On Sept. 10, Sachem High School North hosted a 20th Anniversary 9/11 Memorial Rededication Ceremony to unveil the newly refurbished memorial which honors the lives lost during that tragic day in history and the sacrifices made by first responders. The touching ceremony began with an opening address from building principal Andrew Larson, followed by heartfelt words from local elected officials

Sen. Phil Boyle, Legis. Nick Caracappa, Legis. Anthony Piccirillo and Assemblyman Doug Smith that echoed the importance of remembering the day and fostering a stronger sense of togetherness. Additionally, the ceremony was attended by members of the Ronkonkoma Volunteer Fire Department. Beginning a new tradition at Sachem High School North, the names of 24 Sachem community members who lost their

lives that day were read and 24 flags were flown in front of the school building in remembrance of those individuals. Concluding the ceremony, members of the Sachem High School North Orchestra played as those in attendance laid roses at the base of the new granite towers that stand at the memorial as a reminder to future generations of students and staff to never forget.

Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give.

Connetquot High School gymnastics coaches Renee Guerrieri and Samantha Tutone celebrated the team’s September 14th exciting win over Commack, by announcing that four teammates had been named All-Long Island by NEWSDAY! Connetquot is now 2-0 overall this season, after hosting Commack. The

final score was Connetquot 163.25 – 156.1. Arianna Platti excelled on the beam with a score of 9.4. Alexandra Melchiona won the bars (9.2) and floor exercises (9.3). On August 19 AMVETS Post 48 Members located in Ronkonkoma, NY joined with the Ronkonkoma Rotary to provide a history and overview of Veterans Issues on the National, State and Local Level. President Harry Truman signed PL-216 on July 23 1947 which gave AMVETS its’ Congressional Charter therefore giving AMVETS the ability to assist Veterans and their Families in all aspects of their lives. During National Preparedness Month, this September, PSEG Long Island encourages its customers to take the necessary steps to safeguard their families, homes and businesses. Emergencies can happen at any time and preparing ahead of time helps keep everyone safe. PSEG Long Island reminds customers to “Prepare to Protect” yourself and those around you. “Safety is and has always been our top priority for our customers and employees,” said Daniel Eichhorn, president and COO of PSEG Long Island. “To help spread the word about the importance of being prepared, PSEG Long Island partners with groups like the United Way and Sesame Workshop. Taking the time to prepare and having a plan limits the negative impact of an emergency. Be prepared, not scared” PSEG Long Island’s ongoing system improvements and enhancements to the grid help provide electric reliability to Long Island and the Rockaways throughout the year. Since last August, PSEG Long Island has incorporated numerous enhancements and upgrades to the electric grid, its systems and its storm processes, including its contingency procedures.

Here’s how customers can prepare for a severe storm and other emergencies: Ensure you have a battery-powered radio and fresh batteries. Check your supply of flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food and bottled water. Create an emergency communications plan. Develop an evacuation plan. Charge your cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices. Make sure to have cash available. Banks may be closed or inaccessible after a storm. Fill up your vehicle’s fuel tank. Bring in unsecured objects and furniture from patios and balconies. Compile a list of emergency phone numbers, including PSEG Long Island’s 24-hour Electric Service number: 1-800-490-0075. Discuss storm and lightning safety with your family. MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER - Long Island will again unite in the fight against breast cancer with two Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks this year, on Sunday, October 17 at Jones Beach and Saturday, October 20 on Main Street in Riverhead. Photo credit: American Cancer Society Long Island, home to the largest Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement in the United States, again will host two powerful Making Strides walks on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at Jones Beach State Park and Saturday, October 30, 2021 on Main Street in Riverhead, providing reimagined and new ways to support and fund the future of breast cancer research and programs. Both events will be held in accordance with CDC and NY State guidelines to ensure the safety of all attendees. Last year’s walk became virtual events due to the pandemic. In 2019, an estimated 65,000 participants joined the effort raising more than $2.5 million. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in the U.S. In New York, the American Cancer Society estimates 17,540 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and 2,510 will succumb to the disease. Nationwide, 2,650 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021. The American Cancer Society is the nation’s nonprofit leader in the

Connetquot High School boys’ soccer coach John Zambriski’s T-birds spent most of the match on offense against Ward Melville on September 10th, but didn’t score. Middle Country Central School District Hosts Backpack and Supply Giveaway For Students In Need

The Middle Country School District has always made it a priority to provide its students with the most engaging academic experience possible. A positive academic experience begins with having the necessary materials to thrive inside and outside the classroom. Recently, social workers in the Middle Country Central School District hosted a backpack and supplies giveaway for students in need and it was a complete success! “Everything we do is in service to our students in order to provide them with the tools and resources they need to succeed,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Roberta Gerold. “We are grateful for the support

and generous donations provided by our donors who made this giveaway possible.” Due to an overwhelming amount of donations, this is the first year the Middle Country School District has hosted a supply and backpack giveaway wherein over 200 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed. This event would not be possible without the contributions of the Stony Brook Staples, the Lions Club, and supportive community members. The success of this drive has encouraged future donations from several community stakeholders. The District’s social worker team leader Moira Kochis was instrumental

in the planning and implementation of this event which served so many students as she facilitated the receipt of donations. In addition to the backpack/supply giveaway, Middle Country Central School District’s Social Work Department participates and spearheads several programs that serve the community. Such programs include Health Insurance Enrollment Informational Night, sponsored by Health First, which will take place Oct. 25, 2021; holiday gift drives; the promotion of local food banks in the area; along with the District’s free meal program.

The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1, and will end on November 30. Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa would like to encourage residents to be prepared. “Most of this past year’s focus has been on the Coronavirus pandemic, but we must still remember that the hurricane season is upon us. It is important to be aware and prepared,” stated Legislator Caracappa. “Let’s all be prepared for the worst, and hope for the best.” The following tips are provided by ready.gov/ hurricanes.
