n Friday, September 27th, approximately 225 students from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport walked 1.7 miles for autism awareness. They far exceeded their goal to raise $500. Through the efforts of Computer Technology Teacher Giovanni Chiarelli and his students, over $600 was raised. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) held its 33rd Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational on September 23rd and brought in more than $200,000 to support its life-saving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 170 golfers teed-off at The Creek and Piping Rock Clubs in Locust Valley and 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. Key sponsors included: The Jobin Organization; The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation; BaumEssex Manufacturing; Seafield Center; Moritt Hock & Hamroff; Murray Hill Suites; Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty; Hirshleifers; and Astoria Federal Savings. Former WABC News Sports Anchor Scott Clark, who served as event emcee and auctioneer, began the Diamonds in the Rough Reception and Dinner at The Creek. He spoke of his personal experiences with alcoholism and addressed the importance of the
services LICADD provides to children and families on Long Island. Mr. Clark helped energize the crowd throughout the award ceremony and live auction and encouraged guests to donate generously to combat the growing crises of abuse, addiction and drug-related fatalities in our communities. This year’s tournament honored Republican Temporary President and Majority Leader of the New York State Senate, Dean G. Skelos. Senator Skelos was a key supporter of LICADD’s advocacy efforts over the past year, and played a fundamental role in the State’s passage of I-STOP legislation and the 911 Good Samaritan law. LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds presented Senator Skelos with the 2013 Humanitarian Award and expressed sincerest thanks from all in the community for his tireless efforts on behalf of the families the agency serves. LICADD Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi explained the appeal of the R.
Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational, “It has been my pleasure to co-chair this event year after year; the players enjoyed a beautiful day on the greens, and we’ve raised considerable funds to support LICADD in executing its mission.” “The support of our event chairs, Michael Brennan and Jeffery Capazzi, and the generosity of our donors and volunteers at

Music For Life Fundraiser Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families. Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined
forces with Music For Life to raise money for a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is
incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination. Jeff is a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend and just an overall incredible person. Moving Right Along By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic
delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even
the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between. And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing. Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety. Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

Choosing The Right College
No matter how you slice it, picking a college is the culmination of your high school career. As a senior, the pressure associated with selecting where I will spend the next four years of my life is truly right around the corner. I’m almost done with all of my tests, essays and applications, but even if I receive that acceptance letter in the mail, how do I know where I truly want to attend? After acceptances, denials and waitlists, a student is still left with the daunting task of finding out which college truly fits him or her. There are many factors that play into choosing
where you would be the most happy. Are you an athlete? A study freak? A party animal? Countless variables can have an impact on both your social and psychological well being. Before you enroll in that Ivy League school, take a look around, because you may feel the urge to select a school that actually wants you. For instance, if a school of lesser prestige is offering you a scholarship, you might feel the urge to go there instead of a top tier college. Before you enroll anywhere, make it a point to visit! If you can, check out the prospective
college because, for all you know, you could hate it. If visiting is not an option, at least talk with a current student or alumni. No one can give you more insight than someone who is already in that situation. Attend a College Night! On October 2nd, St. John’s hosted its annual College Fair, with nearly 200 present. Showing up to one of these not only gives you a broader glance at many universities, but the up-close and personal time with an Admissions officer can be priceless. Feel it out, because this decision is undoubtably the most important one you will make thus far.

Over 50 Fair A Success The 4th Annual Over 50 Fair took place on Sunday, September 29th at the Melville Marriott to a crowd of over 600. The one-day expo was once again organized as a “celebration of life on Long Island” for people over 50. To make it even easier for attendees to participate in this year’s event, there was free valet parking as well as free scooter rentals for those who needed one, compliments of Patriot Mobility Inc. “The Over 50 Fair is part health and wellness fair, part conference and part activities and lifestyle expo,” said Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, who will once again organize Long Island’s popular All Kids Fair on April 27th. With 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, there was “something for everyone at the Over 50 Fair,” she added. Some of the speakers were new this year, but many old favorites returned. Classes included two comedy shows, Zumba, laughter yoga, social media, weight loss, bio-identical hormones, essential oils, and iPad apps. Almost 100 exhibitors participated by offering a
broad spectrum of services and products relevant to baby boomers and seniors, including local medical and dental practices, financial experts, and providers of education, travel services, hypnosis, weight loss, vitamins, in-home care, and even psychic readings. Meditation classes took place all day. Jackie DelleGrazie of New Hyde Park commented that the best thing about the Over 50 Fair was “the variety of exhibitors. There was so much to see that I will have to go earlier next time to get to all of them,” she said, despite spending 3-4 hours there. The Fair’s slogan, “60 is the new 50!” summarized the philosophy of the event’s organizer, that Americans are living longer and should seek to live life to its fullest. Says Kaplan, “There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. You just need to know where to look to find them. Many can be found at the Over 50 Fair.” Free health screenings were available, such as body fat analysis, blood pressure checks, and oxygen saturation. Other cardiac testing was also available from Advanced Cardiovascular
Diagnostics. Food samples were provided by Mio Posto Italian Restaurant, Mulberry Street of Babylon, and Love & Quiches Gourmet. The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit, handled the raffles. Attendees donated 120 pounds of nonperishable food and over $330 in cash donations and received raffle tickets in the hopes of winning exciting and valuable prizes. Other non-profit organizations that participated included the Lymphatic Research Foundation, SeniorNet at Family Service LeagueL.I., and the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island. Attendees were greeted at the event by several beauty queens including Ms. New York Senior America 2013, Virginia Werner. The Over 50 Fair was sponsored by North Shore-LIJ Health Systems, HealthCare Partners IPA, LongIsland.com, Senior Solutions Network, Quantum Wellness & Healing Center, and Bath Pro. PEDIATRIC PATIENT FIELD TRIP - Sometimes it takes more than medicine to get well. Medical research recognizes that peer support and socialization for both patients and families is vital to their emotional well-being. On Sunday, September 29th, a group of children fighting cancer at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital proved the point when they boarded a bus and headed to Citi Field for a day of fun and laughter at the New York Mets’ season-ending game. It was the fourth year of the annual outing, organized by the Child Life Specialists at Stony Brook Children’s in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

The Lupus Alliance of LIQ, home of the WalkAlong for Lupus, Long Island’s first and longest running lupus walk, will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary Walk-Along for Lupus on October 20th. The walk will be held in Eisenhower Park, Field #6, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m., and the walk beginning at 10 a.m., rain or shine. The minimum registration donation is $20; for a $50 donation, the walker also receives a T-shirt, a for a donation of $500 or more, the walker receives a Visa Gift Card. The Walk-Along for Lupus is a fun-filled day for the whole family that includes breakfast, lunch, live music, give-aways from sponsors and more. Picnic tables are set up for families to gather together and enjoy the day, as well as mingle with others who, like them, have lupus, or love someone who does. The Lupus Alliance of LIQ was established in 1955, is a 501c3 non-profit based on Long Island, and is the only locally based agency that offers services to those living with lupus,
and their families, in the Nassau, Suffolk and Queens areas. Unlike larger non-profits, the Alliance does not receive large government or corporate grants; instead they have always relied heavily on the donations of individuals whose lives are touched by Lupus. Without the dedication of these people who collect donations year round and attend the WalkAlong for Lupus every year, the Alliance would not be able to provide the support services that are so desperately needed by families in our local area. With the excitement of celebrating their 20th Anniversary, the Lupus Alliance is hoping to reach out to their biggest audience yet, and make the 20th year their best year ever, hoping to raise $300,000 or more for the very first time. JoAnn Quinn, Executive Director of the Lupus Alliance, stated, “We are hoping to reach more schools and organizations throughout Long Island and Queens who would be interested in starting a team and helping us reach our goal this year. people need our help on Long Island every year, and our walk is the main source of our funding. Shredding Support Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Tim Mazzei have announced that residents and small businesses can clean out their file cabinets, attics, and storerooms and safely discard old letters, medical forms, and financial records during the Town’s fall shredding events on October 25th and 26th. This year, residential shredding will be done at Town Hall and will include an e-waste drop off allowing for old electronics to be safely collected and then recycled. Small business shredding will once again be done at the Town’s Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) located at the Brookhaven Landfill. The schedule is as follows: • Small Businesses: Only Friday, October 25th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Town’s Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) at the Brookhaven Landfill located at 350 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven. Space is limited and small businesses must first register by calling 631.451.6393 during business hours, Monday through Friday from 9
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. • Residents: Only Saturday, October 26th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Town Hall Parking Lot located at One Independence Hill in Farmingville. No registration required. “Our shredding events have become very popular in the last few years,” said Supervisor Romaine, “Not only do they encourage recycling, they are also a safe and secure way to dispose of private documents, protecting residents and businesses from identity theft. I commend our Department of Waste Management for organizing these events and encourage everyone to participate.” Councilman Tim Mazzei, who serves as the Town Board Liaison to the Department of Waste Management, said “Residents and small businesses should take advantage of this great opportunity to get rid of old documents in a secure and environmentally conscious manner. I’m a small business owner myself, so I understand the need for an event such as
this.” Documents brought to the shredding event will be dumped into a 65-gallon container and then into the shredder, enabling each participant to witness the secure destruction of sensitive papers. Paper can be brought in boxes or bags. Documents can remain stapled together, but paper clips and other metal must be removed along with any other contaminants such as rubber bands. Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine recently spoke with students from the Patchogue-Medford School District during a handson science exploration of the Carmans River. Students and teachers from six schools in five school districts located in the Central Pine Barrens participated in the event “The Carmans River is one of our most pristine and important waterways in the Town of Brookhaven,” said Supervisor Romaine. “That’s’ why I have worked with the Town Board to implement a plan to protect and preserve this environmental gem for generations to come. Building In Brookhaven On Thursday, September 26th, the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council (BBAC) hosted its Ninth Annual Building Business In Brookhaven Expo at Town Hall and broke all previous records for participating vendors and attendees. The event, which attracted over 450 local business people, and more than 90 vendors, focused on business networking and included a trade show with booths featuring local, regional and national companies that service businesses in Brookhaven Town. The event was co-sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency (IDA). This year’s event also featured a wellattended presentation by international sales expert, trainer and author Jeff Goldberg. “Build Your Sales” provided tips and true practices for business owners and covered subjects such as “It Starts with a Goal,” “Creating YOUR Plan” and “Selling Without Feeling Salesy.” Supervisor Ed Romaine, who delivered opening remarks at the event, said “The Business Expo is growing more popular every year, proving that local companies

Walking Miles For Awareness
On Friday, September 27th, approximately 225 students from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport walked 1.7 miles for autism awareness. They far exceeded their goal to raise $500. Through the efforts of Computer Technology Teacher Giovanni Chiarelli and his students, over $600 was raised.
Mr. Chiarelli said, “My students visited every program in the building and made an announcement about the Autism Awareness fundraiser. We sold paper puzzle pieces and actually raised $600.15. We didn’t specifically ask for one dollar. We accepted pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, whatever amount a student or staff member could give towards the
fundraiser.” Eastern Suffolk BOCES is dedicated to providing instruction, lifelong skills, and service to students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities within the autism spectrum. ESBOCES teams up with Autism Speaks each year at the walk to help raise awareness and funds to combat this disorder.

400 guests joined the 2013 Gala Honorees, West Islip residents Lorraine and John Pace, well known throughout the region for their commitment in the fight against breast cancer.
The Ball raised more than $425,000 to support The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, with proceeds to benefit the Cancer Center at Good Samaritan Hospital.
“Starting with the inception of the hospital’s Breast Health Center 20 years ago John and I have valued our relationship with Good Samaritan Hospital,” said Mrs. Pace. “We look forward to partnering with the hospital to provide outreach, education and programs for cancer survivors on Long Island through the recent alignment of The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation and our foundation Breast Cancer Help, Inc.” Good Samaritan has made a significant commitment to caring for the region’s cancer patients through the establishment of its multidisciplinary, comprehensive Cancer Center, where all of
the pieces are in place to provide excellence in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
