Dress For Success On September 25, the Town of Brookhaven Women’s Services Division will present the second session of “Career EDGE.” This program is designed to help unemployed and under-employed women gain professional skills, accelerate their job search and build confidence through weekly training sessions, one-on-one career coaching and networking in a supportive environment. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available). Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The recipient of the wish must be 65 years of age or older (or a permanent resident of an eldercare facility), a legal US citizen, have an annual income of less than 200% of current federal government published poverty level income, or be unable to grant your own wish (not including financial reasons), have a history of giving back to others, be cognitively and physically capable of communicating and

Welcoming New Students On Aug. 27, both the Ronkonkoma and OakdaleBohemia middle schools welcomed incoming sixth graders and their parents for the annual “walkthrough” event in an effort to allow the students to familiarize themselves with their new educational surroundings. Upon entering their respective buildings, students were granted the
opportunity to tour the school, find their classrooms and get accustomed to their new lockers. This served as a wonderful opportunity for the students to reconnect with neighborhood friends and meet their new classmates coming from the surrounding elementary schools. Both OakdaleBohemia Middle School
Principal Susanne Bailey and Ronkonkoma Middle School Acting Principal Joseph Licato wished the students and their families an enjoyable remainder of the summer, and encouraged parents to keep the lines of communication open with any questions they may have prior to the start of school.
Free Emergency Preparedness Training On Friday, September 27th at 11 a.m., there will be a FREE Emergency Preparedness Training at the Longwood Public Library (800 Middle Country Road, Middle Island) hosted by Senator Ken LaValle, Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano, County Executive Bellone, and Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker. The program will give residents of
all ages the tools and resources they need to prepare for disasters and respond accordingly. Free Emergency Starter Kits that include first aid kits, goggles, gloves, and more, will be given to each household upon successful completion of the training. “As we begin to enter hurricane season, it is important that all residents are prepared for emergency
situations,” said Legislator Anker. “I encourage residents to participate in this emergency training program to learn how to respond accordingly to a multitude of situations.” All participants must register in advance. School Welcomes Kindergartners
RESCUE RECEIVES $10,000 GRANT -Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that Last Hope Animal Rescue has received a $10,000 grant from the Alex and Elisabeth Lewyt Charitable Trust (matched in part by Last Hope) to target the epidemic number of feral cats in the Town of Brookhaven this fall. Vouchers will be issued to residents caring for feral cats inhabiting the Town by completing the mandatory agreement on the organization’s website at www.lasthopeanimalrescue.org/fix-a-feral/. Cats will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped for free at four participating veterinarians. The program will cease on December 15. While the first day of school for Connetquot Central School District students isn’t until Thursday, Sept. 5, incoming kindergartners at the Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently familiarized themselves with their surroundings and made some new friends during the annual kindergarten playdate event. Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Principal Lisa Farrell welcomed the parents, grandparents and students to this annual event and
took the young learners on a tour of their new classrooms, after they spent some time playing together on the school’s playground. After introducing herself to the students, Mrs. Farrell read “The Little Rabbit Who Liked to Say Moo” to each class, and provided refreshing snacks along with an opportunity to work on an arts and crafts project. These districtwide kindergarten playdates are offered in an effort to allow students to forge new friendships and create
a welcoming environment so they’ll be able to look forward to the first day of school. Mrs. Farrell expressed her gratitude toward the members of the Helen B. Duffield PTA who assisted with organizing the fun morning event. “Our PTA always does such a nice job welcoming our kindergartners to the school,” she said. The district wishes best of luck to these students comprising of Connetquot High School’s graduating class of 2032.

Staff and students from Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School commemorated those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001 during a special Patriot Day celebration held in front of the school’s War Memorial. Prior to the
assembly, John Pearl Elementary School Principal Susan White thanked the staff and students for attending and reminded them of the importance of celebrating Patriot Day on an annual basis. Fifth grade students from Annamarie Damore’s and Jeanne
Cardone’s classes then led the attendees in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, dressed in their colorful red, white and blue outfits. Additionally, the students sang patriotic songs, including the John Pearl School song and “Nothing More” by The Alternate Routes.
