Say What? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am the queen of misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them

has been slightly off is putting it mildly. Pearl Jam? Forget it. Read the lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices

– please, no hate mail from the country lovers – seems to have it right when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

The 2014 Pink Rock Classic golf tournament will take place on Monday, October 6th at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills. The event benefits the Fund for the Uninsured at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. The Fund for the Uninsured was established to provide access to stateof-the-art breast screenings and diagnostic procedures for patients without health insurance. Jean Larsen of Stony Brook, a breast cancer survivor who faced a huge personal debt from battling the disease, came up with the idea of the Pink Rock Classic to help others

in a similar situation. She and her friend and former co-worker Walter Hurney put together the Pink Rock Classic golf tournament. Now in its seventh year, the event has raised more than $420,000 for people in need. The 18-hole outing begins at 11 a.m. with registration and lunch. The shot-gun start begins at 1 p.m. The day includes a cocktail hour followed by a grand buffet dinner and awards ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. The fee for the day is $350 per player or $1,400 per foursome. Paintings Raise Funds On September 10th, about 50 seniors from the Bristal Assisted Living communities on LI, ages 75–95, displayed their paintings at a silent art auction that raised nearly $1,500 to benefit Senior Dreams Come True. One third of the 80 paintings in the show, held at Hofstra University, were sold. Senior Dreams Come True was founded by the Melville-based elder law and estate planning firm Genser Dubow Genser & Cona. The charity grants wishes to lowincome seniors in need on Long Island, ranging from helping someone with every-day financial struggles to granting lifelong wishes. “We were so pleased to team up with the Bristal for this wonderful fundraiser,” says Jennifer Cona, Esq., managing partner of Genser Dubow Genser & Cona. “The art auction engaged the residents by tapping into their creative side and also provided an opportunity for them to help their peers on Long Island who are less fortunate. The money we raised will help us give wishes to more seniors.”

The last wish was given to Anna Castoro, Riverhead, who needed extensive dental work that included several crowns, an extraction and a tooth added to a partial. Anna was thrilled to receive this wish so she can speak more clearly and not be afraid to smile. While the seniors who did the artwork are helping less fortunate seniors, they also benefited by developing their own creative abilities. Esther Teitel, age 95, who grew up in Chicago and now lives in the Bristal in East Northport, studied art in college. Her artwork flourished in her 70s with the help of many teachers. Esther estimates she has created 75 pieces of artwork. The painting sold at the art auction was entitled: “Bride”, painted from The Bride by George Hitchcock. “I love painting especially because it gives me peace of mind,” says Esther. Myra Lerner, age 86, who lives in The Bristal North Hills, painted as a child and is self-taught. Her first oil painting in 50 years entitled “Trees” was sold at the auction.

Myra also does needlepoint, knitting and crocheting. “I paint because I get so completely involved in the process, which gives me tremendous pleasure and happiness,” says Myra. Project Lifesaver On Wednesday, September 10th, the Long Island Chapter of the National Aging in Place Council (NAIPC) made a $1,650 donation in support of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s Project Lifesaver initiative. Project Lifesaver is wristband technology that can be worn by individuals with cognitive impairments who have a tendency to wander. The device emits a signal that County Deputy Sheriffs can track in the event the individual ever wanders off and gets lost. The donation from the

So Far, So Good College is unlike anything I’ve ever gone through. High school was four years of academic grinding, while college has proven to be pretty awesome. The workload isn’t too bad so far, which has allowed me to get involved on campus. I’m on the rugby team, I’ve joined a few clubs, and I’m writing for the school newspaper. College has not been all work and no play. The unfortunate moniker “Villanofun” has proven false, and I’m having the time of my life. I miss home, however. The new friends I’ve made here

are great and all, but nobody could replace my mom, dad and brother. They are the foundation to what will hopefully be my success. My mom and dad are the driving force in my life. I can’t wait until I see them during Parents’ Weekend, because somebody needs to do my laundry! Although I’m just kidding about the laundry, the idea that I miss the little things about home rings true. I miss my bed. I miss my car. I miss my old life. With that being said, I’m really liking the new life which I have formed here.

The kids on my floor are like family to me, and I’ve only been here a month. We are all in this together, and the communal sense of commitment has brought us closer together. I feel as though we know what each of us are going through, so bonds have become strengthened. The guys on my rugby team have been more than friendly as well. We are a team, and during games I can always expect them to have my back. I’m very excited to see what the rest of my four years of college have to offer.

BREAKING GROUND - On September 9th, the Town of Brookhaven broke ground for two new little league ball fields in Selden for use by youth sports organizations, including the Middle Country Youth Association. The new ball field project, which will be completed by the spring of 2015, is the first phase of a future 24 acre athletic complex on the site. The property was purchased by Suffolk County under the new Drinking Water Protection Program for active parkland and transferred to the Town. The site is located behind the Grace Presbyterian Church at 425 Hawkins Road in Selden.

Responding With Honor

REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY - The Town of Islip recently held its annual September 11th Remembrance Ceremony, which took place at Veterans Memorial Park, outside of Town Hall. Members of the Islip Town Board read aloud the names of all Islip residents who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11th. Local volunteer firemen also paid tribute to the first responders who died while trying to rescue those trapped inside the World Trade Center.

“When we think of heroes,” said Carolynn Hansen, principal of the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Premm Learning Center, “we think of their service, resilience, tolerance, reconciliation, and patriotism.” On September 11th, students and staff

recognized retired New York Police Officer John Spano, a local hero and responder. John’s son Andrew attends the Premm Learning Center. Police Officer John Spano was honored. He said, “It was a privilege to be presented an appreciation plaque from my son

Andrew. I was assigned to rescue and recovery at the World Trade Center. I worked for 57 days at the site. Please never forget and always remember the first responders and the people who lost their lives that day.”

Under beautiful bright blue skies, teachers and administrators at West Middle Island Elementary School took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and nominated Charles E. Walters, Coram and Ridge Elementary Schools to take the challenge as well. In a long line of green WMI shirts, teachers took turns dumping buckets of ice water on each

other’s heads concluding with Principal Gretchen Schaentzler and Assistant Principal Elisabeth Finck. “Giving to others or “Service Above Self” is such an important lesson to teach our students,” said Mrs. Schaentzler. “At West, we are always looking for different ways to share this lesson with our students. The ALS Ice Bucket challenge was

a wonderful way for us to show the students how our teachers and staff give of ourselves for a great cause. Teachers and staff made donations while the students cheered us on.” To date, more than $300 has been raised from the challenge. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the ALS Association.

Taking The Challenge

With another school year upon us, we look back at a summer of rejuvenation, recreation and reading. During the summer, the learning never stopped, as patrons of the Connetquot Public Library participated in the 2014 Children and Adult Summer Reading Programs. Over 1,500 patrons participated enjoying all the library has to offer. With summer, came another Suffolk County Battle of the Books, an inter-library competition between teams of teens focused on 8 young adult novels. Participating students are from sixth to ninth grade. This year’s

titles were; The Apothecary by Maile Meloy, Change-Up by John Feinstein, CHOMP by Carl Hiaasen, Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos, Grimm Legacy by Polly Sherman, Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve, Popular Clone by M.E. Castle and Ungifted by Gordon Korman. The Connetquot Clones, coached by Teen Librarian, Angela Breslin, participated in a Mock Battle on July 8th, coming in third place. The Regional Competition of the 18th Annual Suffolk County Battle of the Books, took place at the Javitz Lecture Center, Stony Brook University on Saturday, August 9th and

Monday August 11th. The Connetquot Clones placed fourth in the evening battle session and won the Judges Award for Sportsmanship. This competition, which began in 1997, incorporates a love of reading, teamwork and camaraderie. The Connetquot Public Library offers teens many opportunities to expand their horizons through innovative programming and the opportunity to earn community service. Apple Festival The Town of Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department will host the annual Apple Festival on Saturday, October 4th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at Islip Grange, located at 10 Broadway Avenue in Sayville. In case of inclement weather, a rain date has been set for Sunday, October 5th. Admission is free for all and many activities will be offered at a low-cost.

There will be fun for the whole family with more than 200 different vendors and exhibitors present, as well as a Kid Fun Zone. Families will also be able to go pumpkin picking, participate in arts and crafts and enjoy various apple treats. $1.00 carousel rides are available for children, as well. Live music is also planned with performances by Slang the Band, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and Southband

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $25,000 grant from The Department of Criminal Justice for our consistently outstanding services and commitment to community education and wellness. The check was presented by Senator Dean Skelos to Rosalba Messina, LICADD’s Interim Executive Director and Steve Chassman, LICADD’s Clinical Director. Through these funds, LICADD can continue to expand and enhance the many workshops and programs offered throughout Long Island schools, communities and

businesses. In addition to the agency’s work with screenings, referrals to treatment and family education workshops, LICADD’s Criminal Justice System Alliances implement state-of-theart diagnostic evaluations, recommendations and treatment referral services for county attorneys, criminal courts, probation services and the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles in connection with DWI or other substance disorder offenses. to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. Rare Artifacts Return Whaling artifacts related to the history of Long Island are a fairly rare item today. When they do appear on the market, collectors fight hard to acquire them. Items specifically related to Greenport – one of Long Island’s active whaling ports during the 19th century – are even harder to find. So what to do when a group of items relating to one of Greenport’s most prominent whaling families hits the auction block? Collaborate. “It seemed like a no-brainer,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society, “to try and bring together a couple of groups that together might be able to acquire these items,” he continued. The items in question were a collection of papers, account books, log books, and even a Walrus Tusk relating to the 19th century whaling activities of David Gelston Floyd of Greenport, builder and owner of the wellknown stone mansion, Brecknock Hall. Fleming discovered just by chance that the items were being offered for sale at auction by a Floyd descendant. “I emailed the auction house in New Hampshire about something else and they happened to mention in passing that they had these items coming up – I was stunned.” Fleming

immediately recognized the importance of the items, having just written a history of the Floyd family and Brecknock Hall for the Brecknock Hall Foundation, where Fleming serves on the board. He began talking with some of his contacts at the foundation, along with Peconic Landing, who owns the hall today. “Everyone was very excited, so we arranged a meeting to strategize what we should do, with only a few days before the auction was set to happen,” stated Ted Webb, President of the Brecknock Hall Foundation. “I thought this is an opportunity we should not pass up,” stated Bob Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. In the end, everyone pledged a certain amount of money towards trying to acquire the papers. Additional monies were secured through a donation from the Reichert Family Foundation. The auction itself was a bit harrowing. “I was bidding by phone for the group, and there was a great deal of interest during the sale in the items we wanted,” stated Fleming. Nearly all of the items went quickly past their estimates. But in the end, the group succeeded in getting all the lots they were interested in. Among the more important items acquired were the partial account book of the

whaling ships “Italy” and “Pioneer,” 1844-1852; the account book of the whaling ship “Prudent,” 1856-1859; and the log books of the whale ships “Prudent,” 1856-1859, and “Italy,” 1854-1859, all of which sailed form Greenport during the 1840s and 1850s. “We were very pleased with the result of this effort,” continued Webb. “It just goes to show that while none of us alone could have hoped to acquire these materials and bring them back to the North Fork, together it became possible,” continued Syron. The Items will be jointly owned by the Brecknock Hall Foundation and the Southold Historical Society and will be housed at the Society’s archive in Southold, where they will be made available to researchers. Identity Thieves Can Steal Your Financial Stability

(NAPSI)—All your hard work to become financially stable can unravel if you become a victim of identity theft. Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal information such as your Social Security number, birth date or mother’s maiden name. Many people don’t know they’ve been victimized until a collection agency comes knocking on their door. Identity theft is a growing problem but there are steps you can take to prevent it. • Never give out personal information over the phone, on the Internet or through the mail unless you initiate the transaction or know whom you’re dealing with. • Don’t reveal any personal information before you find out how it will be used and shared with others. When someone requests your

Social Security number, ask if you can provide alternate information. At medical offices, use an identifier that is not your Social Security number. • Ensure the passwords to your credit card, bank, phone and all other online accounts aren’t easily available and can’t easily be guessed. Avoid using obvious information such as your birth date, digits in your Social Security number or your mother’s maiden name. Change your passwords periodically, particularly those associated with financial accounts. • Keep items with personal information in a safe place, such as a locked storage device or password-protected electronic file. Tear up or shred all unnecessary papers containing Social Security numbers, account numbers and birth dates before discarding them so “dumpster divers” can’t

retrieve them. • Protect your mail. Keep your eyes open for bills and statements. If you think one of your statements is missing, quickly call that company to let it know. Take outgoing mail to a postal mailbox or the post office. If your mail suddenly stops, go to the post office. Thieves sometimes submit change of address forms to divert mail to their address. • Check your bank and credit card account activity promptly upon receipt of a written statement.
