On September 7th, the Village of Islandia held a special ceremony on the grounds of Village Hall to recognize two of its residents, Victor Montanez and Raul Jimenez Cintron, for their ongoing volunteer work in the village and in helping our nation’s veterans. Since 2009, Mr. Falcón has served Longwood High School as a Spanish teacher, as well as a Late Afternoon Program (L.A.P.) teacher. Throughout his tenure at the high school, he served as Class of 2018 advisor, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) coach, athletic academic supervisor

and served on the high school’s Technology Committee and Response To Intervention Academic Committee. Prior to his tenure at Longwood, he taught Spanish at William Floyd High School. “It is a privilege and an honor to serve the Longwood community in an administrative capacity,” said Mr. Falcón. “I am looking forward to working alongside the teachers, administrators, and staff to continue to build on what Longwood has accomplished for many years; educate children to their fullest potential.” Mr. Falcón received his bachelor’s degree in Spanish from the University at Albany, his master’s degree in Teaching from Stony Brook University and earned his school building leader certification from St. John’s University.

At the September 8th, 2016 meeting, the Board of Education appointed Carlos Falcón as the new assistant principal at Longwood Middle School, effective October 1st, 2016. Mr. Falcón replaces Dr. Tracy Adams who was recently appointed as Longwood Middle School principal.

Connetquot High School junior Mackenize Cole continues to make headlines in the volleyball world, where her exceptional talents on the court landed her one of only 24 training spots on the U.S. Youth National

Team. Cole was one of only two student-athletes from the east coast selected for this honor this summer. Cole, who has been playing volleyball since a young age, remains on the direct pipeline for one day playing in the Olympic Games. Last year, Cole, along with her sister Taylor, were members of the school’s New York State Championship volleyball team. Whether playing for the CHS varsity team or representing the country, Cole is generally competing in the position of defensive libero. Libero’s are within constant interaction with

Connetquot Remembers the ball, and support the structure of the team as a whole. “I definitely credit all of my accomplishments to my parents and my teammates,” she said. “My parents are my coaches and my mentors, and I just want to stay humble and hungry for continued athletic success as I get better and better.” Cole has committed herself to Duke University and will attend in the fall of 2018. IN MEMORY OF - Dawnwood Middle School’s grounds in the Middle Country Central School District were filled with more than 100 American flags in memory of the fallen heroes and victims of the attacks on September 11th, 2001. The entire school building, including students and staff wore red, white and blue to show their patriotism and all participated in a moment of silence.

Staff and students alike throughout the Connetquot Central School District commemorated those who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001. Buildings throughout the district paid their respects toward the thousands of men and women who are no longer with us today. Students at Connetquot’s Idle Hour Elementary School gathered in their classrooms on Sept. 9 to listen to the day’s announcements which included the remembrance

of the lives lost on Sept. 11th, 2001. Introduced by Idle Hour Principal Sandra Rubin, Mrs. Farrell’s firstgrade students proudly sang “I’m Proud to be American” over the public address system. Mrs. Rubin spoke briefly to the students about the tragedy of 9/11 and how heroes rose to the occasion and helped to save so many lives on that tragic day. Additionally, Susan White, principal of John Pearl Elementary School, joined students and staff

in celebrating Patriot Day on September 12th. John Pearl students and staff, dressed in their colorful red, white and blue outfits, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang patriotic songs. Students of OakdaleBohemia Middle School also participated in a brief ceremony on September 12th as they gathered around the American flag to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Getting Started After boarding traditional yellow school buses, students in the Connetquot Central School District arrived at their respective buildings eager to begin the 2016-2017 school year on September

7th. Surrounded by supportive faculty and staff, students quickly acclimated to their new surroundings and were in high spirits as they started a new chapter of their

educational journey. From the incoming kindergarten classes to the members of Connetquot High School’s Class of 2017, district students made a smooth transition to the new year.

The Longwood Board of Education, central administration, students and staff attended a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 1st to celebrate the opening of a new stateof-the art facility that will provide a simulated work environment for high school students in the Alternate Learning Program (ALP). Students will receive vocational training in food service, hospitality, office skills and more. “Our goal is to create a simulated work environment where our students become employees and teachers become supervisors,” said Director of Secondary Special Education Jennifer McCarthy. “Our students

are provided with an opportunity to apply and generalize their work skills here at the LCC, as well as develop the skills necessary for employment in real-world jobs. The result will be work-based learning and employment within our own Longwood community.” Utilizing a vacant school district building, the LCC has been completed renovated and now features an industrial kitchen, hospitality room, mock office environment and meeting room.

Looking for Perfection By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong

adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile. I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reflecting upon moments and savoring them. Sure, it is equally important to be present in the moment and experience it fully; but pictures have the ability to preserve an instant in a way that memory alone cannot always fulfill. Hence, my albums full of fun and silliness, of candid

moments and scenic shores. Of friends, both the lifelong variety and those who may only make a guest appearance along the way. And of course, Buddy, my very special finned friend, who holds a unique place in my heart the way that only a pet can. He may be contained in a bowl, but his personality shines through, and the connection is just as real as those established with friends of the “Human” variety. Month after month, I celebrate his “birthday,” the anniversary of his time in my home, along with the standard holidays that we have been fortunate to share with him. Friends may come and go, and the memories may fade over time; but in the many heartbeats in between, perfection can be found. You need only know where to look.

Bellone stressed that qualified Suffolk County residents must purchase a home within the consortium area, they will have 90 days from the date of issuance of the Purchase Certificate, to submit a fully executed Contract of Sale to the Community Development Office or 300 days to submit a fully executed contract of sale if the first time home buyer is purchasing a new construction home. The consortium includes all of Suffolk County, excluding the Towns of Babylon and Islip. Comprehensive details of the eligibility criteria, income guidelines, and other elements of the program are available on the County Web site. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda Adams for receiving her doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from St. John’s University. Committed to higher education, Dr. Adams worked over the course of the past three years on her dissertation, titled “Sixth Grade Educational Placement: A Retrospective Analysis of Achievement Through Commencement.” Through this study, Dr. Adams examined the achievement of students through multiple lenses as they moved through school systems to determine if academic success was related to the configuration of the schools. Included in those lenses were the district’s enrollment numbers, tax cap implications and available resources. “As a lifelong learner, I firmly believe that dedicating myself

to receiving this advanced degree has strengthened my role as an administrator,” she said. “Due to my education, I’ve learned how to approach curriculum, planning and instructional practices through a variety of lens. There is not just one factor that influences a child’s education so we, as educators, need to be able to view the whole picture and assess contributing factors while guiding our students on the path to success.” Dr. Adams obtained her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Stony Brook University in 1989, and a Master of Arts in Liberal Sciences from the same institution in 1993. Additionally, she was awarded with an Administrative Certification from the College of New Rochelle in 1996. Prior to joining the Connetquot Central School District, Dr. Adams served as the deputy superintendent chief informational officer for the Center Moriches Union Free School District, where she oversaw the curriculum, instruction and professional development for the entire district. She also worked within the Deer Park School District, beginning with the role of director of science and technology,

which resulted in Dr. Adams implementing the Science 21 Program in grades K-5 and the creation of new courses. This position led to the appointment of principal of Abraham Lincoln School. Dystonia is a neurological disorder that causes repeated muscle contractions that result in abnormal, repetitive movements or postures. Despite being the third most common movement disorder, there seems to be very little known about Dystonia.

The Middle Country Central School District recently announced several new and exciting programs to engage the students throughout the Centereach and Selden communities for the 20162017 school year. The new programs - including specialized music, art and math curriculum for kindergarten students as well as extra physics classes and the introduction of a Capstone Project - are made possible by the District’s strategic budgeting practices and careful financial planning. The academic improvements are meant to prepare students for life at the next level. “At Middle Country, we are dedicated to educating ‘the whole child.’ We are proud of the many programs we have put in place this year that will help provide students with the resources to

excel in the classroom and in the community,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Schools. “These brand new classroom offerings will challenge our students to think critically and prepare them for successful futures beyond the classroom.” During the first day of school, students throughout the District took advantage of the many new opportunities provided by the District. Kindergarten students from Unity Drive Pre-K/ Kindergarten Center participated in the new art and music classes as well as their math literacy program. These initiatives are intended to introduce students to essential Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) concepts. Other students are also experiencing the excitement of new programs as fifth grade

students throughout the District embarked on a newly introduced Capstone Project. The Capstone Project is a two-semester independent research project that spans fifth through twelfth grade. Designated time for research is granted to seventh and eighth grade students and the eighth graders will now be able to participate in physics classes. Outside of the classroom, other exciting news is underway, such as completed projects from the District’s 2015 Bond Referendum. At the beginning of this school year students and staff benefitted from the completion of roof replacements, security vestibules, high school track resurfacing, the installation of Smartboards in the classrooms and new buses and two-student vans.

In anticipation of St. John the Baptist’s 50th anniversary St. John’s has received the approval of the Diocese of Rockville Centre and the support of their alumni and benefactors to proceed with a grand Library renovation to be completed in 2016. This facility will keep St. John’s on the cutting edge of advancements in education and will benefit the entire St. John’s community with its support for all academic and co-curricular programs. The new library will be a 21st century, stateof-the-art learning hub. It will include a Video and TV Production MAC lab, a flex classroom, a college preparatory scientific research center, a conference room, media presentation space with digital archiving and 3D printing capability. It will be a completely wireless space, allowing students full access to WIFI. With an abundance of new and improved resources, students will be able to work collaboratively, EXCITING CHANGES - Students at Unity Drive Pre-K/Kindergarten Center walk pursue academic interests into the school building on Middle Country Central School District’s first day of school. in order to learn how to conduct college level

research projects. St. John’s has partnered with the Library Science department and interns from SJU in order to learn and integrate coding and meta-data analysis, web design and information technology. Mr. Robert Crossan, Director of Advancement and Alumni Relations stated, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the incredible support of our parents, alumni, and friends who have pulled together to make so many great things happen here at St. John’s. VICTIMS REMEMBERED - The bell tolled 178 times, once for each name read aloud at a ceremony this morning marking the 15th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks. Standing in front of the county’s 9/11 memorial in Hauppauge, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory joined County Executive Steve Bellone and other legislators in remembering the Suffolk residents who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center 15 years ago. After each of the county’s 178 victims’ names was read aloud, the sound of a bell echoed across the garden, where many had gathered to honor the victims and pray for their families.

On Wednesday, September 7th at the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Sarah Anker and Legislator Kate Browning honored Nancy NowaskiRoesler for her altruism and community service. Cabin air filters clean the incoming air, removing allergens, as long as they’re replaced regularly. “A dirty or clogged cabin air filter can cause contaminants to become so concentrated in the cabin that passengers actually breathe in more fumes and particles when riding in the car than when walking down the street,” explained Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Replacing the cabin air filter is a simple way for you and your passengers to breathe easier while driving.” In addition to trapping pollen, bacteria, dust and exhaust gases, the cabin air filter prevents leaves, bugs and other debris from entering the heating, ventilating and

air-conditioning (HVAC) system. A restricted cabin air filter can mean musty odors in the vehicle and impair airflow in the HVAC system, possibly causing interior heating and cooling problems. Over time, the heater and air conditioner may also become damaged by corrosion. Cabin air filters should not be cleaned and reinstalled. Instead, they should be replaced every 12,000 to 15,000 miles, or per the owner’s manual. Most filters are accessible through a panel in the HVAC housing, which may be under the hood or in the interior of the car. An automotive service technician can locate the cabin filter and replace it according to the vehicle’s

The Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University is establishing a scholarship fund to honor former Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon. Dillon was one of the longest-serving district attorneys in the country, with a tenure that lasted for more than three decades. During that time, he transformed the office into a professional prosecutor’s office, hiring the brightest, most ethical and most dedicated assistant district attorneys. The Denis E. Dillon Endowed Scholarship will be awarded annually to an entering Hofstra Law student with strong academic credentials, with a priority given to students interested in working as a prosecutor. Dillon not only served as Nassau’s chief law enforcement officer but also worked under Robert Kennedy in the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, handling segregation cases in the South, and later headed up the Organized Crime Strike Force for the Eastern District of New York. “I am happy that we are establishing this scholarship at Hofstra Law to honor Denis Dillon,” said Hofstra Law Dean Eric Lane. “His respect for and understanding of the extraordinary power

The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance where family members can meet. Discuss the plan with everyone in the

household and practice it until everyone can escape in less than two minutes. Conduct practice drills at least twice a year. 2. Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms halve your risk of dying in a home fire. Put them on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms. Test the alarms monthly and change the batteries when needed. Never disable a smoke alarm. Teach children what an alarm sounds like and what to do if they hear one.
