On September 20th, NY State Assemblyman Dean Murray, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio held a press conference to announce that the Assemblyman has secured $100,000 in State funding for improvements to the Town’s Eagle Estates Park in Medford. In addition, the Town has been awarded a $300,000 Community Development

Block Grant (CDBG) that will be used for the park improvements. The CDBG provides federal funding under the Suffolk County Consortium. The park improvements are expected to include a new playground and basketball courts, a pergola, new fencing, irrigation and landscaping. The start date for work is still to be determined.

Going Green Support On September 17th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner held her fourth biannual “Go Green” event at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai, which included an E-Waste Drive, Pharmaceutical Drug Take

The Cadettes decorated each blanket with American flags and other symbols, as well as messages of gratitude for the veterans’ service. Resident, a U.S. Navy veteran, was very touched by the gift. “It was so nice of them to honor me,” he said, his eyes filling with tears. “It’s beautiful.” Thanking them for their

thoughtfulness, Dawn Lettau, CTRS, Director of Therapeutic Recreation at the Gurwin Center, said, “These Cadettes have touched the hearts of our veterans, many of who served during World War II, Vietnam or in Korea. Reaching out to remember our veterans with their beautiful handmade gifts has touched the hearts of both our residents and staff. We are grateful that they chose to honor our courageous veterans in such a unique way.” The Silver Award is the highest honor a Cadette can earn before moving on to become a Girl Scout Senior as a freshman in High School. Both girls are from Selden and attend Newfield High School.

Chalking for Peace

On September 21st International Day of Peace, the sidewalks around the Patchogue-Medford High School (PMHS) were decorated with chalk drawings created by Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students participating in the global art project Chalk4Peace. They joined over one million artists around the globe in this pro-peace project. ESBOCES students receive instruction, educational support, and attend academic classes at the included site at PMHS. In previous years, students participated in International Day of Peace by making pinwheels. This year Art Teacher Jean Kleifgen-Guli and School Social Worker Lynn Walsh,

who jointly organized the event, chose to do something more hands-on and meaningful to honor International Day of Peace. Walsh said, “There is so much hatred and violence in the world these kids are growing up in. I wanted them to have the opportunity to identify themselves as defenders and prompters of peace, and to share that identity with their school community.” Kleifgen-Guli said, “Chalk4Peace gave the students an opportunity to really express themselves through art. The cement sidewalk around the parking lot was the perfect canvas.” Walsh asked the students to think about what peace meant to them and then

transform those thoughts into artwork. The students got to work crafting peace signs, hearts, flowers, colorful mosaics, and serene landscapes that conveyed a sense of peace. Several students drew upon the words of John Lennon and Give Peace a Chance to influence their drawings, or created slogans like ‘Make peace not war’ and ‘Peace = Happiness’ to enhance their designs. Kleifgen-Guli said, “I hope the students that participated in this event were able to think about the possibility for peace in our world. Our goal is for the students and staff to grow closer with our school community and make a difference on the local and global level.”

Twenty-four U.S. military veterans at Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center were literally blanketed with love by two local Girl Scout Cadettes working on their Silver Award. Best friends Miranda Rago and Eviana Holmes of Troop 590 dedicated their “Take Action” service project to the aging soldiers, quilting patriotic patchworks to warm the veterans residing at the Center. According to Rago, the inspiration for their service project came as a result of her volunteer work at Gurwin. “My mother has worked at Gurwin for 27 years,” said Rago. “I participated in the Center’s teen volunteer camp this year, and found

Restoration Workshops Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that the Town will sponsor the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County’s (CCE) Marine Meadows Program Workshops in partnership at Bellport Village Marina on Saturday October 1st and October 15th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. These workshops will enable essential eelgrass habitat to be restored in Bellport Bay. After Superstorm Sandy opened up “Old Inlet” bringing a new influx of clean, cool ocean water to this end of the bay, the

Town of Brookhaven was interested in bringing back the eelgrass populations that had been declining in this area prior to the storm, and partnered with CCE’s Marine Meadows Program to do so. The conditions created as a result of the increased flushing proved to be favorable to eelgrass, as demonstrated by the results of CCE’s surveys and test plantings. The cool and clear water that the old inlet will provide allows for eelgrass to be supported, and CCE’s restoration activities will speed up the natural process of eelgrass recruitment, which relies

heavily on chance in areas far away from existing populations. The upcoming workshops are sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven, and will build upon the restoration work initiated last year. In October 2015 over 30 individuals, including Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine who is an environmental advocate and an important supporter of CCE’s restoration efforts, came out to lend a hand. The 2000 eelgrass shoots processed at this workshop were planted at two test planting sites in Bellport

Bay, which is in eastern Great South Bay. When CCE monitored the sites this month to see how the plantings fared the summer heat so far (eelgrass prefers cold water and gets stressed in summer temperatures), they were very happy to report that both sites still supported eelgrass, and one of the two sites looked especially good. Not only had the eelgrass survived, but it had expanded significantly and was harboring marine life already, including a school of porgy (aka scup) fry. The plants to be processed at the upcoming

workshops will add to the thriving new meadows. On Saturday October 1st, and Saturday October 15th, participants will gather at the Bellport Marina to weave eelgrass shoots (harvested from healthy donor meadows in our local waters) into burlap planting discs. Once assembled, these discs will be planted by highly trained, SCUBA certified CCE Marine Program staff at designated restoration sites in Bellport Bay. These newly created “marine meadows” will serve as important marine habitat for many species

of finfish and shellfish and help enhance the health and productivity of our local bays. All are welcome to participate, although this activity is best suited for ages 7 and up. Yard Sale & Craft Fair

On September 10th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner and Councilman Dan Panico and Councilman Michael Loguercio joined volunteers and shoppers at the Davis Town Meeting House Society’s 4th annual yard sale and craft fair. The Davis Town Meeting House is located on Middle Country Road in Coram. The Davis Town Meeting House Society, Inc. was formed exclusively for the charitable purpose of restoring and championing the conservancy efforts for the historic Lester H. Davis House. The house is listed on the National Registry

of Historic Places and is designated a Brookhaven Town Landmark. Councilwoman Bonner worked with the Parks Department to restore the house, seeking funding from numerous sources and ensuring that capital funds were available. Walking to Fight Heart Disease They walked for Long Island friends and neighbors, they walked for family members and loved ones, they walked in honor and in memory of the close to 9,600 people on Long Island that die each year from cardiovascular diseases and stroke – Long Island’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death. They walked to start a healthier journey and a healthier life. Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School senior Tyler Berns was recently named a Merit Scholar Artist by the Long Island Arts Alliance. After an extensive evaluation process - including a video portfolio and New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) AllState performances - Tyler was recognized for his percussion skills on snare drum, mallets, multiple percussion and timpani. Tyler was one of three music students recognized

in Suffolk County for excelling as both a scholar and musician. He was honored at an award ceremony at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills, NY, and will participate in an endof-the-year reception at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in June. Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA), in collaboration with Newsday, New York Community Bank Foundation, and Long Island’s school art administrators, have hosted this award ceremony

since its inception in 2007. The LIAA ScholarArtist Awards Program is designed to honor Long Island students considered to be “the best of the best” in both academics and arts. All Long Island high schools, private, public and parochial are invited to nominate up to five students, one in each of the judged disciplines: Music, Visual Arts, Media Arts, Theater and Dance. Ten students from Nassau County and ten students from Suffolk County are chosen as winners.

Exploring Life Forty-two Longwood High School AP Environmental students and 35 sixth grade middle school students recently visited waterfront locations along the Carmans River to engage in hands-on science exploration with local scientists. Held on Friday, September 23rd, A Day in the Life of the Carmans River provides students with an appreciation for and knowledge of Long Island’s river and estuary

ecosystems, collect useful scientific data in regard to the status of associated surface waters and allow students to become stewards of water quality and natural resources. Students used field techniques to collect information, catch fish, collect water and invertebrate samples, develop a biodiversity inventory and analyze water chemistry.
