n recognition of the International Day of Peace held on Monday, September 21st, students throughout the Longwood School District participated in a variety of events to celebrate peace and promote tolerance in the school community and beyond. At both Coram and Ridge Elementary Schools, students read aloud original poetry, sang songs and assembled to form a peace sign. Additionally, fourth grade students at Coram created Pebbles for Peace.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $5,265 donation from 115 friends and family members in memory of Daniel Grym, 19 of Bellmore, who passed away from the effects of a heroin and benzodiazepine overdose on January 8th, 2015. Daniel’s older brother and only sibling, Kenny, passed away 5 years ago on the same date from a heroin overdose. With the heroin and opiate crisis raging, the demand for LICADD’s services has increased exponentially. Significant price drops in the street price of heroin on Long Island, have increased the number of young people who are using the drug. Calls to LICADD’s hotlines and requests for services mirror these increasing trends and beyond the sheer rise in numbers of young people and their families seeking heroin addiction treatment services, the rapid progression from snorting to injecting the drug is startling and obviously increases the potential health consequences for users. This significant donation assists the Long Island community by providing additional services for families in desperate need of LICADD’s services. A counseling office in LICADD’s Executive offices in Mineola will be named in memory of Daniel at a private dedication with close family and friends. “We are very grateful to LICADD for the good work they offer. The family and friends of Daniel hope that this dedication will help to raise awareness about the dangers of heroin and direct individuals to LICADD for help.” says Christine Rocke, Daniel’s aunt. For over 59 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and several family and parent education workshops

for 16 years, the last six years as Head Custodian of Selden Middle School. On September 4th, 2015, Pakulat responded to calls for help from community members at the school’s entrance and sprang into action. Pakulat grabbed the school’s AED and delivered two shocks to a
nonresponsive community member before first responders arrived at the scene. Mr. Pakulat’s heroic efforts helped save the life of a community member, who is now on his way towards recovery.

Double-Header Event On Saturday, October 24th, the women of the Strong Island Derby Revolution (SIDR) will close out their 2015 season with a double header event. First The Revolution will battle it out with The Backyard Bullies from Yonkers, NY. “This is by far one of the most physical teams we’ve played to date so it’s always an exciting time for fans,” said Doc Block coach of the Strong Island Revolution. Next up, The Slaughters of the Revolution will face off against the Mid-Hudson Misfits, from Accord, NY. “The Slaughters are coming off a win and are looking to keep
the momentum going” said Allison Hardy, Captain of the Slaughters. These exciting bouts will take place at Strong Island’s home rink World Gym Racquet & Sports Arena located at 384 Mark Tree Road in East Setauket. In addition to hard hitting roller derby, the event features halftime entertainment, grass fed burgers and other menu items from Eat me Drink me food truck and cold craft beer provided by sponsor Greenport Harbor Brewery. Fans who like to get close to the action are encouraged to bring a chair for track-
side seating. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first whistle is at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10 at http:sidr2015.bpt.me or $15 at the door. Kids under 8 are always free! Roller Derby’s first World Cup was held in Toronto in December 2011 and the Fédéracion Internacional de Roller Sports (FIRS), recognized by the International Olympic Committee as governing body of roller sports, has added roller derby to its list of disciplines and the sport will be featured in the first World Roller Games to take place in Barcelona in 2017.
Modern roller Derby teams (including SIDR) are DIY organizations with skaters not only training hard on the track but also running the business side, doing everything from securing venues to selling tickets and designing merchandise. On Sunday, Holtsville Ecology Park for the Developmental Disabilities Institute’s (DDI) annual Walk and Run for Autism was held. It was a perfect Fall morning for the DDI’s fundraising event; individuals all throughout Suffolk County came down to show their support and
to help raise money and awareness for individuals coping with Autism. The event featured two separate divisions: running and walking. After the conclusion of the race, participants had the opportunity to take part in a fun-filled day that included a variety of activities. The celebration

River Exploration discover hands-on science techniques. The program is designed to help students develop an appreciation for Long Island’s River, estuary ecosystems and biodiversity as well as become future stewards of our natural resources. Students visited various locations along the river where they used field techniques to collect information, catch fish, collect water and invertebrate samples,
On September 19th, the Bicentennial Birthday of the Miller Farm House in Brookhaven Hamlet was celebrated. The Miller family, Dr. Nathaniel Miller and his wife Sarah Haven, moved from East Hampton to Fire Place in 1815. The Miller Farm stretched from Beaver Dam Creek east to Little Neck Run. They
ran an independent farm including a blacksmith shop and raised and trapped their own trout in the ponds on Beaver Dam Creek. Nathanial Miller was the third Postmaster of Fire Place in 1818 and served again in 1829 and 1849. His son, Nathaniel Miller Jr., also lived, worked, and raised his family at
the Miller Farm and held various local official jobs, including Brookhaven Town Supervisor. His son, George Miller, worked the farm until his death. Decedents of the Miller family lived in the homestead until 1959 and several generations of the family are buried in the family cemetery not far from the house.

Breast Cancer Online Chat People concerned about breast cancer are now able to chat online with a social worker or breast cancer survivor through a new service offered by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The Adelphi program, the oldest breast cancer hotline in the country and located on Long Island, has been providing emotional support and information to RIVER EXPLORATION - Carl Schmidt, Andrew Mok and Christopher Greening New Yorkers for 35 years. Says program supervisor collect water samples to conduct water chemistry tests.

None of this was supposed to happen... Help.” Chapter 1 “Hey guys! I got this invitation to a ghost party... get your best white bed sheet out and get your party on!” I said to my friends over the phone. Emma responded “nice” and laughed. Joseph responded, “Got my sheet out and ready!” Alison responded with a laugh. Jonathan responded with, “Sure, if there is candy corn, I’ll be there!” and laughed. Ian responded, “Where is this party? And yes, definitely coming, just
wanna know!” “Ummm...it is on Maple Street...no definite address. We will find it. Gotta be the one with a bunch of cars, lights and music,” I said. They all responded with ok. “Meet me at my house in ten,” I said. Alison said, “Scare ya later,” and we all hung up to get ready. I didn’t want to wear a bed sheet because it seemed too old-fashioned so I put on an all-white outfit, black makeup on my eyes and half red, half black lipstick and some white shoes. My friends all arrived around the same time. We all said hello, got a quick snack before we left, got into my car and left for the party. Chapter 2 It didn’t take long to find the house the party was being
hosted at. We stepped in and were greeted by our host, Jackson. Jackson didn’t seem as normal as the rest. It was a pretty normal party - singing, dancing, eating, talking. But then something happened that changed all that. Jackson came up running toward us in what seemed like fear. After he ran past us, the lights started flickering. At first, we thought it was a joke. Everyone looked around for light switches and soon found out that the lights were fake lights that were put up as decorations for the party, and didn’t even have real light bulbs to light it up. At that time, everyone started to panic. Then a voice came out of nowhere. And then he came. And then IT came.

In recognition of the International Day of Peace held on Monday, September 21st, students throughout the Longwood School District participated in a variety of events to celebrate peace and promote tolerance in the school community and beyond. At both Coram and Ridge Elementary Schools, students read aloud original poetry, sang songs and assembled to form a peace sign. Fourth grade students at Coram created Pebbles for Peace,
decorating rocks with messages of hope and compassion. The pebbles were placed throughout the school’s garden. West Middle Island students and staff formed a large peace dove and took the peace day pledge focusing on the importance of peace at home and at school. Throughout the day, students at the junior high school participated in activities focusing on tolerance and strengthening the ideals of peace. After assembling
on the field in the form a peace symbol, the students held a silent peace walk around campus. Every year, the International Day of Peace provides students with an opportunity to create acts of peace and start the new school year with a renewed sense of compassion and understanding. The day was first celebrated in 1982 and was officially dedicated to fostering peace education by the secretary-general of the United Nations in 2013.

Weathering the Storm There are few things as unpredictable, and beyond our control, as Mother Nature. If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that hurricane season is not to be taken lightly. Gone are the days of “what are the odds” and “it’s never happened here” … turns out, “not always in your favor” and “now it has” are the answers to such rhetorical musings. Of course, most forecasts are still met with a healthy dose of skepticism, even in these parts of the region where that kind of cynicism resulted in some pretty substantial regrets not so long ago. Meteorologists’ predictions, coupled with dueling “models” mapping
out the potential track of various storm systems does not an exact science make. As a result, the tendency is to ignore such warnings until the eleventh hour and simply hope for the best. The same goes for blizzards, heat advisories … any natural occurrence that might interfere with our daily lives. How dare something as trivial as weather affect our schedules. Until it does. And we are completely unprepared. I will fully admit that I am guilty of such dismissiveness as well. To me, unless I look outside and see it for myself, it’s not reliable information. I don’t see the point in inciting mass hysteria among the public based on a “hunch,” a “chance of” whatever. Show me rain and
wind and sleet and snow and blazing temperatures – maybe I’ll be convinced. Stupid? Sure, in those rare, extreme cases when the forecast is 100% accurate. But you won’t see me rushing out to buy milk and eggs and bread on a whim. Because guess what? When the power goes out, no one’s making French toast. The way I see it, owning a shovel, keeping your gas tank above empty and stocking a few bottles of water and some nonperishables isn’t the kind of thing that should be necessitated by an emergency warning. It’s just practical common sense. If you need a meteorologist to instruct you in those types of preparations, well then, the weather isn’t your biggest concern.
Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright and Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro were on hand at Town Hall for the annual Business Leaders Breakfast. More than 120 business owners and Brookhaven Chambers of Commerce executives attended the breakfast, which was hosted by the Brookhaven
Industrial Development Agency. The keynote speaker of was Raymond J. Keating, Chief Economist of the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council, a nonpartisan, not-for-profit, small business advocacy group. He is also the author of five non-fiction books about the economy and a novelist who has written
five thrillers in his Pastor Stephen Grant series of non-fiction books. Also at the event were representatives from many Town Departments, including Economic Development, Law, Fire Safety, Public Safety, Building, Planning, Tax Assessor and more to answer any questions from the attendees.

Two Weeks Left to File Two weeks remain for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The last day to submit claims is Thursday, October 15th, 2015. NFIP-certified insurance adjusters are currently reviewing more than 15,000 Sandy flood claims, looking for any instance of underpayment. Where warranted by the review, additional payments are being made to policyholders who suffered losses from the storm.
“If you believe your Sandy flood claim was underpaid for any reason, we are ready, willing and able to take another look. But we can’t review your claim unless you ask us to,” said Roy Wright, FEMA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation. Getting started is as simple as making a telephone call. Policyholders can contact the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday, to request a review. To be eligible for the review, policyholders must have experienced
flood damage between October 27th, 2012 and November 6th, 2012 as a result of Hurricane Sandy and must have had an active NFIP flood policy at the time of the loss. When policyholders call, it is helpful if they have available as much information as possible, including the name on the policy, the address of the damaged property and the ten-digit NFIP policy number that was in effect at the time of the loss. Policyholders will be asked a series of questions to determine whether they qualify for the review. If qualified, they will be called by an adjuster to begin the review. The timing of this
call may be affected by the volume of requests. Most reviews can generally be concluded within 90 days. Policyholders also can go online to www.fema. gov/hurricane-sandynfip-claims to download a form requesting a review. The downloaded form can be filled out and emailed to FEMAsandyclaimsreview@ fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 202.646.7970 to begin the review process. For individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability and use 711 or VRS, please call 866.337.4262. For individuals using a TTY, please call 800.462.7585 to begin the review process.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently announced that flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 resulting from the Sandy Claims Review process will not be treated as duplicative, and will not be recouped by HUD or its grantees. To date, approximately three out of four NFIP claimants in the review process have received that level of additional compensation from FEMA and will not face any possible repayment of HUD-funded grants. The Sandy Claims Review is intended to be simple for the policyholder and does not require paid legal
assistance. Several nonprofit service providers are ready to offer free advice and answer questions policyholders may have. A list of these advocacy groups can be found on the claims review website at www. fema.gov/sandyclaims.
