On August 30th, eighty-six bicyclists took part in the First Annual North Fork Bike Ride for Alzheimer’s in support of the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC). After an early morning check-in at Greenport High School, cyclists embarked on a 25-mile, 50-mile, 75-mile, or 100-mile loop along the North Fork. Scenic rest areas included Goldsmith’s Inlet Park and Harbes Family Farms, where participants stopped to relax and refuel before culminating their rides back at the school. Groups of cyclists took off intermittently. Fruit, bagels and refreshing drinks were offered at each rest stop along the route. Participants who raised $500 or more

Retrospect By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve been reflecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years. Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.

Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler

and possibilities stretched infinitely before us. Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back? Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring. So here we are. No shame in looking back now and then to realize how we arrived at precisely this point, and celebrating the many wonderful memories made along the way.

RETURNING TO SCHOOL - Middle Country Central School District students were recently welcomed to their first day of the 2015-2016 school year. Middle Country Central School District’s Selden Middle School sixth grade student Amy Liu was recently selected as a pianist in the Tenth Annual New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Piano Showcase. The Showcase will take place in Rochester, NY, during the 2015 All-State Winter Conference. Amy was one of only 12 students chosen state-wide out of

Today the waters are filled with energy, Rippled by wind bouncing waves I see. No white caps, only gurgling waves bubble along, A reminder of the well known swan song. The sunset tops the peaks with shiny balls, Plentiful where the reflection of the rays now falls. Just to watch how the water reflects the sun, This in itself is relaxing fun. Presently the wind is coming from the South, Pushing the waters toward the river’s mouth. There, it will connect with the Great South Bay, Where little waves with stronger undertows play.

STEAM-Filled School Year The Middle Country Central School District’s (MCCSD) Universal PreKindergarten (Pre-K) students recently received a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) powered welcome to the 2015-2016 school year. A robot greeted the Class of 2029, joined by their parents, on the first day of school to meet with teachers and learn what their children will learn this year. “We are thrilled to begin the new academic year with the rollout of our STEAM program across the district, beginning with our Pre-K students,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Middle Country Central School District. “The program

aims to encourage interest in science, engineering, art and mathematics among our youngest students and train them to become critical thinkers.” Pre-K students will participate in multiple STEAM themed lessons including Lego building, life cycle studies with chicks and ducks, stick bug and butterfly studies in addition to “outdoor classroom” activities. The program is available at Unity Drive Pre-K/Kindergarten Center, Bicycle Path Pre-K/Kindergarten Center, North Coleman Elementary School and Hawkins Path Elementary School this year. The MCCSD was one of the first districts on Long Island to introduce the

universal pre-k program, which has grown to a total of 23 full and part-time class sessions. With newlyadded sections in two elementary schools, pre-k students will have the opportunity to interact and learn from older students in the first through fifth grades. Both schools have created a “Buddy” program where fifth grade students will become mentors for the pre-k students. “Buddies” will meet once per month to read with each other and work cooperatively. Taking First Place Fifth grade middle school student Alysa Jordan has been named first place winner in Division #2 (grades 3-5) of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) poster contest. In recognition of her win, Alysa received a certificate and monetary prize. Designed in her West Middle Island fourth grade art class last May, Alysa’s winning poster will be submitted to the NYAPT

for consideration and judging at the national level in November. Through this year’s theme, “Bully Free Zone” student’s expressed their creativity and understanding of school bus safety as they designed posters for the NYAPT 2015 School Bus Safety Poster Contest. The national winner’s poster is used to promote National School Bus Safety Week in 2016. Entries are judged on

safety impact, originality, artistic quality and visual impact. The National School Bus Safety Poster Contest is sponsored each year by the National Association for Pupil Transportation, the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services and the National School Transportation Association.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was recently joined by Town officials and members of the Islip Food for Hope organization at a brunch that celebrates the start of the Thanksgiving collection season. Islip Food for Hope is dedicated to eliminating hunger in the Town of Islip throughout the year, including their community picnic in springtime that recently fed 750 guests. The Town joins Islip Food for Hope in making a concerted effort to give needy families the comfort of a holiday dinner during

the Thanksgiving season. “This is a tremendous organization led by selfless, generous members of the community who are making a difference in the lives of thousands of residents,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “We have a responsibility to look after those less fortunate, and aid them when possible.” On October 15th, Islip Food for Hope will hold its annual Thanksgiving Breakfast to help raise funds for their Thanksgiving efforts. Middle Country Remembers Middle Country Central School District’s Centereach and Newfield High School choral groups recently performed at both local fire departments in memory of the Long Island and New York City residents who lost their lives September 11th, 2001 and to honor those who put their lives in

More than 100 family members, administrators, staff and friends gathered on Saturday, September 19th, to dedicate the Longwood School District Central Administration Campus to the District’s first Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Louis V. Nannini. “Dr. Nannini gave so much of himself to the formation of Longwood School District; it’s only

fitting that the Board of Education unanimously voted to name the Central Administration Campus in honor of his exceptional career of service to the community, the children and to the leadership of the District,” said Board of Education President Daniel Tomaszewski. At the Thursday, September 17th, meeting, the Board passed a formal resolution honoring Dr.

Nannini with the following dedication statement: “Dr. Nannini recognized the many possibilities for the students and the community. Following his belief that teaching is the most important thing in life, Dr. Nannini dedicated himself to shaping the District into the success that it is today.” In 1959, school districts 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 were consolidated to form the Middle Island Central School District #12. Soon thereafter, Dr. Louis V. Nannini was appointed as the first district principal (superintendent). Dr. Nannini had a clear vision to address the needs of all students: space, expansion of a quality

faculty, a coordinated curriculum, and creating a path of cohesiveness for communities spanning 53 square miles. To accommodate the community’s growing enrollment, Dr. Nannini focused his efforts on building a new juniorsenior high school for grades 7-12. At that time, secondary students travelled to the Port Jefferson and Patchogue School Districts. Through his tenacity and leadership, the construction of the new school received overwhelming community approval. Utilizing 51 acres of land donated by the Board of Education President Elbert Smith, the secondary building

opened its doors in 1963. Dr. Nannini embarked on the challenging task of hiring new administrators, teachers, custodians, cafeteria staff and office personnel; all with limited funds and competition from already long established districts. He employed caring, dedicated and motivated staff who were not only focused on high academic achievement, but those who also felt it imperative to address the various interests and backgrounds of the student body. Fifty-six years later, Dr. Nannini’s legacy continues to shine throughout the school district community. During Dr. Nannini’s remarks at the ceremony,

he highlighted the importance of a strong community and dedicated staff. “What makes a quality school district?” said Dr. Nannini. “Quality schools have good facilities, teachers who inspire and motivate students, parents who help, and a Board of Education and community that are supportive. I’m glad to know that Longwood has met all these factors. Not only has Longwood become one of the largest districts, but they have become one of the better. This honor is shared with the board, and with parents, teachers and students. Collectively, we say thank you.”
