Sachem Welcomes New Faculty On August 28th, the Sachem Central School District hosted an informative new teacher orientation program for approximately 50 teachers and teaching assistants. To begin the day-long program, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham greeted the new educators and outlined the vision of the district. The educators were then introduced to district administration and members of the Board of Education. As the orientation continued,

the new Sachem educators reviewed expectations for student achievement, instructional focus areas and classroom management techniques. The orientation program

allowed the educators to familiarize themselves with district policies. and procedures, while engaging in informative conversations with fellow faculty members and staff.

Making the Shift “Take the ﬁrst step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the ﬁrst step.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Once upon a time I believed “circumstances” was a dirty word, and for one to allow themselves to be carried by outside circumstances was akin to falling short of personal resolve. Through the gift of time and perspective, “I Can See Clearly Now,” as the late Dr. Wayne Dyer famously titled one of his forty best-selling books. We may find ourselves in a situation where it becomes impossible to remain in comfortable familiarity. The universe not-so-subtly nudges us in a different direction. This new and unfamiliar path could be related to finances, health, relationship, profession or geographical location. There is a divine wisdom and design to this universe; it’s the same wisdom that created you. Sometimes it’s okay to let it take the wheel and go along for the ride. Four weeks ago, I was sitting under two gently swaying palm trees on my Florida patio,

overlooking a crystal-clear blue lake and watching a family of ducks congregating on the grass in my yard before toddling into the water for their afternoon swim. A moment later, I received a call that would change the direction of my life. I was offered the job of Managing Editor for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, in my native, Long Island, New York. After enthusiastically accepting the job and hanging up the phone, the reality set in that I would have to break the news to my son that we were relocating back to New York. We’d be leaving our Florida home, his school, and packing up our belongings to report to this new job in less than a week. The enormity of it all had me suddenly frozen. After sorting through the emotional and logistical details, I reminded myself of the very spiritual principals I’d been studying for a decade. In my book, Journaling Fame: a memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, and in my speaking engagements, the biggest takeaway I offer is that for a human life to be happy, healthy and whole, you must

believe in something greater than yourself. I don’t care what you choose to call it. If you make the shift to knowing that you are here to both learn and teach; and that your life is being orchestrated in creative collaboration with something greater, you will begin to experience the magic of life. I took a deep breath (or two!) and embraced this new adventure. I suddenly found the clarity to make the move as seamless and positive an experience as I could for me and my son. Shortly after arriving at the South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers office on a Tuesday morning, I was greeted by my predecessor, Jamie Lynn Ryan. Jamie spent the next nine days generously training me to take the baton. At Jamie’s farewell celebration just before the start of Labor Day Weekend, I was moved by the impact she has had on the rest of the staff, and on the newspapers’ readership. I have large shoes to fill, but I am excited to see what’s in store, and my hope is to be of service to you, the reader, in your pursuit of Living Well!

The South Country Central School District has filled four administrative positions with talented faculty to commence the 2018-2019 school year. Dr. Rebecca Raymond, assistant principal at Brookhaven Elementary School since 2014, has been appointed principal of the building. A Center Moriches resident, Dr. Raymond was instrumental in developing the framework for the district’s Dual Language primary program. She holds a doctoral degree in educational administration from Dowling College, as well as a bachelor’s degree in sociology and master’s degree in elementary education from Adelphi University. Replacing Dr. Raymond as Brookhaven Elementary School assistant principal is Rosa Kalomiris. Prior to her appointment, Ms. Kalomiris served as a K-12 English as a New Language teacher and as the district’s Family Engagement Coordinator. Ms. Kalomiris, a Sayville resident, holds a bachelor’s degree in linguistics/ TESOL, a master’s degree in liberal studies and educational leadership certification from Stony Brook University. She is proficient in both Portuguese and Spanish. Joseph Watson, a Blue Point resident, has been appointed assistant principal at Bellport Middle School. Prior to working in South Country, Mr. Watson served as a social studies teacher at Elmont Memorial High School in the Sewanhaka Central High School District since 2003. Mr. Watson holds a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in secondary education from

Helping Hands Club Gives Back In an effort to ensure that elementary school students have a smooth transition into the new school year, members of Connetquot High School’s Helping Hands Club recently filled 42 backpacks to the brim with essential school supplies for each elementary building. The altruistic students raised money to buy the supplies by selling bottles of water during the

Connetquot High School commencement ceremony, held this past June. Along with the 20 backpacks and supplies purchased by the club, an additional 22 backpacks were donated by Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children. The contents of the backpacks consisted of notebooks, crayons, pencils, erasers, folders and numerous other essential

classroom items. School supply donations were also collected at the Apple Bank located on Veterans Highway in Ronkonkoma, thanks to Georgette Bauch, AVP and Branch Manager. Helping Hands Club, along with co-advisers Lynn Parks and Susan Schiappa, appreciate Apple Bank and Connetquot communities’ support with this effort.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Opening of South Country Schools The iconic yellow school buses pulled up in the driveways of South Country Central School District’s elementary and secondary schools on September 5th filled with students toting backpacks and supplies for the start of the 2018-2019 school year. The students were greeted with warm smiles and well-wishes from their

teachers and principals as they filed into the buildings ready to begin instruction. Prior to opening day, the district eased the kindergarten and prekindergarten students’ transition into elementary school by hosting “playdates,” so that the schools’ youngest students could meet their teachers and make new friends. Superintendent of

Schools Dr. Joseph Giani said he was impressed by the district’s smooth opening and the teachers’ and students’ enthusiasm and motivation to begin work immediately. “I am confident that the 20182019 school year will be productive for all of our South Country students,” Dr. Giani said.

Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy,

strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. wartime service and recalled its tragic sinking on August 5, 1943. Aboard the Alva, steaming out of Kiel on March 5, 1931, William and Rosamond Vanderbilt began the ship’s inaugural voyage from Europe to Miami and then New York. The trip was preparation for their epic seven-month circumnavigation of the globe that began in July of that year. During the voyage, Mr. Vanderbilt collected marine life, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for his Centerport museum. Ten years, later, just before the United States entered World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked yacht owners to donate their boats to the U.S. Navy. Mr. Vanderbilt answered the call. On November 4, 1941, a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor, he gave the Alva to the Navy, which converted it to a patrol gunboat. The ship was renamed the USS Plymouth (PG 57). The Vanderbilt family had served in every major conflict since the War of 1812. In 1917, William Vanderbilt was commissioned as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. From May 9 to October 1, 1917, he patrolled U.S. coastal waters in his ship Tarantula II. (The following details of the Alva’s life as the USS Plymouth are from the Vanderbilt Museum archives and from Uboat. net, a history website based in Iceland with contributing writers from Germany, the United States, Canada and Europe.) On April 20, 1942, the Plymouth was commissioned and based in Norfolk, Virginia. Assigned to the Inshore Patrol Squadron in the 5th Naval District, she made several convoy escort voyages between New York, Key

West, and Guantanamo, Cuba, during 1942-43. On the evening of August 5, 1943, the Plymouth was escorting a ship convoy 120 miles southeast of Cape Henry, Virginia. The ship’s sonar gear alerted the captain and crew of underwater movement in the vicinity. Moments later, the Plymouth was spotted in the periscope of U-566, a German submarine. The sub launched a torpedo at 9:37 p.m. “The gunboat had made an underwater sound contact while escorting a coastal convoy,” the Uboat. net entry reported. “Just as the ship swung left to bear on the target, she was struck just abaft the bridge. The ship rolled first to starboard, then took a heavy list to port with the entire port side forward of amidships in flames and sank within two minutes.” Of the Plymouth’s 179 officers and men, only 84 survived. They were picked up in heavy seas by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Calypso and arrived in Norfolk on August 6. The commander, Lt. Ormsby M. Mitchel, Jr., was thrown violently against a bulkhead by the explosion. He sustained serious injuries, which later required amputation of his left leg. Despite his own condition, he directed abandon-ship operations and remained at his post until the ship went down. Mitchel was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism.
