At the start of the event, the girls sang the National Anthem to the thousands of attendees. Members also fundraised $1,784 towards the fight against breast cancer. Great job to all the participants!

The Over 50 Fair once again had a successful run on September 27th at the Melville Marriott. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes, some taught by local and national celebrities, covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the fullest. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island, and it once again had new features for its attendees. “Every year, our single guests request a way to meet other singles. This year, 7 in Heaven Singles Events facilitated this interaction in our new Singles Lounge, which had a seating area and opportunities to meet other singles,” explained

East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director. Chef Jonathan of Fox TV’s hit show MasterChef Season 6 and Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3 did cooking demonstrations as well as “meet and greets.” Several beauty queens were in attendance, including the newly crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie. Edith Jason, age 80, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, taught a yoga class. Comedians Mark Brier and Howard Newman entertained at separate performances. In addition, there were a group psychic reading, reiki class, iPad tips, saving for retirement, travel, and health topics such as sleep apnea, cardiology, and podiatry. This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer Generation during the six years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products they find appealing. The free opportunities this year include valet parking, waxing, and health screenings such as video otoscope and blood pressure screenings. Sheila Murphy of Babylon summed up the event. “Much needed info. Can’t wait for the next event. I will spread the world. Excellent event!” The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit that helps Long Island’s needy, raised over $400 and 117 pounds of food. Delaney Memorial Scholarship recipient from The New York State Council of School Superintendents. Walking for Alzheimer’s
Following the success of its three previous events, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is holding its 2015 East End Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival on Saturday, October 17th at the Village Green (intersection of Main Street and Mill Road) in Westhampton Beach. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 9 a.m. The 5K walk kicks off with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. After the Walk, participants are invited to return to the Village Green for a fall-themed lunch buffet, entertainment and raffles at 11:45 a.m. Participants who raise $100 or more will receive a 2015 Walk lunch tote and a 2015 Walk T-shirt. There is no registration fee for teams or walkers who raise donations for the East End Walk, but a minimum donation of $25 is required. Online registration is now open at www.adrcinc.org. On-site registrations is available on the day of the event registration, with a general admission fee for non-sponsored walkers.
All proceeds raised will support ADRC’s mission to care for local families. The 2015 East End Walk for Alzheimer’s commemorates the fouryear anniversary of the grand opening of ADRC’s office in Southampton. This satellite office was designed to allow care consultants to schedule caregiver support groups and family meetings, and to provide information for families and individuals on the east end of Long Island who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-
leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s estimated 5.3 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, 60,000 of whom live here on Long Island.

As a high school senior, there is no issue more relevant to me than picking a college. Over the past few years, I’ve wrestled with the idea of choosing the right school for me. After watching my brother make his decision, and then regret it during his freshman year, I’ve realized that this is a very important choice. My brother eventually transferred to the University of Miami, and hasn’t stopped talking about it since. He loves it, and after visiting, I fell in love too. The campus is beautiful, the academic reputation is unmatched and the Toppel Career Center is an invaluable resource which I hope to take advantage of.
I can see myself at The U. This is why I tried really hard to make myself stand out as an applicant. Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions, was happy to answer my questions about applying, and calm my anxiety. He informed us that, even though my grades and standardized test scores are pretty competitive, the holistic admissions process puts an emphasis on the applicant as a whole. With any luck, I’ll be able to put this advice to good use. After touring many competitive schools and narrowing my options, the University of Miami kept floating to the top of the
pile. I plan on touring the University of Miami again this weekend, just to further my desired transition into a Miami Hurricane. I’ve picked my institution of higher education, and now I can only hope that they pick me. I’m excited about the possibility of spending the next two years alongside my brother at one of the best colleges in the country, and I’m really looking forward to spending the next four years at my dream school. My past has shaped me in to the person I am today, but the University of Miami will make me the man I hope to become in the future.

Blank Page By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The bane of every writer’s existence. That infinite white space stretching before you, silently mocking its would-be-author’s lack of inspiration. And yet, there is always that potential that the following few keystrokes just might be the beginning of the next great American novel. Or not. Perhaps another day, on another page… I have always been one of those writers who wakes up with a thought, the makings of an entire essay, in fact, and then helplessly allows it to fade into the
oblivion of that dreamlike state in which we often begin our day. And, just like that, it’s gone, a mere trace of a concept that could have been. If only I had the good sense to jot down these fleeting thoughts. Instead, I sit here blank, staring at aforementioned blank page, feeling a sort of camaraderie with it. What shall we accomplish today? Do I sense a metaphor here, a comparison to each brand new day we are afforded, that 24hour stretch of limitless possibilities for adventure and accomplishment? Too easy. And yet, clearly not
simple enough for the average individual to take advantage of, yet another peculiarity of mankind. So many opportunities … so many fresh starts… so many blank pages…. Who’s to say when the moment will be seized, a la Dead Poets Society’s “carpe diem” mantra? Well, that’s a simple enough question. You. You are to say. I am to say. We are to say. The next time you are presented with a blank page, grab a pen and start writing. Or at least have the good sense to keep a notepad handy when you wake up.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Culinary Arts students in Lauren Battista’s Food Service Program at Bixhorn Technical Center made heart and ribbonshaped lollipops to sell and raise donations for autism awareness. The special career education students learned the steps to melt chocolate and add color so the end result would look like the work of a pro. It was important that the lollipops incorporate the autism colors of red, yellow, dark, and light blue. It was a multi-step process
but the students took their time and created the exact colors they needed. The ribbon mold was specifically chosen so that the students could use it to make lollipops to raise money for other fundraisers that occur throughout the school year. “The students learn to multi-task, use the skills they are learning in the classroom, and work as a team in food prep,” said Chef Battista. It’s not just about food tasting good, the students also work on presentation. “We always
check and double check that they incorporate sanitation and safety measures in the kitchen,” said Chef Battista. Students Jackie B., Patchogue-Medford UFSD; Selen I., Middle Country CSD; Jesse James P., Central Islip UFSD; and Jason C., Katana L., and Michael D. from William Floyd UFSD, demonstrated attention to detail as they created picture-perfect lollipops and displayed their artistic talent when they iced the cookies.

The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) was once again well-represented at the 2015 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at the Brookhaven campus of Dowling College on a cool and overcast Sunday morning, October 4th. Coordinated by CTA members Joanna Zalewski, Lisa Manzo and CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr., teachers, parents and students representing the CTA were among the estimated 10,000 walkers determined to help in the fight against breast cancer. Felicio expressed his gratitude to Joanna Zalewski and Lisa Manzo for, once again, organizing Connetquot’s support in the American Cancer
Society’s ‘Making Strides’ Breast Cancer Awareness Walk. “The clouds and wet grounds could not dampen our spirits as we walked the three miles for a great cause” said the CTA President. “In today’s society, all of us have been touched in some way by knowing someone who has cancer. By walking this past Sunday, it symbolizes that we are in this fight with those afflicted with this horrible disease. They are not alone. Thank you to all who participated and to those who made financial contributions.” Since 1993, close to 10 million walkers across America have raised almost $550 million to fight breast cancer through these Making Strides Walks. In
the past year, over one million walkers across the United States raised close to $70 million in the fight against breast cancer. Funding raised at these national ‘Walks’ is used to invest in cancer research to find, prevent, treat and cure the disease. The organization also provides free information and services to people facing breast cancer, such as transportation, lodging, wigs, support programs and financial assistance. Felicio praised the efforts of the American Cancer Society, and thanked the Connetquot community for it’s generous support in the fight against breast cancer.
Pillars of Character Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School recently welcomed nationally-recognized Mr. Simon Sez, Steve Max to campus. Steve Max talked to students and staff about the Six Pillars of Character, including trustworthiness,
respect, responsibility, caring, fairness and citizenship. More than 200 students, 4-10 years old, participated in a high-energy Simon Sez presentation which emphasized the importance of being a better listener and showing

respect for themselves and others. This character education program encourages students to make choices grounded in integrity and to demonstrate kindness to others.

On October 1st, the 15th Annual Women’s EXPO was held at the Middle Country Public Library (MCPL) in Centereach. The event is a showcase and a marketplace for Long Island women entrepreneurs: artisans, importers, designers and distributors of products such as jewelry, clothing,
fine art, pottery, children’s items and more. The goal of the EXPO is to provide a venue for women entrepreneurs on Long Island to market their products, serving as a vehicle to promote economic development as well as networking among women entrepreneurs and women in the business and
