REPTILE WORLD - On Saturday, October 1st, Jungle Bob’s Reptile World visited the Connetquot Public Library for a fun-filled family program. All those who attended, were fortunate enough to encounter or interact with some of nature’s most remarkable creatures. From a giant African Pixie Frog, a Cuban rock iguana and an albino Burmese python, this well-crafted program by wildlife expert and conservationist “Jungle Bob” Smith gave patrons a rare opportunity to view reptiles from around the globe. During this interactive program, he shared his vast knowledge of raising and caring for reptiles in captivity and their importance in nature. Budding studentscientist Connetquot High School senior Mit Patel had the chance to further his research skills this summer during a mentorship with Stony Brook University biochemistry scientists Dr. David Matus and Dr. R. Antonio Herrera. Working alongside the professionals, Mit assisted

on a cutting-edge research project pertained to small organisms. “The reason we conducted this research was to form conclusive results on what we can learn about humans through examining these worms,” said Mit. “It was very interesting and enlightening to have the

The All Long Island Car and Motorcycle Enthusiasts Club and Brookhaven Youth Bureau are teaming up to help families in need on Sunday, November 6th, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This annual event is sure to be fun for the entire family, as club members will be displaying their cars and motorcycles at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville in an effort to raise donations for families in need through the Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Program. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to contribute to the Thanksgiving Food Drive and new, unwrapped toys for children to open during the holiday season. Last year’s event raised $3,200 for turkeys and nonperishable food, and more than $10,000 worth of toys. Admission is free and cash donations are accepted. There will be no judging of the vehicles and trophies will not be rewarded. Free

On September 23rd, two Islandia residents Victor Montanez and Raul Jimenez Cintron - were honored at the Hispanic Heritage Awards Ceremony at Sachem Public Library in Holbrook. The event was presented by the Office of New York State Senator Thomas D. Croci. Mr. Montanez and Mr. Cintron, who are also members of Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 in Islandia, were two

of seven honorees who were recognized for their dedication to improving their local communities and serving as role models in the Hispanic community. The pair was nominated by Islandia Mayor Allan M. Dorman for the honor. A 43-year Village resident, Mr. Montanez was born in the Bronx. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy where he reached the rank of E-4 Airman. His service

included involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War from 1959 to 1965. In 1974, he graduated from Fordham University, where he made the Dean’s List (Phi Alpha Sigma). In 1981, he formed Vista Horizon Realty in Central Islip, which he operated until 1996. He then joined M&T Bank as a Senior Loan Officer, focusing on mortgage lending, until

his retirement in 2011. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Mr. Cintron joined the U.S. Army after graduating high school. He was stationed in Germany as a Combat Medic during the Vietnam War. After returning from active duty in 1965, he moved to the Bronx and took a position as a maintenance worker at John Jay Criminal Justice College. He later took and passed the civil exam for a New York City police officer. He was assigned to the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx, where he served as an undercover police officer for 22½ years. By 1983, he was promoted twice, to Detective and Detective Sergeant. While serving with the NYPD, he joined the Army Reserves in 1974, serving in the Military Intelligence Unit as Chief Prisoner Interrogator. In 1989, he was an Interrogator and Military Advisor in the invasion of Panama. During Operation Desert Storm, he was stationed in Kuwait, where he was given special authority by the Secretary of Defense to be in charge of a detachment of interrogators. He was later promoted to Master Sergeant and quickly became Unit First Sergeant. He retired from the Army Reserves in 1994 and is the recipient of over 18 honors and medals. In addition, Mr. Cintron serves as First Vice Commander for the American Legion Post 155 in Ronkonkoma and as a member of numerous committees, including the U.S. Congressional and New York State Veterans Advisory Committees, Disabled American Veterans Advisory Committee and

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine filed his 2017 Tentative Operating Budget with the Town Clerk this evening, presenting the spending plan at the beginning of the Town Board meeting. The structurally balanced Budget holds the line on taxes and spending within the cost of living. The 2017 Budget complies with the New York State Tax Cap, Brookhaven’s Spending Cap and Debt Cap, increases snow removal funding by 4.9% and contains no layoffs or cuts in service. In addition, the plan maintains increases for Public Safety, Code Enforcement, Assessment and Audit & Controls made in last year’s Budget. “Through hard work and diligent attention to detail, my administration has been able to improve Brookhaven Town’s credit rating by Standard & Poor’s Global Ratings to AAA. before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

Language Arts, Living Environment, and U.S. History and Government tests. Nine students and their four mentors were also recognized for their achievements in the Connetquot Public Library’s “Battle of the Books” program, a countywide reading competition for students grades 6-9. Under the coaching of teen librarian Angela Breslin, the team achieved a fourth-place finish for the afternoon session category and were tied for ninth-place overall out of 42 teams. Scott Maskin, CEO of the Ronkonkoma-based SUNation Solar Systems, was recognized as a Community Member of Excellence and presented

with a certificate for his numerous contributions to the community. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and also fosters dogs through Last Chance Animal Rescue. Mr. Maskin is the father to two Connetquot High School graduates, Rachel and Allison, and is a regular supporter of the district’s schools. Additionally, Dr. Lynda Adams was honored for recently earning a doctorate degree. A select group of students were on hand to give a brief speech thanking Dr. Adams for all that she does for the Connetquot School District before each offered their personal congratulations.

Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterﬂy to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

The Connetquot Board of Education Planning Session held on September 27th was full of recognitions and student accomplishments. To commence the recognition portion of the evening, the district presented commemorative certificates to 11 Connetquot High School students who achieved a grade of 100 percent on a variety of 2016 Regents exam. On September 14th, Tyreik S., a William Floyd UFSD student enrolled in Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Facilities Maintenance Program at Ward Technical Center (WTC) in Riverhead, was recognized at a ceremony at the H. Students learn how to perform basic carpentry, plumbing, painting, and electrical skills as well as ﬂoor care, basic housekeeping, and other cleaning skills. Outdoor maintenance topics include proper lawn care, developing a maintenance schedule, trimming and pruning shrubbery and proper use

of various types of lawn mowing equipment. Facilities Maintenance Teacher Arthur Pagano said, “Tyreik has great attendance and is always eager to do whatever it takes to get a job done.” Every week students in the facilities maintenance program visit a Home Depot to learn what it’s like to be an employee and get on-the-job-training. Pagano said, “Tyreik is really getting career ready.” Tyreik’s goal is to apply at a local Home Depot and get a job with recommendations from his teacher and the Mr. McDermott.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH - On September 30th, Councilmen Kevin LaValle visited Newfield High School to honor Student of the Month Daniel Stone. In addition to being a strong student academically, Daniel participates in the BOCES Electrician Program, working towards his goal of becoming an electrician. Working Toward Goals Edward J. Bosti Elementary School fifthgrade students in Sarah Wilson’s class in the Connetquot Central School District recently worked collectively to create a class support system designed to foster academic excellence and personal growth. After designing

individual academic goals, the students were paired with an “Accountabilibuddy,” a classmate who shared their similar goals. Throughout the school year, these pairs will help to keep each other on their goal path and provide necessary support when a roadblock

may arise. To help prepare for the joint partnership, students discussed what some of those obstacles might be. These included playing games electronically, watching TV or just having fun with their friends.

Suffolk County Community College’s Lucia Mallozzi, of Ronkonkoma, was recently named first runner up in the Enabling Clean Energy Development poster category at the annual Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Intern Expo and Poster Session. Mallozzi went to INL as a Department of Energy Office of Science Community College Intern

studying physical and geological sciences. Her poster was “Quantifying Isobutene Leakage Rates from Binary Geothermal Power Plants.” “We are proud of Lucia’s drive and achievement,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. McKay said that Suffolk is a STEM leader and major student pipeline to the nation’s national laboratories as well as preparing students with advanced skills for careers in STEM fields. “Since 2004,” McKay said, “Suffolk County Community College has been one of the strongest pipelines of interns to Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and second only to Stony Brook University in total

number of participants in BNL research programs,” McKay said. McKay added that the college’s impressive and long standing record in achieving these research internships includes strong Ivy League competitors such as MIT, Yale, Cornell and others. Since 2007, more than 120 Suffolk County Community College STEM scholars have been awarded competitive and paid research internships at DOE laboratories ranging from Brookhaven National Laboratory to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, and Los Alamos National Laboratory, in New Mexico.

Library Lessons the class on how to use the library’s computer system to locate books and informed them about the different sections in the building that can prove useful when working on school projects. Working with partners, the students then worked to complete a 10-step “Library Scavenger Hunt.” The list of tasks included

finding their favorite book through the computerbased catalog, finding a nonfiction book about their favorite animal, as well as locating an almanac in the reference section and a book written by Judy Blume in the Juvenile Fiction section. The students closed out their visit with a game of “Bingo.”
