The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant. Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation! The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).

On Friday, September 27th at 11 a.m., there will be a FREE Emergency Preparedness Training at the Longwood Public Library (800 Middle Country Road, Middle Island) hosted by Senator Ken LaValle, Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano, County Executive Bellone, and Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker. The program will give residents of all ages the tools and resources they need to prepare for disasters and respond accordingly. Free Emergency Starter Kits that include first aid kits, goggles, gloves, and more, will be given to each
household upon successful completion of the training. “As we begin to enter hurricane season, it is important that all residents are prepared for emergency situations,” said Legislator Anker. “I encourage residents to participate in

Back To School Fresh Team Scher with Coldwell Banker Residential, RCG Mortage and Champion Cuts recently sponsored free school supplies and haircuts for students in the Sachem School District. “Back to School Fresh” took place Sunday, September 1, at Champion Cuts located at 374 Mooney
Pond Rd, in Farmingville. All Sachem Students and Parents were invited. As an added treat food and refreshments were served for all students and parents in attendance. All school supplies were donated by Team Scher and RCG Mortage. This inaugural drive was the
first of its kind in the Sachem School district. In preparation for this event Carlos J. Salinas of Team Scher had the opportunity to speak to the Deputy Superintendent John J. O’Keefe “very worthy idea and cause. Kudos to you and your team” he said.

Ronda Gross, RN, MSN, vice president of Northwell NetworkCare and Mark Jarrett, MD, SVP, chief quality officer for Northwell Health, have each received the Doctor Chandler award from the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association (PBA), in recognition of their outstanding medical expertise and development of the highest level of care for New York State Troopers and their families. Both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have worked with the State Trooper Surgeons, a division of the official union of New York State Troopers – the NYS Troopers PBA, for several years. They have each played a direct role in the creation of the PBA’s Statewide Health Care Navigation Service, providing necessary assistance, to some 15,000 Troopers and their family members. In doing so, both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have protected those who protect the people of New York. Ronda Gross, who serves as a medical liaison to the medical care team, has played a direct role in guiding access to care for many NYS Troopers. Her relationship with the New York State Troopers began in September of 2015 when she was asked to initiate a referral relationship with their organization. In response to that request, Ms. Gross created the NYS Troopers and PBA Hotline a dedicated line to the clinical care team of Northwell registered nurses available 24/7 to assist New York State Troopers. NYS Trooper Sergeant John Antonelli serves as an example of this collaborative relationship. After sustaining critical injuries in the line of duty, Sgt. Antonelli underwent several complex surgeries at Lenox Hill Hospital. From the beginning of
his health crisis, Ms. Gross and her team took the lead in organizing his hospital stay, scheduling his medical appointments and surgeries, even participated in a Trooper escort upon discharge. It was thanks to the ongoing collaboration of each team involved in his care that, Sgt. Antonelli was able to leave the hospital after five days of inpatient care on his own to continue his recovery at home. “In health care we’re here to serve, much like the New York State Troopers protect and serve,” said Ronda. Gross. “Receiving this award is an honor that validates what we do every day at Northwell NetworkCare, providing the best possible care for everyone.” Dr. Mark Jarrett, who served as a Trooper Surgeon for the past four years, is now a chief medical administrator on the advisory board of the State Trooper Surgeons program. In this capacity, Dr. Jarrett was instrumental in developing a transport system for Troopers in need, either moving them from one health system location to another or bringing them home following hospitalization. In addition, Dr. Jarrett has also served on the NYS Troopers business leadership committee. “We are honored to receive this award from the NYS Troopers PBA,” said Dr. Jarrett, “The opportunity to help those who serve and their families is our reward.” “Northwell Health continues to be a stellar option for many of our NYS Troopers and we sincerely appreciate the relationships we have built with Ronda Gross and Dr. Mark Jarrett,” said Michael Brooks, Director of Medical Operations for the State Trooper Surgeons
Program. “They have both played an invaluable role in developing key communication protocols for our healthcare navigation program, helping patients gain access to the right care at the right time. Teacher Recognized By Students East Northport Middle School science teacher, John Braun, was honored in Albany on Sept. 10 as one of four finalists for the New York State Teacher of the Year award. The seventh-grade science teacher was nominated by two of his students last year and following a subsequent letter of recommendation from their mother, Margarita Wickard, he was entered in the running. In her letter, she praised Mr. Braun for keeping her daughters engaged in science, describing it as a class that “wasn’t always an interest to them.” “They both spoke with such enthusiasm about your class,” she wrote. “To watch my daughters come home from school
to research and create a lab ‘just because’ was amazing.” Mr. Braun said that that email alone would have been enough. “That would have been an award all on its own,” he said. He easily progressed through the next round, which consisted of writing several essays on his teaching philosophy and community involvement. In his own letter of recommendation, Principal Pasquale DeStefano called Mr. Braun an “extremely devoted” member of the school community. He wrote that in recent years, Mr. Braun founded the East Northport Middle School Bald Tigers, raised over $200,000 for childhood cancer research and collected more than

1,500 pounds of food to support the Long Island Cares pet food drive. After passing the second round, a representative from New York State came to the school to observe Mr. Braun’s classes and interview several of his students, all of whom recommended him wholeheartedly. “Seeing how excited the kids were, it was nice to see everyone support me,” he said. “They were all thrilled to be part of it. All that made it worth it.” Mr. Braun graduated from Northport High School in 1996 and has been teaching at the middle school for 18 years. “I’ve always loved the community,” he said.

MCPL To Host Women’s EXPO The 19th annual Women’s EXPO will be held on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Middle Country Public Library, 101 Eastwood Boulevard, Centereach (located off Middle Country Rd., ¼ mile west of Nicolls Rd.).
