By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been days, and still no sign of my human. No light on in the kitchen. No food pellet delivery at dinnertime. No – dare I say it – bath time. Nothing. Where did she go? Alone in my bowl, I swim my solitary laps, counting down the hours, days, weeks… it must be weeks by now. Just me and my plant (which, by the way, is starting to look pretty tasty at this point). I should’ve known something was up when I found a few extra flakes in my bowl right after the last human sighting. And the suitcase… what was that for? Come to think of it, I heard something about “vacation,” whatever that

is, and then this giant bettashaped vitamin was placed in my bowl with promises of food coming shortly. When? It’s already been at least a month. Time tends to fast forward when you live in a bowl. But, wait… here it is – a flake. And another. Where did they come from? No human in sight, but this little vitamin seems to be melting into food! Oh thank goodness! She didn’t forget about me after all. I wonder if she’ll ever be back? {826 Days Later…} I hear a noise! The front door… the light… MY HUMAN HAS RETURNED! Oh boy, oh boy! If I had longer fins, I’d give her the biggest hug ever! Oh, and here comes the good food,

The 9th Annual Pink Rock Classic golf tournament will take place Monday, October 5th, at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills. The annual golf tournament benefits the Fund for Uninsured at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. The Fund for Uninsured was established to provide access to state-of-the-art breast screenings and diagnostic procedures for patients without health insurance. Jean Larsen of Stony Brook, a breast cancer survivor who faced a huge personal debt from battling the disease, came up with the idea of the Pink Rock Classic to help others in a similar situation. She and her friend and

Under its former name Ladies Auxiliary VFW, membership within the organization was offered exclusively to female spouses and family members of those eligible for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The gender-specific eligibility requirement remained for more than 100 years until July 20th, 2015, when delegates to the VFW’s 116th National Convention in Pittsburgh voted to amend the dated by-law to extend the same membership opportunity to eligible males. Appropriately, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW has changed its official name to the VFW Auxiliary. “It’s an exciting time to be a member of the Auxiliary,” said National President Francisca Guilford. “Women comprise nearly twenty percent of our nation’s military, and this change allows all spouses, fathers, grandfathers, sons, grandsons and brothers to serve others in honor of their veteran.” Currently, the Auxiliary has more than 465,000 members, a number that is now expected to sharply increase over the next year. Its members represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, several foreign locations including Germany, Guam and Panama, and have made an impact in local communities around the globe. Last year alone, its members worked to provide $4.6 million dollars in monetary aid to veterans, active duty military and their families, and volunteered nearly 800,000 hours in VA Medical Centers, hospitals, nursing and veterans’ homes. BLOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS - Legislator Leslie Kennedy went out strong in her first blood drive of the fall season with the Ronkonkoma Street Fair. Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield, Edith L. Slocum, Sycamore Avenue, and Cherokee Street elementary schools recently welcomed new kindergarten students to participate in “Kindergarten Playdates.”

Each school’s principal hosted the playdates to help students in the graduating class of 2029 and their parents acquaint themselves with the school, meet the staff, make new friends, work on crafts and share a snack outside of normal school hours.

The event helped ease anxieties surrounding the start of the school year, and principals, teachers, staff and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) members were on hand to introduce themselves and answer questions.

A delight to observe in flight... hovering like a helicopter, Able to change direction in an instance. Zooming at times at 35 miles per hour, Darting up and down and even backward. As nymphs, hatched from eggs, tiny wingless creatures wiggle forth. Thriving on worms, mosquito larvae and tadpoles. Hiding in weeds or mud, they are aquatic, Living in fresh water, ponds and streams.

Over 50 Fair Set The Over 50 Fair, now in its sixth year, finds new ways to connect with Baby Boomers and Seniors each year. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. This year’s event, on Sunday, September 27th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Melville Marriott, introduces its newest addition, a Singles Lounge. “Every year, our single guests request a way to meet other singles. Seven in Heaven Singles Events will be facilitating this interaction in our new Singles Lounge, which will have music, a seating area, and icebreaker games several times during the

day, such as Kings and Queens,” explained East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director. As in the past, the Over 50 Fair will also have 90 exhibitors and 30 speakers including local and national celebrities. Chef Jonathan of Fox TV’s hit show MasterChef Season 6, its most recent season, will be preparing California Style Calamari Salad and doing a “meet and greet.” Not to be outdone, Chef AJ of Fox TV’s MasterChef Junior Season 3, the most recent season, will be cooking Quesadillas for all to try. Chef AJ, age 11,

was a huge hit at April’s All Kids Fair where she prepared waffles with fresh whipped cream and fruit. The newly crowned Ms. New York Senior America 2015, CJ Marie, will be in attendance, along with her counterparts from 2013 and 2014. Edith Jason, one of the oldest yoga teachers on Long Island, will be teaching a yoga class. Mrs. Jason, age 80, has been teaching yoga since 1986 and currently teaches several times a week at Winthrop Hospital. Mark Brier of Laughs at the Library and Howard Newman of Jokesercise, where one can get a

little exercise along with enjoying a comedy show, will be on hand to entertain at separate performances. In addition, there will be a group psychic reading, reiki class, iPad tips, saving for retirement, travel, and health topics such as sleep apnea, menopause, and podiatry. This event has been building a loyal following among the Boomer Generation during the five years of its existence due to its consistent presentation of a variety of classes and products they find appealing. The free opportunities this year include valet parking, waxing, and

health screenings such as video otoscope and blood pressure screenings. Gemma Kodumal, who attends the Over 50 Fair annually, said of last year’s event, “I was able to attend one class, Genomic Testing, and we all raved about it. We need to come earlier next time to be able to avail ourselves of other seminars.” The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network), a local non-profit that helps Long Island’s needy, is once again asking people to bring non-perishable food and cash donations to exchange for raffle tickets for valuable prizes. The Over 50 Fair is
