Helping Hand Rescue Mission www.helpinghandsrescuemission.org
Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-profit organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give. They are so excited to be hosting their first Community Share Day on Saturday, September 18th with the Huntington Assembly of God! This will be a fun and engaging new way for their kindhearted, caring donors to connect with the families that they serve in their beautiful Huntington Station community. How does it work? You register online for a time slot. Then you neatly pack your car with the items you would like to share with the community, such as clothing, toys, household items, unexpired nonperishable food and any other items in good/new condition. Clothing must not be ripped, torn, or stained, missing buttons, or broken zippers. If you would like to give gift cards to families you may, but they ask that no cash is given. Also, no large electronics or furniture please. You can sign up for a two-hour time slot, where they will have the cars set up “trunk-or-treat” style in the parking lot. Community members will be able to walk around to the different cars and browse. You must stay by your
request.
car during your time slot and they ask that you stay until your time slot is over (or all of your donations have been distributed). There will be no charge for donating or receiving items at the event and HHRM reserves the right to review all items on the day of the event. Tax receipts will be provided for all donations upon
This is an excellent opportunity for families with children to come and serve the community together. They will serve hot dogs, chips and soda to all who attend and they truly hope that it will be an enjoyable time for both our donors and community members! They are still in need of participants! Rain date is September 25th. If you are interested in volunteering with HHRM, there is a new opportunity available! The organization is looking for volunteers to help at the mission with their distributions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tasks include sorting, folding, hanging on racks, rolling racks in and out of the building, helping with pantry bags on occasion and being available to help people find items for their families. Bilingual is bonus but not necessary please contact Kimberly at kimberlygambino@ hhrm.org for more information. Connetquot High School’s senior parking lot became a bright-colored canvas on Aug. 18 as seniors personalized their parking spaces during the school’s inaugural Senior Paint Day. Carrying paint, rollers, brushes, stencils and design sheets, students mapped out and created their designs with the help of family and friends. Student Government President Zachary Palazzotto said Senior Paint Day’s goal was “to showcase class spirit, creativity and positivity” during the start of the 2021-2022 school year.
For the price of $30, legally licensed participants purchased and chose a parking spot to use for the school year. They submitted their designs for approval prior to the event and before purchasing discounted supplies at Long Island Hardware in Bohemia. Zachary noted there will be a second Senior Paint Day in the fall for seniors who have not acquired their license by the start of the semester. Senior Savannah Catera painted her rendition of a bright sunset because, she said, “it’s one of my favorite things.” Isabelle
Andres rendered a Captain America Shield with the help of Sophia Aebisher because she likes adventurous characters. Julianna Cicero (Class of 2020) assisted senior Joseph Moulton with painting “Sponge Bob’s” Bold and Brash because, Sophia explained, “he has an amazing sense of humor.” Stencils of a spaceship and a cow were strategically placed in the design of Evan Mistler’s parking space. When asked about his choice of theme, a cow being lifted by a spaceship, he answered, “why not?”

Connetquot Student Recognized At National Wheelchair Basketball Association Championship
Connetquot Central School District student Emma D’Antonio, a fourth grader at John Pearl Elementary School, recently scored recognition at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Championships in Kansas this summer. Her team, the New York Rolling Fury, placed third in the annual national competition. Additionally, Emma was selected as an Academic High Achiever during the tournament’s award presentations. John Pearl Elementary School Principal Susan White said the community is quite proud of Emma’s summer achievement
and congratulated her teammates and proud family members on Emma’s athletic accomplishment. The NWBA is one of the largest and longeststanding disabled sports organizations worldwide. Founded in 1949, the NWBA’s goal has been to provide individuals with the opportunity to play and learn wheelchair basketball. The organization is responsible for growing and developing wheelchair basketball in the United States and the selection and training of the Paralympic and ParaPanAm Games teams, as well as major international competitions. The U.S.
Olympic Committee’s Paralympic Division and the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation recognize the NWBA as the governing body for the United States. The NWBA resides in 42 states and boasts 3,000 members and more than 225 teams. Emma does not limit her athletic pursuits to wheelchair basketball. She also participates in sled ice hockey, wheelchair tennis and wheelchair racing. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates Emma on this outstanding athletic achievement.

presented the district with the Champions of Change Award. The district received the award for Aviah’s authorship of her antibullying book, “Be You. Be Cool. Be Kind.”

Connetquot High School varsity football fans came out in droves to witness the first challenge of the 2021 football season on September 3rd. First year head coach Michael Konsevich and his staff welcomed division I Lindenhurst High School for a scrimmage on the practice field while work was being completed on the school’s football field and running track. A larger, and more experienced Lindenhurst team seemed to be surprised by Connetquot’s energy and aggressiveness early in the scrimmage. Both teams played hard in this first matchup, and both coaches took the time to play and evaluate all their players as they prepared for the first official game of the season. Connetquot graduated 20 seniors from last year’s team, but will work with returning veterans and an impressive number of sophomore up from last year’s successful JV team. The veterans will be led by seniors Matt Gomez and Nick Lamantia who were recently named to NEWSDAY’S top 100 Long Island football student-athletes. The Argyle Theatre (Mark and Dylan Perlman, Managing Partners; Evan Pappas, Artistic Director), presents the hit Broadway musical Cabaret with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff, based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood. Performances begin Friday, September 17th for a limited engagement through Sunday afternoon, October 24th at The Argyle Theatre (34 West Main Street, Babylon, Long Island). Cabaret is presented through special arrangement with Concord Theatricals. Directed by Evan Pappas, with choreography by Sara Brians and music direction by Jonathan Brenner, the cast will feature Dana Costello as Sally Bowles, Jon Peterson as The Emcee, and Andy Tighe as Cliff Bradshaw, with Fred Frabotta as Herr Schultz, Brian Owen as Ernst Ludwig, Suzanne Grodner as Fräulein Schneider, and Lilly Tobin as Fräulein Kost, as well as Alexis Semevolos and Conor Stepnowski. Mark and Dylan Perlman, Argyle Managing Partners, shared “We are thrilled to reopen The Argyle’s theatrical season and close out The Argyle’s second season with the multiple Tony award winning classic Cabaret.” They went on to say, “Come join us at the Kit Kat Club in Berlin in 1931 where patrons search for escape while the seeds of intolerance are fomenting. Be captivated in a time and place where nothing is certain except for one’s dreams.” In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920’s draws to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff Bradsaw, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken by English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. First presented in 1966, the ground-breaking musical Cabaret won an impressive 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, which then culminated into a smashing Oscar Winning film in 1972 winning 8 Oscars. Hold On To That Balloon! PSEG Long Island cautions that metallic balloons can be hazardous
PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they
get loose and come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium should be secured to weights that prevent them
from floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an overhead power line. Report it by contacting PSEG Long Island at 800-490-0075 so a specially trained crew can safely address the issue. Suffolk County Council (BSA) and the Ronkonkoma Rotary Club presents the “Top Shooter Fundraiser” on Sunday, September 26 from 10:00am – 2:00pm at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp (1774 Sound Ave, Calverton, NY 11933) at a cost of $50 Per Shooter and $40 per Registered Scout. All proceeds help benefit the Scouts and programs of the Suffolk County Council. Top Shooter Fundraiser is open to Suffolk County community and everyone 13 years old and older can participate to help support the SCCBSA.
Said Taliesin Powell, Matinecock District Executive and event coordinator, ““Due to the overwhelming success of last year, we decided to hold another Top Shooter Fundraiser. And this year has only gotten better. There is a lot more to do and unique prizes to win. This event is for anybody that wants to support the scouts. This year, as a result of the restrictions of Covid last year, our Trap Shooting event has morphed into a Shooting Day at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. Instead of Shotguns, we will be shooting rifle,
archery and action archery. The day will be filled with Good Food and Fun!! The opportunity to participate is available for both shooters and sponsors. All shooters must be at least 13 years old. Social distancing will be mandatory, as will masks.” The fee of $50 per person or $40 per Registered Scout includes Breakfast and a BBQ Lunch in front of our brand Andrew McMorris Lodge . All equipment will be provided (no outside equipment allowed) with multiple rounds of rifle and archery. There will be a prize for top 3 scores in
each area as well as a prize for Top 3 Overall Combined Scores. There is a brand new action archery event which combines trap shooting with archery where you can test your aim by shooting a moving target with a bow and arrow. Also available are Action Archery, Tomahawk Throwing, Cornhole, and tours of Baiting Hollow Scout Camp.
There are several Sponsorship Opportunities at the event. Consider a small business sponsorship, perhaps bring a team down to shoot, coming down with your son or brother or friend to shoot.
