The Freedom School, held for six weeks throughout July and August, has the potential to change the course of students’ lives and the lives of their families. A goal of the program is for the “scholars” to see the relationship between success in reading and good grades.

Crunched By Tech By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In an age where technology has overtaken society, it is only natural to pause periodically and wonder, at what cost? These days, most everything can be communicated via text, various messenger apps, social networks and emoticons, with little reserved for good oldfashioned person-to-person contact. As the masses jump on the latest smartphones and tablets the moment they’re unveiled, it is hard not to think how did we manage to exist before? Personally, I did not own a cell phone until the later college years, if even then. Prior to that, it was

payphones and asking the teacher for a pass to the Main Office to call home in an emergency. Nowadays, walk into any elementary school and smartphones are just as common a trend as the latest sneakers and accessories. What’s wrong with this picture? Plenty. First off, no eight year-old needs a smartphone. An old, hand-me-down standard cell phone in case of emergencies? Perhaps. And once you move on to middle school and high school, the potential for cheating, texting during class and surfing the web instead of paying attention to the lesson at hand skyrockets. I don’t care

what disciplinary actions are set in place; the integrity of the classroom immediately declines with each cell phone that enters. This is not to say that those in college or the workforce are any better equipped to balance the technology they “have to have” with a little thing called reality. No, we are just as likely to send 47 text messages rather than have a phone conversation, to use a cute little smiley face in favor of typing an entire word, to keep in touch via Facebook rather than schedule a lunch date... That said, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my newly pre-ordered iPhone 6 :)

Patrick Russell, an Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) cadet at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Okla., has graduated from the Leader Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) at Fort Knox, Ky. The 29 days of training provide the best possible professional training and evaluation for all cadets in the aspects of military life, administration and logistical support. Although continued military training and

leadership development is included in the curriculum, the primary focus of the course is to develop and evaluate each cadet’s officer potential by exercising the cadet’s intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and physical stamina. The cadet command assesses each cadet’s performance and progress in officer traits, qualities and professionalism while attending the course. Cadets usually attend LDAC between their junior

and senior years of college, and they must complete the course to qualify for commissioning. Upon successful completion of the course, the ROTC program, and graduation from college, cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, Army National Guard, or Army Reserve. Russell is the son of Richard and Elizabeth Russell of Lake Grove. He is a 2011 graduate of St. Anthony High School, South Huntington.

Inductees To Be Honored The Office of Alumni Relations and Department of Athletics at St. Joseph’s College (SJC) are pleased to announce the Seventh Annual Golden Eagle Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Sunday, September 28th, at 11 a.m. The event will take place in the McGann Conference Center, located on the College’s Long Island Campus in Patchogue. This year’s celebrated class of honorees are Kristin Bihary Lievre ’03, Jennifer DeGennaro Iurio ’95, Bryan Knipfing ’06 and the 2008 Women’s Softball and Men’s Cross Country teams. “Being inducted into your alma mater’s Hall of Fame is an honor reserved for truly talented individuals,” said Shantey Hill, director of athletics and recreation at SJC’s Long Island Campus. “This year’s inductees should be proud of their athletic accomplishments, and

the records they have set stand today as examples for current and future student-athletes to follow. These individuals are true illustrations of Golden Eagle pride and we are delighted to induct them into the Hall of Fame family.” Established in 2008, the Golden Eagle Athletic Hall of Fame honors former athletes, coaches and friends of the College who have contributed significantly to the athletic program and continue to exemplify the principles of sportsmanship and integrity through their

contributions and achievements in their respective communities and professions. Fall Fun At The Game Farm Continued From 6 stop somewhere for some family-friendly entertainment while traveling to or coming from the East End of Long Island during the autumn season. Adults and children alike can see all of the Game Farm’s animals, for as long as weather permits. These include red kangaroos, kinkajous, cougars, Barbados sheep, peacocks, the giraffe and the only lemurs born and bred on Long Island. The Long Island Game Farm also has various breeds of monkeys, buffalo, colorful parrots, zebras, aoudads, camels, ostrich, alligators and much more. A Big Year Each year, as fall approaches, I catch myself reﬂecting upon the past year. 2014 was a huge one for me, as it marked the beginning of the next chapter in my academic career. This year, I started at Villanova University. From what I can tell, Villanova is the right place for me. I’ve already gotten pretty involved, and I feel very welcome here. From the renowned orientation process, I was able to garner an understanding of the qualities that Villanova was founded upon - Caritas, Veritas, Unitas. These Latin words translate to mean Charity, Truth and Unity.

For nearly two centuries, Villanova has been producing bright minds using those three values. I’m proud to say that I have the opportunity to experience everything this university has to offer. As important as the transition to school was for me, this year wasn’t all about college. Over the summer, I strengthened bonds with friends and family. I’ve never felt tighter with my coworkers, because they finally stopped viewing me as a kid. My years on Fire Island have afforded me many things, including new employment opportunities and a unique outlook on life.

A few months ago, I graduated high school. This was a big marker in my life. My grandfather passed away in August. He was very important to me, and I think about him all the time. I went to the National Championships for Rowing this year. As the culmination of four years of hard work, it was something I will be forever proud of. On a less personal note, my community grew. We welcomed new neighbors, businesses and opportunities. In just a few short months, my life has changed dramatically. I guess you can say it has been a big year.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students received free backpacks from UJA-Federation of New York through its Supplies for Success initiative that provides school supplies for children in need. Supplies for Success is in its 13th year on Long Island and recently expanded to the East end. Lead Social Worker Jen Farnum-Weber of ESBOCES was the driving force behind getting 200 backpacks for ESBOCES students. She worked

collaboratively with UJAFederation and social workers throughout ESBOCES to determine need and appropriate distribution. Program Administrator for Student Support Services Liz Melichar traveled out to Bridgehampton to pick up the 200 backpacks slated for ESBOCES students in grades K-12. The backpacks were filled with appropriate items for grade levels K-2, 3-5, and 6-12. She said, “We want our students to have a great

start in their educational career.” UJA-Federation Chair Mindy Richenstein cited the mission statement of UJA-FED organization that every child should start school on a level playing field because education is the recognized pathway out of poverty. UJA-Federation of New York is an organization known for its philanthropy and Supplies for Success. This year Supplies for Success filled and distributed over 9,000 backpacks.

Bradstock A Success On August 30th-31st, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck hosted Bradstock XXI, a two-day music festival featuring live music from the best musical acts performing Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz. A singer/songwriter stage entertained the attendees with 30 acoustic acts and, on Sunday, 14 poets read from their works on the Poetry Porch. Approximately 750 people attended the event. It was the fourth consecutive year that the camp hosted Bradstock. Part of the ticket sales will go to benefit Camp PaQua-Tuck. Over the past four years, Bradstock has raised over $30,000 for the camp. Among the bands who performed included Cassandra House, Gerry McKevney, Soundswell, Jack’s Waterfall, Miles to Dayton, Jerry McDonald, Ed Travers, Shecky and the Twangtones, David Amram,

Funkin’A, Jelly Band, Falco Brothers and The Electrix. All of the musicians and poets donated their time, energy and talent to the festival in support of the various not-for-profits that benefit from Bradstock. The event was formed by The Circle of Chiefs. What began as a simple jam session in the backyard of Brad Ringhouse, a Bayport resident, became an all-day music festival. All of the many workers who spend countless hours organizing and running the event are volunteers. Bradstock has called five locations home over the past 21 years but feels strongly that Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is by far the best venue. The Bradstock motto is, “A good time for a good cause.” Helping the Camp achieve its mission of “Summer is for everyone” has truly energized all of Bradstock’s workers and attendees. The music festival has a special connection to the camp as the late

Kevin “K.C.” Cowan - who performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing in October 2011 - was the brother-in-law of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Ambulance Member Honored

MOMENT OF SILENCE - Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Town Council lead a Moment of Silence to pay respect to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in New York City, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pennsylvania on September 11th, 2001. During the ceremony, which was held at the Town Hall 9/11 Memorial, Reverend Beresford Adams from the Faith Baptist Church offered a special prayer in memory of all the lives that were lost and a bell was struck five times to signal the traditional “back to base” in honor of the firefighters, police and emergency service personnel who died at the World Trade Center. The 9/11 Memorial is located behind Town Hall near the fitness path.

Thirty fourth-grade students from Longwood School District were among 50 children, once again, provided the opportunity to participate in Stony Brook’s Freedom School, now in its second year. The Freedom School, held for six weeks throughout July and August, has the potential to change the course of students’ lives and the lives of their families. A goal of the program is for the “scholars,” as the children in the program are called, to see the relationship between success in reading and good grades, a college education and greater opportunities in the job market. Joshua Nauman, Longwood alumnus and third year student at Stony Brook University, fills with pride when he speaks of his role as teacher and mentor to the Longwood students. “I get so much more from this experience than the kids,” Joshua said. “In only six weeks, I see such growth in their selfesteem. It’s amazing to watch how far they have come with literacy and their love of learning. It’s like they come full circle, and I’m so incredibly proud to be working with them.” Freedom Schools is a Children’s Defense Fund national program established in 1992 under the leadership of CDF President and children’s advocate Marian Wright Edelman. Last year, the Children’s Defense Fund

After acquiring a 12 Lead EKG and confirming with the physician, it was confirmed that the patient was actively having a heart attack. Jennifer knew to begin intravenous access and administered emergency medication to help stabilize the patient’s

vital signs. She stayed and cared for the patient while being transported to the hospital. It was due to her quick reaction and vital knowledge that the patient was able to get to the hospital quickly, be treated, and ultimately, make a full recovery. Jennifer has been an inspiration to all members of the Community Ambulance Company, along with all those within our community.

Innovative Lessons When Longwood School District’s eighth grade technology students returned to class on Wednesday, September 3rd, they were greeted by one of the district’s newest staff members, a two-foottall, blue and white robot named Henry. Henry is the district’s latest teaching tool; a voice activated, educational robot that is designed to motivate and excite children about innovative careers in science, technology, engineering and math, otherwise known as STEM.

O’Neill. “While we are able to assist many of our homeless clients through our Client Benefit programs, the Stand Up for the Homeless event is intended to educate and serve the ineligible or recalcitrant visible homeless with informational referrals, community based resources, and items utilized while homeless.
