since September 11th, 2001. The Trail crosses over the Amity University campus located in Oakdale. County Executive Bellone and Legislator Doc Spencer were joined by Gold Star parents family members who lost loved ones that paid the ultimate sacrifice. The CHS Suffolk County Marathon was created to help raise critical funds needed to support organizations that cater to the needs of veterans in
the County. To date, more than $300,000 have been raised and all proceeds distributed to a wide range of veteran service organizations who are committed to improving the quality of life for veterans. Suffolk County has the largest veteran population in New York State. The 3rd annual CHS Suffolk County Marathon will be held on Sunday, October 29th, 2017.

Staff and students of Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently tested their knowledge during the Hollyrock Brain Challenge game show. Held in the school gymnasium, the show’s enthusiastic emcee
and his “referee” divided the students into teams and assigned their teachers as team captains to join in on the fun. The game show emcee used a timer to challenge the students to recognize numbers, letters, and answer grade-level
history, math and spelling questions. Additionally, students were challenged to demonstrate their ability to dance, use a hula hoop and test their strength in a friendly “tug of war” competition.

Let me begin by stating that I have not been a college student for the better part of the last 13 years. That said, I still find myself enjoying some of the perks associated with being an alumna of one of our fine local institutions. It takes a bit of the sting out of being asked for ID when purchasing tickets to R-rated movies. Last year, I received a press invite for an intimate gathering of students at a Q&A with none other than Long Island’s own Billy Joel. Casual conversation, a few funny anecdotes, a verse from a song or two while seated at the piano - it was every fan’s dream to be in that audience of several hundred. The press, as it turned out, was asked to leave after the first 15 minutes of the event, to avoid the flash photography, videography and distraction often associated with a throng of media lined up in the back.
As cameramen and reporters were ushered out one by one, I received no more than a passing glance from the administrators in charge of “clearing” the area. Smartphone in hand, I tried to look as inconspicuous as possible until they had all gone. Once the coast was clear, I surveyed the remaining students to see them eagerly snapping photos and recording bits and pieces. Since no one had instructed that this was not allowed, I followed suit. The perks of being a “student,” indeed, if only for one day. This past week, I noticed a similar event upcoming, featuring former President Bill Clinton. Tickets ranged into the hundreds of dollars; but, in fine print, I noticed a line about complimentary tickets being available to students. Intrigued, I contacted the school to inquire if, perhaps, I might pass for a student once
more. I was told that, yes, this would be possible, and I could even be permitted in the press box as well. Once there, I determined that the so-called “press” was actually standing behind the row where I was to be seated, crammed in among the cameras on tripods, wiring and soundboards. About five minutes into the speaking engagement, I assessed the situation and gave up my special access in favor of a (somewhat) comfier seat down below. Once again, youth prevailed, granting me a better view of the action with none of the chaos. People have always said to me, you just wait - in a few years, you’ll be longing for the days when people thought you were so much younger… it’s a compliment, enjoy it while it lasts… Years later, I have to say, I’m beginning to see their point.

Arts Alliance Recognition Middle Country Central School District’s Centereach High School students were recently recognized as Long Island Scholar Artists by the Long Island Arts Alliance. Seniors Julia Prigl and Vincent Meyers were two of twenty students from
Long Island to receive the prestigious distinction. Julia Prigl was recognized as a Scholar Artist in Music and Vincent became the District’s first student to be recognized as a Scholar Artist in Theater. The Middle Country Central School District

In keeping with this year’s theme of “One World, One Dream,” students at Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School were recently treated to a highly engaging and equally informative presentation from former Harlem Globetrotter’s athlete Corey the Dribbler about perseverance and the importance of respect. Corey’s presentation began with a demonstration of impressive basketball dribbling skills, as he started with one ball and slowly worked his way up to showcasing his current
world record of dribbling six balls simultaneously. He encouraged the students to never give up on their goals, to continue to practice in order to improve upon their skills and to always remember to show respect toward others. Additionally, 10 brave volunteers were invited up to the front of the gymnasium to join him in a game of “You’ve Been Tricked,” which had everyone in attendance highly entertained. Throughout the game, Corey would attempt to trick the contestants into

John Pearl Elementary School physical education teacher Nick Sturtz joined the students as well, and was able to demonstrate his quick reflexes and impressive ball spinning skills. As part of a life science lesson, fourth-grade students at Nokomis Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District explored aquatic pond organisms during a presentation by the Department of Environmental Conservation. During the interactive presentation, the students
were asked to identify the segmented parts that make up each organism. Equipped with magnifying lenses, they began to inspect the pond organisms and worked together to sketch the individual parts. Among the various pond organisms were tadpoles, dragonfly nymphs and crawfish. The fourthgraders also learned of the

At the conclusion of the activity, David Pomeranz and Maggie McCabe from the DEC initiated a conversation amongst the students about how each segment of the organisms serves a purpose out in the wild.
