On Sunday, August 27th, Brookhaven Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright helped draw the sweepstake winners at the Greek Festival in Port Jefferson. The 56th annual Festival, or ‘Glendi’ in Greek, was held on the grounds of the Greek Orthodox Church on Sheep Pasture Road. Hundreds attended, enjoying Greek food, live Greek music and dancing, games and carnival rides for the kids. Music and traditional dance enriched sight and
sound. Entertainment was provided by Asteri Entertainment and the Rythmos Hellenic Dancers. For weeks leading up to the fest, raffles for big ticket prizes are sold to local hopefuls. This year a 2017 Mercedes Benz GLC 300 W4 was first prize! Others included a Bose Home Theater system, Xbox One, laptop computer, cash and gift cards and more. Just 4,999 tickets are sold, and if you took part, chances very good that you would be a winner. “I’m honored to be a part
of the fun at the festival again! This is one of the most anticipated annual events in our community,” said Councilwoman Cartright. “Many thanks go to the church community, participants, and to the sponsors for these fabulous prizes,” stated the Councilwoman. After collecting her 1000th pint of blood at her Office BBQ blood drive, Legislator Kennedy keeps at it with the collection of 46 more pints of blood. At the Ronkonkoma Street Fair, Kennedy, along with Legislator Muratore, and their teams had two blood buses ready to collect blood from street fair attendees. Blood, which is always important, has become more important in the
wake of Hurricane Harvey. Now more than ever blood is needed to help those affected by this disaster. As always two Mets tickets will be sent to each of the donors who presented to donate. Not only did Legislator Kennedy facilitate this blood drive, but she also opened an informational table for the community, which provided information on many pressing issues and how to get help, as well as
government resources. “I am immensely thankful for all the folks who came out to donate blood in subpar weather,” said Legislator Kennedy. “Thanks to the donors lives will be saved. I also want to thank New York Blood Services, the Lake Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce, as well as all of those who volunteered to help today.”

Mercy Medical Center is pleased to sponsor Stepping On, a falls prevention class for active older adults that helps people at risk for falling. The 7-week class is free of charge and will be held at Mercy in the CIJ conference area, beginning Wednesday, September 27th, from 1 to 3 p.m. Classes will be held every Wednesday through November 8th, 2017. Stepping On covers improving balance and strength, home modifications, community safety, vision, medication review, safe footwear and sleep habits. The course is designed specifically for people who: 1) are at risk of falling, 2) have a fear of falling or 3) have fallen one or more times. Workshops are facilitated by trained instructors in order to provide a safe and positive learning experience. Classes are highly participative, with mutual support and success building participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health behaviors, reduce their risk of falls and maintain active and fulfilling lives. Incoming Students Both Ronkonkoma and Oakdale-Bohemia middle schools recently welcomed incoming sixthgraders and their families to visit the school for an orientation session prior to the start of the 2017-2018 school year. After informative introductions from OBMS Principal Sue Bailey and RMS Principal Charles Morea, students tried out their lockers, met some new friends and toured the building while following their class schedule.
RONKONKOMA STREET FAIR - Legislator Tom Muratore, along with other community leaders and elected officials attended the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce’s annual Street Fair, held each year on Hawkins Avenue. A day that promised gloomy weather didn’t deter the vendors and attendees from partaking in the festivities. The street was lined with booths offering delicious foods, clothing, jewelry and other goods and services. Live music and dancers entertained the crowd. Legislator Muratore’s table provided useful literature pertaining to county government.
Sachem Staff Gathers The Sachem Central School District began a new tradition on September 5th, as the entire faculty and staff from all 15 buildings gathered for an inspirational Superintendent’s Conference Day at Sachem High School North. A sea of red Sachem apparel blanketed the bleachers of the High School North football field as more than 1,000 staff members listened to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham address the crowd. Dr. Graham began by thanking all members of the faculty
and custodial and security staff, whose tireless efforts make the success of the district possible. Following Dr. Graham’s opening comments, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Kristin Capel-Eden honored a group of educators and support staff who have completed more than 30 years of service to the district. Each honoree crossed the stage to cheers from their colleagues as they accepted their certificate of recognition. Dr. Graham continued his presentation with four short stories, each
of them highlighting the importance of creating a deep connection with students. Drawing from a personal experience with his fourth-grade teacher, he illustrated the impact that one educator can have on a student’s time in school and encouraged the professionals before him to “take pride in your work, take pride in your students and always remember that we are Sachem.” After the presentation, faculty and staff attended various staff development activities throughout the district.

Lindenhurst High School ~ 2003 On the day of September 11th, it began like all the others, By mid-afternoon, tragedy struck, and all men became brothers. When the planes hit and lives were lost, it was a shot through the heart, But patriotism took control and everyone did their part. It seemed like a horrible movie, all the fire, dust and smoke, It was reality just the same, when America began to hope. Innocent passengers and heroic firefighters lost their lives, Women lost their husbands and grown men lost their wives. When it occurred, no one chose to believe it was true, But every American began to bleed Red, White and Blue. America grew stronger from this tragic day, to aid the ones who suffer, America is a country we live for, we die for, because we love her. Hearts and courage were plainly shown by all the volunteers, To do what they could to eliminate all of peoples’ fears. Firefighters valiantly fought to save the lives of some, The fact that America grew together, this war is already won.
It’s not just a name, it’s not just land, it’s not why we are here, America is the air we breathe; it’s something we hold dear. The pride for our country came out that month, to deal with the unbelievable, And the fact that everyone banded together seemed so inconceivable. Girls became women and boys became men, to take on this emotional fight, The gift of freedom cannot be stopped; it’s our most amiable right. On the day of September 11th, the statement of glory and hope was cited, After this tragedy, the States of America truly became United.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan When We Were Young There’s something about this time of year, even being 17-plus years removed from school, that still resonates with a certain degree of excitement. First days, new supplies in hand, a fashionable outfit all picked out the night before… just seeing snapshots of my friends’ children brings back a flood of memories from when I was a child, excitedly comparing schedules with my own classmates, mapping out what routes to take to class, planning who to eat lunch with the important things. How much has changed in the decades since. I know plenty of us would be thrilled to return to those simpler times, to when our biggest concern was having pool first period, or how to manage to squeeze in a stop at our lockers in between each class so as not to have to lug piles of books around the entire day. Even the workload seems trivial by comparison. We were competing for grades; but really, the entire structure was but a microcosm of the stresses of
daily “adult” life. It’s funny how we think we have it all figured out when we’re younger; no one can possibly offer us any insight that doesn’t match our own. We skate from one year to the next, until we eventually have to decide what to do with the rest of our lives. And even then, we have that cushion of college, the ultimate in years spent “finding” yourself. And really, all these years later, has any of us truly found what we thought we were looking for back then? I recall one teacher in high school who constantly warned us that, as many “friends” as we had collected through those formative years, there would come a day when less than a handful would remain. “Two, maybe three, tops,” he would say. “Just you wait and see.” Impossible, we all scoffed, as we remained confident that all those whom we spent the majority of classes and extracurricular activities with would always be by our side.

It wasn’t immediate. In fact, there were many friendships I maintained throughout college and even beyond. But, with each passing year, the list grew smaller. This is not to say that we would be incapable of picking up where we left off on any given day; but it’s not the same. Gone are the days of constantly talking on the phone, making plans to catch up, replaced instead by an occasional text message, a vague reference to “grabbing dinner” one of these days - and there it generally remains. If anything, this realization only confirms that I should have fully appreciated those school days as they were unfolding. How young and innocent we were, how little we knew of what was to come in the years that have since elapsed… how precious that time truly was. Here’s to all those students living those years as we speak. May they always appreciate them the way I have now learned to in hindsight.

The Long Island Fight for Charity, the nation’s only all-volunteer charity boxing event, will host a Boxer Matchup and Inaugural Chips for Charity Poker Tournament on Tuesday, October 3rd. The event will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with “Cards in the Air” for the Poker Tournament at 7 p.m., at SIMPLAY, Multi-Sport Simulator Center, 180 Commerce Dr., Hauppauge. Volunteer boxers will learn who their opponents will be at the 14th Main Event, which will be held in November. A crowd of over 200 friends, family members, fans, sponsors and committee members are expected to gather at this exciting program and network event. The boxers, after months of preparation, fundraising and training, are anxious to know who they will face in the ring at the 14th Main Event, which will be held at the Hilton Long

He interned in the Development Department on Parker’s Golf Classic, following up with sponsors and working on promoting the event. Darnel enjoyed Career Day because he spoke with Parker’s Finance team and learned how finance plays a large role in health care. He’s interested in a hospitality career, and hopes to run a hotel one day! Anandita Guha came to Parker through the Volunteer Department and volunteered with the Therapeutic Recreation Department. She spent time with the patients and residents, getting to know them, what activities they liked, talked with them, and most importantly listened to them. As an accomplished student of
dance, she also performed “Bollywood Style” dancing for patients at Parker, which they really enjoyed! She is a student at Kew Forest High School in Kew Gardens, and plans to become an anesthesiologist. Joy Nath is a Bronx High School student and came to Parker through the 1199SIEU program. Through the 1199SIEU program, Joy received guidance with resume writing, cover letters, interview skills, etc. He’ll include his stint in Parker’s gift shop on his resume. This recent high school graduate will attend The Macaulay Honors College at Lehman College in the Bronx, for a career in nursing. Parker was proud to help nurture the careers of these fine young people. Building Future Leaders Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation was proud to once again host their student summer volunteer program. Parker partners with New York City’s “Ladders for Leaders” (LFL) program, as well as 1199SEIU’s Youth Mentoring Program (YMP), NYC’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) and local high schools. Partnering with these and other programs fosters professional mentoring and development, as well as encourages good civic-mindedness. Most importantly, these programs provide many satisfying opportunities for high school and collegeaged youth to explore career possibilities, become accustomed to the world of work environment, and interact with people of other generations, cultures and backgrounds. Parker Jewish Institute is proud to support these programs and is honored to be part of the mentoring process
for these young adults, whose presence brings joy to Parker’s elderly patients and residents. Through the sponsorship of NYC’s Department of Youth & Community Development, LFL provides paid internships to City youth between the ages of 16 and 22. These interns are carefully vetted. “All our applicants are evaluated based on their academic performance, responses to essay questions and résumé quality,” said Danielle DeAngelis, LMSW, Youth Employment Program Manager at Samuel Field and Central Queens YM & YWHA (her administrative staff finds internships and runs the program). “Ladders For Leaders helps high school and college students with paid internships, so they can get experience in different fields while earning money,” Danielle said. Selected applicants undertake 20-30 hours of pre-employment training to teach essential
workplace readiness skills and professional etiquette. Participants then have an opportunity to interview for summer internships at many partners, such as Maimonides Medical Center, Morgan Stanley, New York Hospital Cornell, New York University Medical Center, Queens Chamber of Commerce and Parker Jewish Institute. Employer partners make final selections on hiring for paid internships. Parker’s President and CEO, Michael N. Rosenblut, commented on how impressed he was to meet such a talented and mature group of young adults, who truly were enthusiastic and engaging with the residents and patients, as well as with the team members. Parker hosted 130 interns and volunteers this summer. “The students had the opportunity to experience interning with professional staff in departments that included public affairs, finance, development, nutrition, social work,
nursing, pharmacy, medicine, therapeutic recreation, physical and occupational therapy, etc. Some interacted with patients and residents, bringing joy and delight to their days,” Rosenblut said. Also, through the 1199SEIU Youth Mentoring Program, union member’s children can apply for paid internships through the 1199SEIU Child Care Fund. Through their program, 15 youth were volunteers at Parker this summer. He added that through their various partners, Parker has hundreds of interns as volunteers throughout the year. Parker was one of Ladders For Leaders first health care partners. Pratima Bhagwandin, Director of Volunteers, coordinates Parker’s Career Day and the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. Sachem Welcomes The Sachem Central School District welcomed 52 new educators during its new teacher orientation on August 31st. The daylong program began with formal introductions of important district personnel followed by a look into
the district’s vision, led by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham. The eager new educators were then instructed on the instructional technology found within the district’s classrooms and ways in which to incorporate tools such as Smart Boards and
