Breast Cancer Awareness Events Stony Brook University Cancer Center will present the following Breast Cancer Awareness Month programs: Fall Fashion Show Thursday, October 17th This annual event will feature Stony Brook’s own medical models and a Parade of Survivors. On October 24th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will be hosting its 30th Anniversary Celebration and Tribute to the Four Seasons, which will take place at JEWEL by Tom Schaudel, located at 400 Broadhollow Road in Melville, beginning at 6 p.m. This year’s honorees will be Mark Ordan, Chief Executive Officer of Sunrise Senior Living, who is being recognized for his leadership in senior care, and Dignity Home Care.
Mr. Ordan is a graduate of Vassar College and Harvard Business School. He was previously the CEO of the Mills Corporation, Fresh Fields Markets, and Balducci’s. He also serves as the Director of the Greater Washington Board of Trade, is a founding member of the Young Presidents’ Organization’s National Capital Area Chapter, and is an active supporter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Legislator Wayne R. Horsley was unanimously elected by his colleagues to serve as Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature for the remainder of the year. The election took place during the General Meeting of the Legislature on October 8th, to fill the unexpired term of the late Bill Lindsay, who passed away on September 11th. The term for Presiding Officer runs through December 31st, 2013. Horsley states, “I am honored to become the
leader of this extraordinary Legislative Body and to have had the opportunity to serve as Deputy Presiding Officer for the last two years. It is with mixed emotion that I accept the role of Presiding Officer, but I am confident, together we will continue to do the work of the people in the spirit of cooperation and respect displayed by Bill Lindsay.” The Honorable Judith A. Sibling Bragging Rights
On a recent Saturday, the SJB Crew Team competed at the Brickyard 5000. The day started out like any other, with the first few races running smoothly. As the day wore on, the wind picked up and the already rough Hudson River turned into a series of veritable tsunamis. My race, the Varsity Eight, the last heat of the day, was running right on time. The course had been shortened, and I was to compete head to head with my little brother. As we paddled out, I knew I could not let him win for the sake of bragging rights. We knew the water was rough, but we also knew we were ready. As we spun the boat and got underway, the crack of the oars hitting
the water signaled the start of our very brief rivalry. In that moment, I wanted nothing more than to beat my brother. After the first few hundred meters, we were ahead and gaining, but after a few minutes, that all changed. As we slightly altered our course, a huge wave crashed over our port side, flooding the boat. We were still afloat, but the added water weight made every stroke less productive. With every stroke, my brother’s boat was gaining and we were taking on more water. Coming into the final two hundred meters, we were still in the lead, but barely. It was close, but we had them by about a boat length. Then, our Cox had us suddenly stop rowing.
From the back of the boat, I couldn’t make out what she was saying. One by one, I saw the boys in front of me jump out of the boat and into the Hudson. Panicked, I jumped out too. Our boat had sunk, and we were floating in the middle of one of the roughest waters in New York. As we watched my brother swiftly finish, we realized that we had lost. Sure, it was on mere luck, but he was the one toting the Gold Medal. Embarrassed, we boarded the Haverstraw Fire Department’s boat. I had lost, to my brother no less. Even though I was sad we didn’t finish, I was happy at least one of the Cianciulli boys was bringing home the gold for SJB Crew.

This October, as we mark the 27th commemoration of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco wants domestic violence victims to be aware of two potentially lifesaving victim notification programs offered by the Sheriff’s Office. The Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification, or “SAVINNY”, allows domestic violence victims to register to be notified by phone, text message or e-mail when a Family Court Order of Protection has been served on their perpetrator. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is accessible through the Sheriff’s website at www. suffolksheriff.com. Another important tool is the New York Sheriffs’ Victim Hotline - VINE® (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) which allows crime

victims to register at www. vinelink.com or toll-free at 1.888.VINE.4.NY to be notified by phone or e-mail in the event of an offender’s release from jail or prison. This service is also available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sheriff DeMarco is urging residents to become informed about both initiatives. “Victims of domestic violence often live in fear for their own safety, and their children’s well-being. This is especially true when their perpetrator is being released from incarceration or being served with legal papers. Both SAVIN-NY and VINE are tools that can empower victims to make timely decisions to protect themselves and their loved ones,” stated Sheriff DeMarco. He added, “You may not need these services, but you may know someone who does. Help us get the word out to those in need.”

In response to these developments Darius Penikas, Assistant Principal, stated “we are very proud of our students and teachers, this is great news which speaks to their level of academic commitment and focus”. AP represents the Advanced Placement program offered by the College Board. This organization administers
a program where course syllabi are submitted and reviewed to gain AP designation. In addition, the College Board offers exams at the end of the school year to determine whether students who took the AP course gained a college or university level of proficiency in that subject. The exams are graded on a scale of 1-5. Grades at a level of 3 or higher represent college level proficiency in that
subject. Many colleges and universities across the United States give college credit to students who earn a 3 or higher on AP exams. To become an AP Scholar a student has to receive a grade of 3 or higher on at least 3 AP exams. National Scholars must earn a minimum score of 4 on at least 8 exams and maintain an average score of 4 across all exams taken.

St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is delighted to announce that, for the 2012-2013 school year, 96 students have been recognized by the College Board as AP Scholars. Of those who earned this distinction, 46 were recognized as AP Scholars, 26 as AP Scholars with Honor and 24 as AP Scholars with Distinction. In addition to these impressive awards, two students received the highest possible AP designation; namely, National AP Scholar. This is the third year in a row in which SJB has seen an impressive jump in both AP participation and achievement. The 96 AP Scholars represent an increase of over 35% from 2011-2012 and an increase of 85% from 2010-2011. In addition to this growth, 24.2% of all 2013 graduating seniors took and earned a score of 3 on at least one AP exam. SJB currently offers 11 AP classes and intends to add 2 new AP courses,

Forever An Original Lady Betty Ford invited Mr. Capraro to a personal consultation at the White House. And the rest, as they say, is history. Through the years, he designed for a vast collection of women, including the likes of Julie Andrews, Marlo Thomas, Sophia Loren, Barbara Walters, Marissa Tomei and several of the Miss Americas. In 1976, he accomplished the “hat trick” of being the simultaneous designer-of-choice for Miss America 1976, First Lady Betty Ford and American Ambassador Ann Armstrong, helping to crown him with his most-cherished title of Bicentennial Designer of the Year for 1976. For a man whose designs now qualify as “vintage” on E-bay; for someone who used to regularly mingle with all walks of stars, he comes away from the whole experience with one sentiment that stands above the rest: “Ego doesn’t work.” As a result, Mr. Capraro
finds himself equally comfortable designing costumes for a Hicksville High School theatre production – which he has done several times – as he did while living the lavish life of limousines, champagne, starstudded galas and black-tie affairs ... all words which are still “music to (his) ears.” The man who was originally inspired to design by Princess Grace’s wedding gown and who recently donated the original mannequin and about twenty of his designs worn by the First Lady to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives by the simplest of mottos: “Pursue and persist ... Love what you’re doing.” What a lovely person. What outstanding accomplishments. And to think it began all those years ago in the halls of Lindy High School. His is a story that deserves to be shared. And admired by all.

Making A Difference The students, staff and faculty from St. Joseph’s College’s (SJC) Long Island Campus recently participated in a community service event known as Make A Difference Day, inspired by the national day of community service. On Saturday, October 5th, more than 50 students, along with faculty and staff from SJC, completed a number of off-campus community service projects in underserved areas and for charitable organizations, such as Momma’s House, an organization for mothers and their children, and Double D Bar Ranch, Long Island’s farm animal haven in Manorville. In addition, they participated in a beach clean-up, helped winterize a community garden and participated in a post-Superstorm
Sandy relief effort. “Make A Difference Day is a college-wide coordinated service effort and it is true to its name,” said Patrick Tracy, director of campus ministry at SJC. “This event and the efforts of our students model our mission of service and social responsibility. By participating in this event, we have collectively contributed more than 270 hours of service and that is something to be very proud of.” Make A Difference Day 2013, the national day of community service, will take place on Saturday, October 26th. But in many cases, the appropriate use of hearing aids can benefit people with Alzheimer’s.” There is strong evidence that hearing impairment contributes to the progression of cognitive dysfunction in older adults. Unmanaged hearing loss can interrupt the cognitive processing of spoken language and sound, regardless of other coexisting conditions. But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the symptoms of hearing loss can interact with those common to Alzheimer’s, making the disease more difficult than it might be if the hearing loss had been addressed. Studies have shown that although a significantly higher percentage of people with Alzheimer’s disease may have hearing loss than their normally aging peers, they are much less likely to receive attention for their hearing needs. “A comprehensive hearing assessment should be part of any Alzheimer’s

Promoting Alzheimer’s Awareness In recognition of National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, Long Island Hearing is joining the Better Hearing Institute (BHI), a member of the Alzheimer’s Association Early Detection Alliance (AEDA), in urging caregivers to address hearing loss in people with Alzheimer’s and to pay attention to their own hearing health. Long Island Hearing will be raising awareness of Alzheimer’s disease, the importance of early diagnosis, the relationship between Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, and the importance of addressing hearing loss in people with Alzheimer’s. “There are many families within our community coping with Alzheimer’s and the challenges it presents,” says William Kent, Director of Long Island Hearing. “At Long Island Hearing we want to help ensure that the hearing health of those in our community with Alzheimer’s is appropriately managed. Hearing loss, when left unaddressed, can compound the difficulties that people

Meet The Firefighters
On Saturday, September 28th, representatives from the Bohemia Fire Department visited the Connetquot Public Library in anticipation of Fire Prevention Week beginning October 6th. The event gave children the opportunity to meet their local firefighters and understand the vital role they play in our community. Firefighters offered a demonstration of their safety equipment including the full protective gear which helps keep them safe during a fire. Families were given lifesaving information designed to assist them in
the event of an emergency. Crawling low to the ground to avoid smoke and dropping to the ground and rolling if clothing catches fire were reviewed during the presentation. Parents were encouraged to create an escape plan that included a meeting place once everyone was safely out of the house and to never re-enter the affected area. The firefighters recommended periodic fire drills, checking batteries on fire alarms, knowing emergency numbers and making sure that house numbers are visible for rescue personnel. For the children, the most exciting part of the
visit was seeing the fire truck up close. They were treated to a firsthand tour of the truck and the grand finale of shooting the fire hose. At the end of the demonstration, the thrilled participants received their honorary fire chief hats. Firefighters also planned visits to local schools. Animal Shelter Reopens Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that the Brookhaven Town Animal Shelter and Adoption Center reopened after being closed since August 29th due to an outbreak of ringworm. All the animals housed at the shelter have been tested and preventative measures were taken by treating all animals for ringworm, not just those who tested positive. The entire shelter has been cleaned and disinfected, and was given a clean bill of health last week by staff personnel at the shelter. A total of four dogs and 25 cats were euthanized as a result of the outbreak. “All animal shelters run the risk of ringworm because so many of the animals that are brought in are strays. I commend our staff for taking action to control the spread of the disease and make the shelter once again safe for the animals and staff,” said Supervisor Romaine. “Our shelter is unique among other municipalities because our policy is to promote adoption, not
euthanasia. As a result, we are dealing with an overcrowding situation that can only be remedied through adoptions and redemptions.” To encourage residents to adopt a dog or cat from the shelter and to make up for lost time due to the closure, Supervisor Romaine and the Town Council adopted a resolution at the October 1 Town Board meeting to extend the adoption, spay, neuter and vaccination fee waiver until December 31st. The resolution was sponsored by Supervisor Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner, who serves as the Town Board Liaison to the shelter. “Every animal at the shelter deserves a home and a loving family,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “Many have been there for a year or more, and by waiving the fees through December, we are encouraging animal lovers to find it in their hearts to bring a furry friend home and help reduce the population at the shelter.”
Normal adoption fees range from $5.00 for a dog that has not been neutered or spayed; $10.00 for a dog that has been neutered or spayed; $15.00 for a cat that has not been neutered or spayed and $20 for a cat that has been neutered or spayed. Along with the adoption fees being waived, the Town will also waive the cost to neuter, spay or vaccinate any adopted dog or cat. The Town will also continue to issue free licenses for adopted dogs. Those who are interested in adopting a pet should visit the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center located at 300 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven. The center is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on Sundays. Patriot Day Heroes Ms. Susan White, Principal of Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School in Bohemia, joined students and staff in celebrating Patriot Day, on September 11th. On a beautifully sunny, cloudless morning, the students, dressed in their colorful red, white and blue outfits, recited the Pledge of Allegience, and sang patriotic songs around the school’s outdoor flagpole. Ms. Susan White joined the students in reciting the pledge as well as singing
the school song Together, We Can Reach Our Goals. Mrs. Verron, John Pearl Music teacher, led the students in singing patriotic songs they had rehearsed, while students from Mrs. Damore’s 5th grade class explained the meaning behind the celebration of Patriot Day. Ms. White talked to the students about patriotism and heroes, current and past, including the parents that love and protect them. Ms. White thanked the students for their
attention, as well as the teachers, staff, members of the PTA and community, that took part in the annual Patriot Day Celebration As students begin the new school year, they had the opportunity to join together to remember the heroes of 9-11. Holiday Celebration & Gala On Saturday, November 2nd, The Long Island Museum will celebrate the 20th anniversary of it’s annual Holiday Celebration Gala & Silent Auction! This yea r the museum will honor Robert A. Isaksen, President, Long Island, Bank of America. The Community Leader award will be presented to Karen Brannen, President & CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry. In addition to his responsibilities as Long Island President, Bob Isaksen is the Senior Credit Products Manager for Bank of America’s Specialized Industries group, covering the Heathcare and Institutions Northeast market. The group banks the majority of the major healthcare providers and
not-for-profit institutions from Pennsylvania to Main. Bob also manages the bank’s national Sports Finance team. He has been with Bank of America since its merger with Fleet Bank and held various positions with Fleet and NatWest. Bank of America has been a long-time supporter of the museum’s annual Colors of Long Island student art exhibition, making Bob’s recognition at the 20th Anniversary Holiday Celebration especially significant. Bob graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta with a BA in Business Economics. He holds his MBA in Finance from Pace University’s Lubin Graduate School. Bob lives in Setauket, his
home town, with his wife and three children. With an assortment of gourmet foods and delightful cocktails, Island Harvest Food Bank’s 20th Annual “Taste of the Harvest Celebration” is sure to be an evening to remember. Kindergarten Playdate One of the most enjoyable days of the early school year at the Sycamore Avenue Elementary School (Bohemia) involves bringing the new kindergarten students to the campus a few days before school begins for their annual Fun Day! On September 4th, Sycamore Principal Mr. Stu Pollak, his eager kindergarten staff and PTA President Tina Garcia welcomed those new students, along with their parents, for a very
special morning of games, activities, friendship and, of course, snacks! Organized through the efforts of the Sycamore Parent-Teacher Association, Mrs Garcia and Mrs Fisher joined Mr. Pollak as he welcomed parents, and students who now make up the Connetquot graduating class of 2026! According to Mr. Pollak, “the students had the opportunity to interact with their classmates,
make some new friends, and share a snack on this beautiful Bohemia morning.” Mr. Pollak is grateful for the efforts of the PTA moms, his teachers and staff, for making this a special day for the excited youngsters. The new kindergartners and their parents walked away from the day’s experience with the names of some new friends, and looking forward to September 9th, their first ‘official’ day of school!
Making Strides Teachers, spouses, parents and students representing the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) took part in the annual Make Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at the Brookhaven campus of Dowling College, on October 6th. Organized by CTA members Joanna McManaman and Lisa Manzo, the Connetquot contingent was part of the organization’s effort to reach its goal of $1,500 to help fight breast cancer. According to CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr., “The Connetquot Teachers Association was proud to take part in, and again support the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. Thanks to our
two organizers, Lisa Manzo and Joanna McManaman for their continuing efforts on behalf of this worthy cause.” Since 1993, more than 9 million walkers across the U.S. have raised close to $600 million to help fight breast cancer through Making Strides events. In 2012 alone, one million walkers across America raised $68 million to continue the fight against breast cancer. According to Anne Thorsen, Dirctor of Special Events for the American Cancer Society, “… the funds raised at these events continue the fight to end breast cancer.” The American Cancer Society (ACS) program helps people take steps to
reduce their risk of breast cancer, and educates women on methods of early detection. The ACS invests in research to find, prevent, treat and cure the disease. The organization also provides free information and services to help people facing breast cancer today, and ensure access to mammograms for women who need them. Felicio praised the efforts of Thorsen and her organization, and thanked the Connetquot community for it’s generous support in the fight against breast cancer. Preparing For Positions Eastern Suffolk BOCES students in Jean Murray’s Special Career Education Business & Office Technology classes at Islip Career Center (ICC) had a tour of the Hilton Garden Inn in Ronkonkoma recently. Hilton Director of Sales Jennifer Donovan took the teens through the hotel, business center, fitness center/pool, laundry and
restaurant. The students watched behind the scenes jobs and responsibilities of the employees. Additionally, the students were treated to a complimentary continental breakfast and later a mid-afternoon snack . West Islip UFSD student Matthew A. commented, “They use charts to keep track of supplies just like the ones we create in
class.” Ms. Murray reported that among the field trip highlights was seeing MAKING STRIDES - Connetquot Teachers Association members, spouses, children ESBOCES graduate and friends joined in the October 6th march to fight breast cancer.
