A Family Franchise Expands Its Brand

Kaufman Enterprises is a family-run, awardwinning McDonald’s franchise which owns and operates sixteen McDonald’s restaurants across Long Island. As part of a far-reaching effort to elevate customers’ experience, McDonald’s is testing a new kind of restaurant at one of these sixteen locations, 655 Fulton Street in Farmingdale, which had its grand opening on May 26th. This followed the premiere unveiling at their Medford restaurant. The new model features interactive kiosks, tableside service and a brand-new design aesthetic.

This innovative approach has been implemented in 30 prototype restaurants across the New York-Tri State region so far, as a result of customerled efforts to align the brand with evolving tastes and preferences. The in-store kiosks allow customers to tailor the menu to their own tastes with an assortment of ingredients, including a choice of bread, cheeses, sauces and toppings. These items are then made to order and are served tableside by McDonald’s staff. The more traditional menu items are still available as well, displayed on digital menu boards behind the counter. Mwaffak Kanjee, General Manager and Vice President of McDonald’s New York Metro Region, stated that this new program has garnered widespread positive feedback so far from both the customers and those employees being trained at these two Long Island locations. While visiting the Farmingdale restaurant, it was apparent that the customers enjoyed the added convenience of being able to customize their order using the new menu items and sit

down with their families to wait for it, rather than having to stand in line. The employees exuded a friendly, positive attitude and seemed genuinely happy with this new opportunity for growth presented by the company. Founded in 1960 by Leon Weil and Irv Klein, the first of their McDonald’s locations opened in East Northport. After Weil’s retirement, Klein expanded the business to include four additional restaurants by 1971. Six years later, Klein’s son-in-law, Jonah Kaufman, joined the team as the company’s first Director of Operations. The following year, Jonah became an owner/operator, resulting in the creation the Klein-Kaufman Corporation. The Klein-Kaufman Corporation grew immensely throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. It earned several outstanding restaurant awards, including the prestigious “Golden Arch” Award for outstanding restaurant operations and contributions to the McDonald’s corporation. In 1996, Klein retired, leaving full ownership of the restaurants to Kaufman, who formed Kaufman Enterprises.

In 2005, Jonah continued to expand the business by bringing on his son, Josh. At first, Josh’s main role was the Director of Operations. Together, Josh and Jonah grew their business, culminating in ownership of sixteen restaurants on Long Island, making the company one of the largest McDonald’s organizations in the United States. Today, Josh, 36, is the majority owner of eleven of the sixteen restaurants. Irv Klein is now 86 years old, living in West Palm Beach, Florida, and is thrilled to see where his family has taken the business he began more than half a century ago.

as reference librarian. Ms. Margino comes to Farmingdale’s Greenley Library from the New York Public Library, where she worked in the division of U.S. and local history, and genealogy. Previous to that she worked in the libraries at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue and the Comsewogue Public Library in Port Jefferson Station. Ms. Margino holds a Master’s in Library and Information Science from St. John’s University, and a

BS in Criminal Justice and Sociology from Adelphi University. She also has teaching experience, having taught classes in genealogy, information literacy and Pinterest at the libraries she worked at prior to joining Farmingdale. Ms. Margino also holds several honors, including “Best Blogger” at the New York Public Library, and the Dewey Scholarship from the New York Library Association.

Superintendent to Retire

After forty-four years in education - thirty-nine of which have been in Sayville - Superintendent of Sayville Schools Dr. Walter Schartner announced he would be retiring at the end of the 2016-2017 academic year. Dr. Schartner

delivered his news during the first Superintendent’s Conference Day held on the day that officially opens the new school year for returning staff. During his welcome back address, Dr. Schartner first expressed his excitement

about many positive initiatives expected to enhance the education of Sayville’s students within the upcoming school year. After listing the highlights, Dr. Schartner transitioned to the next important announcement. “This is my thirty-ninth opening of a school year in Sayville. I feel it important to inform you that it will be my last. I informed the Board of Education last week that I intend to retire at the end of this school year. I have been blessed to work with the extraordinary team of people that are the Sayville Board of Education, faculty and staff. The support of the community has been humbling over the thirtynine years, allowing me the opportunity to help educate their children. My Summer Slumber Buddy here, checking in on behalf of my Human, who has just returned from one of those “vacation” outings I detest so much. You would think, after over 18 months of residence, I would have earned the right to tag along on a trip; but alas, Buddy the Betta was abandoned yet again, left to my own devices. Don’t get me wrong, the solitude is nice on occasion. No Human faces pressed up against the glass making fishy faces, no incessant tapping on the counter to get my attention, no bath times to contend with… but eventually, a fish does become lonely. Every morning, I would wake from my slumber expecting to be greeted with the usual love and adoration – and breakfast, of course. But nothing. Days passed, and all I found was a measly dissolving chalk-like thing with flakes embedded in it. At first, I thought it was a pillow; but eventually, I realized this was the best option on the menu for me for the time being. Speaking of bizarre sleeping

choices, it seems that every time my Human overhauls the tank to clean my gravel and my beloved plant, she never puts things quite back where she found them. Gone are my cozy nooks to snuggle in; replaced instead by mounds of pebbles. This has forced me to explore other options, among them, the top of the filter, where one strong current can send me sailing to a spot of rest just below the water line. Comfy indeed. Of course, when my Human forgets to replenish my water from time to time, I find myself hanging off the side, seemingly in a state of unrest. But not to worry, I can sleep just about anywhere, in any position. That includes laying on a leaf, wrapped around the filter tube, or just about vertical, face pressed against the gravel. Just turn my light off and “Do Not Disturb” – a fish needs his beauty rest, especially one as lovely as me. The last time I had nestled in for the night – or morning, as it were – I was rudely awakened by calls of “bath time for Buddy!”

Being the stubborn sort, I wrapped my fins firmly around the filter tube and refused to budge, gleefully watching as my Human tried to nudge me out of my corner with the back end of a spoon. Only when she began to lift the filter out with me on top of it did I realize that this was a losing battle. Little did I know that this particular bath was in preparation for the vacation I was not to be invited on. Talk about adding insult to injury. On a somewhat positive note, my Human did leave the light on for me, since I seem to flit around with more ease when my tank is illuminated. Better yet, when she returned, I was rewarded with “bonus” flakes for being such a good boy while she was gone – you know, not getting sucked into the filter or anything. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. Legislator Leslie Kennedy marked the oncoming end of summer at the Nesconset Gazebo this evening, enjoying covers of popular bands such as the Beatles and Monkees with fellow Nesconset and Smithtown residents. Hosted by the W.S. Commerdinger Jr. Preservation Society, the Beatles Under the Stars concert provided locals a chance to relax and socialize with each other and featured the Mostly Moptops, a New York Times-featured band known for its 60’s, 70’s and 80’s music tributes. All the proceeds from the raffles went to funding the W.S. Commerdinger Jr. Preservation Society, and the preservation of Civil

War Captain McCormick’s house on their property. “The Commerdinger P r e s e r v a t i o n Society stewards the Commerdinger County Park. We are restoring the 1810 farmhouse in the Park to become a museum of local history. This history of the Parkland and farmhouse includes the Native American Lake Ronkonkoma meeting place, a Civil War Captain’s summer residence and Walter Commerdinger Jr.’s Estate. The Preservation Society thanks Legislature Kennedy for her support in obtaining Grants for our projects and the R.D.L. Gardiner Foundation for their support of the restoration project,” said Paul Albert, Chairman of the W.S. Commerdinger

Jr. Preservation Society board. This concert was an excellent opportunity for the residents of Nesconset and the surrounding area to enjoy the later days of summer while giving back to the noble cause of preserving the rich local history. “Summer is the time for beaches and road trips and camping trips,” the Legislator remarked, “but sometimes it’s just nice to sit back, unwind and enjoy the music. Thanks to The Commerdinger Preservation Society for putting together this wonderful concert and working hard to preserve local history.” The Legislator concluded by expressing the hopes that everyone enjoyed the evening.

EAGLE SCOUT HONORED - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently honored Jack Edward Manzolillo of Troop 153 upon his ascension to the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in the Boy Scouts organization. To achieve this rank, Mr. Manzolillo helped refurbish certain features at St. Patrick’s Church in Bay Shore, including the renovation of two informational signs that are of benefit to the public. Councilman Flotteron thanked Mr. Manzolillo for all of his hard work, and wished him well in the years to come.

Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner joined with the Mount Sinai Senior Citizens Club to recognize “centenarian” Beatrice Caravella at her 100th birthday celebration on Tuesday, September 6th. Beatrice was born Beatrice Mercatante on September 9th, 1916 in Brooklyn to parents who emigrated from Sicily. She met her husband, Fred, while attending church and together they had two children, Marilyn and Richard. Beatrice and

Fred were instrumental in spearheading a Pentecostal Church in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. They lived in Richmond Hill and Franklin Square before retiring to Miller Place. Beatrice was widowed in 1985 after 41 years of marriage. Beatrice is an avid reader, and in retirement happily volunteered her time and service in hospitals, nursing homes, churches, and to help those less fortunate than herself. Today she has four grandchildren and

four great grandchildren. She still lives in her own home and was thrilled to be celebrate this milestone birthday with her family and friends. The Mount Sinai Senior Citizen Club celebrated Beatrice’s centennial birthday with coffee and cake at Brookhaven’s Rose Caracappa Senior Center. Supervisor Romaine and Councilwoman Bonner presented her with a proclamation declaring September 9th, 2016, as Beatrice Caravella day in the Town of Brookhaven.
