MARCHING INTO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR - For the past 17 summers, Connetquot High School has hosted a marching band camp, under the direction of music department staff Greg Johnson, Vincent Malafronte and Jennifer Bay. Due to social distancing guidelines, this year’s camp could not include instruments nor flags, but, nonetheless, more than 100 students spread out across the football field to diligently practice choreography and marching in unison. Potential Indicators of Roof Trouble

• Light: Homeowners with attics in their homes can inspect the ceilings inside the attic for signs of holes or leaks. Light peering through the top of the house indicates a hole or leak, as does stains or streaks on the ceiling. • Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any

that appear to be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced. • Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it off, so homeowners should

keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. • Age: Another indicator of roof trouble may be the age of the roof. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years. Recognizing minor roof damage before it escalates into a larger problem can save homeowners substantial amounts of money.

DIY Projects That Can Conserve Energy Around The House Home renovation projects can pay numerous dividends. Renovations can have a positive effect on resale value, make homes more livable for residents and, in some ways, make homes more affordable. Renovation projects that aim to conserve energy can save homeowners substantial amounts of money. Such projects don’t often require considerable effort or even sizable financial investments, which can make homeowners skeptical as to just how much they can save after completing the project. But the scale of a project may have little to do with how much homeowners will save. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy notes that a relatively effortless task like turning back a thermostat between 7° and 10° F for eight hours per day can save homeowners as much as $83 per year. A more labor-intensive task like planting shade trees saves homeowners an average of between $35 and $119 per year. When looking for ways to conserve energy around the house and save money, homeowners need not necessarily commit to expensive projects. The DOE notes that the following are some energy-saving projects and details what homeowners can expect to save after completing them. While each individual project may not result in jaw-dropping savings, homeowners who follow many of these recommendations may end up saving more than $1,000 per year.

any leaks on heating and cooling ducts. How much can I save? Homeowners who seal uncontrolled air leaks can save between 10 and 20 percent on their annual heating and cooling bills.

Project: Plant Shade Trees What is it? If you plant a deciduous tree between six and eight feel tall near your home, it will begin to shade your windows within a year of being planted. Depending on the species of the tree and the home, the shade tree will begin shading the roof within five to 10 years. The DOE notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce air Project: conditioning costs. Install Exterior Low-E Storm How much can I save? Properly Windows What is it? With regard to home repairs, homeowners may be able to delay some projects until the weather permits or they find room in their budgets. But other areas, including the roof, may demand immediate action. Few homeowners give the roofs of their homes much thought until a problem arises. But learning to recognize potential indicators of roof trouble can help homeowners prevent potentially drastic situations down the road.

Types Of Home Insulation And Where To Install Them

In fact, the ENERGY STAR program overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says homeowners stand to save an average of 15 percent on heating and cooling costs by adding proper insulation. To do so, homeowners can take a crash course in home insulation and find the products that fit their needs. Blanket Batts And Rolls Blanket batts and rolls typically are constructed with fiberglass, so proper safety gear, such as a mask and gloves, is needed when handling them. Installing this type of insulation is relatively easy since the materials are designed to fit the standard width between studs, rafters and floor joists. Loose Fill Loose fill is usually made of fiberglass or cellulose (recycled paper fiber). It is blown or sprayed into place with pneumatic equipment, according to The Home Depot. Loose fill can be ideal for hard-to-reach areas in attics or inside wall cavities. It’s good

for adding insulation to irregularly shaped areas. Since it requires special equipment, this is a job best left to professionals. Sprayed Foam Sprayed foam is just as the name implies, a foam made from polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, cementitious, or other materials that are applied by a spray container. DIYers who need only small applications can use canned product. Large quantities are pressure-sprayed by professionals. Foam Board/Rigid Foam Panels Ideal for unfinished walls, such as basement or foundation walls, floors and ceilings, these are boards of polyurethane or polystyrene. Foam boards tend to reduce energy consumption more effectively than other types of insulation. H o m e o w n e r s considering upgrading their insulation or amending existing insulation should do their homework on the type of insulation that will be most effective for their homes.

Options Abound When Shopping For Home Siding Home improvement projects run the gamut from minor repairs to complete overhauls. Replacing exterior siding is one of the most significant home improvement projects homeowners can undertake. Such a project can give homes a completely new look, which is why choice of siding is such an important decision. Homeowners have many siding options to choose from, and the following guide can help them make the best choice for their homes. Vinyl Siding Vinyl siding is easily maintained and among the more budget-friendly siding options. According to the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor, vinyl siding is made from a PVC plastic that does not rot or flake. Siding professionals note that the technology used to create vinyl siding has changed considerably in recent years, making this option more diverse than traditional vinyl siding. So homeowners turned off by the potentially plastic look of vinyl siding might be surprised at how different modern vinyl siding looks compared to the vinyl siding of yesteryear. Fiber-Cement Siding The home improvement television network HGTV notes that fibercement siding has grown in popularity among homeowners in recent years. This material does not require much maintenance and it’s nonflammable and resistant to termites. HomeAdvisor notes that fiber-cement siding can create the look of wood, stucco or

masonry, making it a versatile option capable of creating various looks. In addition, fiber-cement siding is known for its durability, with some products coming with warranties lasting as long as 50 years. Wood Siding Homeowners have many choices if they prefer wood siding on their homes. Cedar, cypress, fir, pine, and spruce are just a handful of the many wood siding options homeowners can choose from. HomeAdvisor notes that cedar shingle siding offers a natural look that blends well in wooded and waterfront landscapes. Wood clapboard siding is another popular option, though it tends to require more maintenance than cedar shingle siding. Homeowners who want wood siding should discuss their options with an experienced siding professional, as many factors, including the choice of wood, must be considered before making a final decision.

Stone And Stone-Veneer Siding Many homeowners fall in love with the natural appeal of stone, but the price tag, which tends to be costly, may not be as awe-inspiring. HGTV notes that stone can be difficult to add to an existing home, and doing so may drive the price up even further. Stone siding is durable, and there are many options, including solid stone and natural stone cladding, that make this an option capable of providing an array of looks. Stoneveneer siding is less expensive than natural stone and also comes in an array of styles. As is the case with wood, stone siding options are so extensive that homeowners are urged to discuss each one with a siding professional before making their decisions. These are just a handful of the many siding options homeowners can choose from. Siding can give homes a competely new look, making choice of siding a significant decision worthy of careful consideration.

SUFFOLK ZONE 5 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

When thinking about renovating their homes, homeowners may imagine changing wall colors, expanding room sizes or upgrading appliances and fixtures. However, unless people take inventory of the less glamourous components of the home, such as structure, plumbing, heating and cooling, and insulation, other improvements may be for naught. A home insulation project certainly doesn’t offer the wow factor of a kitchen remodel, but insulation serves a vital function in the house that helps keep people comfortable and reduces energy consumption. Insulation is typically placed in areas where air escapes, such as between the stud cavities inside the walls and in the attic, and serves to slow and reduce heat transfer. The U.S. Department of Energy says between 50 and 70 percent of the energy used in homes is for heating and cooling. By improving home insulation, homeowners can make their homes more comfortable, consistent and efficient.

The right tool for the job is essential to working safely and efficiently. This is as true in the workplace as it is in the garden. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin in regards to which tools they need. The following are eight items that can serve as a solid foundation for beginning gardeners.

New York Blood Center Encourages Blood Donors To Schedule Appointments drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted

in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. “The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means encouraging donors to take the extra step of making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these first-

time donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “We’ve always relied on the fall to provide a boost in blood donations from high school and college students hosting drives and this year we know this relief will not be coming.” NYBC began hosting

a limited number of drives again this summer, however they are far from the number of drives per month needed to support area hospitals. NYBC is encouraging eligible donors of all ages to adapt to this new normal by making appointments to visit a one of its 19 donors centers, which have expanded capacity and hours

of operation in order safely accommodate more donors. Blood from volunteer donors is needed every two seconds to help meet the daily transfusion needs of cancer and surgery patients, accident and burn victims, newborns and mothers delivering babies, AIDS and sickle cell anemia patients, and many more. • To make an

New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. St. Jude Walk/Run On Long Island Transforms To Virtual Event In celebration of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, supporters of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® from across the country, including the Long Island community, will be participating in the virtual St. Jude Walk/Run September 26th. This year participants can walk, run and fundraise at their own pace and distance in their

own neighborhoods. In addition, the St. Jude Walk/Run mobile app, is available in the Apple app store and on Google Play, to provide a unique experience to participants that includes a virtual tour of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and some engagement opportunities using augmented reality. Funds raised through

events like this help ensure families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened

Helping You Help Others By Noelle Stanuch

The Charity of The Month for September is:

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

SUFFOLK ZONE 5 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 23, 2020 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

charity code FG-WIBCC20.

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Donations are greatly appreciated and are able to be made in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Lastly, if you would like to volunteer, you can! WIBCC relies on the generous support of volunteers in order to fulfill their mission. They are always looking for people to help with programs, raising funds and other tasks. Please email info@wibcc.org for more information. For more information on how to get involved, how to purchase a ribbon or if you believe you can benefit from their services, please contact Dawn Dahill at 631.669.7770 or visit www.wibcc.org.

If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email Noelle@SouthBaysNeighbor.com for consideration.

Shopping For Auto Insurance

When shopping for auto insurance, the Insurance Information Institute recommends that drivers investigate a company’s reputation and stability before purchasing a policy. Rating companies like AM Best (www.ambest.com) and Standard & Poor’s (www.standardandpoors. com/ratings) vet insurance companies in terms of their financial stability. Government organizations may be able to provide potential policyholders with information regarding the history of consumer complaints filed against insurance providers. That history, coupled with information regarding a given firm’s financial stability, can give drivers a picture of insurance providers and whether they’re trustworthy or simply the most affordable option on the market.

Juliana is the founder and creator of LoveBugs of Kindness, a project that reminders others to appreciate the small things. “Because ladybugs are small and beautiful,” said Juliana. In the past, proceeds from the sales from LoveBugs have been donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“We chose those two organizations because I lost a family friend to breast cancer, and Juliana has raised money for St. Jude’s in the past,” said mom Jaime.

Through an increase of orders and an outpouring of support from the community, Juliana has begun creating LoveBugs of Kindness with different color ladybugs representing different organizations. For the month of September, Juliana made red, white, and blue ladybugs with all proceeds donated to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Recently, Juliana was featured as a “Hero of the Day” on Fox News Good Morning, NY.

A convoy of vintage military armored cars delivered cases of Mallomars, the historic 107- year old dark chocolate-coated marshmallow and graham cookie to Stop & Shop. Because of the enormous

demand by Mallomar devotees who are forced to wait an entire year for the seasonal treat to arrive, Stop & Shop arranged for safe and secure transport. The cookies were offloaded from historic World War Two armored military

vehicles by WW II Army reenactors. Mallomars were first produced in 1913, in Hoboken, N.J., and the greater Long Island - New York City metropolitan area still accounts for more than 70 percent of

all international Mallomar consumption. A century ago, the cookies were baked and shipped only during cooler months because

they might melt. While temperature-controlled transport is now the norm, Mallomar continues the tradition, selling between September to April, which

While drive-in theaters have been staging a comeback across the country, Starfish Junction has positioned itself as one of the leaders here on Long Island, owning the biggest pop-up drive-in screen, 52feet, available locally. Future showings will include movies perfect for date nights, family fun nights, girl’s night out, sing-alongs,

and classic films. There are a limited number of tickets available for each showing. Tickets are on sale now ($40 per carload for early shows, $30 per carload for late night shows). The special Batman Double Feature tickets are $55 per carload. All tickets must be purchased online in advance at the MOVIE LOT website to adhere to the promise of contactless processing. Ticketholders are permitted to bring their own food and snacks to enjoy during the show. Attendees may also consider Smith

Haven Mall restaurants for curbside pick up before filing into the lot for the movie. Portable restrooms will be available for use. The Smith Haven Mall is located in Lake Grove, NY. The showings will take place rain or shine, all ticket sales are final. Tickets and info at www.MovieLotDriveIn.com.
