Whole Foods notes that seeds also can be sprinkled into mixed green salads. Pumpkin seeds can even be ground with fresh garlic, parsley and cilantro leaves and then mixed with olive oil and lemon juice to create a delicious salad dressing. Chopped pumpkin seeds also can be added to cereals. This Halloween, don’t forget to add a little nutrition to celebrations by roasting some pumpkin seeds.

While many parents may go to great lengths to ensure their youngsters’ Halloween treats offer at least a little nutritional value, the bulk of costumed kids’ hauls still tends to be candy. Pumpkin seeds are one delicious yet often overlooked Halloween treat. According to Healthline, an online medical resource that aims to educate readers as they pursue their health and overall wellbeing, pumpkin seeds provide a host of health benefits. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture indicates that a single cup of pumpkin seeds can provide as much as 22 percent of a person’s daily recommended value of dietary fiber. In addition, pumpkin seeds are loaded with vitamin K, which plays a role in blood clotting and bone metabolisms and

Acclaimed Poconos Resort Debuts Haunted Walks this Halloween Season

This year has been anything but ordinary. The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has proved extremely challenging especially for the hospitality industry. And while masks in public have long since become the norm, Halloween masks may not be sufficient. The coronavirus already has scared off some Halloween attractions. Universal Orlando, Disney World and Disneyland have canceled mainstream Halloween events for this year. Plus, a recent Harris poll on Halloween found that, of the 1,970 adults polled, nearly three out of four people have no plans to take their children trick-ortreating. So what is the public to do in the wake of the risks of going out for Halloween? • Maintain social
distancing if trick-ortreating is allowed. This could mean staggering times to go on the search for candy and avoiding homes where trick-or-treaters have already lined up. • Consider small gatherings that enable youngsters to exchange candy with a limited group of friends or neighbors. • Head to the mall or nearby stores in costume and get candy from retailers where it may be easier to maintain distance. • Wear your mask or special face coverings when trick-or-treating. Consider building a costume around the masks so it fits with the Halloween theme. • Wash hands frequently or use hand sanitizer when water and soap is unavailable. Limit the number of houses you visit to reduce your risk of infection. • Ask family or friends to send digital treats, such as gift cards or certificates. Many restaurants may offer voucher programs for coupons for free ice creams at their locations, and while these may not be traditional Halloween goodies, ice cream is still sure to please youngsters. • Consider car parades instead of traditional trickor-treating. Despite the COVID-19 virus, Halloween enthusiasts can find ways to be safe and have fun this year.

Halloween is a unique day each year when people gather together for parties, parades and of course, trick-ortreating. October 31 is a day that most children eagerly await each year because it means an opportunity to don a costume and come home with bags full of sweet treats. This year Halloween figures to look different than it has in years past. Homes may have carved pumpkins on the doorstep and paper ghosts blowing on tree branches. And horror movies will no doubt dominate streaming service top 10 lists, but thanks to the COVID-19 virus, certain Halloween traditions may not be possible. This school year, librarians throughout Connetquot Central School District are on a roll — thanks to book carts on wheels. Instead of heading down to the library themselves, students now have the library come to them. Each student can check out a book from the cart and then participate in a library lesson and some independent reading time. District librarians have used this new spin on library education as another way to get their
students excited about reading. At Idle Hour Elementary School, if one hears a honking horn, they will know that library media specialist Julia DeMaio is making a stop with her “book bus.” Decorated to look like a yellow school bus and accompanied by recorded sound effects, the “book bus” is sure to spread cheer. At Helen B. Duffield Elementary School, DeMaio uses a traveling “book barn,” covered in faux barnwood and adorned with pictures
of animals from various children’s books. At both schools, DeMaio plays the “Price Is Right” theme song during her visits, encouraging each student to do a little dance as they “come on up” to the cart to check out a book of their choice. According to DeMaio, the goal is “to make an unconventional year as normal and fun as possible while fostering a love for books and reading.”
PAYING TRIBUTE TO PATRIOTS - Members of the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School community recently gathered on school grounds to create a memorial to all those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Organized by the school’s Patriot Day Committee under the direction of English Language Arts teacher Patty Alway, the memorial featured 3,000 American flags, which were purchased with funds they had collected last school year. These funds also went toward buying books, videos and ROLLING READS - Thanks to book carts on wheels, Connetquot Central School inspirational wall decor related to Patriot Day for use throughout the school. Rescheduled 10th Annual All Kids Fair Has Gone Virtual! The 10th annual All Kids Fair, which was postponed from its usual month of April to November 8 has now gone virtual! An expo which draws thousands could not take place due to COVID-19, but rest assured a great time can still be had by all members of the family online. This year’s All Kids Fair, which will take place from 11 AM – 4 PM, will have a great line-up of virtual classes for the kids of all ages with some for the adults, too. Some of the many kids’ classes will be: Incredibles Entertainment, Science Party, Captain America Entertainment, Intro to Chess, and an Adventure Style Class. For the adults, there will be classes on essential oils, avoiding sugar in your children’s diet, and financial planning. Since families always enjoy our petting zoo, this year there will be several virtual “live animal visits,” where farm animals such as sheep, goats and a mini-donkey will be the stars. In addition to being educational, the “visits” will be highly entertaining. Another new addition to this year’s event are “coffee talks,” opportunities for parents to interact with others at the same stage of life, such as those with a child who is an infant, toddler, elementary age,
middle school age, special needs, and gifted. All Kids Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said the time is right to pivot to an All Kids Fair virtual expo. “It’s definitely not “just a Zoom event.’ It is a fullfledged virtual expo. We have incorporated many of the activities of our live events plus some new opportunities such as our ‘virtual live animal visits’ and ‘coffee talks.’ We are sure that families will have a great time learning about many classes, services and products available to them.” Multi-year sponsor and exhibitor Jennifer Keegan, owner of Your Local Kids Source magazine, shared her thoughts on this event. “After a year full of ups and downs, we are looking forward to an opportunity to connect with Long Island parents and help them find the resources their family needs now. Things might be a little different but the virtual All Kids Fair offers the same discovery and family enjoyment as in years past. We can’t wait!” The All Kids Fair, as always, will have many diverse exhibitors including party entertainment, tutoring, activities, health/wellness products and services, non-profits, travel, and even a Girl Scout troop.
