Archery Permits Available Suffolk County Park Officials announced that Archery Permits will be available for purchase beginning September 26th. The Suffolk County Parks Department is pleased to offer 1,000 additional acres of hunting properties this season which is set to begin October 1st, 2016. These additional properties include parcels in the Towns of Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southampton and East Hampton, bringing the total available acreage to 10,000. By providing safe hunting opportunities, the Suffolk County Parks Department not only meets the diverse recreational interest of its residents, but provides a responsible management tool to control deer populations in Suffolk County. On Tuesday evening, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center hosted a fundraiser for its Children’s Center at Nassau County Family Court. The event was held at Tesoro’s Ristorante, located at 967 Old Country Road in Westbury, and featured Long Island singing sensation and recent television personality, Sal “The Voice” Valentinetti. Sal entertained the crowd with a selection of covers from the likes of the Rat Pack and Bobby Darin and was met with an enthusiastic reception. More than 60 guests came out to support the Children’s Center, and raised in excess of $13,000. The Children’s Center provides care and early learning to almost 2,000 children annually, ages 6 weeks-12 years, while

National Honor for PCLI The Press Club of Long Island has been named a National Large Chapter of the Year by the Society of Professional Journalists. The honor was announced today at SPJ’s Excellence in Journalism conference in New Orleans. PCLI shares the recognition this year with Florida’s pro chapter. PCLI was runner-up for
National Chapter of the Year in 2014 and 2015. The chapter’s student outreach committee, which has conducted dozens of presentations in local high schools and colleges, was the driving force behind this year’s honor, according to SPJ President Paul Fletcher, who presented the honor to PCLI President Chris
Vaccaro at the conference. “This is a tremendous honor that we do not take lightly,” said Vaccaro. “It has been our goal to stand tall among the best SPJ chapters in the country and today we achieved that. We will continue to work extremely hard on behalf of our members and journalism on Long Island.”

CLEAN-UP A SUCCESS - On August 27th, Councilman Kevin LaValle, (center), and Councilman Neil Foley co-sponsored a clean-up of the Lake Ronkonkoma area with the Lake Ronkonkoma Improvement Group and 100 volunteers. Michael Murphy Park was the meeting place where crews got their assignments and supplies. During the event, volunteers collected over 10,300 pounds of trash and 17,000 pounds of brush. Afterwards, Councilman LaValle and Councilman Foley provided food and refreshments for the volunteers in appreciation of their hard work.

SCHOOL SAFETY NIGHT - On September 15th, School Safety Night was hosted by St. Joseph School in Ronkonkoma. Children and adults were given the opportunity to meet and interact with community first responders from a variety of different organizations. They also learned about how the school and the church have made advancements in security and safety for the community. Some of the advancements are training all staff in CPR and AED operations, first aid awareness, trauma kits placed in every classroom, updated policies for school emergency drills and updated security system and security panels. Also on hand were representatives from the Suffolk County Police Department, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Ronkonkoma Fire Department and Ronkonkoma EMS.

Preparing Your Fireplace or Stove for the Season
Fireplaces and wood-burning stoves not only can be beautiful focal points within a home, but they also provide an additional source of heat and can be used to keep rooms or entire homes comfortable without the need for additional and potentially costly heating sources. Just like more modern home heating systems, stoves and fireplaces need to be maintained, and that maintenance includes readying them before winter when they are used more heavily. Ensuring a fireplace or stove is in good working order helps to guarantee efficiency of use and safety during the winter months. Open-flame heating sources carry with them certain risks. The National Fire Protection Association states that, between 2009-2013, American fire departments responded to
56,000 home structure fires that involved heating equipment. The NFPA notes that the leading factor contributing to home-heating fires is a failure to keep things clean, principally from solid-fueled heating equipment. The following are a handful of ways to stay safe as you get ready for another cozy season around the fire: Start with the chimney. Begin by having your chimney thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Creosote can build up inside of the chimney. Creosote is highly flammable and becomes more difficult and expensive to clean the longer it builds up inside your flue lining. In addition, animals may have created nest inside of the chimney since the last time the fireplace was used. A professional
chimney sweep should be hired in this situation. He or she will be able to effectively clean the
chimney in a manner that is the least messy and disruptive to residents. Install or check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Operational alarms are essential to preventing injury or death resulting from smoke or carbon monoxide
inhalation. Such detectors are inexpensive safeguards that should be installed on every floor of the house. Batteries should be replaced every six months, and the alarms themselves should be changed every five to 10 years. Inspect the chimney from outdoors as well. Inspect the mortar around any bricks in the chimney and surrounding areas for cracks. If left unaddressed, these can cause dangerous fires. If there are serious cracks, a professional may need to make repairs or the chimney may need to be replaced. You also can have the chimney capped with a screen to keep animals and debris from entering. Inspect the damper. A damper is a
valve or plate that stops or regulates the flow of air inside a chimney. It should be checked prior to the first use of a stove or fireplace so homeowners can be certain it opens and closes smoothly. Clear out flammable items. Move flammable items away from the front of a fireplace or stove. Be sure curtains or other home furnishings are far enough away that they will not catch fire from any errant sparks or flames. Order wood now. Be sure there is plenty of wood for the season. Ask a wood supplier to estimate just how much will be needed, and double-check that the wood will arrive in time for the start of the season. By preparing for fireplace and wood stove use now, homeowners can ensure their winters are comfortable and safe.
The Middle Country Central School District (MCCSD) is excited to announce that four new administrators have joined the District staff this fall. Adele Cullen will serve as Coordinator of PPS/Special Education in Secondary Education, Marie Moran will serve as Coordinator of PPS/Special Education in Elementary Education, Peter Desjardins will serve as Coordinator of District Data Services and Rachel Ndembera will serve as Coordinator of Science/ Research K-12. “It is with great pride that we welcome these four dedicated administrators to our District,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Schools. “We continuously strive to bring the best experiences and support to our students throughout their educational careers, and these new members of our team will help achieve this goal.” Adele Cullen attended Touro College where she earned her Master of Science in School
District/School Building. As a school psychologist at Newfield High School, she has positively affected innumerable students these past six years and will continue to do so as she brings her passion and keen understanding of student’s strengths and needs to the team of administrators. Marie Moran graduated from Hofstra University with a Master of Science in Special Education and holds an Advanced Graduate Certificate in School Building Leadership from Queens College. She gained experience as a special education coordinator at a K-8 school district in Queens before she joined MCCSD’s administrative team. Marie is passionate about providing high quality special education and is committed to supporting the needs of all students. Peter Desjardins will be responsible for utilizing student data to aid teachers in providing individualized instruction to students.
Peter graduated cum laude from Stony Brook University with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science Education, and gained his Masters in Liberal Arts from Stony Brook as well. He plans to use his experiences as a student data expert at Eastern Suffolk BOCES to provide a one of a kind learning experience for MCCSD students. Rachel Ndembera earned a degree in Geology and Astronomy from the University of Colorado in Boulder and served in the Peace Corps, during which she worked with Botswanna’s Ministry of Education Department of Curriculum Development and Evaluation. There, she oversaw the design and implementation of a curriculum program in Molepolole, one of Botswanna’s largest villages. She hopes to continue in assisting students make sure they have the necessary tools to achieve high quality research education.

Catlin, a described autistic savant, has earned national attention for memorizing the names, addresses and birthdates of almost 4,000 people around the world. Her remarkable talent has led her to send each of these individuals a personal birthday greeting annually. “Edward J. Bosti fifth-

major problems you’re not told about, such as flood damage, bad accidents or odometer problems. Some may even have a different Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), a trick used by thieves to hide the true identity of stolen cars. Look for: 1. Strange marks or scratches on the dashboard VIN plate or sticker inside the driver’s side door. 2. Any car documents where the VIN looks
altered. 3. Multiple VINs on different pieces of paperwork. 4. The seller’s name not appearing on car title or registration. What to do: Shop online at a place like carfax. com. It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000. Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School. Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into
anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins. But for me, it is and always will be, home. The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed. Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the
festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy. And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!
