We Will Never Forget

After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014. Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood. In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001. According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered

service, Jeff said, “Like the time I swam through the house?” This, of course, sounded like a story worth hearing and re-telling. A few years back, one of Jeff’s clients was out of town. His daughter stopped by to keep an eye on the empty house. She called Jeff in a panic saying there was a ﬂood and the water wouldn’t stop ﬂowing in. Jeff went to the house to help. He found the daughter dealing with about 6 feet of water and rising in the basement. Apparently an upstairs pipe had burst. Jeff knew the immediate answer was to shut the valve, which was clearly underwater. Dressed in a suit and tie he simply asked, “Can I borrow a pair of shorts?” He quickly changed into the shorts and did what any insurance agent would do; he started swimming. He swam across the basement,

found the valve and shut it, stopping the gushing waters. Just another day at work! While shopping for an insurance policy most of us look for the most coverage for the lowest price. I am sure we all have that ﬂeeting thought of, “What will they be like if I really have a problem?” Well, if that story doesn’t give you a small indication of their “After the sale” customer service, I don’t know what will. In preparation for the 2019-20 academic school year, the Connetquot Central School District recently hosted a comprehensive, three-day new teacher orientation for its newly hired staff members. Under the guidance of a multitude of staff members and administrators, the teachers received

detailed information about the school district and participated in collaborative planning sessions after engaging in a series of icebreaker activities. Working as a group, they discussed a variety of pedagogical strategies and developed the framework for engaging lesson plans which will be utilized throughout the upcoming

school year. The workshops also provided them with the opportunity to become well-versed in the schools’ technological resources and learn more about the district’s policies and procedures. The district congratulates Cristina Balducci, Julia DeMaio, Michael Doescher, Amanda Greengrass,

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today invited residents who use tobacco and are seeking assistance in breaking their addiction to sign up for free smoking cessation classes. The Learn to Be…Tobacco Free program offers assistance with planning, support, counseling and provides over-the counter medications to participants who are medically eligible. “Breaking an addiction to tobacco is never easy but with the right support network it can literally save one’s life,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Since the inception of

this program, thousands of smokers have participated in the program and increased their chances of succeeding in this task. I encourage anyone who is struggling to quit, to sign up for these informative classes and get healthier.” Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Health Services, said: “We know more than ever about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to tobacco cessation.
