The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. Fall is a great time to tackle projects around the house. The weather each fall allows homeowners to make improvements to their homes’ exteriors without worrying about extreme heat or cold, while interior projects like painting are made easier because homeowners can open the windows to allow for proper ventilation. Fall also marks a great time to prepare for upcoming projects that can make winter work that much easier. For example, fall is a great time to take stock of your gutters so you can address any issues before leaves begin to fall or the first snowstorm touches down. Compromised gutters can contribute to water issues in basements and adversely affect a home’s foundation if not addressed immediately, so it behooves homeowners to learn the signs that gutters are in need of repair or replacement. • Gutters hanging off the home: Gutters were once installed predominantly with spikes. Winter is coming, and for millions of people who reside in areas of the country that see the mercury drop considerably between December and March, that means prioritizing staying warm. Get Ahead of Chimney Repair This Season Woodburning fireplaces or fuel stoves can add warmth and ambiance to a home. These appliances are particularly coveted in the cooler months when people spend more time indoors. Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the flue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are doit-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Replacement fireplace dampers should be snug and not have any gaps, states Vertical Chimney Care. • Conduct a visual inspection of the chimney to check for any cracks or spalling. Spalling is the wearing

away of masonry due to water, weather and time. If enough of the material erodes, that erosion can adversely affect the structural integrity of the chimney. Some repairs can be made by patching up cracks or replacing missing bricks. Chimney tuckpointing is the process of repairing mortar.

Four MCCSD Students Earn Medals of Honor for Distinguished Youth Awards Four Newfield High School students in the Middle Country Central School District were recently recognized by Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore for their commitment to civic engagement and being well-rounded, altruistic young individuals encouraging positive youth development in their community. What is Rosh Hashanah? Rosh Hashanah is an important holiday on the Jewish calendar. According to the Jewish National Fund, Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish New Year and is a celebration of the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve. Adherents to the Jewish faith wish each other a good, sweet year ahead on Rosh Hashanah, a day that is steeped in tradition. One such tradition is the sounding of the shofar, which the JNF notes is representative of the trumpet blast that sounded the coronation of kings. The sounding of the shofar also symbolizes a call to repentance. The shofar itself is a ram’s horn that calls to mind the story

of the Blinding of Isaac, an event that occurred on Rosh Hashanah and involved a ram taking Isaac’s place as an offering to God. Of course, no celebration of Rosh Hashanah, which takes place over two days, is complete without a festive meal. Foods served during Rosh Hashanah celebrations tend to be sweet and are meant to symbolize hopes for an enjoyable year ahead. In addition, the JNF says it is customary on Rosh Hashanah to eat foods with names that allude to blessing and prosperity. In 2020, Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of Friday, September 18 and ends on the evening of Sunday, September 20.

CONNETQUOT PPE INITIATIVE - The Connetquot Public Library is privileged to begin its own initiative by creating 3D printed face shields and no-touch tools for our members, upon request and free of charge. Our primary objective with this initiative is to limit the exposure of COVID-19 for our library members and staff. As per the CDC, face shields are not recommended for use as a substitute for cloth face coverings. The no-touch tool, with its curved design, allows the user to open doors, in addition, it may be used on touch screens, for ATMs, time clocks, etc. without physical contact. No-touch tools can be printed in under one hour, and face shields can take up to several hours to produce and assemble. These valuable and essential items are printed on the library’s Prusa MK35 3D printer located in the Learning Commons. Items are usually completed within one week and may be picked up at the Front Desk or via Curbside. Limit one of each per member, while supplies last. Under the direction of Nicole Parisi Eberle, Makerspace Coordinator of the Learning Commons, approximately 200 requests for PPE have been fulfilled. “I saw the incredible work that David Ecker of Stony Brook University and the Suffolk Cooperative System were doing, and wanted to contribute to our library community during this pandemic. What better way to use our existing equipment, technology, and resources, than to provide someone with PPE so that they may feel safer when returning to work, school, etc.” Parisi Eberle said. Technology has bridged the communication gap during this time, helping to keep us connected to family and friends, keeping us educated and informed, and a lifeline to our community. Using this technology to help keep our frontline workers and now, our members safe is an opportunity to say thank you. We began this unknown journey together, and with “innovation, preparation, and collaboration,” we will continue this journey with gratitude and appreciation, always together.

As Connetquot Public Library introduced its Learning Commons in the Fall of 2019, it provided a primary location for the library’s makerspace equipment, a dynamic and functional area for teens, and supplementary space for meetings and classes. Since its inception, the space has not only served the advancement of education and enrichment but it is also where community service initiatives are born. From teens earning community service hours to using the library’s 3D printer, innovation, and the human spirit unite. In March, as the COVID-19 pandemic began, libraries closed their doors. The world changed, and libraries accepted this mantle of change as well. As we watched our frontline healthcare workers heroically care for others, we united in caring for them. Connetquot Public Library, in collaboration with other Suffolk County libraries, donated its 3D printer to the Suffolk Cooperative Library System for an initiative creating Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
