Nigro. “By climbing steps each year, every participant not only raises funds to support the families of FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice, they also ensure those we have lost are never forgotten.” Gates open and on-site registration begins at 8:30 am. As hundreds did last October, participants will climb the equivalent of 110 stories to symbolize the steps of the World Trade Center Towers. All climbers will receive a t-shirt and a name badge for the firefighter they are honoring. “The National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters is a journey of hope, raising funds to help programs for surviving relatives of firefighters across the country,” said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, Executive Director of the NFFF. “Approximately 80 firefighters die in the line of duty each year in the U.S. and this is a way to let the families know they and their firefighters are not forgotten.” The stair climb is a family event and we encourage

you to bring family and friends. An After Climb Party and Races will begin at 11:30 a.m., featuring a BBQ Buffet and unlimited draft beer and soda. There will also be bounce castles, pony rides and fun for the entire family. In addition, the New York Racing Association will raffle two (2) 2018 Belmont Stakes Day reserved seats valued at $200 each. Some will climb to remember a relative. Some will climb to honor a friend. And some will climb to show gratitude for the great sacrifices made 16 years ago. Together, firefighters, police officers and the public will climb the stairs of Belmont Park to pay respects to our nation’s fallen firefighters and to support their survivors. On Sunday, October 1st, the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) will host the 3rd Annual National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters at Belmont Park. This is the first time the Stair Climb will be held in Nassau County, paying tribute to the 496 Long Islanders who were among the almost 3,000 killed 16 years ago. Of those, 125 fallen FDNY members were from Long Island. “The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation performs extraordinary work providing resources for the families of fallen heroes across the country,” said Fire Commissioner

Prepping for the Year The Connetquot Central School District recently hosted its annual Superintendent’s Conference Day, inviting all district staff and employees to come together and share best practices in preparation for the upcoming school year. During the first day of the two-day program, faculty and staff members gathered at Connetquot High School to learn about innovations of mindfulness

The training demonstration, presented by Dr. Chris Byron of Nationwide Instruction for Cardiovascular Education, equipped the attending staff members with life-saving information and techniques that all attendees will be able to utilize should an emergency situation arise.

Connetquot High School juniors and science research students Christopher Picchiello and Giavana Prucha spent a week this summer conducting scientific experiments and furthering their scientific knowledge at Brookhaven National Lab’s National Synchrotron Light SourceII. After learning about the facility’s capabilities

through a series of lectures by scientists from NSLS-II and SUNY Stony Brook, the students gained hands-on experience in the process of protein crystallization and x-ray crystallography. By week’s end, they were able to harvest protein crystals and use both the AMX and FMX beamlines to produce high resolution diffraction patterns. These images were then processed by the students

using advanced software to create 3-D images of the proteins as they bound different ligands. The students will now be able to use their knowledge and experiences to develop proposals to submit to Brookhaven National Lab’s National Synchrotron Light Source-II to access time to use these beamlines for their future research projects.

Elected to Board of Directors

Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) at the Association’s Annual Meeting in Onondaga County last week. “County Executive Bellone is an important county leader on Long Island and in New York State. His participation is critical as NYSAC continues to voice critical county concerns to State and Federal representatives,” said NYSAC President MaryEllen Odell, the Putnam County Executive. “His perspective on the board - sharing best practices and directing our advocacy efforts - will improve our ability to help counties and property taxpayers all over the

state.” NYSAC represents New York’s 57 counties and the City of New York in Albany and Washington on matters germane to county governments, and informs county officials and the public about issues that impact county governments across the state. County Executive Bellone was first elected in 2011, and again in 2015. Previously he served as the Babylon Town Supervisor from 2001-2011. He is the 8th County Executive in county history. As county executive, Mr. Bellone has focused on saving taxpayer dollars, creating jobs, improving Long Island’s water quality, and enhancing the quality of life for Suffolk County residents.

Sachem Central School District High School East senior Tharini Prakash and High School North senior Paige Menneci have been selected as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Prakash is president of the English Honor Society and treasurer of class government. She is also an active member of the National, Foreign Language, Math, History and Science honor societies. Menneci has been an Advanced Placement student since ninth grade and boasts perfect NYSSMA scores from grades eight through 12. She is a member of the National Honor Society, for which she also serves as secretary, as well as the Foreign Language and Science honor societies. More than 1.6 million juniors from high schools across the country entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of 16,000 semifinalists represents 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants from each state. In February, 15,000 semifinalists will be selected to advance to finalist standing.

Thanks to the staff at Cohen, I not only survived, I thrived.” Danielle Cassar, 21, of Levittown, was just 8-years-old when she was diagnosed with stage 4 Wilms tumor kidney cancer. She was officially declared cancer-free at age 12 and is now an accomplished student. Because of what she’s gone through, Danielle is considering a career as a pediatric oncology nurse. “Cancer created the foundation of my life,” she said. “I’m grateful to be alive, breathing and on this Earth. I am not the same person I was before cancer. I am a stronger, braver person now. Cancer proves miracles happen every day.” Joining in the applause for Spencer and Danielle was Charles Schleien, MD, chair of pediatrics

at Northwell Health and executive director of Cohen Children’s Medical Center. When asked about the importance of the day, Dr. Schleien said simply, “Today is the reason why all of us who work in healthcare come to work each and every single day.” As a leading center of pediatric oncology, Cohen sees over 200 new cases of childhood cancer every year. This results in hundreds of childhood cancer survivors requiring ongoing care. The hundreds of people who attended the day’s program are members of Survivors Facing Forward, a program designed to meet the complex needs of survivors. The day’s event was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Ruth and Harold Nelkin, who lost their son Les to a form of pediatric cancer in 2001.

Northwell Health and the Americana Manhasset raised a record total of over $1.1 million for women’s health at the 25th annual Katz Institute for Women’s Health Luncheon and Fashion Show featuring the Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2017 Collection. Two former patients took the runway at Old Westbury Gardens and shared their personal stories as they walked alongside the physicians who impacted their lives. Supermodel Carol Alt, also a patient of the Katz Institute, surprised guests in attendance and walked the runway to thank her doctors for the care she has received. Iris and Saul Katz, longtime supporters of Northwell Health and

partners in the creation of the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and the Katz women’s hospitals, were celebrated as the event’s honorees. Presented by the Partners Council for Women’s Health, coanchor of Fox 5’s Good Day New York, Rosanna Scotto emceed the event, which supports the unique and complex health care needs of women. “At Katz Institute for Women’s Health, we see women’s health differently,” said Stacey Rosen, MD, Northwell Health’s vice president of women’s health. “Our mission is to create a new model of women’s health that not only delivers integrated, specialized clinical care, but also educates and empowers

women to proactively take care of themselves and their families.” To date, the Katz Institute Luncheon and Fashion show has raised more than $9.3 million in support of women’s health. Money raised at this year’s event will support areas including new technology in the treatment of breast cancer, women with disabilities and reconstructive surgery using 3D bioprinting. Hundreds of pediatric cancer survivors and their family members joined for a day of fun, food, music and inspiration at the fifth annual Les Nelkin Pediatric Cancer Survivors’ Day event hosted by Cohen Children’s Medical Center at Eisenhower Park. A highlight of the program included brief remarks made by young adult ambassadors of the hospital’s “Survivors Facing Forward” program. Spencer Ford, 16, of Queens, was only 2 ½ months old when he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that forms in the adrenal glands. He was declared cancer-free in 2004 and is now a thriving high school junior. In an emotional speech, Spencer told the cheering crowd, “Seeing all my fellow survivors here reminds me of how far we’ve come. I want to say thank you to

The Answer That’s why the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires homeowners by law to inspect and remove gypsy moth egg masses from household goods prior to moving across state lines—and get an official certificate of inspection. What You Need To Do

• Check all outdoor household goods— lawn furniture, grills, outdoor toys, camping equipment—for egg masses. • Use a putty knife, stiff brush or similar hand tool to dispose of any egg masses you do find into a container of hot, soapy water, or place them in a plastic bag, seal it, and set

it in the sun. To get the certificate, you can perform a selfinspection or hire a state-certified pesticide applicator. The American Moving and Storage Association says you should then give the inspection certificate to your moving van driver.

Gershow Recycling sponsored and donated $2,000 to help defray the costs of putting on the ninth annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament, which was held August 12th at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex in Medford. The goals of Play For Peace are to bring together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer and to use sports as a way for people from different ethnic backgrounds to find common ground. The annual tournament is organized by the Office of Suffolk County Legislator Robert Calarco. The Play for Peace Soccer Tournament was first organized in 2009

through the office of thenLegislator Jack Eddington in conjunction with the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League as a response to the Marcelo Lucero tragedy. In 2011, when Legislator Calarco was elected, he carried on the tradition of presenting the tournament. Joselo Lucero, Marcelo’s brother, spoke to the crowd about the importance of having an event such as this to bring the community together. Approximately 500 spectators came to this free event. Fourteen teams - seven men’s teams and seven women’s teams - participated in the tournament. In the men’s division, PatchogueMedford Youth Soccer League was the winning

team, while Suffolk Federal Credit Union won the women’s division. The Best Sportsmanship Awards went to Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association in the men’s division and The Calarco Team in the women’s division. “Gershow Recycling is pleased again to support this year’s ‘Play for Peace.’ We salute former Legislator Eddington for establishing this event and Legislator Calarco for continuing it, as an effort to bring members of our diverse communities together and build understanding through sports,” said Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling.
