Learning Fire Safety Tips

n honor of National Fire Prevention Month, Connetquot School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students learned valuable fire safety tips during a recent visit from the Lakeland Fire Department. Students attended an assembly in the school’s gymnasium hosted by the emergency personnel. The volunteers spoke about the importance of fire safety and the necessity of keeping a fresh set of batteries in all detectors.

All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

On September 29th, the Town of Brookhaven Honored AMVETS National Commander Harold Chapman with a proclamation presented by Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy also presented Harold with a proclamation. In addition, many members of AMVETS Post 48 Harold’s home Post were in attendance to help him celebrate his election as National Commander. During the Ceremony it was pointed out that Harold is the 73rd AMVETS National Commander and the organization’s first National Commander from the Brookhaven Township. Chapman is an Honorably Discharged Veteran of the United States Air Force whose Vietnam War-Era Service includes postings at air bases in California and Texas as well as 18 months spent in the Pacific Theater. At the National Level he has held the office of 1st Vice Commander (2015-2016), 2nd Vice Commander (2014-2015) and National Finance Officer (2012-2014). As a New York State AMVET Harold has held many Command Positions at the Post and State Level which culminated with his election as NYS Commander (2002-2003). AMVETS will be celebrating the 70th Anniversary of its’ Congressional Charter to assist Veterans in all aspects of their lives. President Harry Truman signed PL-216 on July 23rd, 1947 which gave AMVETS its’ Charter. Suffolk

County which is largely comprised by the Town of Brookhaven consists of nearly 80,000 Veterans. AMVETS Posts 48, 111, 1998 and 1174 are located within the Town of Brookhaven and have been supportive of Veterans being serviced by the Stony Brook State Veterans Home and the Northport Veterans Medical Center. Furthermore, many AMVETS, Sons, Ladies Auxiliary and AMVETS

Riders from the above mentioned posts have assisted the Northport VA run a Stand Down for Homeless Veterans twice during each calendar year. On the National Level Harold is concerned about the current statistics regarding the 22 Veterans a day throughout the country that commit suicide. The Veterans Administration has a hotline to aid Veterans

in need of support and companionship when the need arises by calling 1.800.273.8255. This hotline is available 24 hours per day 7 days a week. With more than a quarter of a million members AMVETS is the only Veterans Service Organization open to all honorably discharged or currently serving Active, Reserved or National Guard Veterans of all ranks, grades and service branches regardless of whether they served in war or peace. The AMVETS Family also includes Sons of AMVETS, Ladies Auxiliary, AMVETS Riders and Junior AMVETS. Each year AMVETS files about 64,000 claims on behalf of Veterans and surviving family members. Already as toddlers and at a very young age Kids during those days satanic presentations stage. Unfortunately, the entire world is so full of crime, Maybe it would be wiser to stick to the sublime.

In honor of National Fire Prevention Month, Connetquot School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students learned valuable fire safety tips during a recent visit from the Lakeland Fire Department. To begin the program, students attended an informative assembly in the school’s gymnasium hosted by the emergency personnel. The volunteers

in attendance spoke about the importance of fire safety and the necessity of keeping a fresh set of batteries in all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the home. Additional members of the Lakeland Fire Department were also on hand outside the building to assist students through a “Smokehouse,” a hands-on simulator that

recreates the environment of a smoke-filled room. With the guidance of the volunteers, students used their best judgment to decide the smartest and safest ways to exit the simulator as if it were a real-life emergency. Before heading back to class, each student had the opportunity to take an upclose look at the fire truck and ambulance the fire department had onsite.

Barbering Teacher James Ricciardo and several graduates from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Barbering Program volunteered their time and provided shaves and haircuts to 69 men at the recent Stand Down for veterans in need at the Northport VA Medical Center. They serviced veterans who served in Desert Storm, Vietnam, and Afghanistan. The original Stand Down was used during the

Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning from combat operations. Today the purpose of Stand Down is for veterans in need to be afforded the opportunity to receive services in one location. They may enjoy a warm meal, receive items for personal hygiene, get information about medical and dental care, and enjoy the camaraderie of other veterans. Ricciardo said, “We participate in the Stand Down each year because

we want to give back. It is a way for us to serve those individuals who served our country. We hope when we give them a nice clean shave and a haircut, it will make the veterans feel better.” Hayden Sonner a 2015 graduate said, “This is my second year doing this and I think it’s a great way to give back. I’m very thankful for everything the men and women in the military have done to protect us.”

College Fair Held Connetquot High School students had the chance to get a jump start on the college application process and gain valuable information on various programs during the district’s recent college fair. The event, which was

During the celebration of Hispanic culture, 102 high school seniors from 14 school districts throughout Brookhaven were honored for achieving a grade point average of 3.7 or higher.

Convocation Held On October 2nd, 43 Scouts from the Matinecock Scout District, Smithtown area of the Benjamin Tallmadge Scout District, and Ronkonkoma of the Tallmadge Scout District were among the 199 youths from Theodore Roosevelt Council (Nassau County) and the Suffolk County Council Boy Scouts who were presented their Catholic Scout Religious Emblems from the Most Reverend Andrzej Zglejszewski, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and Reverend Frank Zero, Diocesan Scouting Chaplain of the Diocese of Rockville Centre in St. Agnes Cathedral (Rockville Centre) during the 59th annual Scout Convocation. After a year’s preparation in earning this award, the Scouts were presented with the Ad Altare Dei (To The Altar of God) Emblem during the ceremonies

when the Bishop put the religious medal (which was on a ribbon) around their necks and spoke with each of them and their parents when they were called up for the individual presentations. “This emblem is offered to help to equip the scout to take his place in the world with an understanding to his Christian commitment, to recognize his advancement in the spiritual content of scouting and to help him fully live the Boy Scout Promise and Law. Girls registered in the Venturing Program of the Boy Scouts of America are eligible for this emblem.” They were escorted by their parents and were presented with the Pope Pius XII Emblems by the Most Reverend Andrzej Aglejszewski, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre: Venture Crew 333 (Huntington)’s Theresa Mladinich, Troop 406 (South Huntington)’s Andrew Martin and Timothy Canavan, and Troop 427 (Setauket) ’s Christopher Helenek. Adult Scouters were also recognized at these special ceremonies. The Bronze Pelican award is a diocesan recognition given to adults who have made a significant and outstanding contribution to the spiritual development of Catholic youth in the Boy Scouts of America. Recipients of the award must be exemplary

adults and members in good standing in their respective positions in Scouting and in their faith communities, and have the approval of their pastor(s) before the award is given. The Bronze Pelican is not earned; rather, suitable candidates are sought out by others and nominated for this award. Thomas Stumpf of the Catholic Committee on Scouting and a Committee Member (and past Committee Chair and past Scoutmaster) of Troop 7 (St. James) of St. Patrick’s RC Church Smithtown was the 2016 recipient of the award in the Diocese. Scouts participated in leading the service. As a result of a thorough application process, 24 Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School students were recently inducted into the school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society. Tri-M recognizes both middle and high school music students on their outstanding academic accomplishments, with focus on community and school service. According to the organization’s website, applicants must be enrolled in at least one

music class, have a 2.0 GPA in their core classes, a 3.0 in their music classes and be of strong character. With the addition of the new inductees, the school’s Tri-M Music Honor Society now boasts a total of 52 student members. Each year, the members work under the leadership of adviser Melissa Johnson to contribute countless hours of services to the school and local community while raising funds for a variety of causes.

Little Free Library Sachem Public Library will be installing a Little Free Library in the Holtsville Ecology Center on Saturday, October 8th, at 9 a.m. A Little Free Library is a free book exchange location where users can take a book and/ or leave a book.
