dedicated their time to provide essential items to those in need. To date, their efforts have included collecting such items as water, first aid supplies, and diapers as well as organizing fundraisers in an effort to provide humanitarian assistance. “Through the guidance of the organizations, we will be delivering supplies to their designated donation site in Central Islip with the aid of our Connetquot Grounds staff,” said FLHS adviser Adriana DeFelice.

“Collections will, in turn, be securely flown to Puerto Rico and distributed to churches and nonprofit organizations throughout the island.” While every single donation to this relief effort is appreciated, special thanks are extended to SUNation CEO Scott Maskin for his group’s donation of more than $1,000 worth of supplies, and Connetquot Teachers Association who donated another $500 worth of relief supplies.

Additionally, the students were able to take part in a virtual fire extinguisher activity with assistance from Lieutenant Brian Salva, including learning how to properly

utilize a fire extinguisher to put out a mock digital fire. Before concluding their visit with the Bohemia Fire Department, the fourth- and fifth-grade students took part in the “Smokehouse,” a handson simulator that safely recreates the environment of a smoke-filled room. With the guidance of the volunteers, students used their best judgment to come up with the smartest and safest ways to exit the simulator as if it were a real-life emergency.

Genetics Conference Students and staff from several Long Island districts gathered in the Sachem Central School District’s High School North auditorium for a lecture on groundbreaking cancer genetics research topics by Indiana University professor Dr. Sam Rhine. The college-style lecture covered multiple areas

of the genetics scientific discipline, spanning from causes of different forms of cancer to the possibilities of correcting genetic diseases. Dr. Rhine also spoke to students and educators about ongoing organ transplant research involving pigs and promising new research with the capabilities to

edit genomes known as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats. Students and staff were encouraged to ask questions throughout the lecture, and educators were provided with information to perform their own inclass genetic experiments

Inspiration was on the menu for students of Tiffany Ambrico-Wilson’s World at Work class at Sachem High School East as they participated in a Skype call with Ina Garten, American author and host of the Food Network program, “Barefoot Contessa.” The World at Work class helps transition special education students from high school to life after graduation, focusing on life skills such as cleaning, cooking, shopping and managing finances. Students get a chance

to practice these skills as the class partakes in weekly grocery store trips. They are also given the opportunity to work with a job coach twice a week building the skills necessary toward gaining employment. Ina provided the students an inside look into her preparation process, from selecting a recipe to utilizing her home garden or purchasing ingredients at her local grocery store. She then cooked an Italian dish, polenta, and a class favorite treat, chocolate chip cookies. Additionally,

she spoke to the students about how she became a successful chef, reflecting on her inspirations growing up and the steps she took to teach herself how to cook. Throughout the videoconference, Ina reiterated the importance of having passion in anything the students choose to do in life. “Being able to have this experience with Ina adds to what we try to do every day,” said Ambrico-Wilson. “Find what you love to do and do it.”

On October 10th, the Town of Brookhaven honored the members of Long Island ABATE (American Bikers for Awareness Training and Education) at their annual Veterans Appreciation Dinner held at the Tordik-

Mrs. Ronai started her professional career in the classroom, serving as a social studies teacher for more than nine years before taking her first administrative role as a supervisor of social studies grades K-12 for two years in West Orange, New Jersey. Most recently, she has been working as a professor at the College of Saint Rose in Albany and has more than 14 years of administrative experience, having worked as both a

During the summer, Middle Country Public Library teen volunteers participated in a community service program at the Library to assemble and paint wooden Little Free Libraries™ to be installed in the community. LaValle, at the Selden Dog Park on Boyle Road. A Little Free Library™ is a “take a book return a

book” free book exchange. These neighborhood book exchanges are located around the world. Through this initiative, millions of books are exchanged each year, helping to promote literacy and a love for reading within the community. Anyone may take a book or bring a book to share. The grand opening ceremony of Middle Country’s Little Free Library™ book exchange will take place at the Selden Dog Park on Saturday, October 14th at 11 a.m. Middle Country residents

Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School celebrated the musical talents of multiple students during the 7th annual Tri-M Music Honor Society Induction ceremony on October 12th. The Tri-M Music Honor Society highlights studentmusicians of outstanding

academic accomplishment, with a focus on community and school service. The candidates are selected based on robust music participation, at least a B average grade or equivalent in music classes and a strong sense of character. Tri-M Honor Society adviser Melissa Johnson was proud to name the

Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 9th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 17th, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards, or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 550 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. “Over the past month, we have seen the great generosity of Long Islanders as thousands helped support people in need across our country and the Caribbean,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage

Inspirational Author Literacy came alive for sixth-grade students from Sagamore and Seneca middle schools in the Sachem Central School District when they enjoyed an inspiring day with author and illustrator George O’Connor. During two separate assembly programs, O’Connor spoke of his experiences as a student and what sparked his

interest to pursue the career he excels at today. He also walked the students through his Greek mythologybased book series, “Olympians,” providing students with valuable illustrating tips and techniques. Concluding his presentations, O’Connor showcased his quick drawing style during an impressive 25-second

drawing demonstration of Greek god Zeus. As an added treat, those students who participated in the Sachem Public Library Summer Reading Program had the chance to eat breakfast (Seneca) or lunch (Sagamore) with O’Connor and engage in a small-group question-andanswer session.

Grant Money Awarded Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco has secured $68,000 for downtown revitalization projects in Patchogue and Medford. On Tuesday, October 3rd the Suffolk County Legislature voted unanimously to approve Phase XV of the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Program. The $600,000 in funding will be used to support projects in downtown areas across Suffolk County. $58,000 will be used to build a new walkway in Patchogue to connect Main Street with Terry Street. In Medford, $10,000 will be used to support the second phase of the new pavilion at Medford Memorial Park. Applications were reviewed by the Downtown Citizens Advisory Panel and ranked based on a scoring system, which includes points for leveraging of additional funds, economic impact, the reasonable expectation of completion, and the projects proximity to the downtown. The applications were submitted by The Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce and The Medford Taxpayers and Civic Association. The walkway project in Patchogue will connect the Roe Walkway, off of

Main Street, with Art Space on Terry Street. The walk way will extend through the Terry Street parking lot and will increase pedestrian safety in the increasingly busy downtown Patchogue area. Art Space has been at the heart of the expanding arts community in Patchogue and it has made Terry Street a top destination for residents and visitors to Patchogue Village. “This money will improve pedestrian safety and increase access to Terry Street, which has become the center of the vibrant arts community in Patchogue,” said Calarco. “Once again, Legislator Calarco has come through for Patchogue,” said David Kennedy, Executive Director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce. “The funds for this new walkway will be vital to connecting our bustling Main Street with our growing Arts District on Terry Street that is centered around the Art Space complex. We are very grateful to Legislator Calarco for his efforts in making this happen.” Medford Memorial Park has become the center of the Medford community in recent years. The park

is the home of many popular community events like the Medford Concert Series, which Calarco has sponsored for the last six years, and the Medford Christmas Tree Lighting. The new pavilion will save money on future concert series events and will allow more community events to be held in the park. Calarco secured over $8,000 during Phase XIV of the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Program to begin the construction process. The additional $10,000 will help to complete the project. “From concerts to parades to holiday events, I am very proud to say that we have made Medford Memorial Park into the center of the Medford community,” said Calarco. “The new pavilion will provide another great resource for our community.” “The Medford community appreciates the support of Legislator Calarco’s office,” said Nerina Sperl, Treasurer of the Medford Taxpayers and Civic Association. “These grants will be used to build a bandstand which will greatly enhance the park.”
