Since 2007, when Strength for Life was officially formed, we have helped over 1000 cancer patients and survivors regain their “strength for life.” We hold classes at Stony Brook Cancer Center, Winthrop University, Mather Hospital, STARS Rehab (part of NSLIJ), Long Island Cancer Wellness Center, and our newest locations at the Southampton Hospital, the Dolan Family Center and the Commack JCC. We have reached out to Peconic and Brookhaven and this grant gives us the confidence we can support all these endeavors and then some. They will be introduced to many complementary therapies including Yoga, Reiki, Meditation, Sound and
Energy Healing and Feng Shui. Buried in with the ‘day to day’ junk mail and mixed with bills, laid this envelope. Oh, I remember we applied for a grant some six months ago…it was a thin envelope, one sheet – another denial? I opened it and nearly fainted. A $20,000 check, in support of Strength for Life, to advance our work. As you can well imagine this is not an ordinary event for our small nonprofit. We work hard to at what we do best – train cancer patients/survivors to regain range of motion, strength and endurance. The ancillary parts of running a nonprofit are not our forte – like grant writing. There is an art to that. For Strength for Life to be honored by The Island Outreach Foundation is a

Arts Alive LI Long Island kicks off its annual Arts Alive LI – Arts Month at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. Running through October 31st, Long Island will light up with over 100 impressive events taking place at 40 remarkable venues across Long Island. From music to the performing arts, from exhibitions to festivals – Long Island dignitaries gathered recently to announce this year’s lineup. One exciting exhibit, the 2014 Arts Alive LI Commemorative Poster Series will be featured at the Long Island Children’s Museum. The exhibit will feature the 10 winning posters from the Arts Alive LI 2014 Poster Contest including the poster of grand prize winner, Audrey Zhang, of Island Trees Memorial Middle School in

Strolling magician Wayne amazed the guests with his sleight of hand tricks while a bicyclist Rob rode through the crowd on his “Original” bicycle that made even the daring wonder - how does he ride that, or better yet, how does he get off it? Surprises kept coming with seven Storm Troopers,
in attendance. The Pilots club gave away bicycle helmets, while Make a Wish Foundation gave whimsical socks out to bring attention to their respective missions. The Patchogue Lions, headed by Paul Tabone and Bob Schwarz, manned the grills all day long ensuring our guests had plenty of fare to eat, while Linda Tabatchnik doled out food

Once again, Family Fun Day was a terrific success. On Saturday, September 20th, the Hospital was able to showcase some of its excellent service lines and educate the community in an entertaining fashion. The nurses from the Professional Development Department instructed children and adults alike on Emergency CPR, while the Nursing Administration set up a game of “operation” that included skills with forceps that rewarded a successful operation with a candy treat! Other departments were just as creative in their attempts to teach

Please Hold By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Customer service. It’s a thankless job, to be sure. But for those of us on the other side of the phone, it can be downright maddening. Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency. From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep
“freezing,” necessitating the dreaded May I put you on hold for 5-7 minutes? request, it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…
I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

Band Of Brothers The Villanova Rugby team is an organization that has gone through many twists and turns in its history. It was disbanded for a few years, only to come back stronger than ever. This year, the Villanova Rugby Football Club is on the road to a playoff finish. In our first three games, we played some of the best teams in the country. Notre Dame College and Towson are the two favorites to win it all this year. We played both of these teams, and although we lost, gave them a run for their money. This weekend, we are set to take on
Lock Haven. Under the guidance of four new coaches, the Rugby Team is finally gaining respect on campus. We practice five days a week in the hopes that we can win matches. It’s a violent sport, and many of our guys have gotten injured. There are no pads in rugby, so players face a huge risk. During a game, there are fifteen large men on the other team who want to hurt you. If you have the ball, you need to move. There is no stoppage in play. If the ball carrier goes down, a ruck is formed, and the teams fight for the ball. As the Tighthead Prop,

I’m expected to get in on all of the rucks. I do this willingly, because my teammate is often at the bottom of that pile. I look out for them, and they look out for me. Its a bond that we’ve developed on the Rugby Team. The other players have been like an extended family to me. I’m really liking this team, and I hope that I can play on it for the next four years. Villanova has really proven to be a good fit for me. I like that sense of brotherhood, and the Rugby Team is full of fun people.

The Islip Town Board today voted to formalize its Language Access Policy in an effort to accommodate all Islip Town residents, regardless of the language they speak. The formal policy calls for the Division of Constituent Services to ensure that interpreter services can be available to accommodate constituents who require language interpretation assistance. Many of these practices have
long been in place in the Town, but will be further executed and promoted to the public via the Town’s official website, social media sites, and e-alert services. “It is of great importance that we are able to communicate to all our residents and visitors to Islip. These language services will offer us the opportunity to convey vital information to all,” said Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci.
